The really good news this weekend — two new openings combined grossing close to double their expectations — counterbalanced the grim result of a Marvel release collapsing in its second weekend.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (Disney) retained its #1 position the second weekend but with a 70 percent drop — the biggest fall ever for a Marvel title from the studio. “Black Widow” at 68 percent was the previous worst decrease (it also had PVOD access on Disney+). It’s slightly worse than “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” which, at the time, felt like a bad omen for that Warner Bros. franchise.

It’s a warning sign, though hardly suggestive of any imminent danger, that theaters can’t assume franchise/comic book movies will always sustain box office. That’s why when two much lower budget titles — both originals, both with less than guaranteed results — do quite well, it establishes that there are alternatives to comic book universe sequels.

DreamWorks' Shrek franchise is a classic case of diminishing returns. 2001's original Shrek was nothing short of a delight for adults and children alike, playfully twisting the established norms of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. Shrek 2 released to slightly less enthusiasm in 2004, before Shrek The Third, Shrek Forever After, and, to a lesser extent, the original Puss In Boots spinoff all failed to recapture that early DreamWorks magic.

With Puss In Boots landing in 2011, the Shrek franchise has stayed dormant for over a decade, even though the feline spinoff was a box office success and reviewed warmly. The ogre and the pussycat reunited in development hell, as Shrek 5 and Puss In Boots 2 both struggled to gain momentum amid directorial changes for the latter.

Studios that utilized theaters to boost PVOD prospects saw their efforts pay off this week. Refresh for latest…: The latest rerelease of James Cameron’s Titanic 3D has buoyed the big boat movie to 2.217B globally, meaning it still stands as the No. 3 worldwide release of all time. Right in its wake, Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has now reached 2,213.5M, still the fourth biggest movie ever and less than 4M from Titanic through Sunday. It will overtake Titanic, it’s just a matter of when.

Last session, Way of Water had cruised past Titanic internationally for the No. 3 spot of all time overseas, and holds onto that crown after this weekend with 1.567B through Sunday.

Either way, Cameron was indeed king of the (box office) world this frame, with 22.3M from the Titanic reissue (Paramount has domestic and Disney overseas) as well as 25.8M for 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Way of Water.

“80 for Brady” closely followed, with most theaters (with Paramount’s encouragement) capping prices all day to matinee cost. It grossed 12.5 million, significantly above expectations, to take second place. After seven weeks at the top, “Avatar: The Way of Water” dropped to #3.

That meant three films over 10 million and its the first time that’s happened on this weekend since 2017. (This February weekend usually faces Super Bowl competition, which we’ll see next week.) In 2017, the #1 film was another M. Night Shylamalan title, “Split.” It also opened to 14 million; with today’s higher ticket prices, it would be around 17 million.

The first Puss in Boots movie is one that I deeply enjoyed, which is something that I’m in the vast minority of. The decade-spanning Shrek franchise is quite possibly my favourite kids/family franchise of all time. Each movie in the series (except for the colossally disappointing Shrek the Third) holds a place near and dear to my heart.

So many kid’s movies get a bad reputation for being, well, only for kids. But, the Shrek movies prove that animated movies can be hugely enjoyable for adults too.

Eddie Murphy shares that he is open to the possibility of Shrek 5 and a Donkey spinoff movie. Murphy has been the voice of Donkey ever since the first Shrek released in 2001. But it’s different for the #2 and (it appears) the #3 top-grossing titles in domestic theaters, at least as of Tuesday. “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (Universal/19.99) marks its third week atop all three VOD charts we track. And multiple sources indicate that “M3GAN,” following the studio’s normal strategy for films that debut in theaters to less than 50 million, will add home rental platforms as well. (Universal did not respond to a request for confirmation).

“Puss” came out on only the third weekend of play in theaters, yet in successive weekends stayed strong. Its hold in consecutive weekends was down 19 percent, up 7 percent, down 21 percent this weekend.

Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is a bonafide puss in loot, as it will cross the 300M mark globally with today’s grosses included.

The highly reviewed sequel and Shrek spinoff is at 297.8M with Sunday’s worldwide actuals included. Directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, the adventure has surpassed Croods: The New Age and Encanto to become the third-biggest studio animation title of the pandemic era, both overseas and globally.

Puss 2 currently sits behind two other Universal animated films (Minions: The Rise of Gru and Sing 2) across the pandemic years. In the near-view rear-view, 2022 has now become the first year since 2008 where every DreamWorks animated release outgrossed every Pixar and Disney Animation release during the same year.

Oscilloscope Laboratories will team up with Mailchimp again this year for the free streaming event #SupportTheShorts, showcasing a variety of short films from the SXSW Film Festival on the streaming platform Mailchimp Presents. The Support the Shorts initiative was launched last year when SXSW was canceled because of the pandemic, causing short filmmakers to miss out on having their work seen by such a large audience.

While SXSW returned this year with an online event, the decision was made to continue with Support the Shorts to keep many of the event's short films in the spotlight. The short film event also will come with a new set of awards to recognize the titles that will be playing for free for people all around the world to see.

Oscilloscope Laboratories is teaming with Mailchimp once again for #SupportTheShorts, a free streaming event featuring a selection of short films from the SXSW Film Festival on the global streaming platform Mailchimp Presents.

#SupportTheShorts launched last year when SXSW was canceled due to Covid-19 and hundreds of short filmmakers lost the opportunity for their work to be seen. To remedy this, Mailchimp partnered with Oscilloscope to give these short films and their creators a digital home where their work could be enjoyed from anywhere.

This year’s online edition of SXSW brings back the platform for filmmakers to showcase their art at the festival and to a broader audience. In addition to the film licensing, Mailchimp and Oscilloscope supplied hundreds of SXSW festival badges to 18 organizations committed to boosting opportunities for underrepresented communities in the film industry.

We've been following Norwegian director Patrik Syversen in these pages for quite some time now. In 2008 Syversen was at the leading edge of the current wave of Scandinavian genre film with his indie slasher Rovdyr - released here as Manhunt - and has since relocated temporarily to the Us to direct the After Dark film Prowl. Well, Syversen was a busy man while on these shores, connecting with fellow expat Marie Kristiansen to shoot something entirely different - the indie drama Exteriors.

Manhunt and Prowl director Patrik Syversen and Artist Marie Kristiansen have directed and produced a new feature in Hollywood.

The two La based directors met through mutual friends in La, and were inspired by the many out of work people with dreams of making it big. Together, they decided to document and dramatize their experiences.

Can't tell you if the film is funny because I can't understand what anyone's saying but Alexander in a red kimono certainly caught my attention and the trailer does suggests a few funny bits. Considering the popularity of Skarsgård, I don't doubt an American distributor stepping in and bringing this to a wider North American audience.
