Have you checked out Love Next Door on Netflix yet? It's easily the best K-Drama to be released in August, so we strongly recommend adding it to your watchlist. Not only does it have an interesting premise that'll grab your attention right away, it also stars two well-known South Korean actors in the leading roles.
It's a Korean romantic comedy series coming from Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha creators Yoo Je-won and Shin Ha-eun. You might also recognize Je-won from his previous directorial work on the hit Netflix K-Drama Crash Course in Romance, while Ha-eun can be recognized for previously writing for the Korean shows Argon and The Crowned Clown.
It tells the love story of a project manager named Bae Seok-ryu, who decides to return to her hometown, hoping for a fresh start in life, and an old childhood friend and young architect, Choi Seung-hyo, with whom she shares a complicated past.

“Pleasant Outcast,” a 10-part Korean series that is set to appear at Canneseries next month, is a companion piece to “Concrete Utopia,” the hit film from last year that was selected as South Korea’s Oscar contender.
Both the Lotte Cultureworks series and “Concrete Utopia,” a dystopian drama-thriller set in a post-apocalyptic Seoul, are adapted from best-selling webtoon “Cheerful Outcast,” by Kim Soong Nyung. The film was frequently compared to William Golding’s seminal novel from the 1954 “Lord of the Flies” and its 1964 film adaptation.
Using the first part of the webtoon, the series follows Dong-hyun, a high school junior, who barely survives his day-to-day bullying at school. “When he wishes all were dead, an unexplained powerful earthquake destroys his school. Trapped in isolated circumstances, the hierarchy and power reshuffle as students struggle to survive, while continuous collapses and accidents kill more students. The endings of K-dramas are crucial to their success and viewer satisfaction, with many suffering from poor conclusions due to various factors. D.P., Bloodhounds, and Healer are examples of K-dramas with satisfying endings that resolve conflicts well and give characters their deserved outcomes. The endings of Tomorrow, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Move to Heaven, and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo are also notable for their emotional impact and the hopeful or happy resolutions they provide.
The growing popularity of K-drama is exposing the genre, and its engaging plots, to global viewers. Although it is often characterized by its numerous feel-good romcoms, that K-drama genre has many thrillers, comedies, and horrors up its sleeves. K-dramas like Squid Game and Business Proposal have gained global popularity for their engaging stories and short episode length, making them easy to binge. The cancellation of Joseon Exorcist and negative reviews for A Piece of Your Mind and Memories of the Alhambra highlight the impact of audience backlash on the fate of K-dramas.

Most K-dramas are only 16 episodes long, making them easy to binge. K-drama writers...

Issues of cultural diversity, different Asian diaspora populations and the quest for the Asian cinematic identity came up for discussion on Thursday as the New Currents competition jury at the Busan International Film Festival prepared to get down to work.
Filmmaker and academic Jung Sung-il, who is set as the jury president, appeared to invite a degree of dispute that might get the blood racing. “I have high hopes, hope for controversies and good conversations among the jurors,” he said in opening remarks. Later he added that he’d be open to championing a “glorious failure” as prize-winner if it contained a truly original scene or section over a slicker, but less innovative title.
Other jurors are: Han Junhee, Korean director of “Coin Locker Girl” and “Dp”; Eva Cahen, head of the Semaine de la Critique section at Cannes; Indonesian director Edwin (“Blind Pig Wants to Fly”); and Korean American...

Twinkling Watermelon will make you laugh out loud and cry within a span of minutes. At the risk of speaking too soon, we highly recommend this show. If you have a gaping hole for feel-good, slice-of-life family dramas, then put everything down and watch this show. It’s a shame we don’t get to see all the episodes at once, and even with an adorable premise (and cast), the show, in the usual K-drama style, has a lot of secrets that will probably be revealed very slowly, and we’ll have to painstakingly wait another six weeks for the show to be completed. Hyun-Wook, who is really getting acknowledged for his fantastic work, is already becoming a big star, playing roles in shows like “D.P.” and now with a lead role such as this one. He shines in comedy, and together with Ryeoun, they make a terrific duo. At the same time,...

Two years after co-starring in Netflix‘s hit “Red Notice” with Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot is back in the Top 10 charts for the week of August 7 with her action-thriller “Heart of Stone.” Read on for this week’s analysis.
Gadot’s undeniable star power was on full display as “Heart of Stone” only premiered on the streamer this past Friday, and it was able to easily top the English-language list with 33.1 million views worldwide. It was the #1 watched film in most of the Americas (except Canada), Africa, Asia and Europe, and a great start for what should be another Netflix hit. “Red Notice” is famously Netflix’s most-watched movie ever, with 230.9 million global views total, but “Heart of Stone” will give Gadot a good opportunity to show that she doesn’t need the boys to get viewers watching.

The second half of Season 2 of “The Lincoln Lawyer” put the popular crime drama back atop the Top 10 charts for the week of July 31, as far as the English TV list, but how did “Heartstopper” Season 2 fare after its August 3 debut? Read on for this week’s analysis.
It seems appropriate that we start with the TV chart this week, since two returning shows topped the English series list with the second half of the second season of “Lincoln Lawyer” receiving 6.7 million views, followed by “Heartstopper” in second place with 6.1 million views. “Lincoln Lawyer” was the #1 watched show in the United States, Canada, four European countries, as well as Australia and New Zealand, while “Hearstopper” was #1 in Mexico and a few other European countries, including the United Kingdom.
“The Witcher” Season 3 took third place on that chart with 5.4 million views, followed by Season 3 of “Sweet Magnolias” with 2.9 million views. The...

The second half of “The Lincoln Lawyer” Season 2 has pushed its way to the top of Netflix’s top 10 English-language TV list.
Since its return on Thursday, Part 2 of the legal drama has secured 6.7 million views for the week, bringing the season’s total views to 23.3 million. The first half of this installment was released over a month ago on July 6. Season 1 of the David E. Kelley series also reappeared on the list, securing the No. 6 spot with 2.1 million views.
“The Lincoln Lawyer” was then followed by the romantic return of Nick and Charlie thanks to Season 2 of “Heartstopper.” The young-adult series has received 6.1 million views since its Thursday premiere, putting it right ahead of last week’s TV leader, “The Witcher” Season 3 Part 2. The Henry Cavill fantasy thriller only secured 5.4 million views compared to last week’s 7.8 million views.

Japanese anime series took four of the top ten places in streaming service Netflix’s latest global chart of non-English-language shows. The top title of the week July 24-30 was Brazilian teen crime drama series “Sintonia,” in its fourth season.
Japanese animation series have long been key audience drivers in Japan and other parts of Asia. But their popularity – last year animated films filled four of the top five places at the Japanese theatrical box office – and their reach have been significantly expanded in the era of multi-territory streaming.
“Baki Hanma: Season 2” made its debut in the Netflix weekly chart in second place, with 6 million views worldwide and some 33 million hours watched. The streamer said that the action-crime series appeared in the top ten rankings of 80 countries. Adapted from a popular manga (comic book), the animated seroes is already headed for a third season.

Although a few movies have been dominating Netflix’s film charts for weeks, the Top 10 English film chart for the week of July 24 had a new entry in the action-comedy “Hidden Strike,” starring Jackie Chan and John Cena. Meanwhile, “The Witcher” returned to first place for TV. Read on for this week’s analysis.
Directed by Scott Waugh (“Need for Speed”), “Hidden Strike” was produced independently and sold to Netflix for worldwide streaming rights, a wise purchase considering that the film received 22 million views since quietly hitting the streamer last Friday. It was the #1 watched movie in roughly 50 territories worldwide, and made the Top 10 in 73 countries. Oddly, the United States was not one of them, since that honor went to “They Cloned Tyrone,” which received 11.1 million views worldwide in its first full week on Netflix, enough for third place.

The hit Netflix Korean drama D.P. is back with a second season of six episodes. The season picks up where it left off with the return of the central characters from the first: Jun-Ho, Ho-Yeol, Beom-Gu, and Captain Ji-Seob. While we didn’t particularly love this season, especially in comparison to the first, we still went through the whole thing pretty quickly. If you wish to read our complete review of Season 2, here is the link. Just like D.P. Season 1, the second one also ends with a mid-credit scene; this one is not as surprising but quite hard-hitting too. We’ll be breaking that down and also the real ending of the show, so read on to know it all.
Spoilers Ahead

The new season of D.P. is here, and this season takes a much calmer approach in comparison to its aggressive first counterpart. If you haven’t seen the first season, there will be a lot you won’t understand in this season, as it is a direct continuation of the first. The show follows a young man named Jun-Ho, who quickly becomes part of the Deserter Pursuit department of the military as he joins his mandatory military appointment. His partner is Sergeant Han Ho-Yeol, who is much more eccentric than the calm and resolute Jun-Ho. It’s evident very quickly that they make a great team and actually care to save the deserters rather than get them into any kind of trouble.
D.P. season 1 was beloved globally and made huge waves with its hard-to-digest subject matter, impressive screenplay and pace, and the emotional impact it had on the viewer. The...

The Netflix original D.P. was a super hit back in 2021, and the way it ended had everyone expecting a second season soon enough. Our wait is finally over, and the next season is just around the corner, sporting more emotional damage while still being fun for viewers. The series focuses on the mandatory military service of South Korean men for about two years before they turn 30. Particularly the hardship that the boys and men go through, the hierarchy system, and the bullying that happens within the military that reaches atrocious levels. Our main characters are a part of the D.P. (Deserter pursuit) department of the military, which happens to be the unit that apprehends deserters and brings them back. Season 1 explores the reasons the men choose to desert. The show is based on the webtoon D.P. Gaeui Nal, which translates to D.P. Dog Days, written by Kim Bo-Tong.

Korean production and distribution company Sll is riding high on the current box office success of “The Roundup: No Way Out,” the only local film this year to sell more than 10 million tickets.
In the larger TV production division, it is breathing a sigh of relief with the successes of “Doctor Cha” and “The Good Bad Mother,” shows which have achieved huge local ratings and placed in Netflix’s Global non-English Top 10 charts.
For the company, which rebranded last year from Jtbc Studio, and which acquired U.S. producer wiip, the renewed popularity of its shows represents something of a rebound after “the underperformance of Jtbc dramas in 2022.”
Now the challenge is to keep things fresh and original, while producing the high volumes of Korean content demanded by clients and frenemies that include Netflix, Prime Video and TVing — the Korean streaming platform in which Jtbc is a junior partner behind Cj Enm and Naver.

Toledo, Spain — In 2022, 32 U.S. titles ranked in a top 100 of most globally popular new scripted TV shows released in 2022.
30 South Korean series made the same Top 100, according to a study by London and L.A.-based consultancy Ampere Analysis presented Tuesday at Spain’s Conecta Fiction.
Ampere’s popularity score is a propriety metric based not on viewership but on the tracking of internet search volume received by a title each month as well as other measures, Ampere’s Alice Thorpe clarified at the presentation.
Nine of the Top 100 titles were Japanese. The fandom base of Korean series and Japanese anime are concentrated in teen and YA demographics, which are also most avid Internet users.

During a three-day visit to Seoul, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said the streamer is fairly compensating producers and nurturing new talent, after calls from some local lawmakers and industry figures for more profit-sharing with creators.
Sarandos said emerging writers and directors are getting more breaks as a result of its investment, while global breakout shows like Squid Game had created thousands of jobs. “Between 2022 and 2025 for example, one in five of our titles made for Netflix will come from a first-time writer or first-time director,” he told a press conference in Seoul on Thursday (June 22).
South Korea has produced some of Netflix’s biggest global shows – including Squid Game, The Glory and Extraordinary Attorney Woo – and the streamer announced a $2.5Bn investment in Korean content in April.
