2.10 The Assassin

With a title like this, you’d think this episode would be exciting, but it manages to evade that branding by getting all the main characters to act like complete idiots.

The lesson of the previous episode was that Ephraim is totally useless with a sniper rifle. If you can’t shoot a stationary target when he’s unaware of you less than 100ft away with a precision weapon, then why would you use it?

Building on that concept, in this story we discover that the same person the same weapon, with a scope this time, positioned further away is still an abysmal shot. Perhaps next week it will be revealed that Ephraim never actually intended to shave his head, but just to trim some errant nose hair and he missed.

Pop culture comes to life in St. Louis next month! It’s the Wizard World Comic Con May 22nd through the 24th at America’s Center downtown (701 Convention Plaza – St. Louis, Mo 63101), and boy oh boy, do they have an amazing line-up of guests!

Sure, you got the comic artists and cosplayers, wrestlers, a St. Louis Ram, a Power Ranger, and of course the ubiquitous Walking Dead stars, but what We Are Movie Geeks is most excited about are the celebrities from movies that will be on hand: Horror legend George Romero, Sharknado legend Tara Reid, horror hostess with the mostest (if you know what I mean) Elvira, Guardians Of The Galaxy tough guy Dave Bautista, Henry the serial killer himself Michael Rooker, Do The Right Thing’s ‘Buggin Out’ Giancarlo Esposito. Lord of the Rings Trilogy’s Pippin Billy Boyd, Captain America squeeze Hayley Atwell, and Silent Bob’s buddy Jay aka Jason Mewes.

If you haven’t gotten to episode 10 of The Strain yet, I’d highly recommend avoiding this interview because it’s a total game changer for Natalie Brown’s character, Kelly Goodweather. I got the opportunity to talk to Brown at San Diego Comic-Con and, at the time, I’d only seen three episodes and dubbed her component the family drama portion of the show. That's still true to a point, but certainly not in the same way anymore. Again, this interview is packed with spoilers, so do not continue on unless you’ve completed the first season or at least know what goes down in episode 10, “Loved Ones” - one of the show’s most powerful installments by far. Remember everything I complained about last week on The Strain? Episode 6, ‘Occultation,’ gets it all right. There’s a good deal of strong action and gore, but what gives this episode so much momentum are the heated, engrossing conversations paired with a powerful foreboding tone.

The idea of an occultation is just genius. The writers easily could have jumped right into the vampire takeover, but instead, they up the suspense tenfold by essentially teasing the death and devastation to come. Some pretty good names have come in to fill out the casting ranks of Marcus Nispel's new film, Backmask, and we have all the latest on who's who and what's what. Or something like that. No really, we're good at this, we promise.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Stephen Lang (Avatar, Conan the Barbarian, "Terra Nova"), Kelly Blatz (Prom Night, From Within), Brett Dier, Nick Nicotera (Bitten), Nick Nordella (Greenberg), and Michael Ormsby (The Brothers Solomon) have all been cast alongside the previously announced Gage Golightly and Brittany Curran.

Kirsten Helms penned the script that follows a group of teenagers who accidentally release an evil spirit that starts to possess them one by one.

Backmask begins shooting soon in Rhode Island.

Synopsis

During a sex, drugs, and rock-fueled party, six small-town teenagers find an old vintage record and decide to play it backwards in order to listen for any subliminal/satanic messages.

The vampire film is one of the oldest sub-genres of horror, and are prone to both fantastic hits, and utter failures. As with any genre, there are some great films that slip through the cracks, and find themselves lost in the minds of the viewer, with the memories of more recent, or lasting films. A few details are emerging on the upcoming action horror piece titled The Watermen. Jason Mewes (Bitten) will star and recently, this title moved into post-production. A teaser poster is now available, left and this title warns horror fans to stay out of the deep Atlantic. The long synopsis is below.

"When a group of young, rich friends led by the dynamic Trailor (Jason Mewes) set out for a deep sea fishing trip aboard a million-dollar dreamboat, an electrical fire rocks the ship. I'm not gonna lie, it's a pretty uninteresting week for new releases on DVD and Blu-ray. The only really high profile flick in stores today is Antoine Fuqua's Brooklyn's Finest starring Don Cheadle, Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Wesley Snipes. Also out this week is Tom Ford's critically acclaimed drama A Single Man, the Swedish thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and the vampire comedy Bitten starring Jason Mewes. Yep, getting to the bottom of the barrel pretty quickly here. Hey everyone! I hope everyone had a fun and safe 4th! I went and saw Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and I Loved it! Can't wait for it to come out on DVD. Anywho let's move on to this week's releases. Here are the highlights of the week.

 

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and rebellious computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) team up to investigate the unsolved disappearance of wealthy Henrik Vanger's (Sven-Bertil Taube) teen niece (Ewa Fröling), only to uncover dark secrets about Vanger's powerful family. Niels Arden Oplev directs this Swedish thriller based on the first novel from Stieg Larsson's best-selling trilogy.

I never heard of Erica Cox until someone sent me a link to her sex scene from the vampire flick Bitten. The clip reminded me of 1992's Innocent Blood for some reason. Fangoria gave the movie a luke warm review, but from the video I saw, it may be worth a look for the nudity alone. The movie is directed by Harvey Glazer, stars Jason Mewes and is currently available on DVD.

Gloucester - The night Sebastian Junger arrived in town, it was a rather mild and cloudless day. There would be need to use the phrase “The Perfect Storm” to hype the writer’s talk and signing at Raleigh’s Quail Ridge Books. It was The Perfect Mild.

This appears to be a rarity in today’s journalism. Anything that happens now gets blamed on “A Perfect Storm” of calamities after Junger’s book about the doomed fishermen. Wall Street meltdown, Bp well disaster and McRib are all given The Perfect Storm treatment. Sadly enough, he does not get a nickel every time it’s said on TV.

At one point in Bitten (coming on no-frills DVD from Vivendi July 6), a new vampire film starring Jason Mewes, the sexy Danika (a gorgeous Erica Cox) says with full conviction, “It’s like I want to f**k you and eat you at the same time.” Now I want you to take a good, long look at this quote and ask yourself one question—was this meant to be funny, or is it just bad writing?...

Arriving on DVD stateside on July 6th is Harvey Glazer's 'Bitten', a new vampire love story starring Jazon Mewes and Erica Cox and penned by Tim McGregor and Tyler Levine. Bitten starring Jason Mewes and Erica Cox will appear on DVD July 6th courtesy of Rhi and Vivendi Entertainment. Mewes plays Jack a night-shift paramedic who gets romantically involved with a femme fatale who suffers a vampire's bite. Fango got the scoop from director Sean Cain that Jason Mewes has joined the cast of his latest feature, Breath Of Hate (which we last reported on here). “His character is a gamer nerd who falls for a escort,” Cain says; that escort is the film’s heroine, who is terrorized by three homicidal asylum escapees on her last job.

“It’s through his love that he brings her back from being a walking suicide,” Cain continues. “Audiences know Jason as the foul-mouthed Jay in the Kevin Smith movies, but he’s got a sweet side that’s the perfect counterpoint to the darkness in our story.” Mewes’ Jay also made an appearance in Scream 3, and the actor’s genre credits additionally include R.S.V.P., Feast, The Tripper, Netherbeast Incorporated, Bitten and the upcoming Silent But Deadly.
