The MCU Has The Perfect Chance To Answer One 10-Year-Old Mystery I Never Thought I'd Get An Answer To
Image
In the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series, Marvel Studios has the perfect opportunity to address one Defenders Saga mystery that I never thought would be mentioned in the MCU after Daredevil's cancelation. In early 2024, Marvel confirmed that the Defenders Saga, which originally comprised six Marvel Television shows released on Netflix between 2015 and 2019, is officially canon to the MCU. This made me very excited, as it meant that the new Daredevil: Born Again series could resolve some of Daredevil's most annoying loose ends.

Much of the original cast of Daredevil has already been confirmed to be returning in Marvel Studios' upcoming Daredevil: Born Again, including Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, Wilson Bethel, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson and more. With the series expected to pick up a number of years after Daredevil season 3's finale, however, I'm very interested to see how these characters and stories have changed. Daredevil: Born Again...

Clint Eastwood's 1960s War Movie Classic Unexpectedly Became A Heavy Metal Song
Image
Clint Eastwood is known for his Western films, but his World War II drama, Where Eagles Dare, was so popular that it inspired a hit heavy metal song. The Western star Eastwood has appeared in and directed many films in his almost seven-decade career. While some of Clint Eastwood's movies are underrated, many have been major box-office hits with pop-culture influences, reflecting his versatility and enduring appeal as a filmmaker.

Though Clint Eastwood's career-defining roles have undeniably impacted the Western genre, he's also influenced other aspects of media beyond cinema. Eastwood's 1968 war movie was the basis for a famous band's song 15 years later. Though it wasn't intended to inspire music, Where Eagles Dare became a classic heavy metal song, proving his work could go beyond film and resonate with both audiences and musicians.

Image
Marvel Studios embarked on a creative overhaul for Daredevil: Born Again, setting a new standard for future TV shows in the MCU. Actor Charlie Cox hints at the complexity of the changes made, emphasizing Marvel's commitment to improvement. The new direction aims to create TV shows accessible to all viewers, regardless of previous MCU knowledge, marking a new era.

Marvel Cinematic Universe star Charlie Cox reflects on the creative overhaul that occurred with Daredevil: Born Again. While it has become one of the most highly anticipated TV shows in the MCU timeline, the journey of the continuation of the acclaimed Netflix show hasn't been an easy one. Daredevil: Born Again was one of the bigger MCU projects to take the headlines in 2023 when it was revealed that Marvel Studios had let go of the original creative team in order to retool the series.

Austin Ott Leaving The Bachelorette Proves The Show Doesn't Care About Its Contestants
Image
The Bachelorette season 21's Austin Ott didn't have enough time to build a connection with Jenn Tran, proving that the producers don't care about the contestants. Producer-created drama dominated Jenn's time and took away from her forming relationships with men such as Austin. Austin was pushed aside for other contestants due to the large number of men on Jenn's season.

The Bachelorette season 21 contestant Austin Ott said goodbye to Jenn Tran after not building much of a connection with her, and his self-elimination proves that the show doesn't care about its contestants. Austin, a 28-year-old sales executive from San Diego, California, had high hopes when he met Jenn, a 26-year-old physician assistant student originally from Hillsdale, New Jersey, but currently living in Boston, Massachusetts. However, he never received a one-on-one date from Jenn, and hardly got to spend any time with her.

Throughout The Bachelorette season 21, Austin tried his hardest to impress Jenn.

Image

Free TV Networks, the broadcast-focused joint venture being spearheaded by industry veteran Jonathan Katz, has launched its latest multicast network Dare — although under a different, but familiar, name.

On Monday, Katz affirmed Dare will immediately rebrand to Defy after absorbing the reality-based content library from a similarly-named channel that was recently wound down by the E. W. Scripps Company. This week, Scripps replaced their version of Defy TV with a simulcast of streaming network Ion Plus.

“With an existing large and growing audience, the Defy network features distinctive, compelling, and, above all, entertaining programming that viewers truly can’t get enough of,” Katz said in a statement. “Defy offers value-conscious consumers a differentiated and world-class reality channel delivered for free, over-the-air, with addictive series proven to deliver for advertisers.”

Scripps replacing Defy TV with Ion Plus on broadcast TV
Image
The logo for the multicast network Ion Plus.

Three years ago, the E. W. Scripps Company pulled its multicast network Ion Plus from broadcast TV as it worked to diversify its over-the-air multicast offerings.

Now, Scripps has decided the time is right for Ion Plus to make its triumphant return to over-the-air TV.

On Monday, Scripps will shut down its Defy TV network and replace it on Ion-owned stations and third-party affiliates with a simulcast of the Ion Plus Fast channel, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The relaunch of Ion Plus on broadcast TV will make it instantly available in more than 90 percent of American homes that previously received Defy TV. The channel will also continue to be available on Fast platforms like The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus and Freevee.

Defy TV launched three years ago, offering reality shows and knowledge-based programming that was geared toward young male viewers.

‘Dare’ (2009): Emmy Rossum, Zach Gilford, and Ashley Springer Star in ‘Challengers’ for Theater Kids

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: Discovering the Power of a Dick… Ahead of Its Time

Non-monogamy became a common topic of conversation this spring as Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” made any mention of pro tennis the conversational equivalent of a three-way sex invite.

On dating apps, searches for “open relationships” continued to rise in popularity just as reality television embraced multi-partnered dynamics through shows like Peacock’s “Couple to Throuple.” Even in 2024, polyamory isn’t outright “mainstream” by any stretch of the imagination(s). But as far as contemporary relationships are concerned, the “three’s...

Image
Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV co-directors Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz have denied Marc Summers’ claim that he was “ambushed” into appearing on the Investigation Discovery docuseries.

“We are clear with each participant about the nature of our projects,” the helmers said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Friday.

Their response comes shortly after the former Double Dare host appeared on The Elvis Duran Show, where he alleged that the directors did not disclose the nature of the feature, which launched March 17 and 18 to big viewership, when asking him to appear.

“I got called by these folks saying they wanted to do a documentary on Nickelodeon and so I said sure,” he explained.

Summers said that, while being interviewed for what has become a hit docuseries, he made positive comments about his time on the network, but claimed the Quiet on Set directors “did...

‘Imaginary’ Director Jeff Wadlow on His Key Casting Battle and Competing Imaginary Friends Movies
Image
It’s been 20 years since Jeff Wadlow began his career in the entertainment industry, and he’s since created a name for himself as a highly reliable Swiss army knife. He can write, direct and produce across film and television, and he also has the added reputation of being an “idea guy.” When his career was at a crossroads in the early 2010s, he wrote his way out of it and sold spec scripts for what would become Kick-Ass 2 (2013) and Bloodshot (2020). And throughout the 2010s, whenever his next movie needed a bit of time to get off the ground, he’d put on his writer hat and join Carlton Cuse’s writers’ rooms for Bates Motel and The Strain.

The filmmaker is now back with his third Blumhouse horror film, Imaginary, which chronicles Pyper Braun’s Alice and the imaginary friendship she forms with her stepmother’s (DeWanda Wise) childhood teddy bear,...

Blumhouse's Night Swim Continues A Clever Recent Horror Movie Trend
Image
Night Swim turns a children's game into a terrifying experience, echoing a recent trend in horror movies. The movie builds tension effectively by utilizing a game of Marco Polo in a dark and unreliable pool. Other horror movies, such as Truth or Dare and Ready or Not, have successfully transformed innocent games into sinister and bloody experiences.

One of the most memorable scenes in Blumhouse's latest horror movie Night Swim continues a clever horror movie trend that has become increasingly popular in the genre over the last few years. The new movie stars Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon, and follows a family that moves into a new house, seeking a fresh start, only to be plagued by an ancient evil that dwells in the backyard pool. Based off a 2014 short film of the same name, Night Swim carries a PG-13 rating mainly due to the scariness of some of its gruesome apparitions.

This Canceled YA Adaptation Is Still Netflix's Best Christmas Rom-Com
Image
Dash & Lily's limited series format perfectly captures the charm and essence of a seasonal rom-com, making it Netflix's best holiday offering. The show's longer runtime allows for fun plot complications and well-rounded side characters, enhancing the overall romantic comedy experience. Dash & Lily is not only a stellar Christmas rom-com, but also proves that Netflix is capable of producing excellent limited series adaptations of YA novels.

Netflix's best Christmas rom-com isn't a feature film, but a limited series: Dash & Lily, a 2020 adaptation of a young adult novel. Based on Dash & Lily's Book of Dares, an entry in Rachel Cohn and David Levithan's beloved book series, the Netflix show last just one season, though that was a purposeful decision on the streamer's part. Like the source material, Joe Tracz's romantic comedy series centers on its titular characters, who are played by budding movie...

During the streamer’s Tudum fan event on June 17, “Heartstopper” co-stars Corinna Brown and Kizzy Edgell — who play the couple Tara and Darcy on the series — introduced the first scene of Season 2, which picks up the morning after the Season 1 finale. In that episode, Charlie and Nick officially became boyfriends, and Nick came out as bisexual to his mother, Sarah (Olivia Colman).

In the Season 2 clip, Charlie wakes up the next morning in a young love afterglow, to a text from Nick that simply reads “Hi ❤️” — which Charlie immediately declares to be a “good morning text.” From that moment, Charlie remains glued to his phone as he continually texts with Nick during his morning routine, to...

The Dare Brings Back Early-2000s NYC Rock for 12 Joyless Minutes on ‘The Sex EP’
Image
To even comment on the Dare, the provoca-pop project of 27-year-old private-school substitute teacher turned downtown NYC enfant celebre Harrison Patrick Smith, is to have lost the game. The Dare, which released its debut EP last week, feels like a musical pseudo-event, existing only for the purpose of feeding its perpetual-motion publicity machine. Listening to The Sex EP doesn’t do much to ease the feeling that the songs are only tangential to Smith’s nascent project’s overall point.

More than 12-ish minutes, The Sex EP rages through a...

V/H/S/99 Review: One Of The Least Interesting Entries In This Wobbly Franchise [TIFF]
Image
I love horror anthology movies ... at least in theory. I really love the idea of an anthology — a series of short films tied together in one neat package. But the truth is, there are more bad horror anthologies than good. Even the best of the best almost always have at least one segment worth skipping. The "V/H/S" franchise might be the worst offender — there are five films in the series so far, and I can count the number of good segments on one hand. The best of the best is, without question, Timo Tjahjanto and Gareth Evans' "Safe Haven" from "V/H/S/2," a brilliantly-conceived and genuinely scary story about a death cult. But nothing else in the series has ever come close to that tale.

In fact, I've found the series so miss-heavy that I kind of gave up on it. And then came "V/H/S/94," which ended up being my favorite in the entire franchise.

Law & Order: Organized Crime adds West Wing alumn
Image
Janel Moloney joins Law & Order: Organized Crime in Season 3. Pic credit: NBC

Law & Order: Organized Crime is adding a familiar TV face for Season 3.

Janel Moloney, best known for her role as Donna Moss on The West Wing, will be playing a detective in a recurring role in Season 3.

The actress, who has also guest-starred in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, shared a photo of herself on set in her as-yet-unnamed role.

The actress has a long list of TV credits that includes a guest-starring role in another Dick Wolf Entertainment series.

Moloney is the latest edition for Season 3, which is undergoing a shift from the sudden departure of Bryan Goluboff as showrunner last week.

The addition of a TV veteran like Moloney looks ready to spark Law & Order: Organized Crime in Season 3 and give Stabler another tough lady to play off of.

“American Horror Stories” Review – ‘Bloody Mary’ Gets Lost In Its Own Reflection
Image
‘American Horror Stories’ offers its unique take on a classic trope, but thin characters and predictable plotting result in a shattered episode.

“You light a candle in a room and then you say her name three times…”

There’s a natural shorthand that exists with creepy characters like Bloody Mary that have become omnipresent in pop culture. Not only are most American Horror Story audiences aware of Bloody Mary’s urban legend, but there’s been a demand to see her worked into the series for some time now. The twisted “monkey’s paw” logic that accompanies Bloody Mary and similar specters is ripe material for the horror genre to explore and low-rent Blumhouse material like Wish Upon or Truth or Dare (or Shudder’s Kandisha) do exactly that. American Horror Stories finally finds a suitable story to explore this staple, but “Bloody Mary” is arguably the weakest application of this premise.

‘Intrusion’ Review: Dream House Turns Nightmare in Pedestrian Netflix Thriller
Image
If we have learned anything from movies of recent years, it is that moving into one’s dream house will surely lead to terror and death. That improbable yet familiar arc is traced again in “Intrusion,” wherein the domesticity under threat belongs to a wide-eyed Freida Pinto. Director Adam Salky and writer Christopher Sparling’s thriller will provide uninspired if serviceable fodder for subscribers when it launches on that platform Sept. 22.

The Parsons have just moved from Boston into a luxe, secluded New Mexico home that Henry (Logan Marshall-Green) designed, in part to provide him and Meera (Pinto) a fresh start after her difficult recovery from breast cancer. After dining out one night, they return to discover the place has been ransacked, though the intruders took nothing apart from a laptop and two cellphones. An alarm system is hastily installed — yet there’s another break-in, this one while the couple are asleep in bed.

BFI London Film Festival Adjusts Lineup With Film Shortage
Image
The late-summer reactivation of the film festival circuit presented fest directors and programmers with an array of challenges, both expansive and restrictive. On the one hand, they’ve had a bounty of withheld titles to choose from; on the other, the industry stasis of the past six months has put any number of previously expected projects indefinitely out of reach.

2020’s London Film Festival, in particular, has felt the domino effect of the year’s other cancelled and compromised events.

A predominantly public-oriented affair, the Lff has always placed less stress on major world premieres — though organizers often manage to secure a heavyweight or two — than on cherry-picking the best the year’s other festivals had to offer, and bringing those highlights to British audiences for the first time. What happens to a festival of festivals, then, when the fests haven’t come through?

As this year’s Lff lineup (running Oct.

Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Azhy Robertson in Marriage Story (2019)
Dare Me review
Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Azhy Robertson in Marriage Story (2019)
Netflix seems to have found its niche. In the films department, the streamer has invested heavily of late in prestige content from some of Hollywood’s most respected minds, resulting in awards-friendly (if not award-winning) output like Marriage Story, The Irishman and The Two Popes.

The TV department has different priorities. Bingeable true crime documentaries and soapy dramas fill the site’s television slate, driving clicks and social media conversation often with markedly less investment. Think Locke & Key, Riverdale, You.

Dare Me is the quintessential new addition to that latter group. A ten-part series which first aired in the States on the USA Network late last year, joining Netflix internationally March 20, the show is a claustrophobic and occasionally bloody look at the always-competitive dynamic of high school teens. Cutthroat is the key word. Spoken in ominous voiceover, the show’s first line – “There’s something dangerous about the boredom of...
