After years of guest spots and smaller movie roles in the '90s, Timothy Olyphant established himself as one of Hollywood's go-to macho actors in the 2000s. His breakout came in 2004 when he was cast as Seth Bullock, the reluctant camp sheriff, in HBO's Deadwood, where his rugged good looks and hard-nosed demeanor made him a perfect fit for the western genre. After Deadwood's too-short run, he nabbed the role that would define his public persona for years: Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in FX's Justified, a character he'd play for six seasons and a revival series in 2023.
Justified allowed Olyphant to express the full range of his talents, injecting his tough guy character with a dose of sly humor. Or at least, it seemed that way, until the Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet showed a different side of the actor. Rather than a stone-cold badass, Olyphant's Santa Clarita character,...

"Every day, something we make makes your life better. Usually. Veridian Dynamics. Life. Better." These are the last words in a commercial extolling the works of megacorporation Veridian Dynamics, reminding everyone of all the things they've created we use every day. Surely this isn't serious, you might be thinking, and it's not. It's the lead in to the very first episode of Better Off Ted, a witty and satirical sitcom that doesn't lay off the humor for a single minute over the course of two seasons. It's what you might get if you mixed The Office, Arrested Development, Office Space, and Police Squad!, only to come up with something wholly unique.

“Dead to Me” creator Liz Feldman is back with another addictive dark comedy on Netflix, “No Good Deed.” Starring comedy TV greats Lisa Kudrow (“Friends”) and Ray Romano (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) as a married couple seeking to sell their gorgeous LA home after the death of their son. But as strangers flood through their home, they open the door to more than prospective buyers, dredging up scandal and secrets in the process.
It’s a quick binge-watch, which means you might wind up craving more suburban thrills before you know it. Not to worry, here’s a curated list of shows like “No Good Deed” to watch next.
Netflix ‘Dead to Me’
Naturally, Liz Feldman’s first Netflix series is a must-watch for fans of her new one. You’ll find a lot of tonal similarities between the two, though “Dead to Me” is more about friendship, less about marriage.

Comedy movies can be hit or miss for critical and audience success, as the genre isn't typically taken as seriously as other films. This means each decade has a litany of overlooked comedic movies that should be better remembered for their hilarious plots and campy visuals. While the Brat Pack movies of the 1980s have come to define this period of cinema because of their popularity, they don't capture the full humor and cultural moment of the '80s. The most underrated and rarely remembered movies from this period deserve a second life in the eyes of critics and viewers today.
Comedy is a strong indicator of the social and cultural opinions of a time.
Genre movies were having a heyday in the '80s, as the great cult sci-fi movies of the 1980s and other outlandish fantasy films often come to mind when remembering the decade. However, comedy is...

One must learn to laugh from one's daily life in order to cope. Thus, the genre of workplace comedy was born. Shows such as The Office, The It Crowd, Superstore, and more have been entertaining audiences for a few decades already. But the dated humor of such shows as the acclaimed American remake of The Office has had fans yearning for new material. If there are not enough jokes, it becomes boring and reminds one too much of real life; too many jokes and it can become cringy.
Most recently, the Netflix series Unstable has been the talk of the internet. In this intergenerational workplace sitcom, Jackson Dragon, played by John Owen Lowe, must save his eccentric father Ellis (played by his own father and...

Longtime showrunner Tim Doyle, whose credits include Rules of Engagement, Last Man Standing and Better Off Ted, has been censured by the Writers Guild of America West for posting a “racist and offensive depiction of a lynching” on Facebook last year.
In a letter to members today (read it below), the union’s board of directors said that charges were initiated against Doyle after the August 9 post. “Mr. Doyle was charged with engaging in conduct prejudicial to the welfare of the Guild and unfair dealing with other members in violation of Article X.A., Section 1 of the Constitution,” the letter states.
Doyle has insisted that the drawing, posted during the TV and film writers strike, was intended as a joke. The drawing depicted a man hanging upside down from a tree.
Following a hearing in which evidence was presented and Doyle’s testimony taken, a union trial committee determined Doyle “guilty as charged.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Elemental, the Pixar pic directed by Peter Sohn.
Launching with a world premiere as the closing-night film at May’s Cannes Film Festival, Elemental was penned by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hseuh, based on a story by the writers and Sohn about a fantastical place called Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth- and Air-residents live together.
The plot follows the quick-witted and fiery Ember (Leah Lewis), a new arrival to the city whose friendship with go-with-the-flow Wade (Mamoudou Athie) challenges not only her beliefs about the world they live in, but the person she wants to be.
The idea germinated from Sohn’s own experiences; like Ember, he was a second-generation immigrant whose parents moved from Korea to New York City. That starting point helped to form the film’s themes of fitting in to a new place,...

Following the success of the Narcos franchise, Netflix is diving headfirst back into another biographic series about the drug empire led by Griselda Blanco with Sofia Vergara. The new limited series, consisting of six episodes, is coming to Netflix globally in January 2024. Here’s what you need to know about Griselda.
News of the show first came about in November 2021, with Illuminerdi first reporting that a Narcos spin-off was in development with the same team. Days later, we also reported that the show was in development, and just a day after that, Netflix officially unveiled the title but was keen to stress that “there is no association or crossover between the shows.”
It’s taken a long time for Griselda to come to our screen. It reportedly took Latin World Entertainment eight years for the series to be picked up by a network.

Hulu is removing several classic shows from its streaming service, including Arrested Development and 90210. Some shows like the sci-fi series Dollhouse don't have another streaming platform. These shows are being removed because their licensing agreements have reached their end and Hulu has chosen not to renew them.
Several classic shows are leaving Hulu, and some don't have another streaming home. The promise of streaming, at least initially, was that it would be more convenient for the consumer. Especially as it related to television shows, the promise was that most dramas and comedies could be found on one of three platforms. New shows that debuted would exist forever, just a click away, for the cost of a subscription. But over the past few years, with disappearing shows and originals that are abruptly removed, the landscape of streaming has shifted significantly.

Updated: In another sign that shows — even famous ones — can no longer “live forever” on streaming in the new era of media companies re-prioritizing profits, a slew of titles will be leaving Disney-controlled Hulu in the coming days as their license deals expire. Disney CEO Bob Iger may be neck-deep in negotiations with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) this week, but his employees at Hulu continue to have an eye on saving the company money on his behalf. A new report from Vulture indicates that a large swath of classic TV series are leaving Hulu at the end of this month, including some shows that fans of ’90s TV will recognize instantly.
The good news in this latest round of cuts from Hulu is that it appears to be isolated to these shows, at least for now. Indeed, shows like Episodes, The Colbert Report, Rome, Severance, Counterpart, and Swamp Thing can't really be called popular today. At the same time, these shows have undoubtedly done their part in revolutionizing popular TV genres like comedy, drama, sci-fi, and horror. Sitcoms are one of television’s most reliable storytelling genres, and there’s something infinitely comforting about the playful tropes and conventions of these mainstream comedies. If you were, as I was, a big fan of ABC’s workplace satire Better Off Ted, it may feel slightly surprising at first that Netflix’s Unstable hails from the same creator — Victor Fresco, credited this time alongside stars Rob Lowe and John Owen Lowe.
Where Better Off Ted’s Veridian Dynamics stood as a paragon of corporate greed, Unstable’s Dragon is actively doing good for humanity while also making boatloads of money. The biotech firm’s founder and CEO, the improbably but impressively named Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe), is no greedy stuffed suit but a charismatic genius entrepreneur who actually lives up to the sort of hype once lavished upon the likes of Elon Musk and Elizabeth Holmes. If Better Off Ted felt prescient in its cynicism toward business, Unstable’s sunny outlook can’t help but feel a little out of touch with the current disillusionment toward Big Tech and billionaires.

‘Severance’ Review: Adam Scott’s Corporate Job Literally Splits Him in Two in Eerie Apple TV+ Series
While a movie like “Office Space” or a show like “The Office” might be the go-to pop culture reference point when it comes to the monotony and soul-sucking nature of an office workplace — after all, they have “office” in the titles — there is something to be said just going full tilt into the metaphor and depicting the corporate world as Hell. ABC’s short-lived “Better Off Ted” did so in an irreverent way, while never quite backing down from the fact that its Veridian Dynamics was an evil, evil place. USA Network’s “Mr. Robot” had more to say beyond its depiction of E-Corp (aka “Evil Corp”), but what it had to say about corporate culture was on the ball. And Comedy Central’s twistedly pointed “Corporate” explored the drudgery of a multinational corporation called Hampton DeVille with evil embedded in the name.

Sometimes, the broadcasters stop airing their more interesting shows altogether and send them straight to streaming, which is why Evil is now a Paramount+ exclusive rather than part of CBS’ primetime lineup.
