Runners get on bases but don't score

Pier-Luc Funk's first feature film is a feel-good movie that lacks depth in the writing. A lot of storylines opens up without getting any explanation or conclusions. For example, we storylines are explored for Sophie and Mireille, but never really get resolved. The movie has great potential and is transported by great emotional performances by every child actors and Patrice Robitaille, but every part of the story seem to be barely exploited.

The cinematography is great with awesome settings and a great work from the costume designer to recreate the life in a 1960s rural town. However, it is not enough to make it a movie that feels a bit empty on the story side of it.

    Montreal Expos and 1969 Nostalgia...

This movie which involve a young teen who is a baseball fan and player, will endear those who remember what 1969 meant.

The main reference is the first year that the former Montreal Expos from Major League Baseball (now the Washington Nationals since 2005) started and this brought a generation of kids dreaming to be on the baseball field one day with all the greats.

Martin dreams of being a baseball player with the Expos, however, the local team coach scratches him from the Aristocrats ball club. It's up to his father to bring the dream to his son (and also makes a tie with him) by building a team of rejects from that coach and plays exhibition games on a ragtag field...

Well, we hear a lot of references from 1969: the Expos first games, Bill Stoneman's no-hitter, the first man on the Moon, Woodstock, the Manson murders and so on...

A very interesting movie for baseball fans and 1969 nostalgia...

    • Trivia
Pierre-Luc Funk and Patrice Robitaille are accompanied by ghosts of two Expo members who were on the team's first season: Mack Jones and Gene Mauch. Mauch was the first manager and Jones was the first hero of the former Jarry Park baseball stadium, where the bleachers were named Jonestown in honor of all the home runs he sent to that part of the stands on the first season in 1969.
