Original Karate Kid Title Was Pretty Bad Reveals Cobra Kai Star Ralph Macchio
Image
Since the movie's release back in 1984, The Karate Kid has become synonymous with that era of filmmaking, but would it have been so popular had the creatives behind it gone with their alternate title? During a recent interview, Karate Kid and Cobra Kai star Ralph Macchio was asked whether he approved of the eventual title, with the actor revealing that, while he was skeptical at first, it sounded like poetry when compared with the alternative.

"I thought, and I was not the only one who thought, it was kind of a hokey, kind of a cheesy title for a movie being directed by the guy who made Rocky. But maybe it was foreshadowing. Maybe I thought if I ever got the part I'd have to carry the damn thing for the rest of my life... I think John Avildsen, our director, said maybe it's East Meets West in West?"

That Awkward Moment Blu-Ray Review
There’s scarcely an original thought to be found in That Awkward Moment, the self-proclaimed “modern” romantic comedy debut of Tom Gormican, and that won’t matter one bit to the majority of its target audience. With stars as ebullient and zeitgeisty as Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan and Imogen Poots, there was never much need for the film bring anything new to the table. Still, it would have been nice if Gormican, who both wrote and directed, could have relied a little less heavily on genre clichés.

Efron, Teller and Jordan star as a trio of successful, handsome twentysomethings sharing an apartment in New York City. Jason (Efron) is the perpetual player, devoted to one night stands and resolute in his determination to stay detached from all commitment. Daniel (Teller) shares Jason’s hedonistic outlook, though he clearly feels less strongly about staying single than his buddy.

Julianna Margulies in The Good Wife (2009)
'Cosmos' ratings rise on Easter Sunday
Julianna Margulies in The Good Wife (2009)
It has risen! Fox’s big gamble on a science show went up in the ratings on Easter Sunday. Cosmos rose 8 percent last night to tie CBS’ The Good Wife in the ratings.

The media has been pretty hard on Cosmos. But for an educational program airing after a bawdy cartoon that’s inspired fart joke montages on YouTube, it’s performed fairly decently. Across all platforms, including streaming, the show is racking up 10.9 million viewers, and is likely to have a long rental afterlife (and just karmically, the network that brought us Moment of Truth owed us this one...

Studio: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Comedy movie That Awkward Moment looks at the time in every relationship when the couple wonder, where is this going?

The romance stars Zac Efron (New Year’s Eve), Miles Teller (The Spectacular Now) and Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle) as twentysomething friends at that awkward moment as they try to navigate the tricky terrain of modern romance.

Written and directed by Tom Gormican, the R-rated film also stars Imogen Poots (Jane Eyre) and Jessica Lucas (Pompeii).

That Awkward Moment didn’t get much love from critics and that’s probably why it didn’t particularly shine at the box office, grossing $26 million.

The Blu-ray and DVD have a bunch of extras to up the value, though. Here’s the list:

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones Review
I’ve had a bit of a love-hate relationship with Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity franchise ever since the first horrifying incident featuring Micah, Katie, and the invisible demon destroying their relationship. To save you all a bland history lesson, Paranormal Activity caused me countless sleepless nights and Paranormal Activity 2 asserted itself as an adept horror watch, but I’m one of the few people who thinks Paranormal Activity 3 started a lame downward slide, and Paranormal Activity 4, well – woof. There’s a reason why I came into Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones with minimal enthusiasm and low expectations, but much to my surprise, writer/director Christopher Landon boldly reinvigorates a franchise quickly becoming bland, boring, and without any innovation – until now.

Expanding upon the Paranormal Activity universe, Landon introduces us to Jesse (Andrew Jacobs), a high school graduate who encounters evil forces and becomes what is known as “marked.

Paranormal Witness (2011)
'Paranormal Witness' Recounts Travis Walton's Alien Abduction
Paranormal Witness (2011)
Travis Walton disappeared for five days back in 1975. But what happened to him? "Paranormal Witness" recounted his story through interviews and reenactments. Walton said that through hypnosis, he was able to remember being taken on board an alien spaceship.

His abduction was witnessed by friends, who said the experience has haunted them to this day.

"I was afraid to look out the window. For a guy, 25 years old, being afraid you’re gonna see a spaceship," one of them, Ken Peterson, said emotionally. "Something that I haven’t gotten over. I wish I could."

Walton's abduction has been considered the most famous close encounter of all time, according to the New York Daily News. That said, though, in 2009 he appeared on the Fox game show "Moment of Truth, where a polygraph test said he was lying about what happened.

True or not, "Paranormal Witness" recounts terrifying tales every Wednesday at 10 p.

Thick as Blood – Living Proof Album Review
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Facebook

Release date: 10th July

*

Rolling through the sun-soaked streets of Miami, the heat bending the pavements and crawling out of the sewers like ants deserting their crumbling nest and swarming over their queen, the sweat chases down your back and snakes down your forehead. You turn the air-con to full and check that the windows are fully-wound down. They are. But the heat is too much, it’s making you light-headed and the warmth is ironing out your chest, flattening it, flooding it with husks of the afternoon sun. You need a drink. You pull over. You get out.

You head into the nearest bar, men with camel-tanned faces of Miami days and grizzled wrinkles ridged with the familiarity of Miami nights are huddled around chinked and worn wooden tables murmuring between themselves outside the bar. As you pass, they sit up and watch you...

'Girls': Play time for Adam and Marnie
When HBO's "Girls" left off last week, big revelations were hanging in the air (Adam and Hannah are now an official item, Jessa and Jeff's tension ended in disaster, and Shoshanna smoked crack -- !). But the momentum from the Bushwick warehouse party didn't quite continue into Episode 8, "Weirdos Need Girlfriends Too." The additional depth to Adam's life and his special brand of affection for Hannah isn't quite as convincing as his pervy one-dimensional characterization in previous episodes.

Marnie's (Allison Williams) stress is starting to wear her down, as she struggles to recover from her breakup with Charlie and his rapid rebound (and trip to Italy with his new squeeze). She anguishes in "being the uptight girl" and notes that "Charlie had to find someone else to go to Rome with."

Her heartbreak is the source of most of the moderate humor in the episode: She obsessively clicks through his Facebook...

Grey's Anatomy Review: The Pressure Is On
One in five. Things are not looking too good for our residents right now.

"Moment of Truth” had the gang travel to San Francisco for their oral boards and, boy, did they bring along some baggage. Let's discuss.

Exam Time. Meredith, Jackson, Alex, Cristina and April. That’s five. That means one of these residents is most likely not passing their boards. Is it Alex, who didn’t make it to his exam in time? Meredith, who was fighting a stomach flu? Cristina, the robot, dealing with her failing marriage? April, dealing with her lost virginity? Or Jackson, who’s lucky pencil broke right before the exam?

First Time Hookups. Another city, another state of mind. April decided to do the deed with the ridiculously hot Jackson Avery. First of all, it’s about time. There has been some chemistry between these two for a while. Second, how could you...

Elisabeth Shue, Thomas Haden Church, and Melissa Leo in Don McKay (2009)
'Grey's Anatomy' Fan Columnist: The Truth Stings
Elisabeth Shue, Thomas Haden Church, and Melissa Leo in Don McKay (2009)
"They started out with so little promise. I feel like I'm witnessing a miracle!" Oh, Bailey, how I love you (more on that later). So begins "Moment of Truth" in which our intrepid residents leave Seattle and head for San Francisco to take their oral board examinations, the test which will either make or break their careers. First came pep talks. "You are a soldier!" Owen insisted to April. "Kick ass!" Teddy hopefully advised Cristina. Mark offered Jackson a wad of cash and told him to only eat fresh salmon lest he lose omega threes. And with a tap of Bailey's hand on the shuttle bus, they were off.

One in Five People Fail the Boards

I found that rather disconcerting. A twenty percent failure rate for doctors? Yikes! And in one of the worst-kept secrets ever on television we already know that one of our five residents will fail the boards.

'Grey's Anatomy' Interview with Sarah Drew: April is 'Super Freaked-Out'
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
In a year when the weather is topsy turvy, here are three sure signs of spring: baseball, taxes, and May Sweeps. Yes, the 2011-2012 television season is careening towards closure at a frenzied pace. Gone are the mid-winter doldrums with the endless sea of reruns and preemptions. In their place are brand new, eagerly-awaited installments of our favorite shows, all culminating in cliffhanging season finales, but first things first.

The next few episodes of Grey's Anatomy will set the stage for what is coming in those last few episodes. This week's episode, "Moment of Truth" focuses on the residents as they head to San Francisco to take their board examinations and it's looking like things don't go smoothly, either personally or professionally, leading to fallout in next week's installment, "Let the Bad Times Roll".  The residents make decisions about their futures in the penultimate episode of season eight, "Migration", which...

Four sneak preview clips from this week's all-new Grey's Anatomy show "The Moment of Truth" ahead for the fifth-year residents ... as well as some other potentially interesting developments on the romantic front.

First up, it's departure time. As the residents board the bus to go take the all-important boards, the senior surgeons are brimming with pride, and in some cases high expectations for their young proteges.

Even Bailey admits what a miraculous transformation this rag tag band of interns has made. Some are more anxious than others, though. While Cristina just wants to get it over with, April is petrified ...

Next, we have Richard filling in for a colleague and traveling to supervise the boards and watch anxious residents sweat it out, when he runs into none other than Catherine, who's there in the same capacity:

Grey's Anatomy Exclusive: Sarah Drew on Surprising Hook Up, "Gigantic" Season Finale Event
It's depicted in the Grey's Anatomy preview for tomorrow night's new episode, and Sarah Drew wasted no time getting right to the point of it when we talked on the phone yesterday:

Yes, April and Jackson "definitely hook up" on "Moment of Truth," the actress said, but she added: "I cannot reveal whether she gives up her V-card or not."

Well, alright then!

What can Drew reveal about what she admits was a "surprising" development between two characters who have been more like siblings than love interests over the past year?

"There's a lot of confusion between the two of them regarding what the relationship actually is after they hook up," said the star. "There's also something very cool revealed about April at the end of the episode and it plays into her relationship with Jackson. It becomes a point of conflict."

If April and Jackson do become an item,...

G. Dep, Ex-Bad Boy Rapper, Found Guilty Of Murder
He faces 15 years to life in prison when he's sentenced May 8.

Former Bad Boy rapper G. Dep, born Trevell Coleman, was convicted of second-degree murder in New York on Tuesday (April 17) following a trial that began after Coleman admitted to killing a man in 1993 during a botched robbery attempt.

In late 2010, Coleman came forward to confess that he'd shot a man, identified by police as John Henkel, nearly two decades earlier in Harlem. According to Coleman's story, he attempted to rob a man on a Harlem corner, then shot him and rode off on a bicycle, not knowing whether the victim had survived.

Opening statements in the trial were made last week, on April 10, and one day later, Coleman dropped a bombshell on prosecutors by changing up his story. He claimed that while he did shoot someone, it was not Henkel.

From small screen to hits on 70mm!
Shah Rukh Khan, Vidya Balan – What do these names have in common? Apart from being superstars of the day, both Srk and Vidya made their acting debut in television slowly moving on to enthrall the silver screen audience. Inspired by the tales of the likes of Srk and Vidya, every year many TV stars attempt to shift gears to the big screen with the hope of repeating the success stories. Some get lucky; some others either vanish or return back to the small screen. The Friday gone-by; saw the release of Bittoo Boss, which introduced newbie Pulkit Samrat. If the name sounds vaguely familiar, it is because Pulkit played the much-loved role of Lakshya Virani, in Indian Soap Opera ‘Kyunki Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu thi’, Indian televisions second longest running and most popular show. While the verdict on Pulkit’s journey from small screen to 70mm remains to be decided,...

Grey's Anatomy Photo Gallery: "Moment of Truth"
On the April 26 episode of Grey’s Anatomy, it's the "Moment of Truth" for the residents.

Meredith, Cristina, Alex and their cohorts travel to San Francisco for the oral boards, a critical moment in their careers that may also dictate whether one or more cast members return for a ninth season.

Accepting a job at another hospital makes for a convenient "out," after all. While it's unclear if anyone will leave Seattle, expect the old Cristina to return and Mer to battle a health issue during the boards.

Meanwhile, sparks fly when Richard and Catherine (Debbie Allen) bump into each other at a hotel, and Alex feels guilty about being away from the hospital when Tommy's health takes a turn for the worse.

Death Watch 2012: Our fall TV survival predictions
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
The May upfronts are just around the corner! Death is nigh, my friends! Time to check the status of nearly all broadcast shows. Here’s what we’re hearing along with each show’s current adults 18-49 average rating:

Fox

Alcatraz: 3.4 rating. Status: Not hopeful: Monday’s finale was the lowest-rated episode for the season.

Allen Gregory: Dead

American Dad: 2.8 rating. Status: Renewed.

American Idol: 6.7 Wednesdays, 6.2 rating Thursdays. Status: It’s now a full-on team sport to bag on the aging music competition, but this franchise ain’t going anywhere (yet). The bigger question is how much the judging panel will change next season.

Shorts Worth Watching: Justin Gullett’s “Distortion”
I have featured Justin Gullett’s short film trailers before on this site and I am returning with another one. This one is called “Distortion” and believe it or not this thriller won Gullett a national award and three global awards through the online competition of the former reality series, “On the Lot,” known as the “Movie Making Challenge.” The American Idol-esque reality show was produced by three-time Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg and reality TV pioneer Mark Burnett.

Gullet was a contestant on the TV show as well as participated in the at-home competition that allowed anyone to enter his or her own videos online through TheLot.com.

“Distortion,” won week five — horror week — of the online challenge in where anyone could submit a two- to three-minute film for that week’s genre or theme. Here is where Gullet was about to pull out of the competition decided...

Fox plans dating game show from 'Idol' team -- Exclusive
Fox is jumping back in the game show business with an ego-bruising format that puts singles looking for love to the test.

The network is casting for a stateside version of the UK hit Take Me Out (video clip below).

Here’s the pitch: A single man tries to impress a panel of 30 single women who each control a lighted podium. One by one, the women switch off their lights if they lose interest. If the man survives the initial rounds and avoids a “blackout,” the scenario changes — the remaining women compete for him until only one remains.

There are...

'Survivor: South Pacific': Cochran, secret agent man
"Survivor: South Pacific" heats up as Cochran goes all secret agent man on us.

Post-Tribal

The Savaii tribe are hoping and praying the merge happens and everybody's pretty tense about being down Ozzy. Cochran's pretty pumped about his role as a double agent when they do merge. His Al Pacino needs work.

Redemption Island

Ozzy plays up the Cochran-used-the-Idol ploy and Christine seems to buy it. Ozzy talking-heads that this move was either the "stupidest" or the "craziest, ballsiest" move. I'd say all three.

For the duel, everyone is there from each tribe, which obviously belies a merge. Ozzy severely overacts his part and Albert, Rick and Coach are not buying his story one whit. The duel is to use a long stick to retrieve keys and unlock a gate. The winner comes back into the game at this point.

Naturally, Ozzy wins. Sigh. I was really hoping that move...

Court upholds government notice on TV reality show
The Delhi High Court Friday upheld the show cause notice the information and broadcasting ministry issued to Star Plus channel for its telecast of two episodes of the controversial TV reality show .Sach Ka Saamna. in 2009.Justice S. Muralidhar turned down the plea of Star India Private Ltd., and said that the content shown in the programme was .vulgar, indecent and against good taste and decency., violating the programme code prescribed under the cable television network rules..There appears to be little doubt that the programme did violate the rules.
