She only has three solo directorial efforts under her belt, but Greta Gerwig has quickly become one of the most highly respected filmmakers working today. Her 2017 coming-of-age drama “Lady Bird” was an instant teen classic upon release, and her 2019 adaptation of “Little Women” received similar rapturous acclaim, becoming the definitive film version of the classic book.

And in July 2023, after an agonizing four year wait and acting a lead role in partner Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” Gerwig came back to theaters as a director with the biggest film of the year. “Barbie” is a colorful studio comedy based on the classic dolls from Mattel, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the titular Barbie and her heartthrob Ken. The world of The Chronicles of Narnia has long been appeasing fans worldwide, first through the book series and then through live-action. And while the last flick from the official film series — The Voyage of the Dawn Treader — was released almost a decade and a half ago, Greta Gerwig is all set to revive the saga with a reboot.

However, as tremendously acclaimed a filmmaker as the Barbie director is and as epic as the fantasy lore by C. S. Lewis is, fans are already keeping their expectations low with this upcoming revamped Narnia universe. This is because the brains behind the same are reportedly planning a whopping 8 movies in the series, which is nothing short of disastrous news in itself.

Though primarily known as a comedy actor, Ben Stiller has maintained a steady behind-the-scenes presence as a director and a producer for decades, and he puts these talents to great use on TV's trippiest mind-bender, "Severance." But that's not all he brings to the table. 

Stiller has been known to complement his comedic roles with artsier fare, including Wes Anderson's 2001 comedy-drama "The Royal Tenenbaums" and Noah Baumbach's 2010 romantic comedy "Greenberg." He also seems to have kept his eyes open when it came to working methods, taking influences from acclaimed filmmakers that he could later use on his own sets. During an appearance on Mike Birbiglia's podcast "Working It Out," Stiller revealed that a certain restriction Baumbach used on set inspired him to forbid certain things while filming. In the case of "Severance," the thing he doesn't allow on the set is phones:

Ben Stiller shared how Noah Baumbach’s directing style rubbed off on him while working on “Greenberg.”

Stiller starred in Baumbach’s 2010 rom-com and recalled on Mike Birbiglia’s “Working It Out” podcast that the director had “no chairs” on set.

“I think it was like 10 days into shooting, and I’m like, ‘Where’s the chairs? Oh my God, there’s no chairs here,'” Stiller said. “And that’s his choice because he doesn’t want to have people sitting around.”

Stiller added that people still found a place to sit down, but it helped keep everyone focused and moving. So, when he directed the adventure comedy “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” a few years later, Stiller adopted Baumbach’s policy.

As Stiller has acted in films from auteur directors like Baumbach and Wes Anderson, he said he has picked up on certain methods of theirs to use on his own projects.

With massive horror franchises under his belt and a handful of belly-laugh comedy gems, audiences need not forget that few filmmakers can deliver delicate, grounded characters to the big screen like David Gordon Green. Greta Gerwig has been tapped to receive this year’s Pioneer of the Year Award. She’s only the second female director to receive the prestigious honor after Elizabeth Banks.

She’ll be feted at the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation’s annual dinner on Sept. 25 at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

All three of the films Gerwig has written and directed solo — Barbie, Lady Bird and Little Women — landed Oscar nominations for best picture, while Gerwig herself received Oscar nominations for best director and best original screenplay for Lady Bird, best adapted screenplay for Little Women and best adapted screenplay for Barbie.

The 40-year-old Barbie director tied the knot with her longtime love Noah, 54, on Tuesday (December 19) after 12 years of dating.

Greta and Noah got married at New York City Hall and then celebrated their nuptials by attending a Billy Joel concert at Madison Square Garden. At the show, they posed backstage with the singer himself and his wife Alexis Roderick.

“They were both glowing and celebrating. They are so happy,” a source told Page Six, adding that Greta “looked look a bride,” wearing a white suit skirt and jacket, while Noah “looked handsome in his suit.”

Greta Gerwig will preside over the competition jury at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, running May 14-25, 2024.

The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced on Tuesday that Warner Bros.’ Barbie will receive the Gotham Global Icon & Creator Tribute at the 2023 Gotham Awards.

Co-written and directed by three-time Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig, Barbie is the top-grossing film of the year, and the honor is the first major accolade it’s received as it enters the best picture Oscar race.

Adrian Tomine's 2007 graphic novel Shortcomings is a sharp, insightful, and dryly funny story with a protagonist who could easily be described as insensitive, self-centered, and condescending. Exclusive: Marriage Story filmmaker Noah Baumbach has set his next project, but it’s not for the screen.

We understand the writer-director is working on his first book, a memoir, which is currently untitled, and has been snapped up in what we hear was a highly competitive auction.

Knopf has taken North American rights. Jordan Pavlin, Knopf SVP and Editor-in-Chief acquired the book from Byrd Leavall and Albert Lee at United Talent Agency. Knopf will publish the book in hardcover, e-book, and in audio by Penguin Random House. UK Commonwealth rights were sold by Sophie Lambert of C&w on behalf of Byrd Leavell and Albert Lee, and acquired, at auction, by Jocasta Hamilton Publisher at John Murray.

Specific details about the book are being kept under wraps, but we understand the work will, in some way, chart the Barbie co-scribe’s life and career through key experiences and his relationship with cinema.

With this year’s selection, the Berlinale seems to be creating space in the festival calendar, between Sundance and SXSW, for a particular type of American indie: the melancholy, slight, intensely personal and hence rather divisive kind, in which vaguely famous actors—usually the comedic kind—play downbeat iterations of their more familiar selves. The noted independent animation powerhouse Laika is bolstering its expansion into live-action and has hired longtime Netflix executive Matt Levin as president, live-action film & series.

The studio is in production on its sixth animated feature Wildwood and is developing its first live-action project based on screenwriter John Brownlow’s action thriller novel Seventeen

Levin served as director, original independent film at Netflix from 2014 to 2022 where he co-founded the Original Independent Film department.

Laika’s planned expansion into the realm of live-action was furthered on Tuesday, with the announcement that longtime Netflix executive Matt Levin will be joining the studio in the newly created role of President, Live-Action Film & Series.

The venerated Oregon animation studio’s hire comes amidst development on its first live-action project — a feature adaptation of the action-thriller novel Seventeen by screenwriter John Brownlow.

Levin joins the stop-motion specialist following eight years at Netflix, where he most recently served as Director, Original Independent Film. He co-founded that department and is credited with helping it grow into a full-scale mini-major. Greta Gerwig’s next directorial effort is confirmed to be the Warner Bros. comedy tentpole “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie as the world-famous Mattel doll. Robbie let it slip in an interview with British Vogue this month that the “Little Women” and “Lady Bird” helmer would be in the director’s chair for “Barbie.” Variety confirmed the news.

“[With ‘Barbie’] comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it,” Robbie told the publication. “People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ’Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”

Gerwig’s involvement with “Barbie” has dated back to summer 2019, when it was revealed that she would be writing the script for the Robbie-starring movie along with frequent collaborator Noah Baumbach. Gerwig and Baumbach co-wrote “Frances Ha” and “Mistress America,” both of which starred Gerwig.

Following the success of “Marriage Story,” acclaimed filmmaker Noah Baumbach has singed a multi-year deal to write and direct films for Netflix.

Baumbach, an indie stalwart who broke out with the 2005 drama “The Squid and the Whale,” will exclusively work with the streaming giant in the feature space for the duration of the deal. The filmmaker is repped by UTA.

Netflix and Noah Baumbach are reuniting after Marriage Story and The Meyerowitz Stories with an official partnership that will kick off with Don DeLillo adaptation White Noise.

Baumbach will write and direct films exclusively for Netflix “for the next several years”.

The filmmaker will produce White Noise, which was reported earlier this month, alongside David Heyman, with whom he produced Marriage Story.

Huxley’s final book, published in 1962, follows a cynical journalist shipwrecked on the fictional utopian island of Pala in the Indian Ocean. Originally tasked with exploiting Pala’s natural resources, he uncovers an independently developed society and embraces the people, their culture and traditions — including psychedelic adventures and alternative social structures. His experience alters the course of his mission.

Huxlery wrote “Island” as the utopian counterpoint to his most famous work, the 1932 dystopian novel, “Brave New World.” “Island” explores the themes of freedom and the power of human potential. Huxley died of cancer in 1963.
