The Jester opens as John walks alone at night. A figure in a top hat and orange suit, the Jester appears and disappears behind him.
A young girl appears in an alley and again in front of him. He calls the now grown girl, his daughter Emma who is not happy to hear from him. The Jester confronts him and as John pleads for his life conjures up a noose and, using his tie to control it, hangs him.
At his funeral, we find out he has another daughter Jocelyn (Delaney White; Pooling Evidence) who he had after walking out on Emma and her mother. The Jester also puts in an appearance much to the dismay of a pair of gravediggers.

The Mean One, along with Mad Heidi and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was part of an unexpected crop of horror and exploitation films based on children’s tales that dropped last Christmas. Since Dr. Suess’ Grinch is still under copyright the makers of this film had to change a few names to bring us the tale of Cindy You-Know-Who and the residents of Newville’s battle against the evil green creature known as The Mean One.
Our story begins with a familiar flashback accompanied by the rhyming narration of Christopher Sanders but, in a twist, just as young Cindy (Saphina Chanadet; Balance of the Force) is about to change The Mean One’s attitude her mother appears and attacks him, getting herself killed in the process.

Written and directed by Eve Symington, Brut Force is a modern female-led film that is very much trying to capture the spirit of classic film noir and present it in a new way for a modern audience. Symington and her Dp Emilie Silvestri also do something remarkable – they manage to create a wonderful dichotomy between the noir elements of the film and the sun-soaked world of California’s wine country, the beautiful landscape bathed in golden sunshine hiding a dark world in its shadowy underbelly.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Batman (Matt Reeves)
Over the 80 years of his comic book, televised, and cinematic existence, Batman has always grappled with his secretive dual identity. Bruce Wayne hobnobs and toasts champagne with fellow philanthropic one-percenters during the day, while his Caped Crusader alter-ego attempts to clean up Gotham City and its never-ending crime problem at night, a particularly torturous method of dealing with childhood trauma. But in The Batman, director Matt Reeves’ moody and riveting addition to the canon, that binary is mostly absent. The cape and cowl isn’t so much a nocturnal costume as it is around-the-clock attire. – Jake K. (full review)

A handsomely shot, gorgeously scored film noir set in California wine country, Eve Symington’s début feature Brut Force draws on her family’s talents and features a strong lead performance from her sister, Lelia Symington, as troubled journalist Sloane. As it prepared for release on VoD, I connected with Eve to discuss it and began by asking about the location and what drew her to it.
“My father, who plays Arthur, lives in that area, so I've been spending time there for about ten years and I always thought it was so, so gorgeous,” she explains. “And I thought that the difference between the way that it looks and the reputation of wine country and then some of these social problems, which I wanted to examine more closely, was a really interesting dichotomy and ripe for a noir film.

"Welcome back to Santa Lucia, where it always smells like sour grapes." XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie film called Brut Force, a play on words as it's set in wine country. The neo-noir film is set around California's central coast wine country, playing like Chinatown for wine. Newly-fired reporter Sloane Sawyer reluctantly returns to her rural California hometown to investigate the harassment of local vineyard workers and uncorks a tangled web of crime & corruption behind wine country's shiny façade. The director explains: "beneath the surface of California's 'wine country' bubble complex histories, racism, class struggles, and moral grey areas, all of which makes this world ripe for a modern noir story. The lead character... is a modern, female take on a classic noir detective." The film stars Lelia Symington as Sloane, Tyler Posey, Vico Escorcia, and Patricia Velásquez. This doesn't look ...

Actress Amber Midthunder, who is a regular on the CW series Roswell, New Mexico and previously co-starred in FX’s Legion, stars in The Wheel, an indie feature, which she also produced. Steve Pink is the director and also produced the pic. Pink is known for films like Hot Tub Time Machine 1&2, 2014’s About Last Night, and co-wrote the original High Fidelity film. Midthunder co-stars alongside Taylor Gray, whose credits include Star Wars Rebels and American Princess. The Wheel centers on Albee and Walker, a couple on the verge of divorce. Married at 16, they’re now 24 and miserable. Albee wants out, while Walker wants to make it work – no matter the damage. Nelson Lee (Mulan), Bethany Anne Lind (Ozark), and Kevin Pasdon (New Amsterdam) round out the cast.
