‘Mother of Flies’ Becomes First U.S. Feature to Win the Top Prize at Fantasia Film Festival
Image
“Mother of Flies,” a small independent film from Fantasia regulars the Adams family, has won the jury-selected Cheval Noir award for best film at the 29th Fantasia Film Festival.

Acquired by Shudder in advance of the festival, “Mother of Flies” is written and directed by John Adams, Zelda Adams, and Toby Posner and also stars the family trio, as well as daughter Lulu Adams. One of the buzziest films at the festival, it is also the first U.S. film to win Fantasia’s coveted Cheval Noir for Best Film.

In the Cheval Noir jury statement, jury president Pascal Plante wrote, “This might not be the film with the most means or the flashiest camerawork, but it’s a film that, in a meta way, reminds us why we even bother to make films in the first place. [It’s] an earnest film; a true indie that feels authentic, vital, and impeccably crafted.

Watson season 1, episode 8 preview: A case of Munchausen by Proxy?
Image
Ingrid suggests that a child may not really be sick in Watson season 1, episode 8. At least, not by natural causes.

You’ve heard of the term Munchausen by Proxy. It’s a condition that comes up in a lot of TV shows like this, and it has roots in real life. In fact, Gypsey Rose Blanchard is one of the most famous victims of Munchausen by Proxy, and there have been many shows and movies made about her.

Now it’s time for Watson to focus on this condition. Is it something as “simple” as this, though?

The team get to the bottom of bouts of staring in Watson season 1, episode 8

It all starts when a young boy, who is sure to remind Watson of his dear friend Sherlock Holmes — if the character is as we would expect based on the source material — comes into the clinic for help. His mom has brought him in,...

Beyond the city streets lie mysterious pocket worlds harboring untold treasures and terrors. New Eridu’s intrepid “Hollow Raiders” seek fortune in these shattered landscapes known as Hollows, guided from afar by gifted hackers called Proxies. You play as a proxy named Belle or Wise, helping Raiders plumb the depths of such places from the safety of your video shop.

Using cybernetically linked drones called Bangboos, you see through a Raider’s eyes and assist their exposure. Each hollow presents a different maze of ruined cityscapes styled as flickering television screens. Solving puzzles and skirmishing foes alike, Raiders advance towards objectives while you watch for dangers. Combat sees Raider trios starring flashy attacks, clever uses of elemental powers, and well-timed teamwork.

Though hollow diving grows riskier over time, rewards make the risk worthwhile. Various missions task Raiders with scavenging loot, battling monsters, or unraveling mysteries. Currencies let Proxy and Raider alike upgrade gear,...

Proxy Mom: My Experience with Portpartum Depression by Sophie Adriansen & Mathou
Image
Babies are hard. I think everyone knows that intellectually, but maybe not emotionally. My own first child was a needy, demanding, unhappy baby – I don’t want to claim too much; this was a quarter-century ago, and I wasn’t the main caregiver, either – so I have some insight but nothing like expertise.

The mother in Proxy Mom: My Experience with Postpartum Depression has a fairly typical, average baby: no more needy than most, no specific problems, nothing out of the ordinary. Just crying every hour or few hours, all day every day, needing something that’s often not clear. Just an ordinarily demanding, life-altering baby, on top of everything the pregnancy and birth already did to her body.

This graphic novel is loosely a memoir – writer Sophie Adriansen and artist Mathou both lived through versions of this story, the same year, each having a first baby with a man who already had older children.

Michelle Monaghan and Director Sophia Banks Team Up for Indie Action-Thriller ‘Black Site’: ‘Let’s Show Them What Two Women Can Do in This Space’
Image
“Black Site” director Sophia Banks is hoping her new 10 million action thriller “Black Site” is the little movie that could.

“We’re not trying to be an 80 million action movie but we want to make this genre accessible for people,” Banks tells me. “It Ok to shoot an indie action movie. As long as you take people on a good ride, then that’s all we want. We just want people to have fun and go on a journey.”

In “Black Site,” Michelle Monaghan stars as Abby Trent, a CIA agent based at a top-secret black site who must hunt one of their most notorious detainees (Jason Clarke) after he escapes from his cell and goes on a killing spree.

I recently caught up with Banks and Monaghan over Zoom.

How did it all come about?

Banks: I did a couple of shorts. One premiered at Tribeca called “Proxy” that got sold to Anonymous Content.
