HBO has greenlit the limited series “Dtf St. Louis” with Jason Bateman and David Harbour set for two of the lead roles, Variety has learned.
HBO has given the series a seven-episode order. The show was originally announced as being in development back in 2022 with Harbour and Pedro Pascal attached to star and executive produce. The project was originally inspired by the James Lasdun New Yorker article “My Dentist’s Murder Trial: Adultery, False Identities, and a Lethal Sedation.”
However, according to an individual with knowledge of the project, the creative direction of the series evolved over time and is now based on a wholly original idea with no connection to the original article. In addition, Pascal is no longer attached in any capacity. He remains in business with HBO, though, with the second season of “The Last of Us” set to debut in 2025.

Tom Waits is set to reunite with Iggy Pop next month when they co-host a two-hour special on BBC Radio 6 Music.
Airing on Sunday, December 3rd, the show will see the two musicians trading personal anecdotes and playing some of their favorite tracks to each other.
A press release teased some of those stories, including the time when Waits hitched a ride to Los Angeles with songwriter eden ahbez, who composed Nat King Cole’s 1948 hit “Nature Boy.”
Meanwhile, Iggy Pop will recall how he once stumbled across Captain Beefheart eating breakfast in LA, but was “wise enough not to disturb him.”
Some of the songs that will be played during the special include Alex Chiltern’s “Bangkok,” Pauline Oliveros’ “Bye Bye Butterfly,” Frank Ocean’s “Moon River,” and Johnny Paycheck’s “Colorado Kool-Aid,” along with the first spoken word song that Waits heard on the radio and a...

Word on the cobblestone street is that Tom Waits is writing again, according to his longtime Irish music agent Paul Charles.
The news comes by way of Charles’ new memoir — though mentioned in the Irish Examiner — in which he reflects on his time spent working with Waits, as well as Van Morrison, and Richard Branson. In particular, Charles shared the news while reminiscing on the last performance Waits did in 2008 in Dublin, in a tent venue called the Rat Cellar.
“We all hope he will tour again. After he did the three nights in the Rat Cellar, he went home,” Charles writes. “He enjoyed the tour a lot, and the idea was to start writing. He did a bit of recording, and then he basically got distracted by the movie world for a while. The news is that he’s started writing again. We’ve all got our fingers crossed for another return visit.

1. “Ozark” Season 4, Part 1 (available January 21)
Why Should I Watch? The beginning of the end starts with a premiere episode titled… “The Beginning of the End.” Jason Bateman’s breakthrough dramatic turn — as Marty Byrde, an accountant-turned-money-launderer who flees to the middle of Missouri with his family to make big profits for his cartel lord clients — will come to a close in 2022 via a supersized final season. Part 1 premieres January 21 with eight episodes, before the last eight entries debut at a later date. By now, you know if you’re onboard with the dark crime saga, and if you don’t, knowing the end is right around the corner should be reason enough to get going. Just take your time. Unlike the Byrdes, who were last seen in the bloody embrace of their unpredictable boss, you’ve got a bit of breathing room.
Bonus Reason: Laura Linney. Everyone who’s seen...

The “Game of Thrones” prequel series “Tales of Dunk and Egg” at HBO has found its writer, Variety has learned from sources.
Steve Conrad has been tapped to serve as writer and executive producer on the potential series under his Elephant Pictures banner. As Variety exclusively reported in January 2021, the one-hour show would be based on the series of fantasy novellas by George R. R. Martin, which follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg) 90 years prior to the events of “A Song of Ice and Fire.”
Reps for HBO and Conrad declined to comment.
Conrad previously created the Amazon series “Patriot” as well as the current AMC stop-motion animation series “Ultra City Smiths.” He also co-created the Epix neo-noir series “Perpetual Grace Ltd” starring Sir Ben Kingsley and Jimmi SImpson. Once again, we find ourselves already surprisingly further into a calendar year than feels appropriate. Even for those who don’t make it their sole mission to stay up-to-date with every new development in the TV world, the majority of the past year has brought with it a daunting number of series.
Some of those have been brand new shows, either the result of conscious release date delays or interrupted production schedules. Others have been series imports that enjoyed full runs in different parts of the world before getting a U.S. debut in 2021. And as the year continues to develop and the awards calendar switches over into its multi-holiday phase, we’ve also seen the return of established favorites.
We try our best to help sift through the steady stream of newcomers every month, but there still always seems to be more than any casual viewer can keep track.

“Star Trek: Prodigy,” the latest addition to the expanding universe of “Trek” series on Paramount Plus, is adding sci-fi heavyweights John Noble (“Fringe”) and Jimmi Simpson (“Westworld”) to its series regular cast, the streamer announced on Thursday.
Noble will voice the animated series’ lead villain, known as the Diviner, who rules the mining asteroid of Tars Lamora in a merciless quest to locate the U.S.S. Protostar, the mysteriously abandoned experimental Federation starship at the center of the show. Instead, a motley crew of six young aliens finds the ship, and learns from the emergency training hologram, Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), how to operate it and what the Federation stands for.
One of the Protostar’s fledgling crew happens to be the Diviner’s child, Gwyn (Ella Purnell), which no doubt complicates matters for her new compatriots, especially since the Diviner sees Gwyn as the heir to his legacy.

Chicago – When we last checked in with actor and filmmaker Ashton Swinford, she had just completed her hilarious web series ”Miss Information”. She is back with a new short film, equally funny, in the white privilege satire “Basic Witches.”

When a fellow traveler (Vik Pandya) points out that their “magic” is a result of their social status, an incident is sure to follow. Shot in the pre-pandemic world, Ashton Swinford hesitated releasing it, realizing that the world had changed a bit, but the message remains clear.

As if made to prove that film noir isn’t one genre, but all the genres, Steve Conrad’s “Ultra City Smiths” tackles its many creative departures with captivating verve, gliding from crime saga to sporadic musical to stop-motion animated whodunit, all while imbuing each with a spirit so bleak it makes the new series’ dreamy dancing between absurd comedy and moving drama absolutely stunning.
And yes, there is dancing — oh, is there ever.
While describing the AMC+ series’ plot may prove as futile as launching a standalone streaming service for a network whose biggest hits are available elsewhere, I, too, will give it a go. “Ultra City Smiths” is set in Ultra City, a Manhattan stand-in filled with sports arenas like Addison Square Garden, newspapers like “The Ultra City Times” spelled out in a familiar Old English font, and prison ferries shipping in from Rucker’s Island. Four very different musical artists have been chosen to judge Fox’s first-ever avatar singing competition series Alter Ego: Grammy Award winner Alanis Morissette, singer/television personality Nick Lachey, Canadian singer-songwriter Grimes and Grammy Award-winning rapper will.i.am. Additionally, Rocsi Diaz (106 & Park, Dating Naked) has been tapped to host the show.
Rather than performing as themselves, Alter Ego contestants will create their dream avatar to showcase how they’ve always wanted to be seen, while presenting their unique performance style via motion capture technology.

In the wake of the pandemic, shows have gotten inventive, many eschewing actors entirely in favor of finding unique ways to tell stories with animated methods. Case in point: the upcoming AMC+ series “Ultra City Smiths,” which released its first trailer below and looks to be a fun / bizarre, murder-mystery told with stop-motion animation and baby dolls.
The plot synopsis per AMC:
From AMC Studios and created by Steve Conrad and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios “Ultra City Smiths” unfolds via the stop-motion animation of baby dolls repurposed as a grown-up cast of characters. The series hinges on an investigation into the mysterious disappearance of fictional metropolis Ultra City’s most famous magnate (Smith).
Two intrepid detectives (Jimmi Simpson and Da’Vine Joy Randolph) follow the case, rallying to fight against their city’s dangerous corruption, at a high cost to themselves and their families, all in pursuit of a gentler place to call home.
