Un Messenger of Peace Jane Goodall recently spoke in front of 60,000 people at the Global Citizen Festival in NYC.
“Chimpanzees help prove there is no sharp line that separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom,” she said. "And yet knowing that they have emotions like ours, we still show cruelty toward animals and each other. With our clever brains, how is it that we humans are destroying the environment?
“We’re burning fossil fuels, creating the greenhouse gases that cause extremes of temperature, more frequent and more destructive storms. Why do we pursue the wealth at the expense of future generations?
“I have hope because of our clever brains, the resilience of nature, the indomitable human spirit and above all the commitment of young people when they’re empowered to take action.”

Yield Entertainment has released a new poster and stills for Jeremy Benson’s Girl in Woods. The latest thriller from the director of Shutter and Live Animals, the titular girl must battle nature and her own demons for her survival and sanity in a deserted part of the Appalachian Mountains. On his latest film, Benson said:
Girl in Woods was a passion project for us. The idea of doing an origin story to what would be a slasher film interested me, and being able to wrap that inside of a psychological thriller seemed to add a level of storytelling that, as a horror fan, I felt would be welcomed. This film is the birth of an urban legend; one of a mysterious savage that is believed to be killing people in the mountains. I want audiences to be disturbed by what is happening to Grace, and at the end understand...

Remember when animal wranglers involved with “The Hobbit” movies revealed that Peter Jackson’s production resulted in the death of 27 animals? That did not sit well with the zoological protection organizations! If the Humane Society ran its own version of The Razzies, 2012’s “Unexpected Journey” would have picked up the award. Lucky for Team Hobbit, it doesn’t. In fact, after several recent cases of animal mistreatment (the death of three horses on the set of HBO’s “Lucky” comes to mind) the Humane Society turn the other cheek in 2014 and praise the people of Hollywood who are getting it right. The Wrap reports that Darren Aronofsky will be the first recipient of the the organization’s Filmmaker Award, for the “compassionate decision” to use CG animals in his March tentpole “Noah.” Aronofsky will earn his award at the Humane Society’s “To The Rescue! New York,” set for Nov.

Regardless of how you feel about horror anthology films, it’s obvious that they aren’t going anywhere. And why would they? The format allows for nascent filmmakers to flex their chops on a short segment before feeling the pressure of a full feature; and given that the short story is the most prominent and effective form of horror (just look at the masters: Poe, Lovecraft, Matheson), it also provides the opportunity to experience these tales visually without stretching them thin to reach standard film length. It’s like reading a literary magazine from cover to cover: different styles, different effects, different scares. I’m all for it.
Our friends over at Reel Progress are working straight from literary short stories for their new anthology film Creepers. Check out the full press release.

Word about Girl in Woods, a new film from writer/director Jeremy Benson (Live Animals), landed in our inbox this week, and here to help you get through Hump Day are the first details and some early teaser art.
Benson's film, which is produced by Mark Williams, stars Juliet Reeves, Lee Perkins, Charisma Carpenter, Jeremy London, and the late John Still.
Perkins broke things down a bit for us cast-wise: "The lead (Grace) is played by Juliet. Charisma and I play the mom and dad to Grace when she was young, and John Still (who just passed away) plays the granddad. Jeremy London plays the grown-up Grace's boyfriend."
Check out the goods, including a bloody Charisma Carpenter in the bathtub, below; and while we wait for more, be sure to "like" Girl in Woods on Facebook.

This week we return to our budding designers fresh off their first elimination and more inspired than ever. For the most part.
"I wouldn't say I am trying to win this challenge as much as I am trying to just get by," says Joshua C., who just barely escaped elimination last week.
Way to reach for the stars, kid.
This week's challenge: "Unconventional." Designers must get all their supplies from a pet store. They have $300 to spend. Live animals are off limits, which is too bad because bunny clutches are so in! Right? Right.
Oh, the drama: Bert! You're killing us, man! Having won immunity last week, Bert has no interest in living up to his potential in this week's challenge.
"Thank god I have immunity for this challenge, because I don't get into that costume-y thing. It's not my strength." he says, then corrects himself: "Or not not my strength,...
