A cult classic comedy franchise starring Ice Cube has multiple installments trending on streaming three decades after the premiere of the first movie. Ice Cube is best known as a rap icon, having been a key member of the gangsta rap group N.W.A., which was formed in 1987. Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time, and since it debuted in 2011, it has been a cultural phenomenon. Attempts at a Minecraft film can be traced back to 2014, and after over a decade in development, A Minecraft Movie is set to open in theaters in April 2025. Beginning March 1, Peacock subscribers will be able to stream Paramount Pictures' Sonic the Hedgehog, starring Ben Schwartz as the voice of the titular blue hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehogstar Natasha Rothwell opens up about her hopes for another return to the franchise.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Rothwell was asked if she was looking forward to reprising her role as Rachel in the next Sonic the Hedgehog film, as well as what impression her experience on the past three entries in the series had left on her. "I hope so. I mean, Jeff Fowler, he's just so lovely. And Toby Asher and the gang, Tika, James, like I've been in all of them and so absolutely I'll come back," Rothwell responded. "What's so crazy about the third one, I flew to London to shoot my scenes for the third one and then went to Thailand. So I literally stopped and shot it and then kept going. So it's cool to look back because I'm just like, I barely remember being there because it was such a whirlwind of a trip.

When Mufasa: The Lion Kingopened in theaters on Dec. 20, 2024, the same weekend as Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the Lion King sequel made a little over half of Sonic 3’s $62 million opening weekend. Disney’s Mufasa earned just $35 million over the Dec. 2024 holiday weekend. Now, per The Hollywood Reporter,Mufasa has taken the lead over Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in terms of its total box office take.

Domestically, the Barry Jenkins-directed Mufasa, starring Aaron Pierre, has earned $232.7 million and its global total is around $670 million as of Feb. 9. Mufasa could jump past the $700 million before its all said and done. The film had a $200 million-plus budget, prior to marketing costs. Mufasa, the weekend of Feb. 7 through Feb. 9, added another $3.9 million to its box office tally, landing the film in fourth place for the weekend.

In 1993, "Super Mario Bros." became the first live-action feature film to be based on a video game. It didn't go well. Budgeted at somewhere just south of $50 million, "Super Mario Bros." grossed a meager $20 million in the United States and performed poorly overseas. Its failure was essentially a fait accompli given the behind-the-scenes turmoil that found directors Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton briefly getting locked out of the editing room, but the film itself was the kind of Hollywood debacle that was too weird to disregard. The production design was striking, the creature effects inventive, and the casting utterly bizarre. Bob Hoskins as Mario facing off against Dennis Hopper as King Koopa? This might not seem outré today, but at the time it was bizarre to see respected actors seemingly slumming in what many considered to be a glorified piece of advertising.

As a fervent gamer at the time, I found it odd.

“Flight Risk,” an action thriller directed by Mel Gibson and starring Mark Wahlberg as a balding, unhinged pilot, landed in first place with $12 million from 3,161 North American theaters in its opening weekend.

It’s the second consecutive Lionsgate release, following “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” to debut at No. 1 as the studio takes advantage of January’s otherwise desolate box office landscape. Case in point: Second place went to Disney’s “Mufasa” which opened six weeks ago. The “Lion King” prequel added an additional $8.7 million from 3,420 cinemas, bringing its tally to $221 million in North America and $626.7 million globally.

“Flight Risk” brought in another $4.2 million from 39 international territories over the weekend, boosting its worldwide haul to $16.2 million. The film cost $25 million, so it’ll need to keep flying during its theatrical run. Things died down for a while and a stigma was made that video game to movie adaptations cannot be made successfully.

Shortly before Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released, it was confirmed that a fourth movie would open in Spring 2027. Now, it's been confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will drop on March 19 of that year.

This isn't surprising, particularly as the third movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, has already become the franchise's highest-grossing instalment with $218 million domestically and $422 million worldwide. The threequel has already hit digital platforms, which is a shame in some ways as there was surely still money to be made at the box office.

Still, the studio has to be happy with this result as the franchise continues getting bigger; Sonic the Hedgehog grossed $319 million globally in 2020 and the sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, topped that with $405 million. As a result, the series has now collectively passed $1 billion.

According to Paramount Pictures, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has driven over $180 million in global consumer spending from home entertainment rentals and digital purchases.

The day before Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opened in theaters, Paramount Pictures announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 would debut in 2027. At the time, no specific release date was given, but following the third entry's impressive box office run and now being available on digital, the studio is planting a flag for a release date. Despite Sonic the Hedgehog 3 having done very well over the Christmas and New Year holidays, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is racing into the spring season.

Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures has set Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for a Mar. 19, 2027 release date. This puts it one week before Easter weekend, which was a similar release schedule that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 did, by opening one week before Easter in 2022. While 2027 feels like a long wait for fans, it is shorter than the two-and-a-half-year gap between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

It features the live-action debut of Shadow the Hedgehog, with Keanu Reeves lending his voice to the tormented "Ultimate Lifeform." It has Jim Carrey playing not one, but two Robotniks. But most importantly, it keeps the focus on Sonic and his family - with said family consisting of Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessy), Knuckles (Idris Elba), and semi-adoptive parents Tom and Maddie Wachowski (James Marsden and Tika Sumpter). It's a far cry from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which overloaded on human characters that added little to the plot.
