Following up her visually staggering debut Beginning, Dea Kulumbegashvili returned last year with her second feature April, which picked up the Special Jury Prize at Venice, and will now arrive in theaters, of course, in April. Following the journey of an obstetrician who offers abortions to local women, it’s a mesmerizing, harrowing odyssey that was also a selection at TIFF, NYFF, and Sundance. Ahead of its April 25 release from Metrograph Pictures, the first U.S. trailer and poster have now arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, acclaimed director Dea Kulumbegashvili (Beginning) returns with her latest boundary pushing work, April. Skilled obstetrician Nina is accused of malpractice when a baby dies during delivery. The ensuing investigation threatens to expose Nina’s illegal sideline: offering abortions to local women. T.S. Eliot said April was the cruelest month, but that’s hardly the case for this April 2025, when Dea Kulumbegashvili’s shattering new drama “April” finally opens.
Ok, to be fair, “April” is a cruel film, set in a remote Georgian village, where a revered obstetrician is accused of malpractice and ostracized by her townspeople after a baby dies on the delivery table. Meanwhile, she provides illegal abortions for the village’s broken, young, and helpless women. IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer below for the film, which won a Venice Film Festival 2024 special prize from a jury headed up by none other than Isabelle Huppert. Rising distributor Metrograph Pictures, which also operates a brick-and-mortar theater in Lower Manhattan, opens the film in select cities on April 25.
“April” reunites Kulumbegasvhili with actress Ia Sukhitashvili, who starred in the director’s 2020 breakout “Beginning,” about religious extremism and abuse, also set in a Georgian village.

TurtleMe’s masterpiece The Beginning After the End is finally getting an anime and I cannot help but feel excited about it. The isekai manhwa isn’t a run-of-the-mill story meant to be snubbed. It stands out beautifully through its themes, plot and so much more. But there’s a catch to that as well.

Lately, there have been concerns regarding “mid-animation” by most fans, and it makes sense. No one wants an opus to be reduced to mockery, but I’m willing to overlook this issue. That is if the makers choose to stay true to the key essence of the story and not ruin it completely.
The Beginning After the End is top-tier for this reason
The Beginning After the End or Tbate as some would call it, isn’t your usual Isekai manhwa.

It’s been nearly two months since Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- opened in Japanese theaters. It has become a massive hit, becoming the second-highest-grossing theatrical outing for the franchise. That massive hit status was solidified today when the official X (formerly Twitter) account announced that the screenings surpassed 3 billion yen (US$20.04 million) in just 49 days on the back of over 1.8 million tickets sold. This makes Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- only the second advanced theatrical release of a TV anime to pass 3 billion yen after the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba To the Swordsmith Village released in 2023. -Beginning- has also passed To the Hashira Training at the Japanese box office. It is also the 5th highest-grossing theatrical release of the year so far. Popular webtoon The Beginning After the End, is all set to receive its anime debut in April 2025. Fans of the manhwa had been pretty excited about the release, that is until more and more details were revealed about the upcoming adaptation. As I keep going through more and more promotional materials, a deep-seated fear inside me seems to be coming true.

The Mobile Suit Gundam franchise is finding new life in the 2020s, especially in the form of its anime. Now, one anime that's over a decade old is joining a free streaming service.
The somewhat controversial Mobile Suit Gundam Age is now available to stream on Tubi TV, making it the second Gundam anime to join the platform. It's one of the many disparate anime in the franchise that has finally found a streaming home, increasing its overall awareness. This also sets a noticeable trend for Tubi with regard to the property as a whole.

This review contains mild spoilers for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-. Proceed with caution.
In the wake of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury's success, it's safe to say that the Gundam franchise is stronger than ever. However, this is only really true for the premiere mecha anime franchise's Alternate Universes (Au). The original Universal Century (Uc), which chronicled the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, has been stuck in limbo for the better part of the last 20 years. The Uc's new series and films only fill in the timeline's gaps, while not advancing the overall story forward.
But since the war ended both in-universe and in the real world, there's really nowhere else for the Uc to go. Thankfully, this stagnant status quo is about to change with the upcoming anime series Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, which began with the compilation film...

U.S. viewers finally had the opportunity to view the movie in theaters this weekend thanks to its Gkids release, with the film premiering stateside on Feb. 28, 2025.

The Monkey marked the second-biggest opening for Neon, but the film simply didn’t make enough money to outperform Captain America: Brave New World. The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe repeated as the No. 1 movie at the box office over the weekend with an estimated $28.2 million domestically. However, filmmaker and star Osgood "Oz" Perkins' The Monkey still managed to bring in $14.2 million to secure second place.
Captain America 4 dropped a staggering 68% between its first and second weekends of release, but the Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford-led superhero flick still managed to attract audiences, particularly on Saturday, Feb. 22. That marked the only day over the weekend that Sam Wilson (Mackie) and President “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk’s (Ford) film managed to bring in more than $10 million ($12.8 million). Now, in fairness, it's been a rocky road for the MCU over the last couple of years at the box office.

In a surprising turn for Japan’s film industry, the highest-grossing cinema release of 2025 so far is not a feature film but a re-edited compilation of episodes from an upcoming TV series. The Mobile Suit Gundamfranchise has inarguably conquered many mediums, including those of anime and plastic model kits. Now, it's giving live-action films another go, with the planned Hollywood movie moving forward in a new production update.
Via Japanese news site Oricon, the forward momentum for the Gundam movie comes as parent company Bandai announces further developments. The film will be helmed by a production company that worked on numerous blockbuster hits in the past two decades, including the Denis Villeneuve Dune films -- a science fiction pedigree that will be needed to do the concept justice on the big screen as Bandai seeks to expand the brand.

The official YouTube channel for singer-songwriter Kenshi Yonezu began streaming a music video for his latest digital single song, "Plazma," which is now featured as the theme song for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- . The song was written, composed and arranged by Yonezu himself. The video includes no spoilers of the anime's story. Kenshi Yonezu "Plazma" Music Video Visual creator Sho Yanagisawa , known for his work on various TV commercials, served as the director of the music video as his first collaboration work with Yonezu. "The phrase 'initial impulse' was particularly memorable in the discussions with Yonezu-san about the music video," said Yanagisawa. "From there, a single picture of the moment when a girl encounters 'something' that she will be crazy about for the rest of her life came to mind. If we could express this picture using an underwater set and an ultra-analog illusion technique, it would create a chemistry with the music.

In the world of independent RPGs, Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated stands out as a charming remaster. It invites players into a strange, post-apocalyptic world full of zombies. As Dem, a mute skeleton with a rich inner life, players navigate a narrative that skillfully mixes humor with traditional RPG tropes, creating a nostalgic and new experience.
The narrative and gameplay of the game go well together. Because of the game’s unique combat system, enemies get stronger over time, forcing players to plan and move quickly. This mechanic reflects how the stakes are rising along Dem’s journey, reinforcing how urgent each meeting is. Exploration is also very important because it encourages conversations with NPCs that enrich the story and let players make decisions that affect their experience.

Includes Spoilers for Dune: Prophecy season 1!
The Dune franchise is kicking off in full force in 2024, with Dune: Prophecy airing on HBO and Dune: Part 2 released in cinemas, both telling a similar story. On the Dune timeline, the HBO prequel series is set 10,000 years before Denis Villeneuve's feature films, examining the Imperium at a much earlier stage, when known factions like the Bene Gesserit and the noble houses were in vastly different positions in terms of political standings. Still, ideas from Frank Herbert's original Dune novel are always prevalent, connecting the titles with similar themes.
One similarity between the two titles is that House Corrino reigns over the Imperium. Mark Strong plays Emperor Javicco Corrino in Dune: Prophecy's cast, while Christopher Walken portrayed Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV in the cinematic adaptation. Shaddam is a character taken directly from Frank Herbert's original Dune novel, and Denis Villeneuve's...

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball has made incredible accomplishments over the past four decades and Dragon Ball Daima’s release has helped elevate the franchise to even greater heights. Dragon Ball Daima has done exceptional work with how it’s taken old ideas and reinvented them in fresh ways. Daima has incorporated Saibamen, featured Dabura’s extended family, and provided illuminating details on Namekians and the Supreme Kai.
Dragon Ball Daima already has a lot in common with Dragon Ball Gt and fans have been curious regarding just how much from the polarizing anime-only sequel will get referenced in the new series. Dragon Ball Gt features dozens of original characters who have been resigned to obscurity because of the anime’s non-canonical status. Next month, the latest installment of the iconic Mobile Suit Gundam franchise premieres. Judging by the promotional material, the mecha at the story's core is a far cry from the classic Gundams that fans may be used to from past installments of the beloved series. Instead, its design bears a striking resemblance to one of the lanky mechs from Neon Genesis Evangelion, a similarity that might leave longtime Gundam fans doing a double-take.

In retrospect, you do have to feel a bit sorry for the Sega Saturn, despite Sega shooting themselves in the foot during its lifespan. While the Saturn’s 1994 launch in Japan was deemed a success, the North American launch the following year was hampered by inexplicable decisions that ultimately culminated in the Saturn’s early demise in the region. It’s a shame, as there were some quality titles that could go up against what was going on for the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 at the time, even if some of them were Japan exclusive. That also included a number of horror titles, some of which are bona fide classics. So, on the 30th anniversary of the Saturn’s launch, here’s a selection of those titles. Obviously, some are ports from other systems, but that shouldn’t stop you from seeking them out if you’re a collector for the...

And is the flouting of laws and regulations a reasonable price to pay for change in a democratic society?”

Playing a boxer seems to be a prerequisite for an actor in their journey to become an action star. Will Smith played Muhammed Ali in Ali while Mark Wahlberg played Micky Ward in The Fighter. Though Sylvester Stallone had his breakthrough with the Rocky franchise, the greatest boxer in Hollywood reportedly even bested him.

While Drago was one of the most dangerous opponents that Rocky Balboa ever faced, Lundgren himself was reportedly no less, punching Stallone in the chest on his insistence, which reportedly led him to be hospitalized.

As a not-quite-open-world RPG, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is told entirely through quests. Its story is made up of a series of (mostly) linear quests that take players to various corners of the Dragon Age map. In between, players can spend time getting to know their traveling companions in a series of companion quests, or simply helping locals and factions with shorter, less earth-shattering side quests. April had its world premiere this year at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, where it was met with critical acclaim. Audiences will also get to see it at film festivals in Toronto, San Sebastian, and New York this fall. Kulumbegashvili’s films don’t shy away from difficulty—April delves deep into traditions that curtail women’s freedoms in rural Georgia.
The film follows an obstetrician named Nina who provides secret abortions, despite the controversy and risks involved. With political and religious opposition strong in the country, legal abortion is accessible mainly in name only for many Georgian women. Kulumbegashvili handles this sensitive topic with care, inviting conversations about empowering...
