Animation has come a long way since its inception. The meticulous hand-drawn frames of yore have given way to digital techniques, and things like ink and paint have been replaced by Cintiq art tablets. However, one thing has remained the same: every animated work draws inspiration from something else.
Today, there are more remarkable animated shows to see than ever before. Disney and Hanna-Barbera no longer control the narrative. Now, audiences can find something to pique any interest. Shows like Amphibia and The Owl House appeal to the whimsical whims of fantasy fans. Anyone with an itch for something more mysterious can turn to Infinity Train and Gravity Falls. For comedy, Chowder and Regular Show are always available. All these shows seem wildly different, but they’re all connected to the same source. More specifically, their creators were all protégés of Thurop Von Orman and J. G. Quintel’s Cartoon Network show,...

Following the limited box-office success of "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," there's an argument that now might finally be the time to give up the ghost (corps) for good. Five films in, and the numbers suggest that the franchise isn't what it used to be. But then, had Ivan Reitman had his way, he probably wouldn't have let it get that far. During an appearance on Neal Brennan's "Blocks" podcast, Reitman's son and director of "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," Jason Reitman, revealed why his father never returned to the firehouse after "Ghostbusters II" to give the world a "Ghostbusters III." In an industry that thrived on giving us more of the same, Ivan Reitman was happier doing anything but, and might've preferred shutting the trap for good after "Ghostbusters" in 1984.
"My dad never understood sequels. My dad was like, 'I don't know why people want to return to this stuff,'" Jason Reitman explained.

Disney is eyeing Marvel star Chris Hemsworth for its live-action Prince Charming film. It was recently announced that Paddington director Paul King signed on to direct a film based on the Prince Charming character, who is something of a stock character among various Disney princes but is most commonly associated with Cinderella. Given the name Prince Charming, it certainly puts a lot of pressure on Disney to find the right actor to live up to that title, and the studio is pulling from its stable of Marvel stars to take on the role.
Deadline reports that Chris Hemsworth is in talks to play Prince Charming in the upcoming film. Hemsworth is best known for his portrayal of Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with 2011's Thor and most recently in 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder. After the immense success of Inside Out 2, a fan-made concept trailer imagines how the story of the franchise would play out in a live-action film. It's the latest video to utilize AI to picture what a live-action adaptation of an animated movie may look like.
The video was posted on YouTube by Multiverse of Movies. It's the same channel that has previously shared live-action movie concept trailers for animated shows like The Simpsons, South Park, and Futurama, as well as video games such as Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Other Pixar films have also gotten the treatment, including Toy Story and The Incredibles. Similarly, Inside Out has now gotten a concept trailer of its own, which was made with the assistance of AI-generated imagery.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the latest entry in the classic movie series, but when it comes to the box office, it seems that bustin' no longer makes audiences feel good. The movie had a mixed reception among fans and critics, and its financial performance has been even icier. Barely crossing $200 million Usd at the global box office, the movie proves that there might not be much more warmth to be found in the franchise.
Having long since its theatrical run, the performance of the Frozen Empire box office run is eerily similar to the rest of the series. This lack of growth underlies the main problem, as it's a property that seems to only barely survive through nostalgia. If the Ghostbusters have any chance at connecting with modern audiences, it'll be by finally escaping the shadow of the original movie.

Ghostbusters, also known as Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, was not met with the warmest reception upon release in 2016. Directed by Paul Feig, the movie was heavily criticized while having a disappointing box office run.
In a new interview with The Guardian, Feig addressed the Ghostbusters reboot getting such a harsh reception. He suggested it was largely due to the political climate of the time, as the film was released just months ahead of the contentious presidential election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Feig noted that people during that time were "looking for a fight," and when Trump himself publicly condemned the movie, it only increased the vitriol directed at the reboot.

Filmmaker Paul Feig says that Trump supporters made the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot into a topic of political discourse. Ghostbusters, later retitled Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, was directed by Feig and rebooted the iconic 1980s sci-fi horror comedy franchise with an all-female cast that included Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. While plenty of movies get reboots and remakes, 2016's Ghostbusters was a media nightmare, with people targeting it from the second the movie was announced before a single frame of footage was shot.
During an interview with The Guardian, Feig touched on the rough political landscape that 2016's Ghostbusters came out in. He noted that the movie's release during the presidential race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump made it a lightning rod for controversy, mainly when Donald Trump decided to weigh in on the film on his Instagram in January 2015, shortly after it was announced. Although its series finale originally aired on Starz back in 2017, Black Sails is still regarded as one of the best pirate shows of all time. Filled with complex characters and high production values, the show avoids common pitfalls of the genre like overindulging in sex and violence. Set during the Golden Age of Piracy, the series serves as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Treasure Island.
Black Sails tells the swashbuckling tale of Captain Flint and his crew as they fight for the survival of New Providence Island. Weaving real-life characters like Anne Bonny and Blackbeard into the fictional narrative gave a boost to the show's appeal. Fortunately, there is no shortage of great pirate shows for viewers who have finished Black Sails.

Between 1979 and 1989, Sigourney Weaver appeared in a slew of popular movies, starting with the sci-fi horror Alien. The actor recently reflected on that time in her career, saying that her Ghostbusters role came at the right time.
Speaking to Deadline, Weaver explained that she was glad that playing Dana Barrett allowed her to move away from the seriousness of her Alien character. "I was so relieved! Ripley was so serious, you may even say humorless in her circumstances," she said. "I had come from comedic theater and that's where I felt most comfortable. When I read Ghostbusters, it knocked my socks off."

Netflix announced a Ghostbusters animated series back in 2022, but the development of the series has been quiet until now. 1984's Ghostbusters became such a hit with children around the world that before a sequel arrived in 1989, the franchise spun off into a popular animated series titled The Real Ghostbusters, which ran for seven seasons. Fandom for some of the biggest franchises has taken a dark turn in recent years, whether it's the sci-fi saga of "Star Wars" (which saw "The Acolyte" review-bombed), the superheroes of Marvel and DC Comics, or the paranormal phenomenon of "Ghostbusters." But it's the latter film series that might be the top contender for being soaked in the most vitriol, thanks to the innocuous decision to reboot the franchise with *gasp* four women in the lead roles.
"Ghostbusters," which eventually went on to have the more specific title of "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call," was directed by Paul Feig and starred Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as new characters who gear up to stop a paranormal apocalypse in New York City. Long before the film was released, there was nasty "hate-filled" backlash from chauvinistic fans who couldn't handle four women stepping into the role of scientists turned ghost exterminators.

The 2016 reboot starred a women-led cast that featured Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as the four ghostbusting stars, while Chris Hemsworth joined them as an assistant. The controversial Ghostbusters movie earned $229.1 million at the box office, a weak showing compared to the $144 million budget. Aykroyd admitted that enjoyed the movie but believed the cost was too immense.

Dan Aykroyd supports the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot with female cast, praising their performances and the film's unique vision. Online hate and divisiveness surrounding the movie reveals audience entitlement and bias against the all-female cast. Aykroyd commends the new cast for stepping into iconic roles, emphasizing the film's entertainment value despite online backlash.
Original Ghostbuster Dan Aykroyd, who played Dr. Ray Stantz in Ivan Reitman's 1984 horror comedy Ghostbusters, has shared his approval and support for the 2016 reboot of the same name directed by Paul Feig. Saying that the 2016 version was met with an obnoxious reaction by internet users is an understatement. The film still has the power to divide the waters between those who understood Feig's standpoint and the online trolls who didn't care for the movie's biggest change: the all-female cast.

From Blumhouse Television, the documentary series “Worst Roommate Ever” highlights harrowing tales of seemingly harmless roommates turning into real-life nightmares for their unsuspecting victims, and that series (which airs on Netflix) was based on a New York Magazine article by William Brennan. Blumhouse is now turning that same article into a movie.
Variety reports this week that Paul Feig will direct the upcoming feature film thriller for Blumhouse.
The website details, “Feig’s film will follow a newly single woman who finds a ‘seemingly perfect gentleman’ to sublet a spare room in her home. However, she quickly discovers that his lies extend beyond providing a fake name and falsified application.
“She has unwittingly invited a serial squatter into her home and he’s not going to leave without a fight.”
Stephen Susco (Unfriended: Dark Web) wrote the screenplay.
Feig will produce with his producing partner Laura Fischer, alongside Jason Blum.

Paul Feig's anniversary tribute to 2016's Ghostbusters: Answer the Call sparked a wave of mixed reactions on social media. The all-female Ghostbusters reboot, starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, hit theaters eight years ago. Feig, who directed the film, marked the occasion by sharing a post on X (previously Twitter) from Ghostbusters News that wished the film's cast, crew, and fans a happy anniversary. Feig's message read: "8 years? Good lord. Thanks to all the fans and supporters of this film. Still incredibly proud of it. We are all Ghostbusters." Feig's post triggered a variety of responses from fans who loved the film, others who hated it, and some who didn't even know it existed.

The "Ghostbusters" franchise has been kicking around since 1984, thanks to director Ivan Reitman and the comedic bona fides of primary cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis (who also co-wrote the script), with a little help from Ernie Hudson as the blue collar guy who makes it easy for things to be explained to the audience. But the film series lay dormant for nearly 20 years, until Sony Pictures attempted to reboot the entire franchise from scratch in 2016 with Paul Feig's new "Ghostbusters," which would go on to get the subtitle "Answer the Call." More recently, "Ghostbusters" has been given new life, thanks to the nostalgic legacy-quel "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" and a new narrative thread following the once-estranged family of the late Egon Spengler.

Cartoon Network has always been a place of experimentation. In the early years, shows like "Dexter's Laboratory" brought Sam Raimi references to animation. In the early '00s, shows like "Samurai Jack," "Ben 10," and "Codename: Kids Next Door," added deep mythologies and more serialized storytelling. And in the 2010s, the network experimented with visuals in shows like "Flapjack" and "Adventure Time," which brought weirdness back into Cartoon Network.
This experimentation continued, with animators who got their start on the likes of "Flapjack" going on to develop influential and fantastic shows on their own. Still, as bold and imaginative as all these shows were, they were still mostly white men in charge of creating those cartoons. That all changed in 2013 with the release of "Steven Universe" -- one of the best cartoons of the century and a deeply emotional and inventive show inspired by superheroes and magical-girl anime. There are certain films that have barreled into the annals of pop culture, and Ghostbusters is one of them. It had a unique premise: professors Ray Stanz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), and Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) use their scientific know-how to build equipment capable of trapping ghosts. Marrying the type of high-concept pitch usually reserved for science fiction and fantasy films to an all-star cast of comedy veterans was a long shot, but it paid off...and is still paying off, with a multimedia franchise including film sequels following the astronomical success of the first film. But Ghostbusters II, Ghostbusters: Answer The Call, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire haven't met with the same level of success as the original film. There are a lot of reasons as to why the Ghostbusters franchise has more misses than hits, and it all stems from that first film's success.

"Dexter's Laboratory" changed the course of American TV animation. Like "Flapjack" after it, the cartoon gave many future legendary animators their start in the industry, from Craig McCracken and Butch Hartman to Rob Renzetti and one Seth MacFarlane. It also helped transform "The Powerpuff Girls" into a timeless hit.
The show started as a short in "What a Cartoon!" before becoming the very first Cartoon Cartoon. The man behind the show, Genndy Tartakovsky, has made hit after hit in a variety of genres and tones, from his influential "Star Wars: Clone Wars," to the devastatingly gory R-rated animated carnage of "Primal" or complex genre-bending tales of steampunk goodness like the criminally underseen "Unicorn: Warriors Eternal."
Much of Tartakovsky's style can be traced back to his work in "Dexter's Laboratory," from his use of silence to tell stories to his eye for iconography and imagery, along with his knack for pop culture references.

"Teen Titans Go!" is a bit of a controversial cartoon among fans, as it is a much more comedic, kid-friendly version of the 2003 "Teen Titans" cartoon (which was darker and more anime-inspired). Some fans see "Teen Titans Go!" as representative of the uber-commercialization of art, a cash-grab of a show with none of the heart of the original. Of course, to think that would be to ignore one of the most subversive, hilarious, and most of all, bizarre superhero animated shows to date.
Then there's the movie, which gave us some of the best moments in a DC film (like Robin enthusiastically pushing Thomas and Martha Wayne into Crime Alley so Batman can exist), but also the TV show itself which stands alongside "Regular Show" and "Flapjack" as often breaking Cartoon Network's "no weird" rule. There are episodes where Robin teaches the Titans about equity, pyramid schemes, and even the IRS.

The history of television is fascinating because you can trace lines between almost any modern show and one of the classics, as crews move from one show to another, bringing their past work and their influences with them. This applies to both live-action and animation. In the latter, many animators who start as writers or storyboard artists in one show end up creating their own series years later, bringing colleagues along with them, who then go on to create their own shows in return. Take "Dexter's Laboratory" launching the career of not just Genndy Tartakovsky, but also Craig McCracken, Rob Renzetti, Butch Hartman, and Seth MacFarlane, each going on to make a popular show.
What "Dexter's Laboratory" did in the '90s, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" did in the late 2000s. This is a show that helped launch several animation careers, with plenty of writers and storyboard artists...

Highly anticipated sequels like "Wonder Woman 1984" can still flop due to lack of stakes and plot issues. "The Matrix Resurrections" failed to capture the magic of the original trilogy, feeling more like a ticket ploy. "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call" lacked original story, leading to audience disinterest despite great female cast.
Despite having all the elements that can make a movie a hit, certain projects flop at the box office regardless of their quality. Though some highly built-up movies do turn out to have poor critical and audience reception, other films have genuine merit but still fail to capture attention at the theaters. Occasionally, it's difficult to tell if a movie bombs at the box office, because it appears its selling out plenty of screenings. However, the film's budget must be considered, as how much money was spent on the movie determines the profit margin.

When Dak Aykroyd and Harold Ramis penned the script for the original Ghostbusters nearly half a century ago, no one could have imagined the phenomenon the franchise would transform into. Admittedly, the films' popularity peaked in the late 80s and early 90s, but in the 2020s, the Ghostbusters IP is still going strong with the recent release of the newest film in the franchise, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Much like the ghouls our favorite blue-collar ghost hunters love to bust, Ghostbusters has managed to stick around long past its presumed expiration date. With five films, two animated television series, and one iconic theme song sung by Ray Parker Jr, the supernatural franchise continues to break new ground four decades after its initial release.

After Jim Samples, the Cartoon Network executive who oversaw the greenlighting of such successful cartoons as "Samurai Jack," "Ben 10," "Codename: Kids Next Door," and "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy," left, a new regime at the popular animation-focused cable channel changed tactics. When Stuart Snyder took over in mid-2007, he had a brand new mandate for Cartoon Network — no weird stuff.
Speaking with Buzzfeed, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" creator Thurop Van Orman recalled Snyder saying, "'We don't want anything weird or anything where any mom would come out of the kitchen and say, 'What are you watching?'"
Now, this is not to say that Snyder failed at that command, or that his definition of the word "weird" is different than this writer's, but his tenure was filled with shows you could call "weird" and would make a mom say "What are you watching?"

Ghostbusters 2016 received intense online hate, not just because it was a female-led reboot but also because it was different from the original. Feig's version brought new characters with fresh traits instead of mimicking the original Ghostbusters cast, adding value to the story. The 2016 film's screenplay stands out by creating a tangible antagonist, political twists, and excellent comedic chemistry among the cast.

It was a bit of a good news, bad news situation for Sony Pictures over the weekend. The good news is that "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," the latest entry in the long-running comedy/horror franchise, topped the box office with a $45 million haul. That was at the high end of expectations, which was certainly positive, and theaters could use the help right now. At the same time, the movie carries a $100 million budget — which was quite a bit higher than 2021's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife." And yet, at the end of the day, both movies opened to just about the same number domestically. This provides proof that this franchise has a pretty well-defined ceiling commercially, which likely limits what can be done going forward.
What's interesting is that the last three movies in the series all opened in an eerily similar range. 2016's female-led "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call" took in $46 million on its...

The 2016 Ghostbusters might be one of the most flames major productions of this century, with the trailer quickly becoming the most disliked on YouTube. There were a couple of camps here. One was targeted as being misogynistic, taking personal affront that their beloved characters had been replaced by women. While another is that there just didn’t seem like a point to it all. Why bother if you don’t have the original Ghosbusters? Well, one late recruit — Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore — has some thoughts on the matter.
As Ernie Hudson told The Independent, it seemed like a waste to make the Ghostbusters back in 2016, saying, “Look, I’m a fan of [director] Paul Feig so I have nothing negative about him to say. Other than: I don’t quite understand why you do a reboot, you know what I mean? Just make another movie.”

Backlash towards "Ghostbusters 2016" was intense, but there were unnecessary negative comments against all-female cast members. Melissa McCarthy defended the film and her fellow cast members against misogynistic and racist attacks. The negative reception of the 2016 remake led to a shift from reboots to sequels, such as "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," which received a more positive reaction.
Five years after the release of Ghostbusters 2016, Melissa McCarthy responded to the backlash the reboot received. The third film in the franchise, Ghostbusters was a basically remake of the 1984 film of the same name but with an all-female cast taking over as the members of the titular squad. That contributed to a box-office bomb, with the film grossing only $222.9 million, marking a $70 million loss (via Box Office Mojo).

Ghostbusters has officially joined the billion-dollar club at the box office.
Per Variety, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is opening domestically at $45.2 million with another $16.4 million earned from overseas markets, pulling in around $61 million worldwide. That will be enough to officially put the Ghostbusters franchise into the billion-dollar club, having reached $1 billion collectively at the worldwide box office. This follows the previous worldwide hauls earned by 1984's Ghostbusters ($295.6 million), 1989's Ghostbusters II ($215.5 million), 2016's Ghostbusters: Answer the Call ($229 million), and 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife ($204.3 million).

The Ghostbusters franchise is a pop culture behemoth. It started back in 1984 with a hilarious film about ghost-catching scientists, however its success stemmed from more than just humor. People loved the quirky characters and the funny story.
A still from Ghostbusters (1984)
After the first movie, Ghostbusters became a cultural phenomenon, spawning sequels, animated series, video games, and tons of merchandise — becoming $959 million worth iconic franchise (via The Numbers). In its wake, however, not every addition to it has been a hit with fans.
2 Ghostbusters Sequels That Miss the Mark Despite Iconic Legacy
The Ghostbusters franchise is hard to live up to. Both Ghostbusters: Answer The Call and Ghostbusters II have their fans, but they couldn’t match the charm of the original movie.
The reboot had trouble finding the right balance of humor and scares, while the sequel didn’t bring anything new to the table. These movies show how...

The original Ghostbusters movie is still considered the best, launching a successful franchise for decades to come. Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, with an all-female cast, rebooted the franchise but didn't capture the essence of the original. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire expands the story with new elements, juggling nostalgia and new directions for the franchise.
The Ghostbusters franchise is still expanding, with each new movie release making it more extensive to rank the Ghostbusters movies from worst to best. The supernatural comedy series launched in 1984 under the creation of Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis, and Dan Aykroyd. The original Ghostbusters proved to not only be an excellent blockbuster, but it ignited widespread fandom for the ghost-hunting team, so much so that it could become a massive movie franchise for Hollywood to continue to develop. This was immediately seen with the development of Ghostbusters II, even if the franchise took a hiatus after.

This article contains mild spoilers for "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire."
When I was a kid, three major unifying interests defied gender at my school: Pokémon, Power Rangers, and anything related to the Ghostbusters. The line in the sand is often drawn between pink and blue, but when it came to these three areas, it was generally accepted that everyone loved these worlds. We traded Pokémon cards on the playground and huddled around the kid with the GameBoy during recess, friend groups delegated which color Power Ranger each person was, and hangouts where Super Soakers doubled as "proton packs" were what scorching hot summers were made of. This is to say I love all things "Ghostbusters," so everything I'm about to say moving forward is rooted in a deep adoration for the franchise and all of the people involved who helped bring this zany supernatural comedy about a ragtag group of eccentric...

Ghostbusters movies stretch credulity, but this is ridiculous.
At the start of Ghostbusters II, Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) perform for bored kids at a birthday party. It’s only been five years since they blew up the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man in downtown New York and destroyed Gozer’s portal atop a city high rise. And yet, no one remembers the work the boys did to save the city.
In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Ghostbusters are completely unknown to Gen Z, even to the grandchildren of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), even to a kid so into podcasts that he calls himself Podcast. It’s only been 30 years since the team drove the Statue of Liberty down the center of the city.
Even in this age of fake news and disinformation, the public’s willingness to forget about the events of each previous Ghostbusters movie is a strange...
