Phew... That was intense... Jump scares, tension, effects and plot twists, 'Coming Soon' has it all. It's not a horror film to ignore if you like the genre. One gets more and more appreciation for Thai filmmakers as they definitely know how to scare you.
The first 15 seconds of the film sets up the tone of the story and you know that it's not going to be an easy ride. One thing that struck me in particular is the scene construct that I noticed throughout the move. Familiar close up on the character with the villain in the background where we observe an unaware or suspicious look of the person. We know it's coming but we think there is still time to prepare. But then. Snap! Campera changes to POV and we see the perpetrator right there. A great recipe for a jump and a scare.
The spine-chilling scenes were mostly intertwined with 'not so scary', bordering on comical ones. The characters were slightly overacted and sometimes chucklesome. The cliché relationships took away a chunk of the splendidness of the film. However.
These imperfections were covered up with a great scare scenes set up, the perpetrators back story and the fact I couldn't sleep half of the night as I couldn't erase the death stare of the villain from my mid.
I will definitely take a break from the horror genre for a couple of days.

This is a story about a movie-house and its denizens. Two projectionists snag a horror movie to bootleg a copy, but they get caught. Plus, having this movie in your possession isn't such a good idea; it's haunted by the main character in its horror story and now she's coming for them. This is just an ok horror story with few real scares. The visuals of the scary hanged woman who kidnaps children and gouges out their eyes, though, are frightening indeed. The scary-gory ghost is one of the few good things in this flick.
It has a semi-original idea and interesting enough setup but then doesn't really go anywhere interesting. Falls victim to the usual Asian tendencies for sappy relationships and sentimental nonsense. The CGI scares are fine but you don't care enough about the plot to get much out of it. Feels like they could only afford two main actors and filmed the rest in as few locations as possible. Our main duo then proceed to go on your stereotypical clue hunt where they progressively uncover what is meant to be a surprising and satisfying plot.
The whole thing just doesn't hold up 'cause of the corny way people act. It almost comes off more like a drama or low grade thriller than anything resembling horror.

I always say that if it is not that great, nor bad, it goes perfectly in the middle, so 5 it is! But Coming Soon did try to surpass its condition, therefore, I'll show my appreciation giving it a solid 6!
Why? Because I had fun watching it, some good horror elements, good use of the audio, an ending harder to anticipate than usual, overall, a nice time in front of the screen! So I wont give you any hints, with the exception of "Try It!" and thank me later, Coming Soon, may not be something everyone heard of, but it does not make it any less better than most such productions. Underrated, underground, unheard, does not translate into bad! Watch it, works perfectly for a night late horror!
Cheers!

Watching this movie for the second or third time after 13 years and it still giving me the creeps at some scenes! Especially with the help of the ghosts' make-up which looks quite real and some effective jumpscares. Overall a classic Thai horror.
