It’s aliiiive! Netflix has released a first-look image at Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” and revealed that the film will be released in November.
The new photo shows Oscar Isaac, who portrays the titular mad scientist, holding a mysterious vial. In a prerecorded message during the streamer’s Next on Netflix event on Wednesday, writer and director del Toro introduced a selection of footage while showing off a “Frankenstein” room in his infamous L.A. “Bleak House.”
“This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for fifty years. I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with ‘Frankenstein,'” he said, earning laughs as he gestured to the hundreds of themed figurines in the room behind him. “And they probably would be right. Two works from the early queer literary canon will see audiobook release this June, narrated by actor Emile Hirsch.
Both were authored by Fritz Peters, an overlooked trailblazer in the 1950s who wrote frank and intimate depictions of homosexuality, spirituality and mental health struggles. The books are the novel “Finistère” and the memoir “Boyhood With Gurdjieff,” hitting audio platforms in time for global pride celebrations.
The recordings mark Hirsch’s first in the space, save voicing a character in “Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans,” the animated film from Guillermo del Toro. Known for films like “Into the Wild” and “Milk,” he will next appear in the holocaust film “‘Bau, Artist at War.”
Despite selling big in his time, Peters’ catalogue had fallen into relative obscurity compared to literati peers like Gore Vidal, Henry Miller and Eudora Welty. Production company Hirsch Giovanni acquired the author’s complete works two years ago and serve as re-release publishers.

Back in March 2023, the news broke that filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was in the midst of casting a new film version of "Frankenstein" that he was slated to write and direct. At the time, it was said that Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth were set to star and that Andrew Garfield was to play the Monster. According to actor Doug Jones (who has worked with del Toro on several feature films), the director had long been at work on a "Frankenstein" movie that was meant to visually resemble Bernie Wrightson's "Frankenstein," a heavily illustrated printing of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel made by Marvel Comics back in 1983. At the time of Jones' comments, however, he was slated to play the Monster himself, as the actor commented on what "my look" would have been. That Wrightson-inspired version eventually evolved into the version mentioned above, which is being produced for Netflix.

Paul Walter Hauser as Dark and Jacob Tremblay as Orion – DreamWorks Animation © 2023
We’re just weeks away from getting to watch the brand new DreamWorks Animation movie that features a script written by Charlie Kauffman. In anticipation of its release, Netflix has confirmed the full cast lineup for Orion and the Dark plus released a new trailer and stills.
Announced last year at the Annecy Film Festival, this will mark DreamWorks Animation’s second major Netflix Original movie for the streamer following Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans from Guillermo del Toro.
Based on the book by Emma Yarlett, the movie comes from director Sean Charmatz and is about a young elementary school kid who is afraid of everything, including bees, the ocean, clowns, and countless other things. Amongst the biggest things he’s afraid of is the dark, which comes alive and whisks Orion away on an adventure.

Netflix is bringing Frankenstein to the popular streaming service.
Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro will adapt Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) and Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front) join Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth in Frankenstein. Lars Mikkelsen (The Witcher), David Bradley (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio) and Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth) also join the ensemble.
Frankenstein continues Netflix’s partnership with del Toro, including the Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature Film, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, and the animated films Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans and Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia.

Netflix offers a wide variety of animated movies that compete well with theatrical releases, featuring collaborations with major filmmakers and studios. Some notable animated movies on Netflix include "America: The Motion Picture," "Arlo The Alligator Boy," and "Back To The Outback," each with unique styles and mixed audience reviews. Netflix has also produced critically acclaimed animated series and movies, such as "The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf," "Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans," and "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio."
The best Netflix animated movies compete well with the latest movies hitting theaters. There are animated movies for kids and adults alike on Netflix that are just as good, and sometimes better, than movies from DreamWorks, Disney, and even Pixar Animation. Netflix offers plenty of animated movies from major studios to keep its subscribers entertained with familiar tales, but there are also a lot of animated movies that are exclusive to the streaming giant.

Director Guillermo del Toro has some thoughts on creating a brighter future for animation in Hollywood.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, del Toro spoke at this year's Annecy International Animated Film Festival, where he championed the rise of "rule-breaking" animated films like Sony's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and their importance in modern Hollywood. "The three hits of Spider-Verse, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Mario are moving things, allowing a little more latitude, but there are still big fights to be had," the Pinocchio filmmaker said, warning, "Animation to me is the purest form of art, and it’s been kidnapped by a bunch of hoodlums. We have to rescue it. [And] I think that we can Trojan-horse a lot of good shit into the animation world."

In a week that saw three theatrical releases debut on Premium VOD, “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate/$19.99) won the battle. The ensemble action comedy sequel took first place on all four charts we follow, despite competition from “The Forever Purge” (Universal/$19.99) and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” (Warner Bros./$19.99).
Meanwhile, “Black Widow” (Disney/$29.99) announced an all-digital platform release for August 10. The unusual aspect is it will be offered as a digital download rather than a rental, with extras including additional scenes and bloopers.
More significantly, “Hitman’s” displaced “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount/$19.99) after just one week as top film. That’s a bit of a surprise; John Krasinski’s hit grossed as much as “Purge,” Conjuring,” and “Hitman’s” combined, and “Hitman’s” grossed the least with $37 million.
That also may mean that the “Hitman’s” audience wasn’t as thoroughly tapped. The audience demo...

How much of the journey is worth it when you’re scratching your head at the destination? That’s the question one must confront in Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.
Originating from the book series created by del Toro and Daniel Kaus, 2016 series Trollhunters kicked off Tales of Arcadia as part of Netflix’s quest to produce original animation for children. You don’t go into Trollhunters and its two series successors, 3Below and Wizards, expecting form-breaking storytelling for Western children’s cartoons, but each series had plenty to offer: Del Toro’s colorful realms with their own mythology, slapstick one-liners in the midst of swordplay, and colorful creatures from lovable Aaarrrgghh (Fred Tatasciore) to the paternal Blinky (Kelsey Grammar) with his teacher bravado.

It's vampires on a plane in the first trailer for Netflix's upcoming suspense movie, Blood Red Sky, which finds a woman with a mysterious illness who must fight to protect her son when terrorists take over her plane. Of course, because this is a high-concept horror movie, the illness can only be vampirism of zombie-infection, thankfully (?) it's the former, with the woman unleashing the inner monster she has fought to hide.
The deliciously high concept behind Blood Red Sky should help take cinematic vampires to dizzying new heights, with the vampire on a plane no doubt causing all manner of bloodshed and chaos at 30,000 feet. The claustrophobia of the cabin is presented well in the footage, as we feel the walls closing in on the kidnapped passengers. Of course, this will take a violent turn of a different nature when the vampire is released, quickly turning the terrorists from predators into prey.

"We're facing the end of the world..." "So what do we do?" Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for the animated movie Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, a full-length feature film continuing the popular animated series "Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia". In 2016, Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro first announced his plans with DreamWorks to produce the animated series “Trollhunters” in a presentation at the Annecy Animation Festival. Now, five years later, he returns – although virtually – to discuss the franchise’s feature film finale “Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans,” and share a trailer ahead of its July 21 Netflix premiere.
In a pre-recorded Dreamworks Studio Focus presentation posted on Tuesday morning, Del Toro was joined by producer Chad Hammes and directors Francisco Ruiz Velasco, Johane Matte and Andrew L. Schmidt for a nearly hour-long discussion about the history of the “Tales of Arcadia” franchise and its Netflix-bound feature film conclusion.
Hammes kicked off the talk by asking Del Toro how he felt closing the five-year circle at this year’s Annecy.
“It’s a relief,” he admitted before casting his memory back to the 2016 announcement. “It was great because we were going to...

DreamWorks Animation comes to the Annecy Animation Festival again on a wave of success: last spring, despite the pandemic and theater closures, “Trolls World Tour” hit a limited number of venues but really hit big on-demand, while “Croods: A New Age” reaped pent-up demand at theaters in the fall and winter as venues opened around the world. Its TV animation unit boasts buzzy hits such as “Trollhunters,” “Tales of Arcadia: Wizards” and “3Below: Tales of Arcadia” from Guillermo del Toro, “Voltron Legendary Defender,” “She-Ra,” “Spirit Riding Free” as well as spinoffs from “Madagascar,” “Fast and Furious,” “Kung Fu Panda” and ‘How to Train Your Dragon.”
This year at Annecy, DreamWorks is showcasing “Spirit Untamed,” “The Boss Baby: Family Business” and “Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.” All works will be the focus of panels at Annecy, with del Toro leading the “Titans.”

Never short on fresh content, Netflix regularly release original films either co-produced or fully made by themselves, and 2021 isn’t looking any different. We’re already getting a fairly good idea of what’s on the streamer’s list for next year, which will see the company reportedly commit to a new movie every few weeks, and at least six animated titles. What, then, can we look forward to from Netflix in 2021?
Well, highlights include the animated comedy America: The Motion Picture, which focuses on George Washington, and Richard Linklater’s 1969-set Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Adventure. Elsewhere, Zack Snyder, who also has his cut of Justice League coming to HBO Max, is helming Army of the Dead for streaming, while Andrew Dominik is working on Blonde, a Marilyn Monroe biopic with Ana de Armas. Another big name project, Bruised, comes from Halle Berry, who directs and stars as an Mma fighter.
