Why ABC Cancelled A Found Footage Horror Series From The Director Of Paranormal Activity
Image
You can't undersell the impact "Paranormal Activity" had on the found footage movie boom. While there were plenty of predecessors that made the horror subgenre feel downright revolutionary like "The Blair Witch Project" and "Cloverfield," Oren Peli's self-contained haunted house flick kicked the doors down when it came to studio interest. It delivered suspenseful thrills and chills on a micro-budget that allowed it to make an unbelievable profit for Paramount. Everyone tried to recapture the magic with varying levels of success.

Peli would spend the following years producing the "Paranormal Activity" and "Insidious" franchises, while conjuring an original idea for television with "Paranormal Activity 2" co-writer Michael R. Perry. The result was 2012's "The River," a found footage adventure-horror series that only ran for one season on ABC.

There had been some examples of found footage finding success on the small screen such as Animal Planet's "Lost Tapes,...

Regular Show’s Best Episodes Already Proved That The Upcoming Reboot Will Work
Image
Regular Show is returning with a new series, and the show’s best episodes already proved that Mordecai and Rigby can be revisited despite how great season 8’s ending was. Given Regular Show’s perfect series finale, it might be difficult to accept that a new project is happening. However, not only is Regular Show one of Cartoon Network’s most important IPs, but the series is also packed with great characters that could be revisited in some way.

It's unclear what this new Regular Show will be, although Mark Hamill indicated he will return as Skips. Variety, who broke the news about Regular Show’s reboot, mentioned that this new series was likely going to include old and new characters. It has since been heavily rumored that the new series will be called Regular Show: The Lost Case, suggesting that it could be made of standalone stories set at...

Regular Show Returning Over 7 Years Later Makes One Joke From The Finale Even Better
Image
A new Regular Show is officially happening, and the fact that the beloved cartoon will return in some form over seven years after its final season makes the meta jokes from the finale even better. Regular Show was one of the wildest, most creative series on Cartoon Network for eight years. From the larger-than-life characters to the bizarre plots, Regular Show didnt fit into a specific genre and always delivered something unique every week. This includes the Regular Show series finale, which was as clever and self-aware as one would expect.

Regular Show season 8, episode 27, A Regular Epic Final Battle was a three-part episode that wrapped up the show with an epic battle for the fate of the universe and an emotional look into the future of the park crew. Given that we watched Mordecai, Rigby, and the others age and build families, it seemed like there was no room for Regular Show to return.

Rumored Title Revealed for Regular Show Sequel Series
Image
Regular Show ran for eight bizarre seasons, and a potential leak has sparked rumors about the title of the upcoming follow-up series. Regular Show's final season aired in 2017, tightly wrapping up Mordecai and Rigbys story, but the sequel in the works will bring the slackers back for what will almost certainly be even more bizarre hijinks.

Per Comicbook.com, a recent job description for Warner Bros Animation may have just revealed the new series title. A listing for an intern position called the new project Regular Show Lost Tapes. The listing is still available and can viewed.

Regular Show has proven its worth by running over eight seasons and has received its own movie. Out of all its episodes, a few stand out as the best.

Natasha Richardson, Emma Roberts, Juno Temple, Ruby Thomas, Georgia King, and Kimberley Nixon in Wild Child (2008)
Los Angeles, Feb. 16, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Valerie Carter, the late Southern California vocalist, is reimagined in a stunning new remake of The Faragher Brothers 1976 classic hit, “Never Get Your Love Behind Me,” on Faraphonic Records in conjunction with Cowboy Angel Records. In this exciting collaboration, the Valerie Carter Estate and Faragher Brothers have joined forces to bring a retro soul single to life. This special release is recorded with a special twist—the inclusion of Valerie Carter’s original vocals from 1977 intended for her Columbia Records album, “Wild Child.”

Following up on the recent “Lost Tapes” releases by Valerie Carter in 2018 (Vol 1) and 2022 (Vol 2), once again Val’s close friend, music producer Kathy Kurasch, and sister Jan Carter, have rediscovered unreleased material. Kathy notes: “I found another old cassette of Val’s from the “Wild Child” album demos, and there was an added song not included on the album of The Faragher...

From King Charles to Malcolm X, Documentary Filmmaker Tom Jennings Hunts for Big Names, Fresh Footage in Battle With Drama Shows
Image
Leading the news and documentary jury at this year’s Monte-Carlo Television Festival, Peabody and Emmy-winning filmmaker Tom Jennings has seen the non-fiction business trend toward premium offerings with more event series – an evolution shared across much of the larger television landscape and pushed, in no small part, by streamers.

“Ten to 15 years ago, we were a ratings driven business,” he tells Variety. “Now, it’s a question of getting people to sign up and stick around because what they like is on a given platform.”

For companies likes Jennings’ 1895 Films the shifting terrain has resulted in shorter episode order with greater budgets as docs and dramas find themselves showcased alongside one another with little divide.

“The call for always having something unique is probably more intense now,” says Jennings. “We have to operate at a very high level in terms quality, because we’re competing with all the blue...

‘The River’ – Rediscovering the ‘Paranormal Activity’ Director’s Found Footage TV Series
Image
In the finale of the 2012 television series The River, a character says what everyone else is thinking: “It’s never gonna let us go.” This foreboding last line is, of course, in reference to the show’s sinuous and uncanny namesake. From there the audience is left to wonder what happened to the crew of the Magus as they drifted toward imminent danger.

This wasn’t the first time a TV show visited the Amazon; a short-lived 1999 drama created by author Peter Benchley beat Oren Peli and Michael R. Perry’s series to the punch. However, The River was a mix of adventure and horror. In place of a plane crashing and the survivors struggling to survive their dilemma are characters who deliberately enter the unknown. After a famous explorer named Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood) goes missing somewhere off the Amazon River, while searching for “real magic,” his wife and...

In Computero: Hear How AI Software Wrote a ‘New’ Nirvana Song
Image
Ever since Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994, Nirvana fans have hypothesized about the music he would have made had he lived. But other than “You Know You’re Right,” the scabrous, throat-shredding meditation on confusion that Nirvana recorded a few months before his suicide, and a few comments he told confidants about potentially collaborating with R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe or going completely solo, he mainly left behind question marks.

Now an organization has created a “new” Nirvana song using artificial-intelligence software to approximate the singer-guitarist’s songwriting. The guitar riffs vary from quiet,...

“With archival photos and videos as well as compelling interviews with musicians who lived in the golden age of reggae, the...

The compilation arrives July 19th, 17 years after the highly acclaimed first installment, which collected unreleased tracks from Nas’ 1999 album I Am… and 2001’s Stillmatic. While the follow-up was expected soon after, the project was repeatedly delayed and as Nas explained, “I really didn’t know what to do these songs because they weren’t really the songs that I wanted to put on a record. Patty Hearst Turns from Heiress to Revolutionary and Then Back in New Archival Documentary
Natasha Richardson in Patty Hearst (1988)
Newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst Shaw occasionally creeps into the headlines these days as a champion show dog trainer, a figure of enduring curiosity with a past string of minor roles as an actress on TV and in the kitschy films of director John Waters.

But for a heightened moment in the mid-1970s, Patty Hearst, as she was then known, was the central figure in a San Francisco Bay area kidnapping and crime spree that intersected with domestic terrorism during a chaotic moment in American politics and culture, producing iconic images of the era and landing her in prison for 22 months after she embraced,...

Rodney King
There’s no question that Rodney King was brutally beaten by Los Angeles Police Department officers – video taken of the savage act proves it. Does This Submarine Footage Show a Mermaid-Like Humanoid Creature?
Last year, Animal Planet aired a pair of very bizarre specials devoted to the apparent discovery of the mythical sea creatures we know as mermaids... or something very much like them. Photo: Animal Planet The first program, Mermaids: The Body Found, included the following clip from a manned submersible vessel near the coast of Greenland, whose two-man crew is shocked to spot a fast-moving humanoid with webbed hands brushing past their ship: The strangest part of this story isn't the clip itself, but the fact that the show-runners never let on until the end credits that the video is really a CG-enhanced dramatization and the “scientists” are paid actors – so we're basically watching a short found-footage horror film masquerading as a documentary. It's not the first time the network has depicted bogus monsters (popular series like Lost Tapes and Freak Encounters involve dramatizations of monster sightings and urban legends), but...

Meet the World's Largest and Most Venomous Centipede
Roger Corman
The South American rainforest is home to a wide variety of dangerous species, and this many-legged monstrosity is one of the meanest and most dangerous. The Peruvian giant centipede, who goes by the awesome scientific name Scolopendra gigantea, is the largest creature of its kind ever found. While most garden-variety centipedes are only a few inches long, this dude can grow up to two and a half feet. Scolopendra gigantea is also extremely venomous: his front claws are lightning-fast and powerful, and loaded with a neurotoxin that kills just about any small or medium-sized animal... including bats, which he can pluck straight out of the air by hanging from the roof of bat-populated caves. While the venom is usually non-lethal to adult humans, its bite is one of the most painful ever reported – basically the equivalent of being stung by a two-foot-long wasp. Even larger centipede species could potentially exist in the rainforest regions,...

‘Insidious Chapter 2’ Producer Talks Micro-Budget Horror & ‘Amityville: Lost Tapes’
Even though Insidious opened to the tune of $13.3 million back in April of 2011 on a mere $1.5 million production budget, producer Jason Blum didn’t consider the film a hit until it defied the odds and evaded the familiar horror genre weekend #2 box office crash. Even more impressive: after dipping just 29.4% making the move through weekend two, Insidious continued to play exceptionally well – so well in fact that the film spent 23 weekends in theaters and wrapped its worldwide theatrical run with nearly $100 million in the bank. Clearly that success warranted sequel talk.

Insidious came out in April 2011, but the Insidious Chapter 2 treatment ...

Cryptid Catalog: 'The Dover Demon'
Around this time in 1977, in the small Massachusetts town of Dover, a mysterious creature was reportedly sighted by a group of teenagers. It was described by one of those witnesses, William Bartlett, as being about four feet tall, with glowing orange eyes in an oval-shaped head with no discernible nose or mouth. Their reports of this creature, later nicknamed “The Dover Demon” by noted cryptozoologist Loren Coleman, spawned a local legend that now fascinates monster buffs around the world. Bartlett was seventeen years old when he saw the creature perched on a broken stone wall near the road. According to separate reports, later that evening and the following night two additional witnesses allegedly sighted the demon. One of them drew a picture of it, depicting the creature as a hairless large-eyed humanoid that looks a bit like the classic description of alien visitors: Bartlett, now an artist, told the Boston...

Cryptid Catalog: South Carolina's 'Lizard Man'
Today's featured cryptid is a reptilian twist on rural monster lore: where the Sasquatch and Yeti legends (and their many regional offshoots) involve sightings of an ape-like humanoid lurking in the wilderness, suggesting a possible ancestor to modern primates or even a close relative of humans, the “Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp” is also described as man-sized and walking upright, but with unique features resembling those of an alligator. First reported in the late '80s, the creature has been allegedly sighted numerous times, and has now become a figure of pop culture among many of the residents of Lee County, South Carolina. Beginning with multiple sightings in the summer of 1988, the most consistent description of the Lizard Man is his incredible strength and aggressiveness; many accounts describe him attacking cars in the area around Scape Ore Swamp, sometimes inflicting severe damage to the vehicles with his teeth and claws.

Netflix Instant - Animal Planet's "Lost Tapes" (Like or Dislike)
The found footage horror genre is moving far past films. Basic cable wildlife staple, Animal Planet, has joined the fray with their horror mockumentary series Lost Tapes, a series dealing almost exclusively with displaced animals and cryptids, presented in the style of lost films recovered (usually) long after the demise of their subjects. For the uninitiated, a cryptid is a creature whose existence is considered by most in the scientific comm…...

Blu-ray Review: Surprisingly Effective ‘Paranormal Activity 3’ Finds Scares Again
Chicago – It is incredibly rare for a third installment in a franchise to find what was lost in the second one. That usually takes much longer, if it ever comes. “Saw III,” “Friday the 13th, Part III,” “Halloween III” — none of these movies come close to the original. Which is why it’s so remarkable to report that “Paranormal Activity 3” comes surprisingly close to the quality of the first film, arguably surpassing it.

Blu-ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

Where “Paranormal Activity 2” was a lot like watching the same rabbit come out of the same hat, the follow-up is a refreshing remix of the strengths of the first film. Instead of the sometimes-cluttered scares of the second movie, the directors smartly return to slow burn horror, allowing the scares to build slowly to a stunning ending. There are some true, honest scares in “Paranormal Activity 3,” including a great bathroom scene, an...

Review: Paranormal Activity 3 (Blu-ray)
Very few horror franchises are able to continue a storyline and expand the series mythology in a way that feels natural. Look at the Saw franchise as an example of mythology getting out of control as the series continues. Not only does Paranormal Activity 3 do a great job of expanding the mythology of the first two films in a way that makes the story more interesting, it also works as a solid standalone effort.

Paranormal Activity 3 takes us back to 1988, when series characters Katie and Kristi are young girls. Kristi has an invisible friend named Toby and the family becomes convinced Toby is real after strange events start to occur in the house. Their mother’s boyfriend, Dennis, is a wedding videographer and sets up cameras around the house to capture Toby on tape.

Paranormal Activity movies play out like the first half of a horror film. Everyone...

'Paranormal Activity 3'

Box Office: $104 million

Rotten Tomatoes: 66% Fresh

Storyline: This "Paranormal Activity" prequel features found VHS footage of Katie and Kristi Featherton when they were little girls in 1988. Extras! The "Lost Tapes" on the DVD and Blu-ray feature some more footage of the mother's boyfriend (Christopher Nicolas Smith) trying to scare her (Lauren Bittner), but any footage of the sex tape the two tried to make at the beginning of the movie remains regrettably "lost.

Paranormal Activity 3 takes audiences back to where it all began with the masterminds behind the first two films returning to craft a hauntingly chilling follow up. No Blood and Boobs This Thanksgiving: Piranha 3Dd is Pulled, And Why That’s a Bad Thing
You know, it was difficult writing a headline for this article and not veering into some tasteless, inappropriate pun. After all, breasts and thighs are part of everyone’s Thanksgiving feast and they played a big role in last year’s Piranha 3D. So, unless it was changed by the powers that be, consider my headline an attempt at discretion.

But it’s hard not to talk about the two B’s when discussing Piranha 3Dd. After all, Alexandra Aja’s reboot of the Corman classic featured lots of blood, including a stunning 20-minute attack by the killer fish on a bunch of spring breakers that had to push the limits of the MPAA’s tolerance, especially when Aja added into the mix several prolonged scenes of naked women.

While female viewers didn’t get a lot to appreciate in the way of male nudity, you can’t say Aja...

‘Piranha 3Dd’ & ‘Amityville Horror: Lost Tapes’ Release Dates Delayed
We know what you horror movie fans out there have been clamoring for: sequels to Piranha 3D and The Amityville Horror! (Sarcasm alert!) Sure, both franchises have already spawned sequels – but those sequels were for the old, dusty versions of these horror not-so-classics – we need sequels to the newer-but-not-better remakes!

Well, sorry to start your week off with bad news, horror fans, but it seems as though both Piranha 3Dd and The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes have been bumped from their respective release dates, and are now facing an uncertain future.

Piranha 3Dd has been through several release date changes: the sequel was originally slated as a summer 2011 release, but then got bumped to November 23rd of this year (to ...

Trailer Exposes Underground Lizard People to the World
Move over, Cannabalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. Here come the Underground Lizard People. Ulp? Doesn't quite have the same ring to it as Chud.

Director Jared Cohn co-wrote the screenplay with Ed Erdalac for this allegedly true story of five young documentary filmmakers that venture into the Banning tunnels of downtown Los Angeles to investigate the urban legend of cannabilistic lizard people and suffer the grave misfortune of finding precisely what they went looking for. Caitlin Gold, Clint Byrne, Colin Walker, Lauren Klemp, Hugo Dillon and Courtney Hammond star.

The ever vigilant Avery Guerra brings word of the film and its trailer. From what I'm seeing, Underground Lizard People looks like a feature-length episode of Animal Planet's "Lost Tapes". Probably a bigger budget than the average "Lost Tapes" episode, too.

Nas Reveals He Considered Giving Up Solo Projects
Mc tells MTV News he got deep into Distant Relatives collabo, 'but it's that time' for a Nas album.

He went from Nasty Nas to Nas Escobar, blossoming into a mature voice that could collaborate with the likes of dancehall star Damian Marley for a full-length album. But As Nas' street-edged material has continued to leak online, the question is which Nas will show up on his next effort, due later this year: Nasty or an entirely new persona?

Neither, according to the Queensbridge Mc.

"Sometimes, you can approach a record and can think, I got to take care of this person and I got to take care of that person, but you really got to take care of you," Nas recently told MTV News.

"I look at Michael Jackson, and before he passed away, I can only...

Nas' anticipated The Lost Tapes: Vol. 2 could be fans' gain and current label Def Jam's loss.

The rapper revealed that he intends to release the project as part of a special-edition version of his next album, due out later this year.

"Because I kind of lost time, I really wanted to release [the album] in December," Nas told MTV News just before the holidays. "But I'm starting my next album. So I feel like I'll probably give The Lost Tapes as a deluxe, maybe, on the next album for free. I'm trying to figure that out now."

In October, Nas allegedly blasted his recording home after the company reportedly bungled the release of The Lost Tapes project,...

Pajiba After Dark 10/19/10
Yesterday I was so caught up in my lack of sleep and recovering from my awesome weekend that I somehow managed to completely overlook the fact that it was my first anniversary of writing Pajiba After Dark. I'm not sure how special of an occasion this is, but I'll accept any offers of gifts, monetary compensation, or promises of liquor that you feel moved to offer. I'd like to think I've gotten better at this gig since I started it and while I'm sure there are plenty of you who will dispute that I don't care. I'm going to go celebrate (read: go to trivia night and enjoy two for one well drinks like I would any other Tuesday) and here's your Tuesday night TV:

8:00pm: "30 For 30" on Espn

"The Biggest Loser" on NBC

"Melissa and Joey" on ABC Family

"NCIS" on CBS. I've given this a shot, as...

K’Naan and Nas: Two Ways to “Manage” a Music Career
From one hip-hop artist, a leaked email exposing the ugly, angry side of the struggle between artist and label. From the other, a frank chat at the end of a long tour about owning one's art and brand. Two very different leadership lessons.

The leak late last week of an angry email from rapper Nas to the folks running the label that may or may not be putting out his new record this winter, Def Jam (subject: "Put my shit out!" -- text below), is shocking mostly because it was leaked at all. You hear plenty of rumblings in the press these days about artists battling their labels (Lupe Fiasco's Twitter-fueled protest outside of his label, Atlantic, for example), but you rarely get to see the explosion up close. Then again, it's a volatile time. Labels aren’t making as much money, the musicians aren’t making as much money,...

Nas' Email Slamming Bosses at Def Jam Revealed
Rapper Nas has fired off an angry email to label bosses at Def Jam, accusing them of treating him like a "slave" and disrespecting him by stalling the release of his forthcoming "Lost Tapes" album. The "I Can" hitmaker, real name Nasir Jones, proudly announced via his Twitter blog in September that he was preparing a sequel to his critically acclaimed 2002 disc "The Lost Tapes".

MTV News claimed the album would hit music retailers on December 14, but the project failed to appear on Def Jam's official schedule for winter releases, prompting rumors of a secret dispute between Nas and his label executives. Now the fall-out between the two parties has gone public after an email sent from Nas to Def Jam heads, including Antonio 'L.A.' Reid, leaked online.

In the email, titled Put My S**t Out!, the rapper slams his bosses for failing to "understand" the hip-hop...

Nas Accuses Def Jam Of Skimping On Lost Tapes: Vol. 2 Budget
Rapper's e-mail, telling label he's 'nobody's slave,' leaks to the Web.

By Steven Roberts, with additional reporting by Hillary Crosley

Nas

Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images

Last month, Nas announced via Twitter that Lost Tapes: Vol. 2, the sequel to his 2002 compilation of material that never made the cut, was on the way. But since then, it looks like his relationship with label Def Jam may have soured. The album's current release status is unknown, and a letter written by Nas and obtained by blog The Lefsetz Letter on Thursday (October 7) accuses label execs of not allotting the project a proper budget and not respecting the Lost Tapes movement.

MTV News spoke with an unnamed source from Nas' camp who confirmed the letter's authenticity. "It was a personal e-mail," the source said. "[The leak] wasn't planned. It was not meant to be blasted out in the world, but we're not upset about it.

Pajiba After Dark 9/28/10
Tonight's the Britney Spears episode of "Glee!" so all of us who were teenagers in the late 90's can feel nostalgic and fuzzy, or something. I'll confess that I find more than a few of Ms.Spears's singles to be pretty damn catchy, and "...Baby One More Time" is a spectacular pop song. And whatever else you can say about the woman (and there's a lot, and most of it has already been said somewhere at some point in time) she's put out six albums since 1999 and with all the shit she's gone through on a very public stage, she has yet to hit 30. She's a remarkable person, in every sense of that word. Of course, I also understand that tonight's episode will be focusing on everyone's favorite Cheerio, Brittany, which will either be awesome or render the character completely irritating. Here's Tuesday night's TV:

Exclusive: Nas Talks Lost Tapes: Vol. 2

Esco, let's go. Nas isn't the most prolific on Twitter, but he sent out a big blast on Wednesday (September 15), leaving a message all of his fans will love.

"It's coming... Lost Tapes Volume Two!!!" Nas posted on his page @nas.

The Queens native is finally following up his 2002 classic compilation, The Lost Tapes. That record was a potent mix of his tracks left on the cutting-room floor over the years. On Wednesday afternoon, MTV News got word from Nas' camp that The Lost Tapes: Vol. 2 will be released on December 14.

Speaking to us exclusively, Nas revealed he was feeling inspired these days and the Lost Tapes sequel is just a small taste of what's to come. He's about to...

Lloyd Banks Says 'Look Forward To Me Dropping New Records'
'Check the music — that's one thing that's not going nowhere,' the G-Unit Mc says.

Lloyd Banks has been hard at work since he returned to the States a few weeks ago. He called us up here at MTV News and although he was advised by his legal team to avoid speaking about his recent assault and robbery case, he did give details on upcoming music. There is an official LP that may drop around summer and an official single with Juelz Santana called "Beamer, Benz or Bentley" dropping in the next couple of weeks.

"I'm just starting back," he said. "I've been so focused with taking over the street and people hearing me back on that market — so when I come with the official records, they'll appreciate it more. 'Beamer, Benz or Bentley,' It's a club record, party record,...
