Kevin P. Farley in An American Carol (2008)

FAQ

An American Carol

FAQ

An American Carol uses the framework of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol (more properly: A Christmas Carol in Prose, Being a Ghost Story of Christmas) (1843). However, it is done so in political parody, changing the holiday to the Fourth of July (American Independence Day). The principal character of Ebenezer Scrooge becomes Michael Malone (Kevin P. Farley), a parody of American filmmaker and political activist Michael Moore. Jacob Marley is portrayed as former U.S. president John F. Kennedy (Chriss Anglin). The three ghosts become General George S. Patton (Kelsey Grammer), former U.S. president George Washington (Jon Voight), and the Angel of Death (Trace Adkins). The screenplay was written by Myrna Sokoloff and director and producer David Zucker.

On Larry King Live, 18 November 2008, when Larry King asked him about it, Moore just said, "Well, I hope it's funny". On a blog on Huffington Post titled "Why I'm Not Now and Have Never Been the Democrats' 'Rush Limbaugh'" he refers to it it as "a feature film starring Kelsey Grammer and James Woods that had me being slapped silly for 83 minutes."

Michael Malone starts out as an anti-American liberal (social democrat), but winds up with a more conservative, nationalistic attitude after he is visited by the three ghosts.
