After a very intense and controversial Oscars season, Netflix scooped up three awards at the 2025 97th Academy Awards. That brings Netflix’s total Oscar count up to 26 statues. Here’s a full breakdown of Netflix’s past efforts at the Academy Awards and the full list of 73 nominated titles.

Netflix takes the Oscars seriously. They continue to have a massive team working on awards campaigning. Insider reported in 2022 that Netflix had a 40-person awards operation along with 15 consultants who spread their time working on campaigns for Emmys and, of course, the Oscars. Despite that massive spending and resource allocation, it’s still yet to win some of the biggest prizes of the night when some of its close rivals have. Apple TV+ notably scored Best Picture at the 2022 Oscars, and Prime Video has scooped some top awards, too.

Hollywood studios tried to put Covid-19 in the rear-view mirror in 2022, but cinemas in China were shut for part of the year, there were periods with little new product for screens, the global box office rose 28.4 percent to $25.7 billion (below pre-pandemic levels), and ramped up spending on productions and marketing of expanded slates affected some bottom lines. In some cases, a particularly profitable 2021 also made for particularly difficult earnings comparisons last year. Maybe you’ve been patiently waiting two years for director Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” sequel. Upwards of 85 new films will launch (or have already arrived) on Netflix this year. A few movies made their grand debuts in January, and quite a few more are set to launch at the beginning of this month, but the streaming service is touting its 2022 slate with new movies every week and a robust lineup of actors and filmmakers.

Standout tiles include Shawn Levy’s time-traveling tale, “The Adam Project,” with a cast led by Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner and Zoe Saldaña, as well as a new adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Persuasion,” starring Dakota Johnson and Henry Golding. Regina King will embody trailblazing politician Shirley Chisholm in a biopic titled “Shirley.” Stop-motion and horror maestros Henry Selick and Jordan Peele are teaming up for the animated pic “Wendell & Wild.” “The Gray Man” stars both Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in a CIA/spy/global manhunt film alongside Ana de Armas.

Netflix is adapting a classic series of books into movies and TV shows. The streaming service has landed the rights to Brian Jacques' Redwall book series. They will be reimagined on screen following a rights deal between Penguin Random House Children's UK and Netflix. This marks the first time that the rights to the entire series of books have been held by one company.

Brian Jacques’ beloved “Redwall” books are being adapted into a feature film and TV series thanks to a new rights deal between Netflix and Penguin Random House Children. The fantasy novels have sold 30 million copies globally and have attracted an avid following with their tales of heroism, villainy and derring do all played out by mice, moles, hares and badgers. Think J.R.R. Tolkien with cuddlier protagonists.

Netflix announced it has enlisted Patrick McHale, creator of Cartoon Network’s “Over the Garden Wall,” to write the feature film. That film will be based on Jacques’ first book in the series, “Redwall”. Netflix is also developing an event series based on the character of Martin the Warrior.

The deal marks the first time that the film rights to the entire book series have been held by the same company and the first time a feature film of any of Jacques’ works will be made.

Set in a world of witches and shapeshifters, Molly Knox Ostertag's graphic novel series The Witch Boy is being adapted by Netflix as an animated musical with Minkyu Lee (Adam and Dog) as the director and the band Haim onboard to write music for the movie.

Theatrical distribution took another hit, as streamer Netflix acquired “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” (formerly “Connected”) from Sony Pictures Animation. The sci-fi comedy from Oscar-winning producers Phil Lord & Chris Miller (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”) was originally scheduled for release last October 23 but postponed because of the pandemic. It will now stream globally later this year (except in China) under its original title (scripted by director Mike Rianda of “Gravity Falls” fame and co-director Jeff Rowe), and will not compete in this year’s awards season.

Netflix has unveiled the animated feature film “The Magician’s Elephant,” with a voice cast including Noah Jupe, Pixie Davies, Sian Clifford, Natasia Demetriou, Dawn French, Brian Tyree Henry and Benedict Wong.

“The Magician’s Elephant” is based on Newbery Award winner Kate Dicamillo’s novel of the same title. The film, currently in production, marks the directorial debut of visual effects veteran Wendy Rogers — whose credits include “Shrek,” “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” and “Puss in Boots” — and is produced by Julia Pistor.

The voice cast also includes Aasif Mandvi, Mandy Patinkin, Miranda Richardson, Cree Summer and Lorraine Toussaint.

“Toy Story 4” writer Martin Hynes has written the script. Animal Logic is handling the computer imagery for “The Magician’s Elephant.”

I was the child actor in a travelling experimental theatre company, La MaMa. We were the American entry in these summer theatre festivals across Europe and beyond: Italy, Germany, France, Scotland, Finland, Greece, Lebanon, Iran, we did them all. We also did some red countries. I remember thinking: “What is a red country?” I didn’t understand. We went to see A Clockwork Orange in Copenhagen. It was nice to find a theatre where the films hadn’t been dubbed, and it was a hot ticket, so that was probably the criteria. I don’t think that the twentysomething cinema usher realised what Kubrick had in for us when she allowed nine-year-old me in to see it.

We’ve known and been reporting for a while now about the premiere of Haven and some of the other shows, but this brings it all together, along with a head’s up about a couple of the new series and movie premieres. No titles are as excellent as Sharknado, but one of them features “sea vampires”! Who knew?

There are movie marathons. Syfy is busting out its greatest hits in the giant monster oeuvre on Friday, followed by "Star Trek" movies all weekend. TCM and AMC are showing nothing but military movies, including classics like "All Quiet on the Western Front," "From Here to Eternity" and "Patton."

If marathons are your thing, you've got everything from "Firefly" and "Doctor Who" to "House Hunters" and "How It's Made." And if you're a sports fan, while the NBA playoffs are on hiatus, you can still watch a ton of baseball, the 2011 French Open or the annual Memorial Day race the Indianapolis 500.

Syfy rocks when it premieres its Original Movie Stonehenge Apocalypse next month. The science-fiction thriller in which the ancient monoliths trigger horrific disasters all over the world was directed by Syfy stalwart Paul Ziller (Snakehead Terror, Sea Beast, Yeti) and written by Ziller and Brad Abraham, the latter of whom spoke to Fango about the project and the Syfy development process.

We now have a new favorite title for a Syfy original movie: Mongolian Death Worms! But bear in mind that they didn’t make up that moniker; it seems the Mongolian Death Worm is a cryptozoological species that has been reported and investigated for decades now, which makes it a surprise that Syfy didn’t catch up with it sooner.

The Worm supposedly ranges from 2 to 5 feet long and lives under the sands of the Gobi desert, from which it emerges to kill its prey via either spitting caustic acid or launching electrical shocks. As for its movie incarnation, Mongolian Death Worms recently lensed in Dallas, TX for Ogre and Wyvern director Steven R. Monroe, who scripted with Sea Beast’s Neil Elman. Veteran actor-turned-filmmaker Andrew Stevens produced, with Masters Of Horror: The Damned Thing’s Sean Patrick Flanery, House Of The Dead 2’s Victoria Pratt, George Cheung...

June is going to be a busy month for DVD releases. We're going to get supernatural horrors, Italian shockers, and Sci-Fi Channel schlockers; not to mention one hell of an Asylum mocker. Here's a taste of things to come.

What better place to begin than with Lionsgate's June 16th release of Richard Friedman's Born. Starring Joan Severence, Denise Crosby, and Kane Hodder, it's another one of those demon baby in the womb horror flicks. This time out a virginal 21-year old (Alison Brie) wakes up impregnated by a demon (Hodder, of course); the demonic baby eventually overtakes her mind and sends her on a killing spree. I've come across some reviews of Born online, and let's just say most would have preferred this film to be retitled Abort. Only the best from Lionsgate.

• Crispin Glover fans have no doubt been wondering what happened to Simon Says, the indie slasher opus starring the eccentric actor as homicidal twins, which was made nearly three years ago and has only made a few festival appearances in North America since. Well, the wait is finally over.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release the William Dear-written/directed flick on DVD June 23. The cast also includes From Within’s Margo Harshman and Kelly Blatz, Greg Cipes, Carrie Finklea, Kelly Vitz, Artie Baxter, veteran actor Bruce Glover and Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively along with her siblings Lori and Robyn and their father Ernie, and the disc will contain a widescreen transfer with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, a filmmaker audio commentary and possibly other extras.
