Rick & Morty Creator's New Show Proves How Good The Simpsons Actually Still Is
Image
The Simpsons' recent seasons have improved considerably, winning over both critics and fans, making it one of the stronger animated adult comedies on television. The fact that new shows, even with notable talents like Dan Harmon, are struggling to gain hype emphasizes The Simpsons' impressive comeback. Despite its age, The Simpsons' formula continues to work, allowing it to outperform newer shows and earn more acclaim than even Dan Harmon's new series.

While The Simpsons season 35 might not be as good as the show’s best outings, the creator of Rick and Morty’s new animated Fox sitcom shows just how good the series still is today. It was no major surprise when The Simpsons seasons 30 through 33 struggled with critics and fans alike. The show’s so-called Golden Age ended around season 11, a full 20 years before season 32 began. The Simpsons paved the way for much of the modern adult animation landscape but,...

10 Underappreciated TV Shows That Were Ahead Of Their Time
Image
While some television shows arrive at the perfect time, others are destined to be forgotten because they aired a little too early for mainstream appreciation. In recent decades, many underrated television shows have been reappraised by critics and viewers alike. While Arrested Development and Firefly were critical darlings through their original runs, both shows barely made any impact on the cultural zeitgeist. However, in the years since they ended, cult hits like these two shows received their flowers as showrunners, writers, and reviewers praised their prescient work. In Arrested Development's case, this even left to a Netflix revival.

As such, it is tough to call these shows “underappreciated.” While they may have been missed by audiences upon their initial release, Firefly’s impact and Arrested Development’s influence on the sitcom genre are both pretty considerable a few decades later. Underappreciated is a more accurate term for shows that...

Fox Developing Family Comedy ‘Home Economics’ From Michael Colton, John Aboud, The Tannenbaum Co. & Lionsgate
Fox has given a script commitment plus penalty to Home Economics, a single-camera family comedy form writers Michael Colton and John Aboud, producers Eric and Kim Tannenbaum (Two And A Half Men) and Lionsgate TV.

Written by Colton and Aboud, Home Economics, inspired by Colton’s family, uses sibling rivalry to explore the most taboo but also the most relatable of subjects: money. The series follows three adult siblings: one in the 1 percent, one middle-class, and one barely holding on.

Colton and Aboud executive produce with Kim and Eric Tannenbaum via The Tannenbaum Company. Jason Wang is co-executive producer. Fox co-produces with The Tannenbaum Company and Lionsgate TV.

Home Economics is the latest sale The Tannenbaum Co. under its overall deal with Lionsgate TV. The list includes Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, an hourlong musical dramedy from Austin Winsberg, Paul Feig and Universal Music Group at NBC.

Watch: One More Trailer for 'Penguins of Madagascar' Rejects Nature
"Tiny and helpless, the baby penguins are frozen with fear." Who would have ever thought that Werner Herzog would lend his voice to DreamWorks Animation film? It sounds like an impossible task, and yet here we are with the filmmaker seemingly parodying himself as a documentary director shooting footage of the Penguins of Madagascar as young ones. But then we're brought up to speed with the Arctic birds as top notch spies, and that's when a new adventure begins. There's some childish silliness, but there's also some clever writing here, and that's from someone who has never really enjoyed these characters. Watch! Here's the new trailer for Penguins of Madagascar from DreamWorks Animation: Don't forget about the teaser trailer and previous theatrical trailer for Penguins of Madagascar too. The Penguins of Madagascar is directed by Eric Darnell (Madagascar franchise) and Simon J. Smith (Bee Movie) and written by John Aboud...

Watch: Birds on a Mission in New 'Penguins of Madagascar' Trailer
As someone who hasn't really enjoyed the Madagascar films much, after seeing some footage from the DreamWorks Animation spin-off at Comic-Con a couple weeks ago, the Penguins of Madagascar doesn't actually look half bad. Now a new trailer shows off more of the action adventure that sees the titular Arctic birds leading a double life as spies, now forced to team up with a sect of agents known as North Wind (led by a wolf voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). We also get some glimpses of John Malkovich as the octopus villain Dr. Octavius Brine. I might actually be looking forward to this one in the fall. Watch below! Here's the new trailer for DreamWorks Animation's Penguins of Madagascar from Apple: You can also watch the first teaser trailer for Penguins of Madagascar right here. The Penguins of Madagascar is directed by Eric Darnell (Madagascar franchise) and Simon J. Smith...

Danger & Espionage in the First Trailer for 'Penguins of Madagascar'
With the release of How to Train Your Dragon 2 this weekend, DreamWorks Animation is ready to get the hype machine started on their spin-off The Penguins of Madagascar. The animation studio just decided to move up the release of the film to November, swapping dates with their original film Home, and now we finally get a taste of the comedic spy adventure. Benedict Cumberbatch teams up with the penguins as a wolf named Agent Classified as part of a spy sect called North Wind. There's no sign of John Malkovich as the villainous Dr. Octavius Brine yet. If you don't like Madagascar, this probably isn't for you. Watch now! Here's the first trailer for The Penguins of Madagascar, originally from Moviefone: The Penguins of Madagascar is directed by Eric Darnell (Madagascar franchise) and Simon J. Smith (Bee Movie) and written by John Aboud and Michael Colton ("Sit Down Shut Up,...

First Trailer for DreamWorks’ The Penguins of Madagascar
The PWe’ve seen them in the trilogy of Madagascar films, we’ve seen them on their own TV show, and now the Penguins of Madagascar are about to have their big screen debut.

Previously due to be released next spring, DreamWorks recently announced that The Penguins of Madagascar and Home would be switching release dates, putting Skipper and co. in cinemas a full four months earlier.

There’s just over five months left on the clock now before the film’s arrival, and the studio has debuted a great first trailer online.

Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, John Dimaggio, and Christopher Knights all reprise their roles as the leading quartet from the original Madagascar films, Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and Private.

And joining them for the ride this time will be Benedict Cumberbatch, John Malkovich, Ken Jeong, Annet Mahendru, and Peter Stormare.

Mitch Hurwitz Signs Multi-Year Deal With Netflix
When Mitch Hurwitz and Netflix first hooked up in 2013 – for new episodes of his award-winning show, Arrested Development – it seemed like the perfect match. Though he started out working for regular TV networks, on series such as The Golden Girls and The John Larroquette Show, those standard broadcasting channels – with all their restrictive regulations – were never able to provide him with the platform he needed to really let his flag fly. Even Arrested Development – the creation for which he is most famous – had to fight to remain seated at the Fox table. Thankfully, those days are gone now that Hurwitz has signed a multi-year deal with the streaming market leader - giving the writer/producer/director the space he needs to fully unfurl his creative wings.

When Arrested Development was cancelled in 2007, it’s highly revered main cast – Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Tony Hale, Jeffrey Tambor, Alia Shawkat, Michael Cera,...

First poster for Disney's Wreck-It Ralph, starring John C. Reilly, Jane Lynch, Jack McBrayer, Sarah Silverman, Jamie Elman. In the movie, Wreck-It Ralph (voice of Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game's perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes... so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan -- win a medal -- but soon wrecks everything, and accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph's only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Silverman), a young troublemaking "glitch" from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. Arrested Development is back but shouldn't we just let cancelled shows die?
What's behind the clamour for more Veronica Mars and Entourage? Could it be their newly unemployed makers suddenly having time to tweet?

Soon after Arrested Development went off the air in 2006, the show's creator, Mitch Hurwitz, announced tentative plans to make a movie following the exploits of the Bluth family. Over the next five years, Hurwitz would remain optimistic about the progress of the feature but reticent too. Many believed it would never happen, but then earlier this month Hurwitz made public his intentions not only to release the film in 2013 but to produce a new miniseries which would lead up to it. Now that it looms on the horizon, though, the question has to be asked: do we really need an Arrested Development movie?

Don't get me wrong: the sheer tonnage of gags, its rich seam of characterisation, and ability to flip from the absurd and profane to the...

Playlist Favorite Emma Forrest Will Pen Script Mitch Hurwitz hasn't been able to catch a break in the last few years. The creator of the much-missed sitcom classic "Arrested Development" has had a string of pilots that never made it past the pilot stage (including Us-set remakes of "The Thick Of It" and "Absolutely Fabulous"), while his two shows that did make it to air, the animation "Sit Down Shut Up" and the Will Arnett vehicle "Running Wilde," were swiftly cancelled (principally, it should be said, because neither was much good). Meanwhile, the rumor mill on a potential "Arrested Development"…...

Mitch Hurwitz Says Watch Running Wilde If You Want An Arrested Development Movie
It would be pretty much impossible for anyone to make something that tops the artistic brilliance of Arrested Development, but that show's creator Mitch Hurwitz has struggled to make something even half as funny. His animated series Sit Down Shut Up disappeared after only a few episodes, and his latest effort Running Wilde-- despite the presence of Ad alums Will Arnett and David Cross-- hasn't garnered much critical love either. All this is happening, of course, while rumors about a possible Arrested Development movie run rampant, proving that what we really want from Hurwitz is more Bluths, and we want it now. Now Hurwitz may have found a way to use that movie as leverage; in an interview with a The New York Times Hurwitz basically said that only with a successful series behind him can he get started on the Ad movie: .The hope has been that...

Hurwitz and Arnett Plan Second Reunion
Mitch Hurwitz, creator/executive producer of Fox’s Arrested Development, and Will Arnett, one of the stars of the Emmy-winning series, are teaming for a new single-camera comedy. The project is being setup at Fox and will be produced by Jim Vallely, another Development vet. The project, which has received a script commitment, is being written by Hurwitz, Arnett and Vallely. It stars Arnett as a rich Beverly Hills jackass who falls in love with a charitable tree-hugging woman who can't stand his lifestyle or values. The untitled comedy marks the second post-Development collaboration for Hurwitz, Arnett and Vallely. The trio all worked together on the short lived animated series Sit Down Shut Up, which managed seven episodes before Fox gave it the axe. Hurwitz and Vallely won two 2005 Emmys for penning the Righteous Brothers episode of Development. Arnett earned Emmy nominations for his role as part-time magician Gob Bluth...

Weekly TV Wrap Up - May 14th, 2009
Today’s Weekly TV Wrap Up will have a little One Tree Hill (Something a bit new, but a reader asked about the show.), some more on Dollhouse after the finale and Lie To Me news. We also touch on David E. Kelley’s disappointment, the dumping of a few shows by NBC and how Fox seems to be treating Ronald D. Moore’s Virtuality just like Dollhouse, but worse - If you can imagine that. I also have some David Tennant news for you.

Despite the season finales, it’s a bit of a quiet week for me. Of course, I have the TV ratings from last week and a bit of a surprise at the end of the post, if you make it that far.

Shall we get on with it?

One Tree Hill (Might Be Considered Spoilers)

It looks as if Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton...
