2024's Most Overlooked Indie Thriller Is Destined To Become A Cult Classic
Image
In an era of cinematic sameness, Jt Mollner's Strange Darling shines as a bold, unique thriller that deserves far more attention than it received upon its release. This indie gem combines a riveting nonlinear narrative, stellar performances, a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack, and breathtaking cinematography to craft an experience unlike any other. It’s a film that balances surrealism, suspense, and emotional depth, making it a prime candidate to join the ranks of cult classics like Donnie Darko and Mulholland Drive.

Unfortunately, due to a combination of marketing missteps and limited theatrical availability, Strange Darling struggled to find its audience. However, its dedicated fanbase, enthusiastic critical acclaim, and inherent haunting qualities all but guarantee its rediscovery. As it continues to gain traction through word-of-mouth and streaming platforms, this future classic’s star is bound to rise.

What If…? The Red Guardian Stopped the Winter Soldier? — Season 3 Episode 3 Spoiler Review and Recap
Image
So far, What If… has gone two for two in its most recent season. Tacking on a new story based around The Red Room and the events that would spark Captain America: Civil War seems like a way to keep the audience in its pocket. “What if…The Red Guardian Stopped the Winter Soldier?” returns David Harbour as The Red Guardian, and pairing him with future Thunderbolts co-star Sebastian Stan, the Russian buddy dynamic could go well. However, “The Red Guardian Stopped the Winter Soldier” struggles beyond that corporate mandate.

“What if…The Red Guardian Stopped the Winter Soldier?” Recap

In security footage, we see the events leading up to the assassination of Howard Stark by the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). However, The Red Guardian (Harbour) stops the shooting just before it occurs. After the credits, we return to The Red Guardian getting his assignment in Ohio. He wants to...

Image
Turkish producer Onur Güvenatam founded Ogm Pictures in 2019, and has since shepherded a steady stream of hit series and movies such as drama “The Red Room,” the widely-sold “Golden Boy” and “One Way for Tomorrow,” the first Netflix original film out of Turkey.

For Netflix, Ogm has also made Turkish original film “Paper Lives” and the series “The Gift.” Güvenatam is at Mipcom with new shows “Stickman” (Çöp Adam), “Miracle of Love” (Yüz Yıllık Mucize), and “Broken Destiny,” (Toprak ile Fidan) being sold by his recently launched in-house sales company Ogm Universe.

He spoke to Variety about the secret to Ogm’s success, and vented frustrations about the business model imposed by U.S. streamers.

“Golden Boy” was the most-watched television drama last year in Turkey and has been sold to over 100 countries. Why does it connect so well with audiences?

‘Stand by Me’ Star Wil Wheaton Says Parents’ Emotional Abuse Powered His Breakout Performance
Image
Rob Reiner’s 1986 film “Stand by Me” remains a touchstone coming-of-age classic 35 years later. While the film served as a breakout vehicle for Wil Wheaton, who starred as 12-year-old aspiring writer Gordie in the adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novella “The Body,” it wasn’t without a lot of pain for the actor. In a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies touting the film’s 35th anniversary, Wheaton (now 48) revealed how his difficult experiences as a budding child star in Hollywood, and the emotional torment inflicted by his parents because of it, shaped the role.

“I didn’t want to be an actor when I was a kid. My parents forced me to do it, my mother made me do it. My mother coached me to go into her agency and tell the children’s agent, ‘I want to do what mommy does,’” said Wheaton, whose mother Debra was an actress...

Turkish TV Dramas Take Edgier Turn in Aim for Bigger Global Sales
Image
Turkish TV dramas continue to make inroads around the world, primarily in linear and pay-tv slots congenial to these sophisticated soaps, which are generally sold in packages of 100 commercial hours per show. But bolder new titles in six-10 episode formats are increasingly being made for streaming platform play.

“The market is hot: we are producing like crazy despite the pandemic,” says Ahmet Ziyalar, chief of Istanbul-based sales and production company Inter Medya, who notes “it’s really hard to find available talents.”

Prices for Turkish product dropped some in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, he points out, “because traditional broadcasters lost their advertising revenues.”

But ad intake is now starting to pick up. “We are signing more contracts,” says Ziyalar, who adds that due to lower prices “his revenues are the same” as before the coronavirus crisis.

Inter Medya’s top-selling shows include global hit “The Ambassador’s Daughter,” centering...

‘The Haunting of Bly Manor': Here’s How to Find All the Ghosts You Missed
Mckenna Grace, Lulu Wilson, Victoria Pedretti, Julian Hilliard, Paxton Singleton, and Violet McGraw in The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Among the many tricks 2018’s “The Haunting of Hill House” played on its viewers was hiding dozens of ghosts in plain sight throughout the 10-episode Netflix series. The treat, obviously, was being the fan who could spot all the spirits on their own. So when “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” the second chapter of Mike Flanagan’s horror anthology, launched last Friday, people went right to work looking for the specters lurking in the shadows of Bly’s halls.

Now, if you had a little more trouble finding them this time around, here’s a tip from Flanagan himself: Check out Flora’s (Amelie Bea Smith) dollhouse.

“The dollhouse is like our Marauder’s Map for this season,” Flanagan told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published Monday. “It was an idea that was actually born of Rebecca Klingel, one of our writers who also casually came up with the concept...
