There is nothing that excites me more than seeing Jonathan Frakes. Yes, that’s Riker from Star Trek: Next Gen, but it’s also Jonathan Frakes from Beyond Belief. My best friend and I used to sit in bed and watch Beyond Belief while eating Chicken Biscuits with squeeze cheese. We were slightly obsessed. Not with just the show and Jonathan Frakes, but also with narrator Don Lafontaine and the research work of author Robert Tralins. This was our A-Team.

As of now, I think my love for Guillermo Del Toro as a filmmaker is well established. I adore the man and his work. He plays in my favorite sandboxes, with monsters, vampires, kaiju, giant robots, and in the gothic world whenever he feels like it. The man is after my heart with every single movie he makes. In 2015, he went ahead and asked himself, what does this girl love that she hasn’t gotten a whole lot of lately? And he answered with a gothic love story with ghosts in a Hammer-esque setting in a mansion with walls that bleed and memories imbedded in its construction. So, if you didn’t guess from all that, this...

You never knew exactly what you would get when "The Twilight Zone" began. The series — produced and largely written by celebrated Emmy-winning writer Rod Serling — was a loose collection of fantastical tales. Some were supernatural, some were science fiction. Some were comedies, and some were scary as hell.
It should come as little surprise that the "scary as hell" episodes are among the most memorable installments of the series. William Shatner's desperate screaming that there's a man on the wing of the plane in "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" was instantly iconic, and repeatedly remade. Agnes Moorehead silently fighting off an invading force of tiny homicidal aliens in "The Invaders" was strange and shocking, and seemingly set the stage for future "tiny monster" horror movies like "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" and "Gremlins."
But perhaps no "Twilight Zone" episode is more overwhelmingly terrifying than the one about a little kid with godlike powers.

If there was ever a match made in heaven, it was Guillermo del Toro and Disney's "The Haunted Mansion." Del Toro is a monster kid through and through. His fascination with the macabre has deep literary and cinematic roots, to be sure. He can break down the gothic artistry of Mary Shelley's writing or grapple with the problematic side of H.P. Lovecraft with as much intelligence and passion as the most respected college professor.
But del Toro's passion for genre goes way beyond the intellectual. It's his whole heart, which you can see in everything he's ever produced. He has a childlike love of ghosts and monsters and anything spooky, so of course he was the right person for Disney to hire to try to make a real version of "The Haunted Mansion" back in 2010.
His particular adaptation had a long history of stops and starts before he eventually departed the project,...

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will be giving the 1981 fantasy film Dragonslayer a 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release on March 21st – and copies are already available for pre-order at This Link! The discs will include over an hour of new special features, as well as an audio commentary with Dragonslayer director Matthew Robbins (who wrote the screenplay with Hal Barwood) and Dragonslayer fan Guillermo del Toro.
Robbins and del Toro have worked together several times over the years, co-writing the screenplays for Mimic, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Crimson Peak, and Pinocchio.
Dragonslayer has the following synopsis: Set in sixth-century England, an ill-tempered, fire-breathing creature—ominously known as Vermithrax Pejorative—terrorizes its citizens until a young sorcerer’s apprentice named Galen (Peter MacNicol) is reluctantly tasked with confronting the beast. For Galen to succeed, it will take more than magic to defeat the dragon.

For a long time, Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio" seemed doomed to become one of his many, many unrealized projects. Announced in 2008, this new take on Carlo Collodi's novel "The Adventures of Pinocchio" was penned by del Toro and his frequent co-writer Matthew Robinson, with del Toro also splitting helming duties with "Fantastic Mr. Fox" animation director Mark Gustafson. But just as exciting as the film's top-tier creatives is its story, which shifts the classic tale of the titular wooden puppet and his quest to become human to Fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini's reign of terror.
A dark fairy tale about children going on fantastical adventures in times of war and violent social upheaval is familiar territory for del Toro. His 2001 horror film, "The Devil's Backbone" centers on an orphan boy who sets out to unravel the mystery behind a ghost that haunts the isolated orphanage where he resides,...

There’s a load of great content coming to Netflix in November, but just as is always the case, there are also a bunch of titles being removed from the streaming service at the same time. Next month, the platform is losing 53 movies and TV shows. There are some classics amongst them, too, unfortunately, so you might want to fit in a last minute rewatch before they vanish from Netflix’s library.
On the first day of November, four titles are being removed, including horror remake Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, children’s animated sequel Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil and Gerard Butler action movie Olympus Has Fallen. 2017 horror Death House is also leaving on the 4th, while drama Into the Forest departs Netflix on the 6th and Jamie Foxx vehicle Sleepless is among those disappearing the following day.
Here’s the full list of everything leaving in November:...

This July we will be hit with the continuing tales of Brahms Heelshire and his creepy doll in director William Brent Bell's upcoming sequel The Boy II starring Katie Holmes and Ralph Ineson. And today we have word that the movie will not be called merely The Boy 2 after all. During this week's CinemaCon, the powers that be behind the scenes of the teen horror follow-up have announced that the film will now be going by the official title Brahms: The Boy II. Not sure why the studio and or the filmmakers decided this was a better title than The Boy II or hell even The Boy Returns, but maybe the title change will make a bit more sense after we witness the final film this summer.
I can't help but be intrigued by this new film. Mostly because of how the original movie ended. And if I need...

Last week we were finally hit with the killer trailer for producer Guillermo del Toro and director André Øvredal's upcoming horror flick Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark based on the children's book series of the same name by Alvin Schwartz. The movie looks to be a terrifying journey into the world of the infamous short stories, and I'm not sure if Del Tor and company are aiming it towards kids, which is strange considering the filmmakers based the movie on a trio of kid's books. But if you were left wondering the same thing, no worries, as today we have word via Del Toro himself that the film aims to be a family-friendly-ish motion picture sporting a PG-13 rating.
Specifically, Guillermo del Toro says of director André Øvredal's adaptation of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark anticipated rating.

American Horror Story: Cult returns with another spine-tingling episode full of clowns and scares. It's been difficult to tell whether the clowns are real or not already. One minute, they seem like Ally's delusions, and the next, they're possibly real. Even Twisty isn't a certainty, especially considering he was in Freak Show.
This episode, titled "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," kicks off exactly where the season 7 premiere ended: Ally is in bed with the three-headed clown.

Deadpool took #1 at the weekend box office once again in its second weekend of release, crossing $235 million domestically. But it wasn't a weekend all about the Merc with the Mouth as a pair of newcomers in Risen and The Witch had strong opening performances. Additionally, Focus' Race finished its debut sprint with a sixth place finish and Sony saw an impressive limited opening for Stephen Chow's Chinese box office behemoth The Mermaid. In first, Deadpool brought in an estimated $55 million in its second weekend, a 58.5% drop from last weekend, which is well within expectation as films that open over $100 million tend to drop, on average, 54.3%. Deadpool, as it turns out, had a similar drop to the previous R-rated opening weekend champion, The Matrix Reloaded, which dropped 59.8% in its second weekend back in 2003. The film's drop, however, is much better than last year's Valentine's and President's Day weekend champ, Fifty Shades of Grey,...

What a great match of filmmaker and source material. Deadline reports that director Guillermo del Toro is "developing to potentially direct" the movie adaptation of the classic Alvin Schwartz book series Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark, a project that's been in the works at CBS Films for quite some time. John August (Big Fish, Go) wrote the screenplay, but there's no clear timetable for when this project will actually go into production since del Toro has so many options on his plate at the moment.
Stephen Gammell's illustrations from these books probably still occasionally haunt the dreams of people who read them when they were kids, and del Toro is such a big fan of the books that he reportedly owns ten of Gammell's original illustrations. It certainly seems like this project is in the right hands now. Del Toro will definitely be producing the film, but whether...

"There are parts of the house that are unsafe." Universal and Legendary have debuted a new, full-length theatrical trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak, his new haunted house horror-thriller featuring quite a tremendous cast lead by Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Charlie Hunnam and Tom Hiddleston. "There are parts of the house that are unsafe." We've been waiting patiently, and director Guillermo del Toro has finally delivered the teaser trailer for his latest horror project, Crimson Peak. In true teaser fashion, it doesn't show much, but it makes a bold claim that this is del Toro's ultimate masterpiece. It looks gorgeous and haunting, but there's clearly some visual effects that still need to be finished. Funny how memories work. For the longest time, when someone asked, "What got you into horror?" I'll always speak of the time I first sifted through the pages of Stephen King's "Cycle of the Werewolf" when it was first published in '83 and becoming mesmerized by Berni Wrightson's graphic, atmospheric werewolf attack illustrations. But my first brush with the macabre, and something rather grisly - I should add, came much earlier...in a goddamn Disney movie. Netflix dropped a ton of titles on Instant earlier this month and one of the films I was eager to add to my queue and jump into was 1981's Dragonslayer by Matthew Robbins, who not only directed The Legend of Billy Jean, another favorite of mine, and *batteries not included, but has become a frequent Guillermo del Toro collaborator (Mimic, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Crimson Peak) as well.

Dead Souls is definitely the perfect example of a movie in which each member of the audience takes away from it what they personally want based upon their individual worldview. I found it to be a warning against mixing the occult and Christianity together or using dark arts to gain your own desires. However, Writer Michael Laimo looks at it as a cautionary tale for those who embrace religious beliefs at face value without questioning them.
My interview with Laimo reminds me of one of my first writing jobs. I interviewed musicians about their new albums for a Christian rock magazine. Every issue featured an interview with a mainstream rock star about his personal religious beliefs. I don't share Laimo's views on Christianity, but respect where he's coming from and celebrate the fact that he even gives thought to spiritual and supernatural matters.

We all know, of course, what happened on April 15, 2013, in Boston, Massachusetts; as thousands of people ran a famous marathon through one of America's oldest and most historic cities, multiple explosions went off near the finish line. Many were killed or injured, and fundraisers have sprung up across the globe to help the community and the victims and their families. And one of the philanthropists lending a hand is one of horror's most beloved figures.
Adam Green, the director of Spiral and Frozen and the mastermind behind the popular slasher films in the Hatchet series, was born and raised in the Boston area in a small picturesque town called Holliston. Green, currently working on his own FearNet original sitcom, Holliston, and the upcoming Chris Columbus (of Goonies fame) film Killer Pizza, opted to plan a three-night fundraising extravaganza in his hometown area.
Green began posting details on his social media as details became available.
