The Sopranos Creator David Chase’s Mommy Issues Influenced a Major Tony Soprano Storyline
Image
At its core, the character of Tony Soprano was driven by his unresolved childhood trauma, which stemmed from his problematic relationship with his manipulative and self-absorbed mother served as. Throughout the series, James Gandolfini struggled to escape the emotional trauma he endured during his childhood, which explains his overall demeanor in the show.

Although David Chase drew inspiration from the likes of Federico Fellini and Scorsese for the show’s cinematic approach to TV, the core conflict within Tony was grounded in the writer’s own reality.

David Chase’s mommy issues served as a basis for The Sopranos

When David Chase initially conceived the idea for the mob show, originally supposed to be a movie, the writer modeled Tony after himself. Similar to the Sopranos patriarch, Chase had a difficult bond with his mother, who passed away long before The Sopranos premiered.

‘Rush 50’ Isn’t a Greatest Hits Collection: It’s an Epic Saga
Image
Forty-seven tracks into Rush 50 — a new career-spanning anthology presenting 50 songs across nearly five hours — a cool sonic Easter egg arrives. Near the beginning of “Headlong Flight,” a track from Rush’s final studio album, 2012’s Clockwork Angels, Alex Lifeson plays a slashing solo-guitar break, which Geddy Lee and Neil Peart answer with quick unison bass-and-drum punches. The moment is a deliberate, near-exact replica of a passage from “Bastille Day,” originally released 37 years prior and included as track 10 on the comp. It’s both a fun throwback, and — heard here in...

“He wasn’t a gentle giant”: David Chase Misses James Gandolfini, but Disagrees With the Lie That Has Followed ‘The Sopranos’ Legend
Image
Seldom do actors steal the spotlight quite like James Gandolfini did. The man’s presence was enough to attract all the eyes in the room. He wasn’t just an actor, he was a force of nature and on the unfortunate date of June 19, 2013, he left the world, leaving a dent James Gandolfini-shaped hole in Hollywood. While it has been over a decade since he passed, his fans have stayed loyal to him all these years, keeping his memory alive, one The Sopranos re-watch after the next.

When he was alive, James Gandolfini loved interacting with his fans, but if you believe he was a “gentle giant,” The Sopranos creator David Chase has some news for you.

Why The WB Cancelled David Boreanaz's Angel While Ratings Were Still High
Image
The ending of Joss Wheldon's "Angel" gave fans a cliffhanger that also worked as a fitting conclusion to the series, albeit one that left the door open for the show to continue. In the finale's closing moments, Angel (David Boreanez) and the gang take their final stand against the evil Senior Partners and Circle of the Black Thorn, but the war doesn't end there. After the battle, an army of demons appear and Angel draws a sword in preparation for the dust-up, but the end credits roll before we learn the outcome of the fight. The rest is history.

Of course, the reason for the ambiguous conclusion is due to the fact that the season 5 finale, "Not Fade Away," wasn't supposed to be the show's ultimate farewell episode. While "Angel" arguably suffered from Whedon focusing on "Firefly" during its fourth installment, the final season marked a return to form, and...

“We were soulmates”: ‘The Sopranos’ Creator David Chase’s Heartbreaking Words on James Gandolfini’s Sudden Death After Feuding for Years
Image
The passing of James Gandolfini left a huge dent in the acting industry as he was one of the most sought-after and respected stars in Hollywood. Best known for his role as Tony Soprano, he created a lasting legacy not only in the world of television but also an everlasting influence on the people he has worked with.

This is why The Sopranos creator David Chase only has great things to say about his former colleague, whom he treated like a brother. Despite the challenges in their friendship, which were mostly brought by the strain of work, they still had that intuitive connection.

“Really hated that motherf***er”: Emmys Incident That Made ‘The Sopranos’ Creator David Chase Hate Lead James Gandolfini
Image
Throughout his Hollywood run, James Gandolfini preferred to stay out of the spotlight and wanted his acting roles to do the talk. But this isn’t to say everything was sunshine and roses on set, as the actor shared a tumultuous bond with The Sopranos creator David Chase, which only aggravated as the series progressed.

‘Köln 75’ Star John Magaro on Being “a Working Class Actor,” Owing So Much to James Gandolfini
Image
John Magaro is the kind of actor you discover, like a personal secret. Maybe he first caught your eye in The Big Short, as the geeky stand out among a pack of slick, self-interested traders; grabbed you as Yael Stone’s dreamy prison pen pal in Orange Is the New Black love story, or won you over as Arthur, in Celine Song’s Past Lives, as the husband on the outside looking in as his wife Nora (Greta Lee) reunites and rekindles with her childhood friend from Korea. I first spotted him playing a New Jersey drummer desperate to make it big in David Chase’s Not Fade Away (2012), but my come-to-Magaro moment was his performance as Cookie in Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow. His quietly devastating depiction of male friendship and quiet yearning was the on-screen standout of 2019.

More recently, Magaro has been getting attention for Oscar contender September 5, where he plays a U.

‘Omaha’ Star John Magaro Shares the ‘Worst Thing You Can Do’ as an Auditioning Actor
Image
“Omaha” lead John Magaro was 28 when he bombed on his audition for David Chase’s “Not Fade Away,” the actor said during a fireside chat at the IndieWire Studio, presented by Dropbox. Well, actually, his original tryout went very well — it was the callback that was a disaster. Why? Magaro says he failed by doing “the worst thing you can do” as an auditioning actor.

“I was continuing to do the same thing. I was doing what I thought you were supposed to do as an actor — what other people were doing,” Magaro said. “And at the time, there was a thing — and I don’t know if they do this anymore — but I remember getting casting notices, like— you would get an audition from the casting director and [it would read]: ‘Jesse Eisenberg-type.’ ‘Michael Cera-type.’ And I’d be like, well just cast them.” Don’t say that. Rush 50-Track Anthology Features Previously Unreleased Recordings
Image
A new career-spanning Rush anthology titled Rush 50 will include previously unreleased tracks and fan-requested material.

The collection is out March 21st and will arrive on vinyl as a 7-lp box set and on CD in a four-disc box set. It marks the first-ever career-spanning anthology from Rush.

“50? Is that all?…seriously…it’s a cool collection…but look at all those songs,” remarked Geddy Lee in a press release. “I’m exhausted just reading the effin list!”

Billed as a chronological trip through the prog-rock legends’ career — from their first single in 1973 through their final gig in 2015 — the tracklist is exhaustive, comprising live and studio recordings.

The rare material — some “fan requested,” per the press release — is frontloaded on Disc 1, including versions of early tunes “Not Fade Away,” “You Can’t Fight It,” and “Working Man” that are receiving their first-ever physical release on vinyl/CD. A handful of live...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Houses Some Awful Characters, But It Quietly Redeemed Its Most-Hated Character
Image
Not every character from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe has the luxury of being as adored as its title character. Xander Harris has been largely considered the worst, while some fans hated Dawn just as much. However, few Buffyverse characters drew as much ire as Angel's Connor, the son of the spinoff's lead.

The comic book continuation of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe, particularly the Angel series from Idw Publishing, was a saving grace for Connor. Played by Vincent Kartheiser during the show's last three seasons, the half-demon son of vampires Angel and Darla constantly fought an internal (and external) battle with a father he was trained to hate in a hell dimension.

While Connor's story could've been a compelling arc, it largely amounted to some icky storytelling that even Cordelia's Charisma Carpenter calls problematic. The show never had the opportunity to truly expand on Connor's redemption story,...

Francis Ford Coppola, The Grateful Dead Among Those Feted at Kennedy Center Honors
Image
“Not Fade Away” closed out the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony Sunday, just as honorees The Grateful Dead had used Buddy Holly’s ode to enduring love to close out hundreds of concerts over the years.

The packed house danced in the aisles to the bouncy beat after a night of honoring the Dead and other recipients of the lifetime achievement award for artistic accomplishment: director Francis Ford Coppola, jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt. The venerable Harlem theater The Apollo, which has launched generations of Black artists, also was recognized.

Longtime Deadheads, including actors Miles Teller and Chloe Sevigny and talk show host David Letterman, paid tribute to the band’s blend of musical experimentation, longevity and community building. “Their music fills the universe,” Letterman proclaimed.

The choice to honor The Apollo was an unusual one — the first time the Kennedy Center has chosen to honor a specific performance venue.

Image
Fans of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” were sad when her love interest and fan favorite Angel announced his departure at the end of the third season. Read on for more about the “Angel” 25th anniversary.

The character of Angel was born an Irishman named Liam, who was turned into a vampire by Darla (Julie Benz) over two centuries before, and became the sadistic and feared Angelus, who caused years of death and destruction across Europe. David Chase Followed ‘The Sopranos’ With This James Gandolfini-Led Drama
Image
David Chase will forever be synonymous with The Sopranos. As the creator of the most influential television series of the last 30 years, Chase's legacy shines brightly throughout pop culture in the 21st century. Notably, the TV landscape saw a boom in prestige cable dramas that would never have existed without his creation. Yet, because of his innate iconoclast streak as an artist, he refuses to rest on the laurels of the HBO drama. Not long ago, it was announced that Chase and Sopranos writing alum Terence Winter signed a deal with New Line to direct and write a new horror film. Chase still has his creative juices flowing, even for projects outside The Sopranos universe. Case in point, look no further than his direct follow-up to his hit TV series, Not Fade Away, his lone feature film as a director, which presents a more sentimental and reflective side to Chase and Tony Soprano himself,...

The Sopranos creator David Chase teams with Terence Winter for horror movie; bring on Cleaver!
Image
Deadline reports that The Sopranos creator David Chase is set to reteam with Terence Winter for an untitled horror movie set up at New Line Cinema.

David Chase is expected to direct the movie, which he will also co-write alongside Terence Winter. The plot details are being kept under wraps, but given the Sopranos pedigree, my mind immediately leaps to Cleaver, the fictional movie within the HBO series produced by Christopher Moltisanti. While I doubt that Chase and Winter are going the slasher route, it’s still fun to imagine.

Chase and Winter worked together on The Sopranos, with Winter writing or co-writing 25 episodes of the series, but this will be the first time they have reunited since the series came to an end and the first movie they will have collaborated on. David Chase to Direct First Film in Over a Decade
Image
Premiering 25 years ago this January, David Chase’s crime saga The Sopranos has been a blessing and a curse for the creator. On the former side, he was behind what is still among the greatest television shows to grace the medium. On the latter, it’s been a difficult peak to live up to, the only projects he’s tackled since being his overlooked 2012 directorial debut Not Fade Away and revisiting the world in the disappointing The Many Saints of Newark, which he co-wrote and produced.

Now, Chase is finally getting back in the director’s chair for the first time in 13 years with a new feature: Deadline reports he’ll reteam with his Sopranos collaborator Terence Winter on a horror film at New Line Cinema. Chase has directing duties for the WB project, boasting a script he’ll write with Winter, marking the first time the duo have collaborated on a feature screenplay.

Image
Prior to a couple of months ago, Bob Dylan had only played covered four Grateful Dead songs (“Friend of the Devil,” “West L.A. Fadeaway,” “Alabama Getaway,” “Black Muddy River”) throughout his entire career as a live performer. He added two more into the mix (“Truckin'” and “Brokedown Palace”) during a Japanese leg of the Never Ending Tour in April, and during a stop in Barcelona, Spain on Friday night he broke out a beautiful rendition of “Stella Blue” from the Dead’s 1973 LP Wake of the Flood:

The Best Cliffhanger Endings In TV Series
Image
A cliffhanger is a contentious way to end a TV show or season. Cliffhanger endings can feel like a cheap cop-out, or even like a betrayal of the audience. Having invested time and energy into a show and its characters, the audience wants to know how they end up. However, a cliffhanger ending can also be the perfect way to end a series.

Angel Ending Explained: What Happened After The Series Finale Cliffhanger
Image
Angel, Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off, ended in 2004, so what happened in the Angel series finale, and what came next for the vampire with a soul? Angel's series finale, "Not Fade Away," first aired back in May 2004, and despite the fact it originally wasn't supposed to end the show, it works well as a fitting conclusion. Throughout its five-season run, Angel proved itself a worthy companion to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, taking a darker, slightly more adult approach and better-developing characters who had started out on Buffy, including Cordelia, Wesley, and, of course, Angel himself.

The final season finds the team joined by Spike, fresh from saving the world in the Buffy series finale, and once more has the Angel Investigations team battling the forces of evil. Angel was surprisingly canceled during season 5, meaning that storylines planned to run for longer had to be wrapped up much sooner,...

Watch Bob Dylan Play ‘Not Fade Away’ as His Grateful Dead Tribute Week in Japan Continues
Image
When Bob Dylan broke out the Grateful Dead’s ‘Truckin’ earlier this week at the Tokyo Garden Theater in Japan, it seemed like a one-off fluke. But then he followed it up at the next show by attempting their song “Brokedown Palace,” though he gave up midway through when he seemingly forgot the words. And then on Saturday, he trotted out another Dead staple, “Not Fade Away.”

“Not Fade Away” was written by Buddy Holly, but the Grateful Dead played it 566 times between 1969 and 1995. Dylan first covered the song in...

The Sopranos creator is developing his first television show the acclaimed mafia series ended. The HBO drama, which followed the late James Gandolfini as the angst-ridden mob boss Tony Soprano, is widely considered one of the greatest television shows of all time and is frequently credited with ushering in the Golden Age of Television. Since The Sopranos ended in 2007, its creator and showrunner David Chase pivoted to feature film, including working on The Sopranos prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark.

Now, Chase is returning to television for the first time since The Sopranos ended. Variety reports that Chase is teaming up with Hannah Fidell, known for A Teacher, to develop a new show for FX which has already been given a pilot commitment. Angel Ending Explained: Let's Go To Work
Image
Much like its parent show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" relied heavily on metaphor. However, while "Buffy" dealt with the high school experience, only truly going dark in its later seasons, "Angel" always sought to tell more adult-oriented stories. The spin-off never quite reached the same heights of the original, but it came pretty damn close, and there are certain aspects of the series that were even stronger. For one, just about every character who made the jump from "Buffy" to "Angel" was the better for it. Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), Wesley (Alexis Denisof), Faith (Eliza Dushku), and Darla (Julie Benz) all went from being relatively one-dimensional, to becoming some of the best characters in the entire Buffyverse. Even Harmony (Mercedes McNab) was vastly improved.

Perhaps the biggest revelation was Angel (David Boreanaz) himself. A broody hunk who was far more interesting when he actually went evil, Buffy's former beau was...

Selling The Sopranos To HBO Just Took A Little Bit Of Murder
Image
"The Sopranos" isn't the first gangster show on television and it won't be the last, but it certainly made the biggest splash. Over six sprawling seasons from 1999 to 2007, David Chase's HBO series told the story of his own warped family dynamic, infused into a mobster's mid-life crisis. A decade and a half after its finale, the show has become one of the most celebrated of all time.

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Chase talked about the show and the lessons that came of it. The "Not Fade Away" director was no stranger to writing for episodic tv; prior credits include "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" and private eye series "The Rockford Files." It was on these shows that Chase learned the boundaries of network television writing – "Rockford" taught that he could make his hero do all sorts of awful acts as long as he's competent at what he does.

Sammy Hagar, Bob Weir, and Ronnie Dunn walk into a theater… While it sounds like the setup to a music nerd’s joke or the opening of the Seventh Seal, this actually happened onstage in Nashville on Tuesday night when the Grateful Dead guitarist and the singing half of Brooks & Dunn made a joint cameo at Hagar’s Ryman Auditorium concert.
