Eva Longoria may just now be making her feature film directorial debut with Flamin’ Hot, but she’s been laying the groundwork for nearly 20 years — all the way back to her breakout role on Desperate Housewives.

After a decade of directing TV episodes for shows including Black-ish, Jane the Virgin and Gordita Chronicles, Longoria noted that for Flamin’ Hot “all of my TV experience paid off because we move at a very ambitious, fast pace and this movie was very ambitious in our scheduling. I really think wow, all of my 10 years in TV prepared me for this moment, which is a film set.”

“And I used Desperate Housewives as my film school, that’s where I really learned everything,” she continued at Friday’s Los Angeles premiere of the movie, which tells the story of Richard Montañez, a Frito Lay janitor who says he came up with the idea for Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

Hulu dropped its first trailer for “Flamin’ Hot,” an Eva Longoria-directed film about Mexican immigrant and former Frito-Lay janitor Richard Montañez, who claims he invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

The film, streaming June 9, stars Jesse Garcia as Montañez, as well as Annie Gonzales, Dennis Haysbert, Tony Shalhoub, Matt Walsh and Emilio Rivera.

Montañez’s story is that while he was working as a custodian at the Rancho Cucamonga Frito-Lay plant, he thought of spicing up Cheetos with chile powder. He contacted executives to pitch the snack and subsequently outsmarted corporate saboteurs, leading him to become a successful author and businessman.

The accuracy of Montañez’s story is disputed by Frito-Lay itself, which, in a Los Angeles Times article from May 2021, said employees located in the Upper Midwest actually created Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

Fumero will play Natalia, a Latina mother who mistakes Mayan for white, while Trejo plays Danny Martinez of Martin-e.Z. Movers, who is George’s rival and biggest competitor.

Lawmakers are petitioning the Department of Justice (DOJ) to launch an investigation of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, alleging it harmed workers and reduced consumer choices. Warner Bros. merged with Discovery Inc in early 2022 to create Warner Bros. Discovery. The merger caused significant changes, including David Zaslav taking over as CEO of the company, James Gunn and Peter Safran being named the co-CEOs of the DC studios division, and HBO Max and Discovery+ being combined. Not all the changes have been well received as the corporate shakeup led to mass layoffs and other cost-cutting measures.

As reported by Deadline, four Democratic lawmakers wrote a letter to the DOJ requesting an investigation of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. What's interesting about their petition is that the DOJ did review the merger at the time of its inception and did not object to it. However, the letter argued that the market share of Warner Bros.

Nearing the one year anniversary of Discovery and AT&T’s WarnerMedia merger, four Democrats in Congress are calling for the Department of Justice to reassess the deal.

In a letter to the Justice Department’s top enforcers, the lawmakers say that the merger has enabled Warner Bros. Discovery to “adopt potentially anticompetitive practices” that prompted numerous layoffs and reduced programming options for consumers. Months before the $43 billion deal was blessed, 30 members of Congress warned the agency in a letter in Dec. 2021 that the resulting competition vacuum would harm workers and consumers. Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz is opening up about her feelings on the cancellation of Gordita Chronicles, the HBO Max show about a chubby Dominican girl growing up in the 1980s.

“Not only was it disappointing when we heard about the cancellation, it was a shock because we were working to start shooting [Season 2] a few weeks later,” she told Rolling Stone. “It felt very unjust. It didn’t matter that our show was beloved, it didn’t matter that we had good audience numbers. It didn’t matter that we were writing about content that was important for underrepresented communities. None of that mattered.”

The show that starred Olivia Goncalves as the endearing Cucu dropped in June 2022 on the streamer only to be canceled a month later. HBO Max would remove the show entirely from its service by December 2022.

For Muñoz-Liebowitz, having a show where she felt seen “felt like I was reading about my own family.

Flamin' Hot, the biopic about the creator of the iconic Flamin' Hot Cheetos, has received its first official teaser. Flamin' Hot Cheetos have been an irreplaceable part of the snack food marketplace since their debut in the early 1990s. The film, which was announced half a decade ago, is now set to premiere on Hulu on June 9.

Today, Searchlight Pictures unveiled the official first look at the Flamin' Hot movie with a brand-new teaser.

Only 10 episodes of The Gordita Chronicles were produced before HBO Max canceled the comedy last summer amid a pullback on live-action kids and family programming. But at least creator Claudia Forestieri felt good knowing that new viewers could still find the show on the streamer.

“I got several DMs from people who saw it in-flight on American Airlines, where a few episodes are still available, and they ended up finishing the season on HBO Max,” Forestieri told Deadline.

But the consolation prize of keeping the show on the platform was short-lived: less than five months after The Gordita Chronicles was canceled, all 10 episodes were removed as part of a library purge that impacted dozens of programs on HBO Max.

I’m not gonna lie, being a TV fan is hard right now. Not only do we have to worry about the shows we love getting canceled before the story is complete, but now we also have to worry about shows being canceled at random stages of production, or worse getting erased from their streaming platforms entirely. HBO Max has been the worst at erasing its own shows from existence with around eighty total original titles taken off of the streamer last year as Warner Bros. Discovery plans to merge the service with Discovery+. But we can’t even call HBO Max’s great erasure a one-off moment, because now that Showtime and Paramount+ are merging into one streaming service, there are several Showtime originals that have been canceled with plans to erase them from the platform entirely.

The Writers Guild of America West released a new bulletin Monday slamming Warner Bros. Discovery for its film and television cancellations as part of its postmerger cost-cutting, saying they prove that the guild’s previous warnings that consolidation in Hollywood would stifle creativity and diversity in entertainment are coming true.

“Absent government intervention, this cycle of reactive consolidation will likely continue until it leaves just three or four companies controlling all content, while content creators and consumers pay the price for these costly mergers,” WGA West warned.

The bulletin also included testimonials from three creators of TV shows canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery: Claudia Forestieri (“The Gordita Chronicles”), Lisa Hanawalt (“Tuca & Bertie”) and Moises Zamora (“Whistleblower”).

HBO Max’s ad-free tier is about to cost you more.

Effective Jan. 12, the price of a new HBO Max ad-free monthly subscription in the U.S. will increase from $14.99 to $15.99, the streaming service announced Thursday.

Existing HBO Max subscribers who currently pay $14.99 per month will see their monthly rate increase to $15.99 beginning with their next billing cycle, on or after Saturday, Feb. 11.

While streaming giants such as Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery have signaled a slowdown in content spending, Sony Pictures has not yet felt a change.

“I don’t think the spending on content has changed dramatically. The way the companies are being managed has changed dramatically,” said Tony Vinciquerra, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Speaking at the Bank of America Securities 2022 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference Thursday, Vinciquerra said Sony Pictures, which has a five-year, first-pay-window licensing deal with Netflix, and a similar deal with Disney, is not “terribly concerned” about the rhetoric and has not shifted its production plans. That being said, Vinciquerra believes the level of content spending will change once his predicted consolidation of streaming platforms begins.

“The world doesn’t need six or seven general subscription video services,” Vinciquerra said.

US Latinos account for 20 percent of all US Americans, with a buying power of over 1.7 trillion, and as avid entertainment consumers, we are the ones who showed up at the box office in 2020 and 2021. We have to turn this pivotal moment into a turning point of positive change for Latinxs in Hollywood.

In the course of 12 tweets Thursday, Batgirl actress Ivory Aquino, who plays Alysia Yeoh, Barbara Gordon’s roommate and the first major trans character in a live-action DC movie, expressed her grief to Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav over the studio’s cancellation of the film, and pleaded with him to “Consider releasing Batgirl.”

HBO Max has canceled six upcoming animated series, including “Batman: Caped Crusader,” Variety has learned. The project was ordered to series in May 2021 with Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves attached to executive produce.

Yesterday, Deadline revealed that HBO Max had canceled Ellen DeGeneres’ preschool series Little Ellen and it’s emerged that this was part of a much wider strategy shift in kids animation.

Warner Bros. Discovery operates kids channels such as Cartoon Network and Boomerang and has had a pipeline of kids shows on HBO Max.

The animation pullback followed Deadline’s exclusive story on Friday on HBO Max and the cancellation of Gordita Chronicles, in which the streamer said via a spokesperson that “live-action kids and family programming will not be part of our programming focus in the immediate future.”

Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels, on the company’s earnings call, confirmed that kids and animation content, across both streaming and linear networks, would be cut “without an adequate investment case against them.”
