Demi Lovato gets hitched to Jesse Williams in her cinematic new music video for “Tell Me You Love Me,”—or does she? The pair certainly have a bumpy ride on the way to the altar.
The Mark Pellington-directed clip begins with a rapid-fire montage of a giddy proposal—and the steamy celebration—before jealousy and doubt threaten to consume their relationship. But amidst the dramatic fighting, Lovato intones the song’s title.

Staying alive in the year 1455 was not an easy task.
As if the lack of medical advances and the whims of deadly diseases weren’t enough, “Castlevania,” the latest Netflix animated series from writer Warren Ellis, adds on the persistent spectre of bloodthirsty hellbeasts bent on destroying all of humankind.
It’s the ideal example of the series attempting to tap into universal themes to amp up the frights originally mined in the Konami video game series. This onscreen world might hold a special place for those who’ve been immersed since its premiere in 1986, but as a work of episodic storytelling, it takes much of its four episodes to firmly establish the kind of series it will be moving forward. (“Castlevania” was renewed for Season 2 the morning Season 1 debuted.)

Unshaven Comics has offered me too many moments of pure Trump-level pride. Selling hundreds of copies more than our friends at various comic cons through the sheer force of Kyle’s will. Breaking bread with industry legends. Seeing Stan Lee be escorted by Playboy models so he could roast the great John Romita while giving an award to his son. But none may be greater and pride-filling than officially teaching our first “Comic Book 101” class for our local park district.
In the not-too-distant-past, we’d offered a one day workshop for local kids through a small gallery. For a few hours, we broke down how comics are made and then sorta turned the kids loose to aimlessly draw and ask us questions. It was quaint. But we had bigger dreams.

The very first movie trailer debuted in November, 1913. It showed backstage rehearsal footage of an upcoming production of the musical The Pleasure Seekers. The actual play itself debuted the same month.
In contrast, today you can catch the sneak peak to the first look of the first cut of the promotional trailer of any given movie upwards of a full year before the actual film is released. How starved for content is our culture?
Think now, how literally days into pre-production of a given franchise the hype machine starts a’rollin’. When George Lucas and his menagerie sneezed a bit too loud, Entertainment Weekly and any other number of film blogs lit the net on fire. Speculation then is answered by some unseen specter of a source, second-handed, to an iffy-looking kid with a smartphone. And soon enough, Donald Glover is pitching to be young Lando.

I often receive puzzled looks when I tell folks that Unshaven Comics makes the trek from the southern burbs of Chicago to the New York Comic Con by car. I reassure them that if we could afford to ship an entire booth setup and merchandise to the Javits, convince ComicMix’s own Glenn Hauman to pick us up from La Guardia (a hell I wouldn’t wish on anyone, let alone our most gracious host), and then be beholden to said Haumans for most of our transportation needs, we would. But, rest assured, we’ve made the trip enough for me to admit I actually look forward to the nearly 14-hour jaunt across Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
In those middle-hours of driving, somewhere between lunch and arriving in New York, we found ourselves unpacking The Samurnauts as a concept. You ever want a first-class ride on the creative-process express?...

It’s apt that the horror genre is only a step up from pornography in the minds of critics, because whenever a porn star attempts to carve out a “mainstream” career, they usually end up in horror pictures.
You could explain that in several ways. You could side with the critics and say it’s because both genres wallow in the same gutter, and seguing from one exploitation movie to another isn’t really much of an achievement. Or you could say that it’s because horror is the most liberal genre, and therefore the most welcoming to performers who would elsewhere be held up to ridicule.
Each view has something going for it, depending on the movie you’re talking about. The nicest thing that can be said about Evil Breed: The Legend Of Samhain (2003), which features Ginger Lynn, Chasey Lain and Jenna Jameson, is that the girls all look good.

Canada is the home of national healthcare, maple syrup, politeness, Tim Horton's, and in what should be a rather interesting development, the expiration of the copyright on James Bond. io9 does a good job of breaking down how this came to be, but what it essentially means is that anyone, within Canadian borders, can reproduce and sell Ian Fleming's works, write new James Bond stories, or readapt what has already been published. The first reactions to the Jessica Jones pilot screening at Nycc made it clear that Marvel wasn't shying away from the darker, more mature elements of Brian Michael Bendis' source material - but now we have details of one scene in particular that's sure to surprise or even shock most fans. When we first meet Jones in the Alias comic she's engaging in... well, let's just say a very specific sex act with Luke Cage. It's become an infamous moment, with fans joking that as adult as Marvel seemed to be going with their Netflix shows, there was no way that scene would make it to the screen. Yeah... it did! Here's the breakdown courtesy of Vulture. Smash cut to Luke on top of Jessica in his bed, going at it with a sexual fury unlike anything Marvel (or DC, for that matter) has even come close to putting on screen.

Marvel and Netflix’s Jessica Jones will no doubt include several controversial scenes adapted straight from Brian Michael Bendis’ Alias comic series, but one in particular is bound to shock fans – many of whom used to joke that whatever else was shown, there was no way this particular moment would be used.
Initial reports from the Nycc screening of the first episode suggested Marvel had really taken things to an adult level with Jessica Jones, but details were kept to a minimum to avoid spoilers. Now though, Vulture has posted a breakdown of the scene that had the majority of the crowd in attendance gasping in disbelief.
When we first meet Jones in the comic, she’s in bed with Luke Cage, and the pair are… well, let’s just say they’re not having “conventional” sex. Here’s how Vulture describe the scene from the show.

As we steel ourselves for life after "Mad Men," there's one question that remains in focus two days later: What does that ending mean? The final sequence, and what it portends for our man Don Draper, has drawn a line in the sand for audiences. There are those cynical viewers who think Don has turned his enlightenment into yet another commodity, and there are those hopeful audiences who believe, as Indiewire's Ben Travers elegantly argues, "Don felt empathy, perhaps for the first time, and after a morning of meditation... Don tried to pass that feeling on to everyone through the only method he understands: advertising." According to a New York Times interview with Dave Itzkoff, Jon Hamm stands somewhere in the more "optimistic" camp. In the last scene of "Person to Person," we see Don sitting in lotus pose on the sunny edge of a cliff, finally locating a moment's...

It is written in the chronicles of our people that, long ago, in the days when the earth below and the sky above were as one, and the gods had not yet deserted the world of men, there was a film called The Fast and the Furious. And it is written that The Fast and the Furious begat 2 Fast 2 Furious, which begat The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, which begat Fast & Furious, which begat Fast Five, which begat Fast & Furious 6, although certain elders of the tribe insist that the latter film was actually titled Furious 6. Here's something unexpected! At the end of today's Legendary Pictures panel at Comic-Con, producer Thomas Tull introduced a trailer for a brand-new mystery project ... that turned out to be a sequel of sorts to King Kong. Not that any of us knew that as the trailer began: All we saw was a stormy, primeval-looking island, accompanied by some ominous narration, and since director Guillermo del Toro had left the stage, many people in the audience figured we were watching some sort of announcement teaser for del Toro's long-in-development passion project At the Mountains of Madness. (Still others around me guessed Jurassic World.) Then, as we pressed in on the island, we saw a giant monster roaring — and hey, is that King Kong? The X-Men movies are important. They make a lot of money and they helped create Superhero-Era Hollywood and they incepted a certain kind of lucrative career arc in the heads of a generation of young actors. (Do the franchise, take the money, spend a year on greenscreens and the press circuit pretending you understand anything that’s happening, try for the Oscar, repeat.)
And the X-Men movies are important to me. I grew up loving superhero comic books and I grew up loving movies. These two fascinations were not mutually exclusive; but now, more and more, they feel diametrically opposed.

I know we would all rather be watching the new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy instead of reading about it, but I'm so excited for the movie that I'll take what I can get! Yes, there’s another trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past, the anxiously awaited franchise mash-up which is technically a fourquel, a sequel, an interquel, and a prequel — not to mention the much-discussed possibility among cultural scientists that the film may technically be a requel, since it rewrites the franchise’s own internal history and may cover previously explored ground. Smash cut to: “Oh, I’m getting him a gift.” The rules do not apply to Leslie. Or, I guess, to Ben. They are literally the only two people celebrating this anniversary so … not sure why we have to go through the no-gift charade. But whatever makes the Knope-Wyatts happy! As we all know, Leslie is the queen of all things friendship: She out-thoughtfuls everyone with her incredible, heartwarming, yet also kind of compulsive and competitive thoughtfulness. One of the things that fascinates me about Leslie’s tendency to go over the top is that, while it comes from this warm place of wanting to make the people she loves feel valued and adored, there’s also this weird, dark side to it. Abel Whitman (Hess) is a director on the edge – the edge of the industry, the edge of society and the edge of insanity – and his films are universally panned by audiences and critics alike. Seeking solice in the arms of a stripper he calls his muse, Whitman gets involved in a car accident which takes her life and drives him completely insane. Inspired by the grisly aftermath of the crash and reasoning that his films have failed because the effects do not look real enough, Whitman sets out on a killing spree, harvesting organs and blood from his victims and using them to create realistic gore effects. When critics praise this new found realism, Whitman cannot help but continue his murderous ways – ways, it turns out, he is most adept in getting away with.

Producers Jeff Sackman and Michael Baker today announced that they will remake the horror classic Shivers, David Cronenberg's first feature film. That film, highlighted with a special screening at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, broke ground with its boundary-pushing sexuality and violence in its original release, nearly 40 years ago.
Shivers will be directed by award-winning Danish filmmaker Rie Rasmussen from a screenplay written by Ian Driscoll. Sackman and Baker will produce through their respective companies, Tajj Media and Bunk 11 Pictures. Working with them as executive producer is the film's original executive producer, André Link. Shivers will begin shooting in February 2014, with casting currently underway.
In Shivers, a genetically-engineered strain of parasites that turn people into violent, compulsive sex-addicts is released into a self-contained luxury apartment complex. The resident doctor attempts to find a cure before the infected, nymphomaniac inhabitants spread their legs - and the parasites.

It was only a matter of time before the "Amazing Spider-Man 2" footage screened at San Diego Comic-Con International leaked—and then it was only a matter of time before the footage got yanked. For fans lucky enough to catch the footage while it was live, you got to see a tinier and grainier version of what a few hundred people got to see on the big screen a few weeks ago. And since filming only wrapped a month ago, it's likely that we won't see a proper trailer for the film until the fall or even winter.
But even with only a few weeks of post-production under their belt, the "ASM2" team has pulled off quite a feat. The four minutes of footage conveys the sequel's new tone and show off plenty of great special effects moments—at least they were great from the phone-quality video that leaked.

[This three-part article contains many spoilers for the plot of Iron Man 3 (which is a great film, by the way). If you haven't seen it, I recommend that you go and do so, and then come back and read the article, which will explore themes of Meaning, Identity, and Relationality as expressed in Iron Man 3.]
Part 2: Identity
Part 1 of this article explored how Iron Man 3 explores the theme of meaning, particularly using the metaphor of fortune cookies, representing things unable to bear the weight of meaning placed on them. If you are what you eat, then eating things that are "hollow, full of lies, and leave a bad taste in the mouth" is not a healthy diet, and doesn't make for a healthy person...
(Ben Kingsley as) The Mandarin, as set up in the trailer and earlier in the film (and also apparently in the comics), is a very dramatic, theatrical villain, and thus very effective, especially in a comic book realm such as this. As such, the Mandarin reveal – that Ben Kingsley's character is actually a drug-addicted actor called Trevor – is startling, pulling the rug out from under the audience's feet. While amusing, it could be considered gut-punchingly iconoclastic; as if...

We’ve been on hiatus. I think that means I’ve been lazy, but to you it probably only felt like moments. Seconds even. Maybe you’ve been chomping at the bit awaiting the arrival of the latest installment of 1980x. Maybe you forgot about me.. well I didn’t forget about you dear readers. I got soooo busy reviewing goddamn movies that I forgot about what it is that I love about writing about ideas. Concepts. I forgot that analysis is anal with a few letters scrawled at the end to make it look fancy. Not that there’s anything wrong with anal… which brings us to tonight’s conversation on It Came From 1980x. Let’s talk about the psycho-sexual, munging and cunnilinguini of Brian Yuzna’s 1989 satire horror gross out, Society.

Fango got some exclusive words with Combs about Would You Rather, which co-stars Prom Night’s Brittany Snow, C.H.U.D.’s John Heard and Smash Cut’s Sasha Grey.
Fangoria: How did you come to be a part of Would You Rather?
Jeffrey Combs: Would You Rather came out of the woodwork in a way, although through a fortuitous route. One of my oldest and best friends I’ve known since high school, his son’s best friend happened to be one of the associate producers for [the movie] as it was getting put together. They were looking for someone to play Shepard Lambrick, and he brought up my name. I had a meeting with the director, David Guy Levy, and we were off to the races.
Fang: What were your initial thoughts when you read the script?
Combs: I thought it was really finely crafted: Taut, motivated, nothing that didn’t progress one point to another.

It was about 2:30 in the afternoon yesterday when my phone rang. The Caller ID was blocked, so I picked up the receiver and said, "Hello?"
"I'm looking for Mike Ryan," a raspy yet oddly familiar voice replied. "This is?" I said, sheepishly, hoping that our conversation wouldn't be followed by a knock at my door and a summons. "Hey, this is Bruce Willis," the voice responded. This would have been a perfectly reasonable start to an interview ... if I had known that I was interviewing Bruce Willis.
The day before, I had been told that Bruce Willis might be available for interviews in support of his new time-travel thriller, "Looper." That's it. Smash cut: He's calling my cell phone with no warning. (Apparently, he decided to bypass the studio press office and handle this round of interviews personally, John McClane-style.) Normally, I would have prepared pretty intensely for an interview like this.

If there is one thing this spring's "Silent House" with Elizabeth Olsen, this Friday's "The House At The End Of The Street" with Jennifer Lawrence, and next year's "Mama" with Jessica Chastain proves, it's that Hollywood loves getting their young female talent in tank tops/low cut shirts and then having them run around screaming. And "The Hunger Games" star will do just that this weekend. A new clip has dropped for "The House At The End Of The Street," which proves that if you're running away from somebody, it's usually a good idea to leave the house entirely rather than risk jumping in a car without the keys. But alas! Poor decisions aren't made without Plot Consequences, and it seems our plucky young heroine makes a rather interesting discovery before Smash Cut Hashtag! It all looks pretty rote and actually pretty terribly lensed, with enough shaky cam for five...

What I love most about Damages is its ability to create constant tension. The show’s history proves that it is capable of all sorts of shocks, so we know there are plenty of perilous situations that can arise. However, what also proves to be just as heart pounding are the building blocks along the way. There’s just a sense of foreboding dread with every week; things cannot possibly ever end well. It’s why a deposition scene at the end of “Failure is Failure” can be just as tense as Tom Shayes’s murder in season three. It’s why a job interview seems as sinister as Arthur Frobisher’s crooked cop hitman. Damages continues to make the legal world seem five stops past ruthless.

There are moments during certain romantic comedies when you might find yourself throwing up your hands and growling, “come on!” under your breath. And with good reason: the improbability of plotlines and inconsistencies of characters are enough to drive even the sappiest of us screaming from the theaters, scouring the streets for the realism and even cynicism that seems to have deserted us over the course of the film. “Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding,” from director Bruce Beresford (“Driving Miss Daisy,” “Tender Mercies”), is not one of these kinds of rom-coms. At least, not entirely. Though wildly predictable from the outset, and undoubtedly sentimental in its bits of hippie-dippie, lovey-dovey wisdom, the movie doesn’t stray too far from the real world, and ultimately drives home an honest and applicable moral about accepting your family, warts and all.
The film wastes no time getting its story off the ground. Dialogue filters in over a black screen.

For all of us here at Fangoria, the passing of actor/songwriter David Hess is a dark day indeed. Hess has been such a presence in horror culture from his work in Wes Craven’s landmark Last House On The Left, to other equally rough pictures as Ruggero Deodato’s House By The Edge Of The Park and Pasquale Campinile's Hitch Hike to his most recent picture, chewing scenery in Lee Demarbre’s Smash Cut.

It is with a heavy heart today that we report on the death of horror genre actor David Hess.
News of the actor/musician/director's death came via Twitter, Facebook and reportedly from one of his Faccebook pages where his children are said to have posted the following statement: "It is with great sadness that we have said our last goodbyes to our beloved dad and friend to all. David passed away peacefully last night. The Mad Hessian lives on in his family, friends, and all of his devoted fans. Sing a song in celebration of his life."
Hess, a New Yorker born in 1942, landed on the horror scene with Wes Craven's cult classic The Last House on the Left in which he portrayed the malicious killer known as "Krug." From there, he would go on to star in Swamp Thing, The House on the Edge of the Park,...

Legendary horror actor David Hess has passed away at the age of 69. Hess is best known for his roles in The Last House on the Left and House on the Edge of the Park, as well as starring in Smash Cut. Donny and I were just talking about contacting him for an interview for his Christmas slasher To All a Good Night.
The image above is a few years back at the La Weekend of Horrors, where I got a picture with David and Italian director Ruggero Deodato.
Rest in Peace.
His family updated his Facebook with the sad news:

News is slamming Twitter that David Hess, best known to horror fans as "Krug Stillo" in Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left, and star of House on the Edge of the Park and Swamp Thing, has passed away today. He was 69. Hess was to star in The House on the Edge of the Park Part II and Manson Rising, and more recently can be seen in Smash Cut. Hess was born in New York City. Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Glenn already weighed in on Pixar’s latest, but I couldn’t help seeing for myself and now writing my own take on their twelfth.
Let’s cut right to the chase. Cars 2 is a disappointing retread that lacks the luster and the fun of the first, and feels like a means to sell racecar beds and other Disney merchandise.
It’s opening introduces a new character, British undercover agent Finn McMissile (voiced by Michael Caine), and a taste of the flighty espionage adventure to come. The monocled Professor Z and his henchmen, a gang of cars fed up with being called “lemons,” are hatching an evil plot when they spot a blue Aston Martin dangling oh-so-inconspicuously over their heads. A chase ensues (one of many off the racetrack), and McMissile narrowly escapes, presumed dead by his pursuers. ”With Finn McMissile gone, who can stop us now?” Professor Z asks rhetorically.
