Syfy Provides a Peek at this Weekend's Killer Mountain
Thank goodness for the Killer Mountain ads on the front page of the website, or even I might have forgotten there is a new Syfy creature feature premiering this weekend. As you can already ascertain, it has something to do with a mountain where people get killed.

Aaron Douglas (“Battlestar Galactica”), Emmanuelle Vaugier (Far Cry), and Crystal Lowe (Wrong Turn 2: Dead End) star in this weekend's Syfy premiere of Killer Mountain from director Sheldon Wilson (Screamers: The Hunting) and writer Peter Sullivan (The Dog Who Saved Christmas Vacation).

Though the title Killer Mountain probably sounds as generic as humanly possible, as you’ll read in this plot synopsis, there is a good explanation as to its meaning.

Located in Bhutan, Gangkhar Puensum ("Killer Mountain") is the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. According to local legend, 6000 meters is the abode of the Gods, and trespassing is strictly prohibited as a matter of religious law.

Trio Of Hunks Compete For "Spartacus"
Canadian actor Stephen Amell, British actor Aiden Turner and Australian actor Liam McIntyre have emerged as the three main candidates to replace outgoing leading man Andy Whitfield in Starz' "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" series reports Deadline.

Whitfield had to drop out of the ancient Roman gladiator-themed cable series in order to receive further treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma which it was previously announced that he had managed to recover from.

Starz apparently had been heavily weighing up its options and ultimately have decided to recast the role for the second season. Last month "Prison Break" star Wentworh Miller apparently expressed interest, however that deal never seemed to materialise.

All three candidates are being flown to New Zealand for screen tests and to meet with the show's cast and crew with the final decision expected as early as the end of this week.

29-year-old Amell has mostly popped up in guest star...

SyFy's Red Trailer | Felicia Day: Werewolf Killer
Oh, how I want to love this. I mean, how could you not? Felicia Day, who is lovely and funny and a geek queen, starring in a movie about a family of werewolves? What's not to love? And it's showing on SyFy, who brought us "Battlestar Galactica" and "Eureka!" Plus, it's written by Brook Durham, who wrote... um... Witchslayer and Merlin and the Book of Beasts. And... uh... it's directed by Sheldon Wilson, who also did... Carny and... Screamers: The Hunting. And...

Shit.

This is gonna be a wreck, isn't it.

Yeah, that doesn't look so good. Not terrible werewolf effects, I'll give it that, but still... not exactly inspiring. Look, I love SyFy movies. I'm not being ironic -- I genuinely enjoy them, and have seen -- literally -- almost all of them. Yes, they're terrible, stupid, atrociously acted and feature hideous special effects. That's what's so glorious about them.

Trailer for Syfy's Werewolf Hunting Flick Red Starring Felicia Day
Considering there is a Hollywood action blockbuster titled Red starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich opening in theaters in October, I would not be at all surprised if Syfy's upcoming werewolf flick Red, starring red hot Felicia Day, undergoes a title change between the time this trailer has been posted and whenever "coming soon" turns out to be.

Red puts a new spin on a classic fairy tale with Felicia Day ("Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog", "The Guild") starring as a modern descendant of 'Little Red Riding Hood' who brings her fiancé home to meet the family for him to discover that his bride-to-be's ancestral business is hunting werewolves. When he himself gets bitten by a werewolf, "Red" is forced to try and save the wolfman she loves from her very own family.

Stephen McHattie (Pontypool, A History of Violence) and Kavan Smith ("Stargate: Atlantis", "The 4400...

Syfy's Mothman Spreads Its Wings in New Clip
Despite the promising looking poster art that was being shown around at Afm a few months ago, the first clip for Syfy's Mothman had made its way online to prove that it's more of the same goofy stuff we can expect from the network. Sigh.

Sheldon Wilson (Shallow Ground, Screamers: The Hunting) directed the flick for Rhi Entertainment, and it stars Jewel Staite of "Firefly" and "Stargate: Atlantis". Wilson also shares a writing credit alongside "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" writers Sonny Lee and Patrick Walsh.

Well, at the very least this mythical psychic menace will be killing folks this time around instead of just making predictions about disasters. Look for it on Syfy April 24th at 9/8 Central.

Allow me to step into the creature's vacated psychic shoes -- I predict a scathing review from the Foywonder! Click below to watch the clip! I wonder if the monster will leave...

Firefly Star Encounters Mothman on Syfy
No relation to the awful Mothman Prophecies movie (if you ever read the book, then you know why I just described the film as awful; and if you have never read the book, you should and then you, too, will realize why the film was so lame), Syfy has finally checked off enough other cryptids from its list to make a new film about the Mothman starring a "Firefly".

Not much is known about the plot of this Syfy-bound Mothman movie simply titled Mothman other than the glowy-eyed cryptozoological entity in this version also kills people, which I guess is a major step up from crank calling people in that terrible Richard Gere movie. Don't expect this one to adhere too closely to the facts of case either.

Sheldon Wilson (Shallow Ground, Screamers: The Hunting) is wrapping up post-production on this Rhi Entertainment entry starring Jewel Staite of "Firefly" and...

Win Val Kilmer & Cuba Gooding Jr. In ‘Hardwired’
Yes, Val Kilmer and Cuba Gooding Jr. are together in a movie. The direct-to-dvd Sci-Fi movie Hardwired. If you’re looking for what one can only hope is at least some cheesy fun, we have three copies to give away here on Screen Rant.

Here’s a synopsis of the film:

Luke Gibson (Gooding Jr.) is all but written off for dead after a car accident that claimed the life of his wife and unborn child, and left him with complete amnesia. Looking for test subjects for their new technological “breakthrough,” the Hexx Corporation offers cutting edge technology that saves Luke’s life, a Psi-Com Implant which is hardwired into Luke’s brain. Luke soon finds that the life saving technology comes with a price and that Hexx Corporation may harbor more sinister plans for the new device. Luke, with the help of his new allies, tries to recover memories...

Lou Diamond Philips vs. The Jersey Devil
Lou Diamond Philips has played a sheriff that fought winged killers in Bats and a cop hunting a devilish psycho in The First Power. Now La Bamba is going to need all his monster-policing prowess if he's going to survive an encounter with "The Jersey Devil" in the new creature feature Carny.

"When a traveling carnival comes to a rural Nebraska town, the caged attraction everyone is talking about is the alleged Jersey Devil. When the beast escapes, tearing the citizens to shreds, local sheriff Sam Atlas (Lou Diamond Philips) steps up to form a tracking team. But the carnivorous fugitive is only one of Sam's problems. The local pastor, enraged by the death of his son at the hands of the beast, has plans for igniting his own brand of hellfire and revenge."

You know when I think "Jersey Devil", I usually think Nebraska, and when I envision...

Screamers 2: The Hunting (2009) Movie Review
1995’s “Screamers” is one of those very cool sci-fi movies that didn’t get a whole lot of respect when it bowed 14 years ago, but thanks to the miracle of DVD, cable, and The Sci Fi Channel, it’s developed something of a cult following. That existing fanbase was enough to get a sequel greenlit and put out straight to DVD. The original was really a mish-mash of genres (definitely sci-fi, but it also had a lot of slasher movie conventions), and offered up a strong performance by Peter Weller and more than capable special effects. Aside from those things, it was also incredibly creepy, especially the screamer toddlers. Those things still give me nightmares. As the sequel opens, we are told that 13 years have passed since Hendricksson (Peter Weller’s character from the first movie) escaped the planet Sirius 6B in his ship, only to commit suicide upon entry into Earth’s orbit.

The Weekly Wrap-Up: February 22-28, 2009
If, as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, then The Weekly Wrap-Up has gotten me well on my way to Purgatory. The goal has always been to get something up each and every week, but too many times this year already there was so much going on that I had to forego my Wrap-Up duties.

So, in an effort to streamline the process a bit for myself and make it less cumbersome for you guys as well, I'll be limiting the column to the five most deserving items (in this Woman's opinion at least) plus the Story of the Week. From February 22-28, 2009, these are the things that merited more attention than they got:

Some of the best news I've read in months was that Zack Snyder Readies Sucker Punch. Not a remake, not somebody else's story. Finally we'll be able to see what he's really made of.

Exclusive: Lance Henriksen Talks Screamers 2, Near Dark Redux & More!
Throughout his illustrious career, legendary Lance Henriksen has played everything from an android to a ruthless vampire leader to a mourning father who turns to the supernatural for revenge to an ex-fbi agent who becomes a serial killer profiler with a secret group working against the prophecies of an impending apocalypse.

In the recent Sony Home Pictures release of Screamers: The Hunting (review), Henriksen plays Orsow, the reclusive scientist responsible for creating the screamer androids who annihilated the human race in the original Screamers film in 1995. Henriksen was a huge fan of the original film so it felt like a perfect fit to step into the sequel.

During a recent chat the living legend, Henriksen discussed his view of the character, “I saw the character of Orsow as this lonely guy who was so isolated because of his work. Because of that isolation, he went a bit crazy and lost control over his work.

DVD releases for Tuesday, February 17th, 2009
Wow, this week we have a veritable cornucopia of genre film dropping. First off is the [Rec] remake Quarantine which I personally enjoyed more than the original. I mean, that camera bashing the head in scene? Awesome! Then we have the (hopefully not) last in the Feast trifecta, Feast 3: The Happy Finish which is hands down a great series, see it. Next we have the long awaited Midnight Meat Train (review here) adapted from Clive Barker's story of the same name, and while this may have had a sordid history in getting a release, it's still worth watching. Then we have the surprisingly good (but badly titled) Alien Raiders which we all enjoyed (review here). Then we have Screamers 2: The Hunting which I know agentorange is looking forward too. Last but not least is the f***ed up genre favorite Ex Drummer out of Belgium which you should really check out.

Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 2/17
Choke

Even with the cult-led power of Fight Club, it took a long time for another Chuck Palahniuk adaptation to make it to the big screen. Finally, we were served Clark Gregg's Choke, a film that certainly relished its source material, but didn't inspire the rabid love of its predecessor. Still, it's a fun look into the life of a sex addict who fake-chokes in restaurants for money. Rent it.

Against the Dark, Screamers 2 Art
The great website DVD Active has unveiled the artwork for two Sony DVD releases arriving in February that seemed to have caused a bit of a stir: Screamers: The Hunting and the Steven Seagal vampire hunting flick Against The Dark.

One look at the box art for Against the Dark and you can clearly see Steven Seagal (with his katana sword of doom) is being touted as the star of this tale of commandos battling mutant vampires on the loose in a hospital. Hate to be the one to splash some cold water on everyone but from looking into this movie everything I've found seems to indicate that Seagal's role is a relatively minor one. Unless something changed, from my research, the real star of the film is the guy played "Toa" on the new "American Gladiators" and Seagal's role is slightly more than a glorified cameo being used to help market the movie.

Trailer for 'Screamers 2' -- Yep, 'Screamers 2'
Raise your hand if you remember the movie Screamers. Ok, keep your hand raised if you remember anything other than "Peter Weller," "Philip K. Dick," and "box office failure." Yeah, that's what I thought. It's not that Screamers is that rotten of a sci-fi horror movie ... more that it's just Ok. Not awful, but certainly not cool enough to warrant a full-bore cult following. But that hasn't stopped a bunch of Canadian filmmakers from unleashing Screamers: The Hunting.

I'll embed the trailer clip in just a sec, but since Quiet Earth did the leg-work on this item, we'll refer you to their site for more info. Screamers: The Hunting looks pretty plain across the board, but of course I'm always interested in seeing a video sequel to a 14-year-old sci-fi flick that nobody talks about anymore. (I'm weird that way. Someone kick me if they ever find a trailer for...
