The Last Rites of Ransom Pride

‘The Conjuring: The Last Rites’ Teaser: Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga Take One Final Stand as Exorcists Ed and Lorraine Warren
Image
Ed and Lorraine Warren have one final case to crack in the iconic “The Conjuring” franchise. The paranormal investigating duo, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, first appeared onscreen in 2013; now 12 years and a slew of spinoff films later, the original “The Conjuring” will close out with “The Conjuring: The Last Rites.”

Michael Chaves returns to direct “The Last Rites.” In total, the franchise has three “Conjuring” films, three “Annabelle” features, two “Nun” movies, and “The Curse of La Llorona.” Chaves helmed “La Llorona,” “The Nun II,” and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.” A “Conjuring” series is in development at Max as well.

“The Last Rites” is set in the mid-1980s when the Warrens were retired. However, the couple returns for one last case involving the Smurl family. The Warrens most famously investigated the 1976 hauntings in Amityville, New York, which inspired the “Amityville Horror” franchise.

“Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.”

“Sinners is a unique one. It’s genre fluid. There are vampires in the film, but it’s really about a lot more than just that. It’s one of many elements, I’ll say. I...

James Wan Reveals How The Conjuring Became the MCU of Horror Franchises
Image
Franchises are in fashion and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not the only proof of this. Horror sagas like The Conjuring or The Purge have shown that telling different stories within the same universe can work very well, even if it wasn't planned from the very beginning.

The first film in the horror franchise created by James Wan was released in 2013, and a total of eight films and five short films have been released since then, with The Conjuring 4 and The Nun 2 soon to be released. However, 10 years ago, not even Wan himself imagined how far the franchise would go.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director explained how a great shared universe was created from a movie in the best style of Marvel Studios:

“It happened organically, but in the back of our minds, we always knew that the Warrens investigated so many different cases...

Silk Road Review: Dark Web Mastermind Gets a Choppy Biopic
Image
Silk Road tells the true story of Ross Ulbricht; the infamous dark web mastermind better known as his online moniker, "Dread Pirate Roberts". A brash egomaniac with an ultra-libertarian, anti-government philosophy, Ulbricht created the "Silk Road", an untraceable Amazon-esque marketplace for narcotics and illegal goods on the internet. The film charts his meteoric rise and fall, in tandem with the unhinged DEA agent who initially found him. Silk Road has a choppy, Wikipedia styled narrative that explores the radical extremes of both men. It could have used a more cinematic flow, but is certainly interesting to see.

We first meet Ross Ulbricht (Nick Robinson) at a bar in San Francisco circa 2011. He rails to his best friend (Daniel David Stewart) against the government for restricting personal freedoms. His diatribe catches the attention of the fetching Julia (Alexandra Shipp). She's impressed by his brash demeanor and ideology. Ulbricht wants to change the world.

The Seven Five (2014)
‘The Seven Five’ To Reunite Dirty NYPD Cops At Doc NYC Premiere: Trailer
The Seven Five (2014)
Exclusive: “I considered myself both a cop and a gangster.” New documentary The Seven Five chronicles the story of New York City police officer Michael Dowd, whose headline-grabbing 1992 arrest for leading a ring of criminalized cops exposed widespread corruption in the NYPD and sent him to prison for 14 years. Friday at Doc NYC, Dowd will appear at the film’s world premiere, where he’ll be reunited for the first time in decades with the former partner who exposed him.

Dowd began squeezing dealers for cash while working out of the 75th Precinct in crime-ridden East New York, eventually recruiting partner Kenny Eurell and others into an expanding ring of dirty cops active from 1986 through 1992. Their flashy transgressions were so flagrant that then-Mayor David Dinkins appointed the Mollen Commission to investigate, uncovering a history of “brutality, theft, abuse of authority and active police criminality” that had been willfully ignored by Internal Affairs.

Exclusive: Lizzy Caplan Talks The Last Rites of Ransom Pride
Lizzy Caplan recalls taking on the female lead in this action-packed Western ode to Tarantino and Peckinpah

Tiller Russell's action-packed Western The Last Rites of Ransom Pride seemingly shot forth from out of nowhere, quietly amassing a cult audience that has fallen in love with its rich, atmospheric photography and its hearty scenes of violent mayhem. Lizzy Caplan, who rose to fame in Cloverfield and put in stellar work on the short-lived but much loved Starz sitcom Party Down, stars as the film's protagonist, a tough-talking, quick-drawing cowgirl out for revenge.

Its not often that we see a female lead in a Western, and it certainly adds an honest and unique flavor to the adventure that Lizzy's Juliette Flowers embarks upon in The Last Rites of Ransom Pride. With an ensemble cast that also includes Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, Scott Speedman, Peter Dinklage, and Jason Priestley, Tiller Russell has...

The Last Rites Of Ransom Pride Trailer | Janice Ian Gits Her Gun
Jesus, it's a slow news day.

So here's the trailer for The Last Rites Of Ransom Pride, a western/revenge flick (aren't all Westerns revenge flicks?) directed and co-written by Tiller Russell (previous works of note: none). It's got a fairly unique premise contained in its (albeit brief) IMDb synopsis: A western centered on a woman trying to bring her outlaw lover home for his burial.

It's also got a pretty interesting cast -- Lizzy Caplan (Mean Girls, "True Blood"), Peter Dinklage (!), Kris Kristofferson, and Dwight Yoakam. If you can ignore the presence of Jason Priestly (finally returning to westerns after his brief, pathetic turn in Tombstone) and the man-shaped pile of wood called Scott Speedman (again, you mention "Felicity" and you get a badger crammed up your ass), it's a fine cast.

So here's the trailer. And it looks fucking terrible. Terrible accents, terrible editing, atrocious dialogue, and fourth grade-level production values.

Lizzy Caplan and The Last Rites of Ransom Pride Trailer
Lizzy Caplan stars in Tiller Russell’s Western “The Last Rites of Ransom Pride”, in which she plays an outlaw woman trying to bring her outlaw lover (the aforementioned Ransom Pride, played by Scott Speedman) home for burial. Things get really complicated, as you can see from this trailer, and much gunfightin’ ensues. It’s a Western, and I love me my Westerns. This one definitely looks pretty good, too. Starring Lizzy Caplan, Scott Speedman, Jason Priestley, Peter Dinklage, Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, Jon Foster, and “NCIS’s” Cote De Pablo. The film’s official site has the 2009 movie finally making its premiere in L.A. at the Laemmle Sunset 5 on September 10 and 11, before rolling out to selected theaters in Texas (Dallas, Forth Worth, and Denton) and Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson). Check the official site for more showings. The film is also up for DVD/Blu-ray pre-order on Amazon with a October 5, 2010 release date.

Eiff 2010: The Last Rites Of Ransom Pride review
Carl reviews The Last Rites Of Ransom Pride, and finds even the presence of Lizzy Caplin and Kris Kristofferson can't save the Western from mediocrity…

There's this girl called Juliette Flowers, and she was in love with Ransom Pride who, after accidentally killing a priest, got shot and killed. His body was then claimed by some kind of spiritual witch lady who said he belonged to the devil now, and Juliette says, "I'm having none of that!" and decides that she'll do everything to get his body back.

So she puts on some ridiculously awful clothes, and the dumbest, unfitting hat I've ever seen, goes to see the witch lady, Bruja, and then lets slip that he has a brother. Which, apparently, will do for a swap. The devil won't mind who it actually is, apparently. "Oh, he's got a dog. Will that do?"

So, she goes off and finds...

Casting Bites: Yeardley Smith Goes to 'High School' & More
Just a month ago, we learned that Adrien Brody and Michael Chiklis were heading back to High School -- a rather unique comedy about a high school valedictorian (Matt Bush) who gets high with the school stoner (Sean Marquette), and then tries to use his smarts to get out of an upcoming drug test. Rather then messing with his own results, he schemes to get the entire school stoned to beat the system. Brody's the drug dealer, Chiklis is the principal, and now The Hollywood Reporter posts that Lisa Simpson, aka Yeardley Smith, will play a homeroom teacher while Luis Chavez (Crash) plays a druggie friend of the valedictorian.

Meanwhile, Variety reports that Navy NCIS actress Cote de Pablo is making the jump to the big screen with Scott Speedman's The Last Rites of Ransom Pride. The Calgary Herald describes it as "a violent ransom about a woman trying...
