Cahiers du cinéma Names David Lynch’s ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’ the Best Film of the Decade
The evolving landscape of the moving image, especially this last decade, has been the subject of endless discussions which we predict will only amplify in the decade(s) to come. Capping off the 2010s, France’s esteemed publication Cahiers du cinéma have now unveiled their best of the decade list and it will surely further ignite the conversation of how we define cinema.

Topping their list is David Lynch’s 18-hour masterwork Twin Peaks: The Return, which fittingly is getting an epic new home video release before the decade comes to a close. The endlessly inventive Holy Motors, Leos Carax’s only film of the ‘10s, came in at the number two spot, while Bruno Dumont’s eccentric 3.5-hour murder mystery of sorts, Li’l Quinquin, is number three.

If one has been paying attention to their yearly best-of lists then the rest shouldn’t be much of a surprise,...

Tiff Cinematheque Unveils Best Of Decade Movie List Including ‘Moonlight’, ‘The Master’ & ‘Ida’
The Toronto Film Festival today unveiled The Best Of The Decade: An Alternative View, a top ten movie list from the last decade. Tiff asked film curators, historians, and archivists from Canada and around the world to choose the best films of the 2010s — any length, genre, or format. Judging by the list, it’s fair to say that superhero movies weren’t front of mind.

Coming out on top of the arthouse list was…Lucrecia Martel’s 2017 festival favourite Zama, the dreamlike tale about a Spanish officer in Seventeenth century Asunción, Paraguay, awaiting his transfer to Buenos Aires. Plenty of great movies make the cut. Check it out below.

“Many of the films in the poll’s top 10 address the perilous era we have just lived through, with such prescient works as Film Socialisme, Neighboring Sounds, and Sieranevada predicting various types of ecological, political, and social calamity,” said Tiff Senior Programmer James Quandt.

Nanni Moretti/We Have A Pope Tops Cahiers Du CINÉMA 2011 List
Michel Piccoli, We Have a Pope

Nanni Moretti's Habemus Papam / We Have a Pope was the top movie of 2011 according to the Cahiers du Cinéma editors and film critics. The Cahiers du Cinéma list is available in the December print edition of the French magazine.

A Vatican-set satire about a newly elected, psychologically fragile pope (European Film Award Lifetime Achievement winner Michel Piccoli) and his therapist (Moretti himself), earlier this year We Have a Pope won six awards from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists, including Best Director and Best Producer (there's no Best Film category). Margherita Buy co-stars as another psychotherapist.

Tied in second place were Manoel de Oliveira's Portuguese drama O Estranho Caso de Angélica / The Strange Case of Angelica, about a photographer (Ricardo Trêpa) who becomes obsessed with the dead daughter (Pilar López de Ayala) of a wealthy hotel owner, and Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life,...
