Night of the Hunted, the latest film from Franck Khalfoun is a remake, but not of Jean Rollin’s 1980 paranoid thriller of the same name, though that would be a logical choice for rebooting in these conspiracy-riddled times. Instead, he and co-writer Glen Freyer have reworked and updated Rubén Ávila Calvo and David R.L.’s 2015 Spanish thriller Night of the Rat.

New Release Wall

One of the best films of 2021, the Oscar-nominated “West Side Story” (20th Century) arrives on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD and earns an immediate place in your library. This first release is a little lean on extras, but it does include a new documentary from Laurent Bouzereau, the king of “making-of,” offering a look at Steven Spielberg’s process in crafting this electrifying musical.

After witnessing an alien abduction as a child (and subsequently being told she’s crazy for most of her life) Aurora, now a young woman, joins the UFO cult The Cosmic Dawn after discovering a book written by the group’s leader, Elyse. Aurora’s time at the cult’s remote island compound is marked by miraculous revelations, consciousness-expanding flowers, and a burgeoning friendship with Tom, the resident cook. When a fellow cult member starts to display increasingly bizarre behaviour, Aurora begins to question Elyse’s sanity (and her own) and starts looking for a way out.

Years later, after the dissolution of the cult, Aurora has moved on with her life. She leads a quiet and seemingly normal life. But when Elyse resurfaces in a mysterious video, Aurora is forced to confront her past.

Hey everyone! While Valentine’s Day is almost over, we’re sure you’ll still have a lot of love for this week’s horror and science fiction home media releases. One of this writer's favorite films of all time, Joe Dante’s The Howling, is getting the 4K treatment from Scream Factory in a brand new release, and if you’re into time-bending sci-fi/action thrillers, you’ll definitely want to pick up the 4K release of Rian Johnson’s Looper as well.

Exclusive: Clay Epstein’s Film Mode Entertainment (Fme) has bolstered its slate for the virtual European Film Market (EFM) with several fresh titles.

The company will present three features to international buyers for the first time on behalf of Screen Media, a Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment Company, including the newly-acquired comedy Dear Elizabeth.

The pic is directed by Scott Abramovitch and stars Tony Hale and Elisha Cuthbert. It follows a man who leads a dull life until he accidentally stalks an old college classmate, actress Elizabeth Banks, on social media. With each failed attempt to prove he knows her, he rediscovers more of himself and the true meaning of friendship.

The project was produced by Scott Abramovitch and David J. Phillips, and executive produced by Daniel Norris Webb, Tony Hale, Jamie Abramovitch, Andrew Kurzon, Salamo Levin and Tony Manolikakis.

Where the majority of alien encounter-themed films are concerned, one is either with the believers or against them. In that regard, Cosmic Dawn is a breath of fresh air. It begins with an encounter scene of sorts, sure, but not much is shown to us directly there, and our protagonist is a child at the time, so it’s possible that it was all in her imagination. This leaves an air of uncertainty hanging over what follows, which enhances numerous other aspects of the film.

Exclusive: Good Deed Entertainment has acquired all North American rights to basketball documentary Alaskan Nets, which is exec-produced by Chris Pratt and his production company Indivisible Productions.

The film is set on a remote island off the coast of southeast Alaska that is home to the Tsimshian Natives and Alaska’s last remaining native reserve, Metlakatla. For more than a century, two sacred traditions have defined Metlakatla: fishing and basketball. In an improbable journey, two cousins lead their team and town in search of their first state championship in more than thirty years—the only thing that will bring life back to an island that has been rocked by unimaginable tragedy.

Exclusive: levelFILM and Cranked Up, the genre-leaning arm of Good Deed Entertainment, have acquired North American rights to writer-director Jefferson Moneo’s sophomore feature Cosmic Dawn, starring Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage) and Camille Rowe (The Deep House).

The film tells the story of a woman who, after witnessing the alien abduction of her mother as a child, is drawn to a UFO cult called The Cosmic Dawn. A Q1 2022 release is currently in the works following a planned festival run.
