A Deadly Invitation

This Mexican murder mystery opens with a variety of people being invited to the home of Olivia Uriarte. They include Olivia's sister Agatha, who runs her own true crime podcast; Olivia's ex-husband and other people she knows. When they arrive they are assigned specific rooms but there is no immediate sign of their host. She meets them later aboard a boat. Once together she tells them how each of them has a motive to kill somebody in the group. In the morning Olivia is found dead. To complicate matters at the time the boat is positioned where two police jurisdictions meet. While it is decided who should investigate the guests stay in the house and a junior police officer along with Agatha start asking questions and exposing secrets.

I thought this will was okay; not terrible but not great either. The mystery is intriguing enough and there are some decent twists but there is also far too much standing around talking. I know some viewers had a problem with the main investigator being an amateur rather than the police officer but that has been a genre staple for about as long as there have been murder mystery stories. Inevitably there are quite a few clichés but the final resolution worked for me and felt somewhat original. The acting is decent enough and the location used is impressive. Overall It is distinctly sub-Christie but is okay if you like the genre and fancy watching something set somewhere more exotic than the typical English village.

These comments are based on watching the film in Spanish with English subtitles.

Confusing plot

Spanish film with people brought on a yacht by Olivia (Maribel Vertu), including her sister Sonia (Stephanie Cayo), a detective.

Olivia announced that she has a surprise for all of them. Shortly afterward she falls to her death.

Since the yacht is between two jurisdictions, Sonia works on the case - who killed her sister, and why have all these people been gathered here?

This is a convoluted story - the people are connected by a tragedy that took place in Olivia's and then-husband Carlos' life. The ex is also on the yacht, along with Olivia's nemesis, a yoga instructor, a housekeeper, a workman, and later on, a detective.

We aren't given much to go on. At the end, Sonia, with everyone gathered together in true mystery style, reveals the elaborate plot.

This plot was complicated, and I'm not really sure how Sonia figured it out.

It's not horrible, but it has no intensity or interesting atmosphere. We don't get to know the people very well.

who dunnit... nod to murder by death

In the united states, its a deadly invitation. In mexico, it's invitación a un asesinato. Which is really invitation to an assassination! The family and friends of olivia are invited to a trip aboard a yacht off mexico. But it's not really a pleasure trip... it could be deadly, she tells them. And when someone is indeed knocked off, agatha (no coincidence) helps the cops try to solve the murder. Some similarities to murder by death.. where the participants are all connected to the host. And each other, in some way. Not a lot of information yet on imdb. Currently showing on netflix. Hopefully someone with a better command del español can fill in the many blanks and fix up the cast list! Directed by josé cravioto. Based on the book by carmen posadas. And throw in a dash of agatha christie. It's way over-simplified, but it's fun.

Bad acting, bad story

I think the script was written by middle schoolers. The dialogue is terrible. Stupid clues that make no sense eg. The yoga instructor eating with his left hand meant he never went to India. Yes, someone who vacationed in India is taking on all their customs. Plot points and revelations are utterly predictable too. Some had me rolling my eyes. The acting is ridiculously bad-particularly the "actor" that played the detective and the victims sister. He's straight out of some community play and she simpers and clings to her love interest like he's isn't creepy and gross with bad makeup and hair. The female protagonist is okay but has no personality. Don't waste your time.

Bore fest

Just boring to watch this whodunit movie. The main lead does all the work and police keeps listening to her just because she has podcast on solving cases. She has authority to call others, go outside and all others are confined in the mansion. After 15 mins you will just want to fast forward it to the end to know the culprit. They tried to copy from knives out but failed badly The cast is total let down. Need to fill in some text to complete the character requirement. Just copying the above.

Just boring to watch this whodunit movie. The main lead does all the work and police keeps listening to her just because she has podcast on solving cases.

Inaccurate facts about India and tepid storyline

Factual inaccuracies about India about eating with left hand custom. Copied storyline from multiple movies, no originality. The actors do not carry their weight and appear 90% of the time vapid and listless. Waste of time and resources. How a podcast presenter is allowed to lead the interrogation as the police stands by, is beyond comprehension. No one else but the main actress is allowed to call others with no clear reason other than her presenting a famous podcast series. Glasses are more of a recording accessory than necessity for the main actress who leaves no stone unturned to snoop around even before anything happens.

Deserves -1 rating.

Intrigue and black humor!

I wasn't going to see this movie because I thought it was going to be about divas on a yacht, sex and drugs or something like that. The truth is that I found it very entertaining and different. The story may be somewhat cliché, yes, we already know it, but this one has very unexpected and original twists until the very end, and it is very comfortable to watch, with great landscapes and photography of Mexico, and some good actors, not all. Regina Blandón and Maribel Verdú are the stars!

The reactions of this funny group of friends after a dramatic situation could have been more real, although that gives it that touch of parody and eccentricity, that's what it's all about.

They also could have used more and better humor, since the jokes are somewhat bland.

It's like watching a long episode of the English series 'DEATH IN PARADISE', which I love. Even the movie poster!

Much better than I expected, and I think the rating is too low, this movie it's sarcasm, parody, and adventure with that good feeling of mistery to be solved on the beach and vacation atmosphere that we all like.

I definitely recommend it, very refreshing and original, just to have a good and chill time. And with a totally unexpected ending.

Same old same old

Booriiiinggg. It is no need to comment too much. I finished 15 minutes and I can say enough fake agatha Christie stories please! This is not convincing. I felt lots of vibes from this movie. Everybody does something very suspicious and also from the beginning in podcast part, she says 'if you look at details, you can solve' and you try to not miss anything and this is really boring. Every scenes are so tiring! I didn't like it. I can say that. I think for this genre, every thing has been said and no new anymore. My words finished here. It was in my list and I think I will not finish the movie. Because it didn't capture me.

Mystery: Murder

I know it usually called Murder Mystery - so no pun intended as always if you will. That said, you have to have a special humor and a vested interest in the genre - that is crime movies but also the whodunnit aspect of it all. Are you interested? Do you like it when you can keep guessing? Not that this movie is anywhere close to the greats (that includes the recent Daniel Craig movies with Glass Onion and so many others).

The acting is ok, the movie itself knows what it wants to tell - though the pacing could be better I reckon. We do have some flaws and some inconsistencies to overcome. Nothing too major ... but I also reckon many probably will know where this is heading, before it ends up there ... still it is fun and what more could you ask of a movie?

Light mystery. Slow burn

Agata (Regina Blandón) is invited to her half-sister's mansion on the beach in Los Cabos for a mystery dinner in A DEADLY INVITATION. It turns the host, Olivia (Maribel Verdú), has gathered a group of people together who all have secrets they don't want revealed. She explains over a luxury dinner aboard a yacht why each might want others gone. The guests include soon-to-be ex-husband Carlos (Pedro Damián), yoga instructor Naram (Aarón Díaz) and his girlfriend Sonia (Stephanie Cayo), doctor Figue (José María de Tavira), and famous actor Cary (Manolo Cardona). After a murder on board, they arrive back to Olivia's mansion, where police and house staff await. Agata convinces a junior detective to let her begin investigating the crime.

Forget the bad ratings! Really!

In my view even better than Knives Out. And that means something. Watch it, you will not disappointed!

This is, if you like mystery movies with actually a great plot. I don't think anybody can see the outcome of this movie - which is something to really point out. Its new and not another sequel of Agatha Christie movies (which lately just had bad CGI, poor stories and actors).

How can anybody find this movie boring? I know, its not a Marvel movie (THANK GOD). Its really well played, has a great story, fresh characters and is just fun to watch. It even has some great humor. In my view one of the better new movies in this area. Again: Watch it in full - and not just 15 minutes.

A lighter mystery for fans of Glass Onion ilk.

Gorgeous remote seaside backdrop for a film that is Similar to Glass Onion and Then Then There Were None, but lighter and Mexican. The acting was decent and I think cosy mystery fans and hardcore fans of Glass Onion might like this.

The story follows true crime podcaster Agatha as she is invited with five other acquaintances to an evening at her half-sister's seaside estate. On the first evening her sister, Olivia, plummets to her death while they are all onboard for a dinner and overnight at her bequest. Olivia is an eccentric millionaire and at the dinner she announced someone was going to be murdered, Agatha just didn't believe it would be her sister. Now Agatha along with a rookie cop is determined to solve her murder...luckily all the suspects are trapped at their seaside location.

I loved the secret doors and the revelations about their past...along with some decent detective work, but this is definitely on the lighter side of sleuthing.

My review is based on watching this film in it's original Spanish language with English subtitles.

Love. Justice. Forgiveness. Freedom.

Agatha gets invited to join her sister Olivia's yacht party along with several other elite people. Agatha is a crime enthusiast and runs her own podcast. On the yacht, Olivia reveals the one of her guest won't make it back to the shore and that they will have contemplate their lives up until then as that boat ride could be their last. As they are woken up to a thud leading to a dead Olivia in the high seas, it is upto Agatha to solve the mystery and catch the culprit. How she does that forms rest of the story.

The film gets derailed once the on screen death happens and it barely gives enough to buy into the mystery. Since the whole reveal was about delivering the what the flower stood for, let me try to put forth my analogy in those terms..

1. Love = The makers feel the bunch of characters they have are enough to pull off this story. But there is literal lack of bonding between then especially Agatha and Olivia, who are sisters while there is a mention of loss of a loved one that got them distant but, the death of Olivia barely gets any emotion out of Agatha who at best is an amateur crime enthusiast solving the mystery in an hackneyed manner. There is enough love for the genre but nothing transcends onto the screen.

2. Justice = The whole reveal has this as a major aim i.e. Get justice to the deserving. Sadly, the writing denies it as the reveal itself is far from convicinving and the way it is narrated, just complicates it further when seen from a broad perspective, the crime was pretty much over simplified as it is and so were the main suspects.

3. Forgiveness = It is a bit hard to but as an audience, will have to forgive the makers for a bland product. For all the talk about able to forgive and move on, among the characters, it comes way too late and hardly has any impact.

4. Freedom = the film ended and the instant feeling I got was, well Freedom. Not that I kept comparing it with the recent murder mystery films including the Knives Out, but the weak writing made this a tiresome experience, enough to feel free once the film ended. Also, there was no need to show the police as so dummies, glad they were free to from this case in the end.

Enjoyable Light Mystery

A bunch of quirky personalities are assembled at an exclusive Mexican location only to realize there may be a killer in their midst. So right away we know this is a NAFTA-knockoff of Agatha Christie; and it's more or less what you'd expect. The cast is charming and the movie maintains an affable darkly-comedic tone. There are two major flaws. First the movie extols the viewer to follow along and solve the mystery; but it doesn't provide enough information and the solution relies on flashback exposition dumps. Second it spends far too little time setting up the mystery and potential red herrings; and far too much time on explicating the resolution. Overall reasonably enjoyable but not as good as it could or should have been.

Forget the bad reviews, really

I very much enjoyed this movie. Lately I have been seeing a lot of science fiction and wanted a little break from it. I must admit the reason I picked this movie was the one review that said 'Forget the bad reviews, really'. I picked the same headline for my review hoping that two reviews with same headline will amuse other potential viewer and get them to see it.

I remember Roger Ebert once explained his thumbs up and down review system as simply his advice to viewer to either go see the movie or not. My 10 stars are also in the same spirit. I don't care to rate the movie as such but rather simply telling you that 'I would advice you to spend your time on it'.

I won't take too much of your time here talking about the movie, but only say that I did not notice anything wrong while I was watching and I did not feel like taking a break.
