The top 25 underappreciated films of 1993
Odd List Ryan Lambie Simon Brew 10 Oct 2013 - 03:27

Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 1993...

What a year 1993 was. It saw the release of Star Fox on the Super Nintendo. Bill Clinton became president. Season three of Deep Space Nine premiered on Us television. UK politician Douglas Hurd visited Argentina. Cyndi Lauper released her album Hat Full Of Stars.

Aside from those earth shattering events, we'll probably remember 1993, in cinema terms, as the year Jurassic Park dominated the box office like an angry Tyrannosaurus. A true phenomenon, its profits doubled those of the second most watched film in 1993 cinemas, Mrs Doubtfire, and almost three times as much as the movie below that - the Harrison Ford thriller, The Fugitive.

But as ever, there was so much more to the 1993 movie landscape than dinosaurs and Robin Williams dressed as an old woman.

Prototype Developer Radical Entertainment Closes Its Doors
Radical Entertainment, the guys behind the Prototype franchise, The Simpsons: Hit and Run and Scarface: The World is Yours is to close its doors. The Activision owned company will still be around for a supporting role on other Activision projects but they will no longer be developing its on games from now on. A Statement to Kotaku reads:

“Although we made a substantial investment in the Prototype IP, it did not find a broad commercial audience. Radical is a very talented team of developers, however, we have explored various options for the studio, including a potential sale of the business, and have made a difficult conclusion through the consultation process that the only remaining option is a significant reduction in staff.

“As such, some employees will remain working for Radical Entertainment supporting other existing Activision Publishing projects, but the studio will cease development of its own games going forward.”

Kate Beckinsale, Shuler Hensley, Hugh Jackman, Richard Roxburgh, and Will Kemp in Van Helsing (2004)
We now know that when Van Helsing, the famous vampire hunter, gets a reboot, the movie will probably not look anything like the Hugh Jackman flick. Hopefully, they're ditching that hat.

Also, listen to Seth Rogen laugh, and see an old Bryan Cranston commercial in today's Dailies!

After a federal appeals court ruled California's ban on same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional on Tuesday, Modern Family stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet celebrated via Twitter.

In a picture posted to Jesse's Twitter account, the actors, who play a gay couple on ABC's Emmy-winning sitcom, are featured standing in front of an American flag and holding a sign that reads, "How could you Not want to see us tie the knot?"

New Clips: Modern Family's Hit and Run

The ruling could potentially affect the storyline of the show's upcoming seasons. We'll just have to wait and see.

The ban, Proposition 8, was approved in 2008. The court called it unconstitutional after concluding that the law served no purpose other than to deny gay couples marriage, therefore singling out a minority group for disparate treatment.

Modern Family Review: "Hit and Run" (Episode 3.5)
This week’s Modern Family episode “Hit and Run” focused on several stories for the Pritchett and Dunphy clans. Cam and Mitchell argue about Cam’s anger management issues; Claire considers a run for town council; Gloria feels left out by Jay and Manny when they each deal with issues at work and school; Haley gets bilked out of $900 trying to buy fake IDs; and Jay feels old and humiliated when he has to work with a business partner’s son on building closets for a new high-rise. Unlike last week when the show clicked on all cylinders, “Hit and Run” felt...

Modern Family Review: Hit and Running for Office
What do you get when you try to run with other people's money? Tackled by four dudes, that's what. "Hit and Run" definitely depicted its fair share of fleeing the scene, no matter how predictable.

So what would you do if someone hit your car and then ran? Or jacked your money and then ran? I mean, if Mitchell can take down a perpetrator with just with a hoodie grab, and admire his skinny jeans while doing so, it's safe to say any of you could do that same.

Then again, he did have some major help in the form of his overweight hubby jumping on the guy's back. Poor Cam was having a rough day, he needed to kick some butt. First, he struck out trying to warn that guy at The Muppet Movie and then he scratched the roof of his mouth when the car got rear-ended. That can really hurt!

How Grand Theft Auto III’s Open-World Changed Gaming Forever
Many games have been considered as groundbreaking; often defining an entire generation. In the last ten years, no game has been as influential or trendsetting as Grand Theft Auto III was in 2001. Playing it for the first time was a moment of significance for many gamers, with most still able to fondly remember their first few hours playing the game.

It was an immense thrill to explore the vast open-world of Liberty City; a exaggerated and stylised recreation of New York. Unprecedented in its scope and ambition, gamers who had become accustomed to linear mission structures and a lack of freedom now found themselves playing a game which encouraged exploration, giving its players the choice to do whatever they wanted.

Grand Theft Auto III remains the moment the popular and controversial series introduced a particular style of open-world gameplay. In the years that followed, its influence could be felt in...

Hollywood's most interesting blockbuster failures of the past 25 years
Not every movie can be a hit, and some blockbusters offer far more than their big budget and failure to dominate the box office might suggest. Here's our look at ten fascinating failures...

There are blockbuster movies that fail for good reason. Jonah Hex, Town & Country, Catwoman - they deserved their fate, really. In fact, there are films that made bucketloads of cash that didn't deserve their success, too. You can probably name a few of them quite easily.

But what we're interested in here are the blockbuster movies that struggled to make an impact, yet have something about them that makes them worthy of discussion many, many years later. Some of the films we're about to discuss are outright box office flops. Some simply didn't meet commercial expectations. All of them, to some degree, disappointed the studios that backed them.

Some of these aren't, all in honesty, particularly good.

Loleatta Holloway Dies At 64
Chicago — Disco singer Loleatta Holloway, known for the 1980 hit "Love Sensation," has died.

Her manager, Ron Richardson, says Holloway died of heart failure Monday night at a suburban Chicago hospital. She was 64.

Holloway recorded several disco singles, including "Hit and Run" and "Runaway." But she's best known for "Love Sensation."

Her vocals were sampled by Black Box for the 1989 hit "Ride on Time" and by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch for the song "Good Vibrations" in 1991.

Holloway was born in Chicago in 1946. She began singing gospel with the Holloway Community Singers and later with The Caravans. Her solo career began in the 1970s.

Richardson said funeral arrangements were pending, but that her family planned to hold a public memorial.

AfterElton Briefs: Goodbye to a Disco Legend, Cuddlybear Will Return, Russell Simmons Honored by GLAAD, and More!
Dance music legend Loleatta Holloway passed away yesterday at the age of 64. Among her disco classics are "Hit and Run" and "Love Sensation," the latter of which was used in Marky Mark's 90's smash "Good Vibrations." My favorite was her collaboration with Dan Hartman on "Relight My Fire." She will be missed. The news we've been anxiously waiting for has arrived. TNT has officially renewed Southland for a ten-episode fourth season. This Kylie flash mob at the Sydney Opera House is incredible. it builds slowly until it hits a crescendo of utter joy.

Swedish TV is set to air a new series based on It Gets Better, and their inspiration was Fort Worth Councilman Joel Burns. One person can make a difference. Matthew Morrison has revealed that he and Gwyneth Paltrow will duet on "Over the Rainbow" for his upcoming solo album. This is what it sounds like when the bluebirds cry.

The Black List of 2010 - Part 1
With the publication of the 2010 Black List another compilation of the year's best unproduced screenplays has arrived. This is the fifth year that The Black List has been in existence, and its purpose is to shine a spotlight on what 290 film executives think are some of the best creative executions of ideas worthy for the big screen.

To be nominated and included on The Black List a screenplay can't have been released in 2010. As well, the minimum number of votes that a screenplay needed to have to warrant inclusion on the list is five. Several of the projects listed on Tbl are in development and will be released in the next twelve months. Others might have heat but take years to reach theaters, and there are also many that will never be greenlighted.

In the words of the creators of The Black List, don't take this assembly of screenplays to...

Full 2010 Black List of Best Unproduced Screenplays
Every year, film executive Franklin Leonard releases his list, called The Black List, of most-liked unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. This year's list was compiled from the suggestions of 290 film executives, each of whom picked up to ten of their favorite scripts. Since the list started in 2004, many screenplays ended up being turned into films. In 2005, two of the top three scripts were "Lars and the Real Girl" which was nominated for Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and "Juno" which actually won the Oscar. See The 2010 Black List below, broken up by how many votes each screenplay received. Keep in mind, some of the projects are already in the works. 49 Votes: * College Republicans (by Wes Jones): Based on true events. Aspiring politician Karl Rove runs a dirty campaign for national College Republican Chairman under the guidance of Lee Atwater, his campaign manager. 47 Votes: * Jackie (by Noah Oppenheim): Jackie Kennedy fights...

The Black List - 2010's Best Unproduced Screenplays
Back in 2004, a list was compiled of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood of that year. This came to be known as The Black List. It was all started by a young executive at Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way, who polled 90+ peers to send him their 10 favorite, new, unproduced screenplays to read over the holidays. It has since become a tradition at the end of every year, in December, to release this list, which is voted on by a group of individuals in the entertainment industry from producer assistants, talent agency individuals, and many people involved with film development all the way up to VP's.

The 2010 Black List is here, and thanks to Deadline we have the list of best unproduced screenplays. Most of the scripts we've heard of, many of them are in production, some have already wrapped filming, they just wont be released until next year.

2010 Black List: Most Liked Scripts in Hollywood
Every year, studio executive Franklin Leonard compiles the “Black List,” a collection of the best unproduced screenplays as voted on by 300 execs and high-level assistants. The 2010 list is the sixth of its kind to bring additional awareness to Hollywood’s hottest scripts.

Topping the list this year is Wes Jones’ College Republicans, a Social Network-esque story (read my script review here) about the underhanded election of Karl Rove to a National College Republican seat, managed by strategy wunderkind Lee Atwater. Shia Labeouf is attached to play Atwater and Paul Dano as Rove. Previous Black List leaders include 2008’s The Beaver, which became a long-delayed film directed by Jodie Foster and starring Mel Gibson, and 2009’s The Muppet Man, which remains on the shelf.

Top 10 of 2010 (via the La Times). The Black List is available for download on the official website. Update: the rest added below:

49 votes: “College Republicans” by Wes Jones.

2010 The Black List: The Year’s Best Unproduced Screenplays
The Black List has been released. The annual list is compiled with a poll of 300 (up from last year's 250) development executives and high-level assistants, and contains a ranking of the hot screenplays making the rounds in Hollywoodland, which were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2010 and will not be released in theaters during this calendar year. Basically, the black list contains the hottest projects in Hollywood that you haven't heard of yet. Note: The headline is a slightly inaccurate, because a lot of these screenplays have already been acquired (six of the top ten listed), a bunch are in production now, and some have even finished production. One of this year's top ten screenplays, J.C. Chandor's Margin Call, about the last 24 hours at now-defunct investment bank Lehman Brothers is already in the can and set to premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival with Chandor at the helm...

The 2010 Black List Screenplays Unveiled
Frank Leonard is the most popular man in Hollywood today. This fine December day marks the release of the 6th annual Black List, a ranked collection of the top un-produced screenplays in the town, compiled by Leonard. Last year the top script was The Muppet Man from Christopher Weekes about “the life and times of the late Jim Henson.” Coming in second was Aaron Sorkin‘s The Social Network script, which is a current frontrunner to sweep the Oscars. The year before was The Beaver, now starring Mel Gibson and set for a release in 2011.

The top one this year, College Republicans, has Shia Labeouf and Paul Dano attached. As for the rest of the list, I’ll be seeing Margin Call (pictured above) at Sundance 2011 and Safe House goes into production next year. We also reported on Oldboy director Park Chan-wook‘s English language debut with Carey Mulligan attached,...

Paris' Boyfriend -- Cited for Hit and Run

Paris Hilton's boyfriend was cited for hit and run last night ... after he hit a photog in a Bentley and then just drove off.

It all went down as paparazzi swarmed the car as Paris and Cy Waits left Boa in West Hollywood. The posse of paparazzi was all over the car, when suddenly Cy accelerated, knocking a photog down.

The couple took off after the hit and the photog called the cops. Paramedics were also called and took the female photog to a local hospital.

We're told at some point later, Cy came back, sans Paris, and spoke with police.

Law enforcement sources tell us Cy was cited for hit and run, then allowed to leave.

And get this ... sources say Paris is saying, "The pap is making up injuries."

January Jones Has The Best Lips Of The Summer!

From bright reds, to orange hues, to nudes to peaches, January Jones has the best, most inspirational lips of the summer!

I love nothing more than a celebrity who takes risks with her makeup and constantly changes things up. January Jones is just that girl. She always has on a perfect, totally covetable lip color at every event she goes to. At the Espy Awards in La on July 14, she had on a super pretty tomato red shade. I love the orange undertone on her. At a Louis Vuitton party in La on July 13 she swiped on an orange peach hue. For a World Oceans Day Party in La on July 8 she wore a shimmery nude hue and on May 24 at an LG party she went for a matte, bright red lipstick. Each shade is right on trend for summer and look so great on her. Take a...

Hit And Run (DVD Review)
From first-time director Enda McCallion comes Hit And Run, a combination of last year’s Stuart Gordon film Stuck and 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. This attempt at an art-house thriller mixed with psychological horror tries to be too many things at once, and ends up coming across as only average.

The film’s first half seems more like a social commentary, based on the real-life event that has already inspired not only Stuck but a Law And Order episode. Mary, played by Amusement’s Laura Breckinridge, is on her way home after getting drunk at a party when she runs over something. After an extremely short bout of compassion followed by a longer...
