‘Sting’ Review
Image
Stars: Alyla Browne, Penelope Mitchell, Ryan Corr, Jett Berry, Kade Berry, Noni Hazlehurst, Robyn Nevin, Danny Kim, Silvia Colloca, Jermaine Fowler | Written and Directed by Kiah Roache-Turner

Sting is the new film from Australian writer/director Kiah Roache-Turner, the man behind the Mad Max meets Dawn of the Dead films Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and its sequel Wyrmwood: Apocalypse as well as the over-the-top ghost hunting film Nekrotronic. All three of them were fun films that made good use of a small budget, so a big bug movie seemed like a good fit for his skills.

This time out, he’s traded his apocalyptic scenarios for the goings-on in the apartment building where an alien spider egg comes to rest after a trip through Earth’s atmosphere. It hatches, and its occupant is found by Charlotte, who dubs the creature Sting,

Charlotte is a rebellious twelve-year-old who lives there...

The Time Is Right To Remake Stephen King's Worst Movie Adaptation
Image
Stephen King regrets directing Maximum Overdrive, admitting it was a failure & apologizing for the bad experience. The film's failure was due to King's lack of experience in directing & poor production team choices. A remake of Maximum Overdrive could succeed now due to modern techno-horror trends and a more experienced team.

In the era of remakes, especially in the horror genre, the worst movie adaptation of a Stephen King story can finally get a chance to succeed. Stephen King’s novels and short stories have been a source of inspiration for many artists for decades. Many of King’s works have been adapted to film and TV, some even more than once, but not all of these adaptations have found the same success as their source material. Stephen King’s first published novel, Carrie, was also the first to get a film adaptation, and since then, many of his stories have been brought to life.

Children of the Corn: Trick or Treat Studios accepting pre-orders for Isaac and Malachi figures
Image
Next year will mark the 40th anniversary of director Fritz Kiersch’s 1984 Stephen King adaptation Children of the Corn (watch it Here) – but the folks at Trick or Treat Studios are getting the celebration started early. They’re already accepting pre-orders for a two-pack of action figures based on the characters Isaac and Malachi! An image of the action figures can be seen at the bottom of this article. The two-pack can be pre-ordered at This Link, where more images of the figures can be found.

The action figures are expected to start shipping out in just a couple months, on September 15th.

Scripted by George Goldsmith and based on a King short story, Children of the Corn has the following synopsis: As physician Burt Stanton and his girlfriend Vicky drive across the Midwest to his new job, their trip comes to a sudden halt when they encounter the body...

9 Horror Franchises With Only One Good Movie
Image
Horror franchises are infamous for lasting much longer than they should, but it's still surprising to see just how many of the genre’s most well-known series only have one good movie to their name. It does not take a lot to keep a horror franchise alive. While a science-fiction or fantasy series might require a large budget for each new installment, horror movies are famously cheap to produce. As a result, successful horror movies can spawn franchises with as many as 10 or more sequels, reboots, and remakes.

Not every horror franchise can last forever. Some box office bombs killed horror franchises before they could even begin. However, the low-cost, high-profit nature of the horror genre means that a lot of series continue to pump out inexpensive entries long after critics have soured on their output. Even though 1984’s Children of the Corn was written off by reviewers as a lesser Stephen King adaptation,...

Stephen King's Desperation Is in Need of a Remake
Image
Another day, another Stephen King movie adaptation, and with The Boogeyman recently frightening audiences in theaters, the phrase seems all the more fitting. Although many of King's horror novels have been finding a way to the big screen since 1976's Carrie, it seems like the past decade has been a significant uptick of content, including brand-new adaptions and remakes of past movies. This new King era has been hit or miss, especially in the remakes department. While It, a two-part remake of the original 1990 miniseries, found new life in its second go around, other recent films like Firestarter and Children of the Corn failed to improve their mediocre precursors. Still, with remakes and reboots all the rage, there is one movie that desperately deserves another chance -- Desperation.

Desperation follows a group of people traveling through the Nevada desert who have the misfortune of getting pulled over by Collie Entragian,...

This Stephen King Story Should Get an Adaptation Next
Image
The Boogeyman directed by Rob Savage is out now in theaters. It is far from the first short story or novella by Stephen King to be adapted as a feature film, the likes of which include acclaimed movies like Stand by Me and The Shawshank Redemption. The Boogeyman joins the ranks of many Stephen King adaptations from the collection Night Shift, one of the more famous being Children of the Corn. However, all of these King adaptations only skim the surface of his many, many short stories that have yet to be adapted into feature films. One horrifying foray into cosmic body horror is his short story "I Am the Doorway," which needs to be adapted into a feature film.

6 Robert Englund Horror Movies You Can Stream on Screambox Now!
Image
Happy #RobertEnglundDay!

About one third of the 150+ acting credits accumulated over the course of Robert Englund’s 50-year career fall under the horror genre. Screambox is streaming five of them, along with the all-new documentary, Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story.

Here are six Robert Englund movies you can watch on Screambox now…

Galaxy of Terror

Before moving to Elm Street, Englund went to space for 1981’s Galaxy of Terror, the first of two back-to-back Alien knock-offs produced by Roger Corman. The film follows a ragtag spaceship crew on a rescue mission to a barren planet, where they encounter a deadly creature. In a slight twist on Ridley Scott’s sci-fi/horror classic, Galaxy of Terror uses its victims’ own fears against them — which, incidentally, is similar to Freddy’s modus operandi.

Englund plays the ship’s second technical officer, Ranger, but he’s not the only notable...

Review: The Boogeyman [Monte’s Take]
Image
One of my first encounters with the iconic Stephen King was through a collection of short stories from the 1978 novel "Night Shift." Within the terror-filled pages lies an assortment of King's early efforts, nightmare-inducing encounters with various creatures, terrible humans, and anomalies of nature. Many of these stories have been adapted for television, "Sometimes They Come Back," and film, "Children of the Corn" and "The Mangler." Director Rob Savage, who helmed the ingenious pandemic-influenced entity story "Host," tackles King's tale of Lester Billings and his encounter with a monster-in-the-closet with "The Boogeyman."

"The Boogeyman" opens with a scary scene of old-school horror filmmaking; it proves that familiar tropes, when organized with the proper care and attention, can still induce terror and the fear of the dark. The film focuses on the Harper family, teenager Sadie (Sophie Thatcher), younger sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair), and their therapist father, Will (Chris Messina...

Stephen King's Awful 4-Year Movie Streak Finally Ends With The Boogeyman
Image
The Boogeyman has revived Stephen King adaptations after an awful four-year streak. The new film is loosely based on King's 1978 short story and follows a teenage girl haunted by a monster after losing her mother in a car accident. Like King's other stories, The Boogeyman delves into traumatic experiences and how they affect the characters who've endured them. King has never been a fan of mindless horror, and each of his stories holds a deeper message, though, on the surface, they might seem like typical scary stories. Even It, following a killer clown, holds a crucial message about overcoming fear.

Unfortunately, not all of King's adaptations have correctly portrayed his messages. King's greatest criticism of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is that it left out the message in his book. King compared the film to a nice car with no engine and dispised how Kubrick ignored his message about addiction...

New Stephen King Horror Movie's Box Office Is His Best In 4 Years Since The Shining's Sequel
Image
The Boogeyman has earned the highest opening weekend for a Stephen King movie in years. Based on the King short story of the same name, the Rob Savage movie follows a family who is tormented by a mysterious entity who lurks in the darkness of their home and targets those in the midst of grief and despair. Led by Yellowjackets' Sophie Thatcher, Obi-Wan Kenobi's Vivien Lyra Blair and Birds of Prey's Chris Messina, The Boogeyman has scored mixed reviews, but it may not have a negative effect on its box office.

Per Deadline, The Boogeyman has opened somewhat below its original projections of between $15-17 million, with its three-day projections now set at $11.5 million thanks to the overwhelming attention being received by its box office competition Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Even with the lower opening, this still provides the movie with the best opening weekend for a Stephen King...

The Boogeyman’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Stephen King’s Most Important In 16 Years
Image
The Boogeyman's Rotten Tomatoes score is the most important for a Stephen King movie in 16 years after receiving favorable reviews. It took 50 years for Stephen King's short story to make its way to the big screen. The Boogeyman's release in June 2023 left fans of the terrifying story waiting for decades to see a worthy adaptation, with director Rob Savage, writers Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman leading the charge. They are the latest minds to bring a Stephen King movie adaptation to Hollywood, as the horror writer's novels and shorts have long been used as source material for thrilling films.

The good news is that The Boogeyman reviews indicate the movie adaptation was worth the wait. The movie holds a Fresh critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, currently sitting at 67% based on 66 reviews tallied by the review aggregator. The Boogeyman's Rotten Tomatoes score might fluctuate higher or...

‘The Boogeyman’ – Why the Original Short Story Is Stephen King Horror At Its Finest
Image
Like many Stephen King fans, I found the Master of Horror as a child. I grew up staring in awe at my dad’s paperbacks lining a high shelf and pondered the haunting images emblazoned on their spines: a hand covered with eyes and bandages (Night Shift); green claws poking through a sewer grate (It); a crow man fighting a man I assumed to be Luke Skywalker (The Stand). When I finally gathered the courage to read one, I chose Night Shift. At just 326 pages, it seemed more manageable than the 1,000 page epics I would later fall in love with. The table of contents included evocative but familiar titles like “Sometimes They Come Back” and “Children of the Corn” and most of the stories were short, clocking in around 10-20 pages. How scary could they be?

I would soon learn that King saves some of his darkest work for short story collections.

One Of Stephen King's Worst Movie Adaptations Gets Honest Defense From Star
Image
One of horror author Stephen King’s worst movie adaptations gets an honest defense from its star. The list of successful horror films made from the works of best-selling writer King includes such classics as Carrie, The Shining, The Dead Zone, Christine and many more. But King’s books and short stories have also received some notoriously terrible movie versions over the years, resulting in a list of turkeys that includes titles like Children of the Corn, Maximum Overdrive, The Lawnmower Man, Dreamcatcher and Cell.

But another film that is often listed among the worst King adaptations, 1995’s The Mangler, has now received a little unexpected love via its own star Robert Englund. Speaking to /film ahead of the release of the new documentary Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story, the Freddy Krueger actor insisted that despite its reputation as a huge disaster, The Mangler may deserve a little reappraisal.

"Nerve-Jangling": Stephen King Adaptation Reviews Call New Horror Rote But Thrilling
Image
The Boogeyman reviews have arrived and they are largely positive despite one major critique. The film, which is adapted from the Stephen King short story of the same name, follows two sisters and their widower father attempting to combat a supernatural entity that has taken root in their home to prey on their fear and pain. The cast of the film includes Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair, and David Dastmalchian.

Today, critics have been allowed to share their thoughts on the film ahead of the Boogeyman release date on June 2. While many reviews say that the project doesn't do much to distinguish itself from other supernatural horror thrillers in the same vein, most agree that it still possesses a tremendously effective atmosphere thanks to director Rob Savage. Read select passages from various reviews below:

Nick Allen, RogerEbert.com:

‘V/H/S/99’ – 7 Things We Learned from the Blu-ray Commentary Track
Image
While you wait for V/H/S/85 later this year, V/H/S/99 has hit Blu-ray and DVD. Among the extras for the fifth installment in the found footage horror franchise is an audio commentary moderated by Bloody Disgusting’s own The Boo Crew Podcast hosts Trevor Shand and Leone D’Antonio.

All six filmmakers participate for their respective segments: Maggie Levin for “Shredding,” Johannes Roberts for “Suicide Bid,” Flying Lotus for “Ozzy’s Dungeon,” Tyler MacIntyre for “The Gawkers,” and Vanessa & Joseph Winter for “To Hell and Back.”

Here are seven things I learned from the V/H/S/99 commentary…

1. The film almost didn’t have a wraparound story.

Wraparound segments are traditionally used to make an anthology feel of one piece rather than a random collection of shorts, but the producers originally intended to forgo the framing device on V/H/S/99.

It was later decided to use the increasingly ambitious stop-motion...

The Wrath of Becky Review
Image
Plot: Becky decimated a quartet of neo-Nazis when she was just 13 years old. Now a couple years have passed, and she finds herself up against a new group of enemies.

Review: The pandemic shut the world down in March of 2020. But a few months later, directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion gifted a nation of shut-ins with a special treat: the thriller Becky, which has been described as an “ultra violent Home Alone”. Playing in drive-ins across America before heading to VOD, Becky earned $1 million at the domestic box office during that troubled time. In the long run, it made enough money and caught enough attention to get a sequel greenlit… and now we have The Wrath of Becky. A sequel that comes from an entirely new creative team, who decided to make a tonal shift that might not sit well with some fans of the original.

The Boogeyman Director Recalls Stephen King's Enthusiastic Reaction To The Film
Image
The Boogeyman director Rob Savage reveals that he had the adaptation screened for Stephen King, and apparently, the author very much enjoyed it. Based on a 1978 short story of the same name by King, The Boogeyman stars Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Lyra Blair as two sisters haunted by a terrifying creature in their home following the death of their mother. First reactions to the movie have been largely positive, praising Savage's new take on the material.

Now, ahead of The Boogeyman's release date this summer, Savage reveals to Total Film (via GamesRadar) what it was like to screen the movie for King himself. While waiting for King's feedback may have been a nerve-wracking experience, the author had an extremely positive response to the latest adaptation. Check out Savage's full recollection of the experience below:

"When the movie tested so well, we decided it was time to get his input,...

Unsettling Bourne & Children Of The Corn Crossover Art Should Not Exist
Image
New AI-generated crossover art of Jason Bourne and Children of the Corn should not exist. Within the last few years, art developed by generative artificial intelligence programs have become all the rage on social media. Software including Dall-e 2, Midjourney, and Artbreeder have allowed creative minds to conjure up beautiful as well as horrifying images of their favorite pop culture figures.

Using the film title pun Children of the Bourne as a challenge, Fahad Hoda shared his Jason Bourne and Children of the Corn AI-generated crossover art on Facebook. Check out the image below:

Children of the Bourne Posted by Fahad Hoda on Sunday, April 23, 2023

Standing in front of a cornfield, six young children eerily share Matt Damon's expressionless visage as the capable amnesiac spy Jason Bourne. Although the image is only a simple face-swap, Damon's face on children's bodies paints an unnerving picture.

Race, Religion, and Vampires in Bill Gunn’s ‘Ganja & Hess’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Stephen Dunn on set of Little America
Bathtub Teeth Brushing.

Trace and I are cruising through April en route to our live show at Salem Horror Festival this weekend, but we’ve been keeping busy with episodes on Stephen Dunn’s Closet Monster, Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and, most recently, Tony Scott’s The Hunger.

This week we celebrated the 50th anniversary of trailblazing Black queer writer/director Bill Gunn‘s Ganja & Hess (1973). This gorgeous, surreal, and unconventional vampire film stars Duane Jones and Marlene Clark as the titular pair of lovers.

Hess (Jones) is a multi-hyphenate Doctor who is also secretly a vampire. He often preys on members of his community, though his wealth and education keeps him isolated. When suicidal assistant George Meda (Gunn) takes his own life at Hess’ home, the man’s wife (Clark) quickly comes calling.

What begins as an investigation quickly turns into a sexualized affair,...

The Boogeyman: Release Date, Cast, Trailer & Everything We Know
Image
Coming in 2023, The Boogeyman is a Stephen King adaptation that will see one of the author’s earliest stories radically altered for the big screen — here are the latest The Boogeyman movie updates. Iconic horror author Stephen King’s back catalog is currently having a pretty impressive revival. However, despite how many directors are re-imagining existing King adaptations, there are still some brave souls who are taking on old King stories for the first time. A feature-length adaptation of King's short story The Boogeyman is set to arrive in theaters in June of 2023.

This has led some to wonder what the original story is about, and how will the movie change its plot. Like many of King’s short stories (including Night Shift’s original “Children of the Corn”), The Boogeyman is a sparse tale without much plot. However, this has not deterred one of the horror genre’s rising stars,...

Absurd, Uncomfortable Transactions

March wound up being a wild mix of episodes, starting with the classic thrills of UK haunted house film The Haunting, followed by a return to Woodsboro for last year’s Scream (2022), celebrating the 25th anniversary of Erotic Thriller Wild Things, as well as the practical effects of low budget creature feature Splinter, before wrapping things up with Canadian coming of age film Closet Monster.

For our first episode of April, we’re hitting the discomfort button hard with our very first Yorgos Lanthimos film, The Killing of a Sacred Deer. In the film, successful cardiovascular surgeon Steven (Colin Farrell) befriends weird teen Martin (Barry Keoghan) after accidentally killing the boy’s father during surgery. When Martin becomes too demanding, Steven tries to pull away, prompting the teen to initiate a curse: Steven must kill one of his family members – wife Anna (Nicole Kidman), daughter Kim (Raffey Cassidy...

The ‘John Wick’ Franchise Dominated VOD This Week
Image
“The Whale” repeated as #1 on two of three VOD charts this week, with Brendan Fraser’s Best Actor Oscar propelling significant new interest for Darren Aronofsky’s film. It leads at iTunes and Google Play, while its lower price placed it behind two $19.99 titles at the revenue-calculating Vudu.

However, the biggest impact on the VOD charts this week may come from the theatrical debut of “John Wick: Chapter 4.” Prior titles in the Lionsgate action franchise occupied six of the 20 slots at iTunes and Google Play. That’s less likely at the revenue-driven Vudu chart, where the three previous titles are available for $3.99.

But even “Wick 4” saw interest — that despite it lacking any immediate availability other than at theaters. Most platforms announced presales on Friday for Est (buying a digital download), even though that option is weeks or months away. It currently is #4, but briefly hit #1 over the weekend.

They Live (1988) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
The They Live episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:

I bet you thought when we started covering adaptations that we would be going to the Stephen King well more than a few times and believe me, we will. Today though, we are covering our second John Carpenter helmed adaptation after we discussed The Thing in the inaugural episode. While that one was pretty well known for being a more faithful adaptation of the book his hero Howard Hawks had adapted, not a lot of people may realize that They Live was sparked from a very short comic that adapted a very short story.

We came here to chew bubble gum and find out what the f*ck happened to this adaptation,...

‘Maximum Overdrive’ Blu-Ray Steelbook Coming From Vestron Video
Image
Being a horror fan in the 80s meant you were eating well with the height of the slasher genre bringing sequels for icons like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Kruger. However, another major component of 80s horror were Stephen King adaptations. The iconic horror author hit the ground running in this decade with a handful of horror movies based off his most popular works. This included The Shining, Pet Semetary, Cujo, Children of the Corn, Firestarter, and Christine. However, one of the films that is least talked about when it comes to King’s filmography is 1986’s Maximum Overdrive. The only film King ever directed has had many physical releases over the years including Blu-ray, but now Vestron Video is releasing a new Blu-ray steelbook edition of the film that will have your horror loving heart revved up.

“Children of the Corn” Movie Review: It Could Have Been Better, A Lot Better
Image
Children of the Corn is a new adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel, this time by Shudder and directed by Kurt Wimmer.

An adaptation shaped for the modern “sensibility” towards King’s novel, which raises philosophical questions about whether “any time in the past was better”.

I have never read such negative reviews about a film.

Movie Review

Could they have saved themselves the effort of making it? The answer is a resounding “yes”. It’s just another horror telefilm and which with this supposed regeneration of the tale – without covering any new ground – loses almost everything quitessential from the novel and destroys everything that the 1984 film had about it that was good.

Children of the Corn

En cuanto a ambientación y cinematografía: los recurrentes trucos modernos que, aderezado con algún susto ochentero, la convierten en más o menos pasable. Suponemos que está destinada a un público mayoritariamente juvenil que,...

The Children Of The Corn franchise made generations scared of kids and the Midwest - and for good reason! The Stephen King short story turned into a successful horror franchise chronicling a group of children in Nebraska that is possessed and influenced by a malevolent entity known as "He Who Walks Behind The Rows." The entity brainwashes them into killing the adults in the podunk town, creating a cult-like family that will harm anyone who stands against their values. The newest installment in the franchise was released theatrically earlier this month and has just hit Shudder, so you can keep up to date on the franchise from the safety of your own home.
