Now streaming on Prime Video, Thirteen Lives follows the incredible true story of the 2018 mission to rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach from Thailand's flooded Tham Luang Nang Non cave system. Although global media widely covered the high-stakes events, director Ron Howard thrusts audiences into the chaotic center with the same intensity and attention to detail he brought to his other classic "true story" films, such as Apollo 13 and Rush.
With such a big-name filmmaker and a recognizable cast that includes Colin Farrell and Viggo Mortensen, it would be easy to assume Thirteen Lives is a glitzy, exaggerated dramatization. Thankfully, however, the survival film is impressively authentic and respectful, with the only exceptions being relatively small details and omissions.

There have already been a few cinematic looks at the famed 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue that saved 12 young Thai soccer players and their coach. First, “Free Solo” Oscar winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin helmed National Geographic documentary “The Rescue.” Then, Ron Howard directed the 2022 biographical drama “Thirteen Lives,” starring Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, and Joel Edgerton.
Now, another documentary about what happened to one of the heroes after the media storm of 2018 enters the fray.
“Deeper,” which will premiere at the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival in the Documentary Spotlight section, centers on anesthetist Dr. Richard Harris, whose technique was key to extracting the stranded teen soccer players one by one. (Harris was portrayed by Joel Edgerton in “Thirteen Lives.”)
Jennifer Peedom writes and directs the documentary, with Alex Barry co-directing. “Deeper” is produced by Blayke Hoffman. Subject Harris executive produces the film and is credited as the underwater...

To paraphrase and/or completely misquote Karl Marx: History repeats itself first as documentary, then as a mid-budget survival thriller. “Little Dieter Needs to Fly” was adapted into “Rescue Dawn.” “The Rescue” was adapted into “Thirteen Lives.” And now, in that strange tradition, an incident that was first expressed through interview testimony and harrowing surveillance footage has been smoothed into a simple but suspenseful genre exercise, as Alex Parkinson adapts his 2019 documentary “Last Breath” into a mid-budget survival thriller of the same name.
Creatively redundant? Perhaps. But some things are so unbelievable that they only seem to make sense as a Hollywood (or Hollywood-adjacent) movie, and the gap between fact and fiction can occasionally be too wide to cross without a middle-man to help launder the truth. The story of saturation diver Chris Lemons is definitely one of them.

Sometimes it feels like Ron Howard has been around forever. The actor/director, who was born on March 1, 1954, has been a star in TV and movies for over 65 years. From his early days playing Andy Griffith‘s son Opie on “The Andy Griffith Show” to his directing of the latest “Star Wars” story, “Solo,” the unassuming Howard still finds himself the center of attention.
Now primarily known as a director, Howard has won two Academy Awards — for producing and directing 2001’s Best Picture winner “A Beautiful Mind” starring Russell Crowe — and has two more nominations to his credit for producing and directing 2008 nominee “Frost/Nixon” starring Michael Sheen and Frank Langella.
Let’s take a photo gallery tour of his 17 greatest feature films, ranked from worst to best. Keep in mind that our gallery strictly focuses on his directing career and leaves out his terrific work as an actor in movies.

Amazon MGM has acquired 200 Monas, the debut novel from Jan Saenz that was pitched as Margo’s Got Money Troubles meets Uncut Gems, with Imagine Entertainment on board to produce.
200 Monas follows a college senior who has 48 hours to sell her recently deceased mother’s stash of pills, described as “a rare pharmaceutical with mind-blowing side effects.” She enlists the help of a local drug dealer with a heart of gold to get the job done. Saenz will adapt and serve as an executive producer. Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody will serve as producers, with Brody and Joyce Choi overseeing the project for Imagine.

Simple ‘race against time’ premises can be exciting. Especially if they are based on true stories. It adds a sort of authenticity to the experience while elevating the characters involved to epic, larger-than-life, status. Movies like Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” did this with the rescuers responsible for saving the lives of a Thailand soccer team caught in a cave back in 2018. Or Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours,” which chronicled the true story of Aron Ralston, who had to amputate his arm in order to escape being trapped by a boulder in Utah back in 2003.

Don't you love teasing a new movie or series to your pals who haven't seen it yet, and dishing something like, "Watch out for ____, he's not what he seems?" The juicy saying rings true in a number of high-profile projects that have hit the masses of late, such as Magpie, a project developed by Daisy Ridley (who stars) and written by her husband, Tom Bateman. Bateman is perhaps most well-known in front of the camera, though, thanks to a number of buzzy projects such as Cold Pursuit, Thirteen Lives, and Kenneth Branagh's new Agatha Christie films. He also leads the Peacock series Based on a True Story with Kaley Cuoco, which is about to return for a second season. MovieWeb recently caught up with Bateman amid the release of Magpie to learn more about the unique character parallels between that and his hit TV show.

Martin Scorsese’s hate for superhero movies might’ve come from one DC sensation calling out his motto. Colin Farrell is currently the talk of Tinseltown, thanks to his makeover and performance as the Batman villain in Max’s The Penguin. Farrell once shared that he finds the Hollywood idea of “one for them, one for me” ridiculous.

Have you heard a true story so crazy that you think there is no rational way it could have happened? Ron Howard has shown an affinity for translating these kinds of real-life stories to the silver screen with Apollo 13, In the Heart of the Sea, and Thirteen Lives. But Eden is different its an unruly, feral animal set free upon a Lord of the Flies-like situation where supplies dwindle and motivations change out of strategic convenience.
Howard's new film is set on a deserted island in the Galpagos (where Darwin did his pioneering research; Eden was thus originally titled The Origin of the Species). Complementing the beautiful scenery are beautiful stars Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brhl, Sydney Sweeney, and Ana de Armas. Its all pretty to watch and intellectually entertaining at first. But as soon as the stakes are set and lines are drawn, Eden escapes Howard and...

For the last few years especially, Ron Howard seems to be fascinated by bringing true stories to the screen. Whether that comes in the form of fictionalized retelling of actual events, like Rush, In the Heart of the Sea, Thirteen Lives, and yes unfortunately, Hillbilly Elegy, or frequently shifting his focus to documentaries like The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years, the Jos Andrs-focused We Feed People, or this years Jim Henson Idea Man. But while many of these show the resilience of what humanity is capable of, or those who make the world a better place, his latest true story, Eden, couldnt be further from that. In fact, in his half-century as a director, Howard has yet to make a film quite as dark as Eden, a wild shift for a director that often relies on hope and the beauty of humanity. For a director like Howard,...

Exclusive: It doesn’t happen often, but Ron Howard is here in Toronto today to unveil at the Toronto Film Festival his new film Eden. What’s unusual for the Oscar winner whose films have grossed billions, is that the film is up for grabs for distribution as an acquisition title. Eden might seem a close cousin to his harrowing Thai rescue film Thirteen Lives, but this one has a sinister edge unusual for Howard. Based on a true story, Eden stars Jude Law, Sydney Sweeney, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Bruehl, Ana de Armas, Toby Wallace and Felix Kammerer as the members of three parties who flee post-wwi civilization to start over and build paradise on the Galapagos Islands. It devolves into a Lord of the Flies battle to survive the elements, and each other. Eden‘s world premiere is set for 5:45 p.m. tonight at Roy Thomson Hall.

Viggo Mortensen isn't pulling any punches about Amazon's decision to pull one of his movies from theaters early and release it on Prime Video. The film in question is the Ron Howard directed Thirteen Lives, which was slated for a limited theatrical run in 2022. However, the film's time in theaters was very limited, as Amazon made the decision to pull the film early in order to release it on their streaming service. Mortensen, best known for playing Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings, starred in Ron Howard's acclaimed movie about the rescue of a trapped Thai soccer team, and had nothing but condemnation over the way the film's release was handled by Amazon MGM Studios.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Mortensen held nothing back as he took shots at Jeff Bezos and the executives at Amazon who he says prioritized profits and greed over the cinematic experience. The actor started off by setting the stage,...

Viggo Mortensen is slamming Amazon for the “shameful” release of 2022 film “Thirteen Lives.”
Directed by Ron Howard and based on the true story of a Thai cave rescue, “Thirteen Lives” received a limited theatrical release plus a Prime Video debut less than a week later. Mortensen is now revealing that prior to the MGM-Amazon buyout, the film was set to have a full, wide theatrical release. According to the actor, that deal was not honored by Amazon.
“They were going to put it out worldwide in many, many, many thousands of theaters,” Mortensen told Vanity Fair. “Then Amazon bought MGM, initially promised to respect the deal that MGM had made with Ron Howard, and then they went back on that. Basically you saw that movie for a week in Chicago, New York and L.A., London, and that was that. Then you had the streaming, which I thought was really sad.

Actor and director Viggo Mortensen has publicly decried the studio’s handling of Ron Howard’s 2022 drama, Thirteen Lives.
Viggo Mortensen isn’t a fan of Amazon Studios’ handling of the 2022 drama, Thirteen Lives, and the actor and filmmaker has some rather choice words for the company. Mortensen co-starred in the Ron Howard film which dramatised the real-life rescue of thirteen young people trapped in a Thai cave as diving experts risked their lives to save them.
The film was originally bought by MGM and set for a wide theatrical release until the studio was purchased by Amazon. At that point, Thirteen Lives was instead switched largely to a streaming-only debut.

Viggo Mortensen is calling out Amazon for its handling of the Ron Howard film Thirteen Lives, which he starred in alongside Colin Farrell.
In a new interview, the actor called out the studio for scrapping the global release of the Thai cave rescue thriller to push it to their Prime Video streaming service.
“They were going to put it out worldwide in many, many, many thousands of theaters,” Mortensen told Vanity Fair. “Then Amazon bought MGM, initially promised to respect the deal that MGM had made with Ron Howard, and then they went back on that. Basically you saw that movie for a week in Chicago, New York and LA, London, and that was that. Then you had the streaming, which I thought was really sad. It’s a really well-shot movie.”

Viggo Mortensen called out Amazon in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine for the company’s decision to scrap an extensive theatrical release for Ron Howard’s 2022 movie “Thirteen Lives” and give it a global streaming launch instead. Mortensen, who starred in the well-reviewed Thai cave rescue thriller opposite Colin Farrell and Joel Edgerton, said the film was a “really good movie” that MGM intended to give a full blown theatrical release to after “they did their test screenings for that movie and got the highest scores in the history of that studio.”

Viggo Mortensen's most iconic role was the one of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings, but the actor hasn't appeared in any big franchises since. However, the actor has an explanation for why he has never starred in another big franchise.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Mortensen explained that he doesn't mind joining a franchise, as long as the story is good. The actor has starred in many successful films, including 2009's The Road and 2018's Green Book, however, his role as Aragorn is what brought him worldwide fame. He loved the role so much that he didn't rule out a return to Middle Earth.

“I can’t compare it to any of my films. I’ve never done anything like it,” he says, teasing Ron Howard’s upcoming thriller. “Two days ago, I was doing the dubbing and saw Jude Law giving me a hard time on screen. We are both giving each other a hard time in this film.”
Shot in Australia – “We shot in nature, in the wilderness. All of it!” – it also features Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby and Sydney Sweeney as a group of people heading to the Galápagos Islands. Hans Zimmer composed the score.

Recently, actor Viggo Mortensen has taken to stepping behind the camera as well as in front of it, having made his directorial debut with father/son drama “Falling” in 2020 and this year, releasing the romantic Western “The Dead Don’t Hurt” co-starring himself and “Phantom Thread” actress Vicky Krieps. Despite a strong continued track record, Mortensen shared in a recent interview with Variety that he still struggles to get things made and that his next project is facing challenges with financing.
“It’s only indigenous languages, it has no white characters, and there will be no movie stars – just lots and lots of horses,” Mortensen said of what he hopes will be his next film. “But I am convinced it will have wide appeal, because it’s a universal coming-of-age story about an adolescent boy.”

Viggo Mortensen is eyeing his next directorial project.
“It’s only indigenous languages, it has no white characters and there will be no movie stars – just lots and lots of horses. But I am convinced it will have wide appeal, because it’s a universal coming-of-age story about an adolescent boy,” he tells Variety.
The “Lord of the Rings” alumnus, who wrote the script for his next project “many years ago,” has been hoping to bring it to screen even before he made his directorial debut with “Falling” in 2020. Three years later, he completed his second film as director, Western “The Dead Don’t Hurt” – selected as this year’s opener of Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where Mortensen is set to pick up the Festival President’s Award.

Viggo Mortensen's latest movie, The Dead Don't Hurt, is the first time audiences have seen the actor in a Western since Appaloosa in 2008. Mortensen continues to be a versatile actor and Renaissance man, hopping easily from high fantasies like The Lord of the Rings to gritty and adventurous Westerns. Especially in the early 2000s. Still, Mortensen has kept away from the genre, favoring variety in his projects. From dramas based on true-life experiences like Green Book (2018) and Thirteen Lives (2022) to adaptations of well-known novels like The Road (2009) and On the Road (2012) -- he's never nailed himself down to one type of film.

Ron Howard has been part of our collective consciousness for as long as I can remember. Or at least he looms large in mine. Born in 1954, he was on many of the TV series I grew up watching and had his own starring role on “The Andy Griffith Show” by 1960. And his father had the idea that little “Ronny Howard” should play a good kid, not the wise-guy type popular in those “Dennis the Menace” years. He’d be nice. It stuck. He’s been known as “nice” ever since.
That made him much too easy to dismiss. However prominent he was — as a principal star of “American Graffiti” in 1973, top-billed “Happy Days” actor the next year and then as a director debuting with “Night Shift” in 1977 — we could take him lightly. By then I was reviewing films, and I overlooked him to a fault. I didn’t even give...

Colin Farrell seemed to, at one point be, an underrated actor that wasn’t appreciated for his unique qualities, but in the 2020s, he’s become the actor of the moment. Farrell couldn't have had a better year than 2022; he earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance in Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy The Banshees Of Inisherin, popped up in the heartbreaking science fiction drama After Yang, gave a more nuanced dramatic performance in Ron Howard’s underrated drama Thirteen Lives, and chewed the scenery as The Penguin in The Batman. Farrell has bended many genres to his will, but his performance in the terrific 2011 remake of the classic horror film Fright Night proves that he should work within the spooky genre more often.

The recently released Bob Marley: One Love is another entry in the popular biopic genre, and it's too soon to tell if the film will be remembered or overlooked by audiences. Biopic films often get a mixed reaction, as several have earned acclaim and awards while others have faded from people's minds. It can be difficult to have a compelling biopic as audiences are sometimes left wondering how accurate the film truly is.
