Streaming has been a positive for many independent filmmakers who want exposure (especially for the horror genre), but there has always been a downside. The lack of physical release of these films has haunted the industry, something that is starting to be rectified. According to Variety, some Shudder horror films will get a proper release for some limited editions. The horror streaming service has joined Arrow Video to get their films to fans who may not have a Shudder subscription. Many titles slated for release include Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s early work in Nightwatch, the 2024 sequel, Nightwatch: Damons Are Forever, and the prolific Adams family’s inventive supernatural film, Hellbender. Other titles released are The Sadness, Deadstream, Speak No Evil, Huesera: The Bone Woman, and Perpetrator. Most of the films are getting US and UK releases except for Hellbender, which is only getting released in the United States.

The found footage horror movie subgenre saturated the film market after The Blair Witch Project was released in 1999. It might have taken a few years, but by the end of the 2000s, the monumental success of Paranormal Activity assured us that the subgenre wasn't going anywhere. Since then, we've gotten several found footage franchises, such as Rec, V/H/S, and Creep, as well as six more Paranormal Activity stories and a Blair Witch sequel. Although some argue the subgenre is stale and overused, there are still fresh releases that revive the style. And in 2022, we got the perfect example of this in Deadstream. The horror comedy manages to be interchangeably satirical and terrifying, filled with humor, jump scares, grotesque practical effects, and unpredictable twists.

2024 has undoubtedly emerged as a banner year for horror, with a slew of terrifying and compelling movies gracing the screens. From the blood-soaked vengeance of Oddity, where a woman uses haunted items to seek revenge after her twin’s brutal murder, to the chilling occult undertones of Longlegs, which follows an FBI agent on a serial killer’s twisted trail, this year has already delivered plenty of spine-chilling content. Smile 2 continues the franchise’s deep dive into the haunting horrors surrounding global pop sensation Skye Riley, and The Substance introduces a dark take on self-improvement gone wrong, as Elisabeth Sparkle is pushed to extremes to reclaim her life.
But despite the competition, there’s a new horror movies that’s emerged as a serious contender for the best of 2024—Late Night with the Devil. Currently streaming on Lionsgate, it’s quickly gaining attention, earning near-perfect critic scores, including an...

"Do you want us here?" Quiver Distribution has posted the trailer for an indie horror called Chateau, the second feature from filmmaker Luke Genton. This first premiered at the 2024 Popcorn Frights Film Festival this year and will be out on VOD to watch at home in December. "Vacation is all about escape." While on a French vacation funded by odd jobs, an aspiring influencer covertly films a vlog in a reportedly haunted chateau she's been hired to clean. This found footage horror follows two influencer idiots getting a real scare when they discover this chateau is actually, really haunted. Starring Cathy Marks and Coltron Tran as the main duo. This isn't a particularity original concept - there's also Deadstream which this film seems to be borrowing from, not to mention Rob Savage's Dashcam, and other horror that is about people going into a haunted house that they think isn't...

The first "V/H/S" movie was released in 2012, which was actually four full years before the last manufacturers of VCRs, Funai Electric, finally halted production on the medium.
VHS was, for those of a certain age, a seminal and ubiquitous technology. Prior to VHS, the only way to see certain cinematic classics was either to go to a repertory theater (which used to be far more common) and see it on the big screen (requiring a well-curated arthouse in your town) or to wait for something to broadcast on network TV (which was often edited for content or time). With the advent of VHS, movies were on-demand for the first time. One could rent their movies from a local video store and watch them at their leisure. Mind Body Spirit, the feature horror debut by filmmakers Alex Henes and Matthew Merenda, is not the first film this year to feel like its tapping into similar things as Ari Asters Hereditary. However, it is the only one thus far to involve so much yoga alongside its story about familial trauma and how it gets passed down. This could easily sound like a joke, but Mind Body Spirit is a found footage horror that plays things mostly straight beyond a few gags about influencers. This is both a blessing and a curse. The curse is that it never takes things quite far enough to be as sly a reflection of our modern digital lives as something like the recent The Influencer. Instead, its blessings come in the more supernatural dark delights, operating in the vein of something like Rob Savages Host with a slight hint of the livestream horror Deadstream.

Exclusive: After six years as a manager at More/Medavoy, Stephen Belden is going it alone, having launched his own management and production company, Death Wish Entertainment.
“The dream,” Belden said, “has always been to work with a core group of clients that I absolutely adore as artists and as human beings and to be able to produce projects with and for those clients. With this company I get to focus on exactly that and I couldn’t be more excited.”
Belden explained that the name Death Wish is “a tongue-in-cheek nod to the fact that it’s harder than ever to be working in the entertainment industry right now,” underscoring at the same time that he “couldn’t be more optimistic about what the future holds for the up and coming generation of actors, writers, directors, and producers that I work with.”
Additionally, he expressed his gratitude to those at his former company.

As Screenlife storytelling transitions into the livestream era, movies like Michelle Iannantuono’s Livescreamers have me most excited. Early Screenlife films like Unfriended and The Den read like one-takers but are computer-set events like someone recorded their computer monitor or laptop screen. What Livescreamers offers — or examples like Spree, Deadstream, and #chadgetstheaxe — is the propulsive energy of a continuous stream devolving into chaos. Creators who put on celebrity identities face dreadful realities, not the protective online bubbles they’ve built where their antics draw millions of views. Livescreamers cherrypicks elements of Stay Alive, House on Haunted Hill, Unfriended, and cringy video game playthrough streams to create something horrifying that both sells its chills and comments on the vulnerable current state of livestream culture.
Low-budget restraints might hold back specific effects, and the film’s narrative throughline is a little wonky in spots, but what Iannantuono accomplishes comes from a place of authenticity.

Late Night with the Devil is the most fun that I have had with a horror film in a hot minute. It really finds that space in the Venn diagram that encompasses popcorn horror, clever writing, and an innovative story. I love discovering movies like this. I would file Deadstream, The House of the Devil and Saint Maud on the same shelf. Not because they are similar in premise or tone, but more because of the experience I had watching them. It’s so fun to go into an indie horror film and discover something new. A story that hasn’t been told that isn’t part of a bigger franchise. I love higher budget, more mainstream horror, but it’s films like this that give us more of an opportunity to experience something unexpected. I love that.

Haunted Ulster Live is part homage to, and part parody of the BBC’s infamous Ghostwatch. For those unfamiliar with it, it was a 1992 Halloween special hosted by Michael Parkinson and presented as a live broadcast from a haunted house. Unfortunately, many viewers didn’t know it wasn’t the real thing and the BBC ended up fielding over 1,000,000 from concerned viewers. So, you watched Evil Dead Rise, and now your appetite is wet for some more juicy horror. Two new horror movies were released in February and March that are the most extreme horror movies so far this year, and which deliver the jump scares and psychological terror you have been missing in horror. Those two movies are The Outwaters and Malum. They create a no-holds-barred, blood-soaked, surreal double feature for your Friday night. It is the surrealism that allows them to display the bizarre and to keep the audience on edge, wondering what is happening. Both films are leaving sanity behind, and exploring creatures, dreams, and other dimensions that a realistic, grounded horror cannot travel to.
The last three years, we have seen a return of horror. Perhaps the low budgets and high rewards ratio are to thank or the uncertainty of big-budget franchise movies to deliver box office with increasingly unimpressive CGI,...

"As long as it gets lots of views, right?" Screambox has revealed their own official trailer for a Czech horror comedy cult favorite called Shoky & Morthy: Last Big Thing, made by a Czech filmmaker named Andy Fehu. After first premiering in Czechia at the 2021 Karlovy Vary Film Festival, it's finally getting released in the US - streaming on Bloody Disgusting's Screambox service. It's out now if you want to watch. Shoky and Morthy are best friends and successful YouTubers, but their fame is slowly beginning to fade. While Morthy would like to quit, Shoky comes up with ideas for making their videos more interesting - and bloodier. In the end, they set out for one "last big thing" that will save their channel and their disintegrating friendship. They're ready for a comeback with a bloody supernatural spectacular live from a haunted ruin. This reminds me of the other indie horror hit Deadstream,...

It’s been said to death at this point, but it’s a great time to be a horror fan. There are so many franchises making killer comebacks alongside original terrors that have been making audiences sleep with a nightlight. When it comes to original horror films there has been no streaming service better than Shudder and now one of its biggest hits of 2022, Deadstream, is coming to Blu-ray.

Would it be wrong to suggest that live streamers are starting to overtake traditional media? They've been the subject of brand deals, boxing matches, guest appearances, and even outside their penetration into other forms of media, their devoted audiences can't seem to get enough of these internet personalities. In fact, some would argue that the kind of parasocial relationships formed as a result of this intense attachment may even be inherently harmful. But, an upcoming psycho-sexual thriller from Quiver will focus on the opposite end of how live-streaming impacts others and how the pursuit of views may ultimately lead to one's demise.
Follow Her is one of multiple tense films focusing on internet personalities, but whereas others see them entering haunted houses or taking on dangerously stupid challenges, this tense thriller will do something particularly unique. Tackling the topic of ethics in live-streaming, a live streamer working under false pretenses...

Horror’s technological evolution into Screenlife nightmares like Spree or Deadstream continues with Travis Bible’s #chadgetstheaxe, the latest skewer-happy examination of dangerous social media obsessions. It’s becoming a more challenging subgenre that requires intense authenticity in performances and digital details, especially since actual YouTubers are starting to become parodies of themselves. Bible and co-writer Kemerton Hargrove key into Logan Paul or Shane Dawson-type online personalities and their willingness to — for example — monetize videos that feature actual dead bodies. The attraction of infinite adoration from fanbases is too much for some to ignore, and #chadgetstheaxe is a fun-filled, sneaky-creepy reminder that sometimes internet superstardom isn’t worth the likes or attention.
The film starts by centering on “#Spicy” Steve (Michael Bonini), a likable-enough vlogger who teams up with mega-popular prankster Chad Ryan (Spencer Harrison Levin) for the ultimate video. Steve wants to prove he’s not a coward...

Found footage is So hard to get right. For every Blair Witch Project we get a myriad of direct-to-dvd (or streaming) shaky-cam horrors that substitute actual filmmaking and crafting real scares for cheap camerawork and a multitude of jump scares. However, in recent years there have been some standouts… Death of a Vlogger, Host, and most recently Deadstream. And now comes #chadgetstheaxe.
The film sees social media influencers Spicy Steve and Chad team up with a pair of beauty tip streamers to visit the supposedly haunted Devil’s Manor, the former home to a Satanic Cult. Things don’t go well. Soon they’re forced to wonder if it’s all a prank created by other streamers, by each other, or if there is something more sinister at hand… And as the violence ramps up…...

When you're unfortunate enough to love found footage horror movies, you find yourself sorting through a lot of garbage. You trawl through the depths of the Prime Video horror section, desperately searching for that one hidden gem, the movie that will restore your faith in the format, the movie that captures the unsettling reality of "The Blair Witch Project" or the slow-burn terror of "Paranormal Activity."
But because found footage horror — movies shot to look like they are existing "real" documents — can be produced with a couple bucks and some nearby woods, the ratio of good-to-bad is skewed, to put it mildly. If you're like me and love the inherent promise of the format so much that you're willing to wade through mountains of garbage to find the occasional diamond, it starts to become downright masochistic after awhile.
But then a movie like "Late Night With the Devil" rolls around and reminds you: oh yeah,...

The Fangoria Chainsaw Awards are back here in 2023, with Fangoria officially announcing the nominees and beginning the voting process this week. Unlike the Oscars, the Chainsaw Awards are voted on entirely by the fans, and now is your chance to let your voice be heard.
Fangoria previews, “This past year in horror has been an absolute feast of frights, and we are so excited to celebrate outstanding achievements in horror film and television with our 2023 Chainsaw Award nominations.”
“We shouldn’t be surprised at the lack of love horror received from mainstream awards this year, but 2022 was an embarrassment of riches for the horror fan, and to see none of it nominated by the bigger institutions was a bit of a shock. As ever, Fangoria is happy to pick up the slack,” Editor-in-Chief Phil Nobile Jr. said in a statement.

On Friday, Fangoria and Fangoria Studios released their 2023 Chainsaw Award nominations, which recognize outstanding achievements in horror film and television. First established in 1992, the Chainsaw Awards honor works and artists in a genre frequently overlooked by traditional organizations and critics groups. Past recipients include Wes Craven, George A. Romero, Lupita Nyong’o, Anthony Hopkins and Elisabeth Moss.
“Nope,” Jordan Peele’s follow-up to “Us,” received the most nominations of any film in Chainsaw Award contention, with 10 nominations including best wide release movie and best director. Other nominees include “Barbarian,” “Pearl,” “Hellraiser,” “Chucky” and “Yellowjackets.” Fangoria also introduced two new categories this year: Best Short and Best Cinematography.
Founded in 1979, Fangoria has become one of the most influential horror brands in the genre, living up to its moniker as “First in Fright.” At one time the only place on newsstands where fans could read about the world of contemporary horror, Fangoria...

While the concept of time seems more and more like a candy bar that I left in the car that eventually warps and melts into everything, there were still a lot of amazing horror movies, TV series, and experiences in 2022, and somehow I found the time to enjoy quite a lot of them. From two excellent film festivals to many amazing movie screenings to experiences that I’ll cherish in my horror-loving heart for the rest of my life, here are my reflections on some of my favorites of 2022:
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: It’s amazing to think that that we had a year when we got a new installment in the Hellraiser, Halloween, and Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchises, and it all started with this latest chapter in Leatherface’s saga. While I don’t gel with everything that happens in this film, I can’t deny that it...

"Deadstream" is one of the best horror movies of 2022, one that gives the found footage genre a refreshing facelift — a Screenlife movie that feels purposeful. Directors Joseph and Vanessa Winter crafted a delightfully inventive, hilarious, spooky film that captures the essence of what Sam Raimi accomplished with "Evil Dead" but updated for modern times. As Matt Donato wrote in our review of "Deadstream," this is a "goofball, gross-out, grim-but-gleeful crowd pleaser."
The film follows man-baby buffoon Shawn Ruddy, a disgraced YouTuber trying to make a comeback by livestreaming his overnight stay at a haunted house — before realizing there may be actual ghosts in the house, which he upsets by being an insufferable idiot.
The film has a fantastic and painfully accurate portrayal of social media and the streamer landscape, from the way it mocks the fake apology videos of canceled YouTubers, to the dumb stunt videos and insufferable yet endlessly watchable personalities.

Happy New Year everyone, and welcome to my faves of ‘22. It’s become redundant to say “it was another great year” but goddammit I can’t lie: 2022 was loaded with quality horror, up and down the line, across all media.
This means as with every recent year, I have missed several releases – a few of the big ones, and several smaller yet intriguing entries. My frequent bouts of absenteeism this time around weren’t because of any bouts of laziness or writer’s malaise, but rather due to working on my first book, A Cut Below: A Celebration Of B Horror Movies, 1950s - 1980s, coming this year from McFarland Publishing! Twelve film festivals each housing essays on five films with a common theme. I can hardly wait to share it with the world. End of plug!

2022: pretty rough year for humanity, pretty darn good year for film! I've yet to meet anyone who could survey the past 12 months and honestly claim they became better off because of them, but I have seen with my own two eyes that the movies were great. And maybe it was because the news headlines were bleak day-in and day-out, but I was pleasantly surprised that many of those great movies were pieces of pure entertainment, wide releases from major filmmakers that didn't just meet expectations, but surpassed them with grace and top-notch craft. When I sat down to assemble my top 10 list of 2022, I did not expect it to be so full of crowd-pleasing blockbusters, but anything else would've been a dishonest list. These were the movies I needed in 2022, and I'm glad they came into my life.
And before you ask: "Elvis," "Babylon," "Bones and All," and "Decision to Leave...

Happy New Year, Daily Dead readers! Today, I'm kicking off our annual "Favorites" series with my 2022 picks and you'll see favorites from other Daily Dead team members throughout the week. On this week's episode of Corpse Club, we'll also be discussing 2022 favorites and what we're looking forward to in the new year. Our favorites are a little different from a traditional "Best Of" list and our lists can include anything from movies and streaming shows to collectibles and events. In short, we’re sharing with you a list of our favorite horror experiences from 2022.
This year was interesting for me in that I truly felt I hit that tipping point where more was being released than I could possibly keep up on. If you stick to just watching movies, it's not impossible to check out every horror release, but when you add TV series, video games, and graphic novels, it becomes challenging.

Every year around this time, millions express their desire to start anew. They set lofty goals and steel themselves with an unbreakable resolve to lose those stubborn extra pounds, break that bad habit, or learn that new skill. The determination to better themselves is unshakable. And then after a few weeks, most give up.
Well, never fear! I am here to help save you some time and effort with some horror films that will give you the best excuses to just forgo the New Year’s resolutions this year and live happily without the guilt of knowing you didn’t follow through. This year has been frightfully good for horror. As the box office recovers, 2022 continued to make it clear that the thing audiences are guaranteed to show up for, outside of Marvel movies, is horror movies. Some of the year’s biggest success stories, hottest new directors, and studio overhauls emerged from the horror business. From revitalized franchises (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Scream and Hellraiser), originals (Men, Deadstream and The Menu), adaptations (The Black Phone, Bones and All) new takes on classic monsters (The Cursed, The Invitation) contemporary culture commentaries from more emerging voices in the genre (Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Nanny, Umma and Watcher) and star-led vehicles like Beast and Day Shift, there was truly something for every horror fan. And even Marvel got in the game with Werewolf by Night.

It's not very often that a movie director will recommend their favorite movies, but Scott Derrickson did just that. The director of the successful horror movie The Black Phone has given fans of the horror genre his top five picks for viewers to watch during the Halloween season and beyond.
Halloween 2022 may have recently passed, but that doesn't mean the horror fest has to end. This year has seen plenty of good horror movies, and the site Rotten Tomatoes has some great recommendations to add to the list given by Derrickson.
Piggy - 90
Bullying affects millions of people worldwide every day, and unfortunately, there are plenty of times when the act will go unpunished. The movie Piggy not only depicts violent bullying but shows the bullies receiving a brutal punishment.

The Cameras From The Horror-Comedy Deadstream Are Still Streaming, And You Can Watch Them Right Here
Warning: this article contains spoilers for "Deadstream."
Joseph and Vanessa Winter's "Deadstream" is a current front-runner for one of the best horror releases of 2022, boasting a perfect blend of horror, comedy, and found-footage elements as well as one of the scariest scenes of the year. The low-budget fan favorite centers on a disgraced YouTuber named Shawn Ruddy (Joseph Winter) who tries to redeem his soiled reputation by hosting a livestream in a haunted house and breaking every possible horror movie rule in an attempt to keep his sponsors happy, and his audience from clicking away.
Utilizing the new technology that's become standard for streamers, Ruddy installs 13 different cameras around the haunted house, including head-strap cameras to show his own Pov and a camera tied onto a spear to give the most Sam Raimi-esque camera movement possible. If the story of "Deadstream" is to be believed, Shawn Ruddy's cameras should theoretically still be rolling,...

During the 31 days of Halloween, Shudder has a spooky lineup of frights for any horror fan and we recommend two movies for these chilly October nights.
Following the success of last year’s hit V/H/S/94 comes this year’s V/H/S/99.
V/H/S/99, which debuted at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, premiered on Shudder on Thursday, October 20. The film features five new stories from filmmakers Maggie Levin (Into The Dark: My Valentine), Johannes Roberts, Flying Lotus (Kuso), Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls) and Joseph & Vanessa Winter (Deadstream).
V/H/S/99 harkens back to the final punk rock analog days of VHS, while taking one giant leap forward into the hellish new millennium.

V/H/S/94 debuted to rave reviews from film critics, with The New York Times calling the film “a grisly, gory gem,” and a 90 certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. V/H/S/94 was the biggest movie premiere in Shudder history, setting a...
