The HBO adaptation wrapped its four-season run up this week, but there’s plenty of other shows to watch next.

Six years, four seasons, and four novels later, HBO’s “My Brilliant Friend,” its adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan series, has come to its bittersweet end. The sprawling story follows lifelong friends Elena and Lila (played by eight actors collectively across the four-season run) throughout their 60-plus-year friendship as the elderly Elena recounts their lives together when Lila disappears.

Tackling female friendship and intimacy, class, gender, work, love, motherhood, and political clashes, “My Brilliant Friend” has been in a league of its own since its 2018 debut. The fourth and final season of HBO’s sumptuous 20th-century saga “My Brilliant Friend” brings us back to Naples one more time. Ed Westwick (“Gossip Girl”), John Hannah (“The Mummy”) and British newcomer Alanah Bloor are set to join Turkish lead Can Yaman in “Sandokan,” Lux Vide’s reboot of the cult Italian TV series about the adventures of its titular pirate who, with his motley crew, fights against colonial powers in Southeast Asia.

Shooting is set to start April 22 outside Rome on this high-end reboot of Italian writer Emilio Salgari’s exotic epic. The original “Sandokan,” directed in 1976 by Sergio Sollima, catapulted Indian actor Kabir Bedi to Bollywood stardom, having sold to more than 85 countries around the world.

Fremantle-owned Lux Vide’s new spin on the storied “Sandokan” IP is based on an idea by Lux Vide CEO Luca Bernabei developed for TV by Alessandro Sermoneta (“Devils”); Scott Rosenbaum (“The Shield”); Davide Lantieri (“Monterossi”) and directed by Jan Maria Michelini (“Devils”) and Nicola Abbatangelo (“Doc”).

Fremantle, which is among companies producing “Maria,” also confirmed on Thursday that the film’s additional cast comprises Italian A-listers Alba Rohrwacher and Pierfrancesco Favino and Oscar-nominated Australian actor Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”), all in unspecified roles.

Penélope Cruz is taking on an Elena Ferrante adaptation.

IndieWire can confirm the “Ferrari” actress is reuniting with “Elegy” director Isabel Coixet for the adaptation of Ferrante’s 2002 “The Days of Abandonment,” which followed Olga, an Italian woman, who loses her grasp on reality after her husband of 15 years abruptly leaves her for another woman.

The big screen adaptation will instead be set in America, as Variety reported, with the script penned by Laurence Coriat (“Summer in Genoa”). “The Days of Abandonment” will be produced by Lotus, a unit of Raffaella and Andrea Leone’s Leone Film Group, and Cruz’s production banner Moonlyon. Cruz’s brother Edu Cruz will also produce along with Marco Perego through their Nimoa Entertainment company.

Director Coixet has recently helmed “Un Amor,” “My Life Without Me,” and “The Secret Life of Words.”

That ’70s Show sequel That ’90s Show, Kenya Barris’ feature directorial debut You People and Pamela Anderson documentary Pamela, a Love Story are some of the much-anticipated projects coming to Netflix this month.

Hitting Netflix on Jan. 19, That ’90s Show focuses on the teenage daughter of Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon), who is spending the summer of 1995 with her grandparents, Red and Kitty (Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp). Soon the Forman home fills up with a group of new friends. Grace, Prepon and fellow That ’70s Show stars Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Wilmer Valderrama are all set to make guest appearances in the sequel series.

New Year’s Day marks the launch of the new original limited series “Kaleidoscope,” with episodes presented to subscribers in random order leading up to the big finale. The show chronicles the events before, during and after a major heist, with Giancarlo Esposito leading the cast, and is designed to be watched (and enjoyed) in any order.

Another high-profile Netflix original in January is “You People,” a new comedy film co-written by Jonah Hill and Kenya Barris, with Hill starring opposite Eddie Murphy in a premise that evokes “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” as he vies for the approval of his girlfriend’s father so he can marry her. A series that, deep down (and on the surface), is pure sensitivity and introspection. It is a sincere look at adolescence that if you are not interested in that phase of life or uninterested in personal growth, the series might strike you as a twee bit boring. However, if you pay attention you will see that the filmmaker has managed a magnificent portrayal of the characters, and a good cinematic construction.

2022 represented Netflix’s 25th (!!) year of operations as a company. Unfortunately, the streamer celebrated its 25th birthday with some earnings losses, massive cancelations, and a whole host of bad press. What will year 26 hold for the little Blockbuster killer that could? We now have a good idea thanks to Netflix’s list of new releases for January 2023.

Netflix is kicking off 2023 with some muscular original series…and in one instance we mean literally muscular. Vikings: Valhalla season 2 will premiere on Jan. 13, bringing some much needed Norse mayhem back to television. Other titles of note include Ginny & Georgia season 2 (Jan. 5), and That ’90s Show (Jan. 19). The most intriguing option, however, might be what Netflix is choosing to open its year with. Netflix Canada has revealed its entire slate of new titles dropping on the streaming service in January 2023, from sitcoms, to dramas, to reality, movies and more.

Among the most anticipated new titles is Netflix’s reboot “That ’90s Show”, which reunites many of the original “That ’70s Show” cast members, including Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Wilmer Valderrama, Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith

Other big shows include “Ginny & Georgia” season 2, the Christian Bale-starring thriller “The Pale Blue Eye”, the reality series “Bling Empire: New York” and more.

December saw the last big releases of 2022, such as the drama movie Lady Chatterley’s Lover, the stop-motion animated movie Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the documentary series Harry & Meghan, Alejandro G.
