Imagine a world where your reality splits in two, where the lines between who you truly are and who you are pretending to be, begin to blur. For Ben Stiller, this wasn’t just the plotline of Severance, but a real-life experience.

Ben Stiller | Jimmy Kimmel Live / YouTube

Stiller lived through a surreal moment during a wild drug trip that made him question his own existence. So let’s look at this bizarre chapter in the actor’s life that might have helped him understand psychological duality, and add a deeply personal layer to his work on Severance.

What’s It Like at a Screenwriting-Focused Film Festival During the Strike?
Image
Most festivals don’t want protests. This one encouraged a picket line to form.

The Nantucket Film Festival, which took place June 21-26 on the foggy isle 30 miles off the Massachusetts coast, is uniquely oriented toward the craft of screenwriting. Stars certainly appear — Allison Williams brought the glamour this year — but pen and paper are more important here than primping and pompadours.

The WGA has been a longtime partner of the festival, and the biggest gala event was a Screenwriters Tribute honoring Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, the “To All the Boys I Loved Before” scribe Jenny Han, and Nicole Holofcener, whose “You Hurt My Feelings” screened in the lineup. That film is literally about an author, and so were several others that showed, including Christian Petzold’s “Afire.” And the biggest competition isn’t built around established names at all, but a screenplay contest geared toward finding new talent.

Singapore has become a thorn in Netflix’s side when it comes to demanding video content be removed from the streaming service.

According to Netflix’s annual Environmental Social Governance Report for 2020, Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority ordered the streamer to remove two programs with drug themes: Cooked with Cannabis, in which chefs compete to create marijuana-infused edibles, and the film Have A Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics, in which celebrities recount their experiences using hallucinogenic drugs.

Singapore has some of the strictest drug laws in the world, and that extends to their oversight of content. In fact, of the 13 titles Netflix has ...

Apple has ordered “High Desert,” a half-hour comedy series starring Patricia Arquette that will be directed and executive produced by Ben Stiller.

“High Desert” follows Peggy (Arquette), a former addict, who decides to make a new start after the death of her beloved mother with whom she lived in the small desert town of Yucca Valley, California, and makes a life-changing decision to become a private investigator. Netflix Added 3 New Movies And 2 New TV Shows Today
Image
Netflix has had a very big couple of months, with the streaming site bringing us tons of original shows, movies and, of course, a lot of beloved films and TV series from across various decades and genres. Without a doubt though, the biggest hit for them recently has been Extraction (you can catch a taste of what it has to offer via the clip above), but even if you’ve already watched it several times (like we have), there’s still tons to dig into.

Case in point: Today has seen yet another content drop that’s brought with it 3 new movies and 2 new TV shows. Admittedly, it’s not the most exciting offering we’ve had in recent weeks, but hey, the very fact that Netflix is adding new titles on a daily basis is something that should be applauded.

So, without further ado, here’s what arrived earlier...

‘Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics’: Film Review
Image
Writer-producer Donick Cary has spent his whole career near the top of the showbiz comedy heap, from stints on “Late Show with David Letterman” and “The Simpsons” to sitcoms like “Just Shoot Me!,” “New Girl,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Silicon Valley.” So it shouldn’t surprise that his first directorial feature, the documentary “Have a Good Trip,” is less a serious dive into its chosen subject than an excuse to have a lot of familiar-face colleagues and acquaintances serve up funny anecdotes.

Since those anecdotes are about hallucinogenic drug usage, this Netflix Original can hardly help but be entertaining. It also comes nicely kitted out with plentiful animation, campy archival snippets, comedy-sketch “reenactments” and more. But those looking for much in the way of real insight will find this amiable enterprise doesn’t stray very far from a general, standard-stoner-yuks tenor of “Omg I was So High!!!”

At least there’s little pretense otherwise,...

Netflix Adding Over 25 New Movies And TV Shows This Week
Image
This coming week is shaping up to be a good one for Netflix content, and that’s saying quite a lot considering how solid the output has been on the streaming platform over the past few months of worldwide quarantining. If you’re looking for an exciting collection of adult drama and kid-friendly adventures, though, May 11th through the 17th has you covered.

Fans of goofy, occasionally offensive adult cartoons will appreciate that season 3 of Bordertown will launch on Netflix this month. But if that’s a not quite up your alley, or you want something to watch with the kids, you can also check out all three seasons of the hit Nickelodeon show, Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Meanwhile, those looking for a classic thriller can check out the 2009 Johnny Depp film Public Enemies. The movie, which chronicles an attempt to take down gangsters in the 1930s, did fairly well...

‘Have a Good Trip’ Review: Netflix LSD Doc Is Way Too High on Its Own Supply
Image
It can be a lot of (semi-sadistic) fun to watch someone have a bad trip, and it can be a lot of (shared) fun to listen to celebrities reminisce about the bad trips they’ve survived in the past, but it’s generally agonizing to sit down and do either of those things for more than an hour. That sad fact of life proves to be an insurmountable problem for Donick Cary’s “Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics,” — namely, the entertainment value in watching a bunch of famous people tell interchangeable stories about seeing the carpets move or whatever.

Want to hear Sting tell you about the time he ate some dried peyote, got higher than the notes in the chorus of “Roxanne,” and then watched Halley’s Comet from the top of a mountain while someone smeared deer’s blood over his face? Of course you do.

Natasha Lyonne at an event for The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards (2015)
If you’ve ever wanted to listen to Natasha Lyonne, Anthony Bourdain, Ben Stiller, Nick Offerman, and Sarah Silverman discuss LSD, Netflix has the series for you. It’s called “Have A Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics,” and A$AP Rocky says the drug made him feel like a rainbow was shooting out of his dick. Netflix has unveiled the trailer for its star-studded, acid-drenched documentary about the world’s preeminent psychedelic, which will hit the streaming service on May 11.

Per Netflix, the documentary features comedic tripping stories from A-list actors, comedians, and musicians, as well as star-studded reenactments and trippy animations that bring their surreal hallucinations to life. Mixing comedy with a thorough investigation of psychedelics, “Have a Good Trip” explores the pros, cons, science, history, future, pop cultural impact, and cosmic possibilities of hallucinogens. The film tackles the big questions: Can psychedelics have a powerful role in treating depression,...

New on Netflix: May 2020 Releases
Greg Daniels
Looking for what’s coming to Netflix UK this month? Click here instead!

While much of the entertainment world is in lockdown and in danger of drying up their respective content pipelines soon, Netflix has claimed that they have more than enough finished projects and business will continue as usual. While that may seem to be an outlandish boast, it’s hard to look at Netflix’s new releases for May 2020 and not think “man, they’re really just not stopping.”

Netflix’s new releases for May 2020 are positively loaded with new Netflix originals, intriguing recent films, and even some fun new stock TV shows. Office creator Greg Daniels latest project, Space Force, premieres on May 29 and will likely be Netflix’s big blockbuster this month. Having access to Daniels, Steve Carell, John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, and more will do that for a project.

Elsewhere on the Netflix original front,...

Trailer for Netflix's 'Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics' Doc
Have a Good Trip: Un voyage psychédélique (2020)
"There's a 90% chance I'm gonna drown, but it's feeling good to be one with the Earth." Ohh yeah. Netflix has debuted the official trailer for a mesmerizing, amusing new documentary called Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics. The film is both an examination of "the pros, cons, science, history, future, pop cultural impact, and cosmic possibilities of hallucinogens"; as well as a collection of stories from various celebrities who talk about their experience(s) tripping and trying hallucinogens. "The true stories you don't know. From the people you do." Appearances by celebs including Adam Scott, Nick Offerman, Sarah Silverman, Ad-Rock, Rosie Perez, A$AP Rocky, Paul Scheer, Nick Kroll, Ben Stiller, Sting, and Rob Corddry. This looks and sounds totally rad, and I can't wait to watch it. I love these stories, and I love hearing about how hallucinogens are life-changing and positive, not something to be afraid of.
