There's a lot lost in translation here, though that shouldn't be surprising. Like other reviewers have stated, it's true that the two male leads lack chemistry. That's true about the cast in general, and things seem more subdued, but that may just be a comment on the comparison between American and Japanese culture.
This is not a bad film, but at the same time it's really not worth watching unless you're a huge fan of Sideways, a fan of Japan and Japanese cinema, or all of the above. It's fine; just don't go into it with high expectations. And don't go into it expecting to laugh much, or to enjoy any substantive discourse around wine. Disappointingly, the characters seem much more interested in food than wine. Unlike the original, it fails both to engage the wine aficionado and to tickle the funny bone.
Bottom line: it's ... OK.
