In fact they’re giving Richard Linklater better treatment than the distributor of his last film, with a 13-title retrospective mixing usual suspects—the Before trilogy, Boyhood, Slacker—with some truly off the beaten track. There’s a few shorts I haven’t seen but most intriguing is Heads I Win/Tails You Lose, the only available description of which calls it a four-hour (!) piece “edited together by Richard Linklater in 1991 from film countdowns and tail leaders from films submitted to the Austin Film Society in Austin, Texas from 1987 to 1990. It is Linklater’s tribute to the film countdown, used by many projectionists over the years to cue one reel of film after another when switching to another reel on another projector during projection.” Pair that with 2008’s Inning by Inning: A Portrait of a Coach and your completionism will be on-track.

Ron Howard has wanted to go sailing for a while. In the ’80s, he flirted with directing a film called “Rainbow Warrior,” based on a real event in which the Greenpeace ship of the same name was hijacked. In the ’90s, he was in talks to make an adaptation of the Jack London novel “Sea Wolf.” Both projects eventually fell through. But “In the Heart of the Sea,” which opened Friday, is “the culmination of a long wish to do an adventure story at seas,” the director said. The movie, based on the book by Nathaniel Philbrick about the true story.

The Sea Wolf started life in 1904 as an adventure novel written by American journalist and author Jack London. Since it was first published, the story has been adapted for the screen no fewer than thirteen times. The latest version, released on DVD last week, was made in 2009 as an epic two part 3 hour TV movie co-produced by Canada and Germany. The film’s truly international cast includes Sebastian Koch, Neve Campbell and Tim Roth.

Wolf Larsen (Koch) is the tyrannical Captain of the notorious seal hunting vessel, the Sea Wolf. While on the high seas, he takes on castaway Humphrey Van Wyden (Stephen Campbell Moore). But instead of abandoning him at the next harbour, Wolf puts the mild mannered literary critic to work and rules over him with an unyielding iron fist. Much to Wolf’s surprise, the graft transforms Van Wyden into a hardened adversary – every bit as formidable as Wolf himself.

Simon Cowell is to receive a special prize at this year's 38th International Emmy Awards. The music mogul will be presented with the International Emmy Founders Award for his work on various TV talent shows, including "American Idol" and "America's Got Talent".

Other nominees include Helena Bonham Carter who has been nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress category for her portrayal of children's author Enid Blyton in the biopic "Enid", while Bob Hoskins is up for Best Performance by an Actor for his role as a reformed alcoholic in "The Street".

Fox 2000 has acquired movie rights to The Secret Journeys of Jack London: The Wild, the first installment of a young adult supernatural adventure series by Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon. The $25 million made-for-tv adaptation of Herman Melville’s iconic tale, Moby Dick, has added Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Charlie Cox (Stardust) and Donald Sutherland (It’s Donald Sutherland) to their already talented cast. As we’ve previously reported, William Hurt and Ethan Hawke have already signed on to star as the obsessive Captain Ahab (Hurt) and his unruly first officer, Starbuck (Hawke).

With Moby Dick being the most expensive production to date for Tele Munchen Group (Tmg), they’re leaving nothing to chance. Nigel Williams has penned the script with Mike Barker directing. Barker is best known for directing the critically acclaimed, Sea Wolf, while Williams famously wrote the script for the award-winning 2005 miniseries, Elizabeth I. Both Sea Wolf and Elizabeth I are Tmg productions.

William Hurt will portray the megamaniacal, peg-legged captain of the whaler Pequod and Ethan Hawke is set to play Starbuck in the upcoming Teutonic miniseries retelling of Moby Dick.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the miniseries is based on Herman Melville's 1851 novel, and is being produced by Herbert Kloiber's Tele Munchen and is being called the most expensive project in the German company's 40-year history. The budget is clocking at $25 million.

"We are delighted to have signed up two such powerful, charismatic and versatile actors as William Hurt and Ethan Hawke for the lead roles," Kloiber said.

Also back on board for the screen adaptation of the Melville classic is Sea Wolf director Mike Barker and script writer Nigel Williams, who penned the TV series Elizabeth I.

Cologne, Germany -- Herbert Kloiber and his media group TMG are returning to the high seas with a two-part miniseries based on Hermann Melville’s whale hunting classic “Moby Dick.”

Screenwriter Nigel Williams (“Elizabeth I”), who penned the script to Tmg’s recent oceanic adventure “The Sea Wolf” will adapt Melville’s novel. “Sea Wolf” producer Rikolt von Gagern and his Gate shingle are also on board the new project, with Rhi Entertainment and London-based Power Corp. International taking English-language rights. Tmg International will handle world sales.

Kloiber will again be going head-to-head with German channel ProSieben, which has its own “Moby Dick” project in the works. ProSieben and Tmg both brought out versions of “Sea Wolf” this year.

The white whale seems to be on everyone’s mind. Universal recently picked up a new “Moby Dick” adaptation, which Timur Bekmambetov (“Wanted”) is set to direct from a screenplay by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage.

Cannes -- German TV exec Herbert Kloiber is back in the Mipcom fray with his newly launched sales arm Tmg International.

The Munich-based company hit the ground running here with a 150-hour catalog spanning in-house productions from parent company Tele-Munchen Group as well as international acquisitions.

"After 39 years in the business, I decided a new trick was needed," Kloiber said from his yacht Wednesday.

Highlights of the Tmg lineup include the CBS series "Flashpoint" and a new version of Tmg's first-ever production, "Sea Wolf."

Tmg International also is handling select territories on several titles acquired in the wake of the bankruptcy of indie producer Carolco, including "Basic Instinct" and "Rambo," and titles from a former collaboration with Japan's Toha-Towa and Barry Levinson, including "Wag the Dog" and "The Jackal."
