Apple TV+ are no strangers to producing high-quality comedy projects starring big-name actors, especially if those projects involve sport-based central narratives. With Ted Lasso one of the streamer's flagship shows, and many citing the Jason Sudeikis-led series as a core reason the streaming platform managed to stay afloat during a period of discontent, there's a new-look sports comedy in town ready to capture the hearts of subscribers: Owen Wilson’s feel-good series, Stick.
Following Wilson as former golf pro Pryce Cahill, whose career spiraled following a high-profile meltdown, Stick sees the man once on the edge of greatness looking to a troubled young protégé for redemption. Also starring Judy Greer of the MCU’s Ant-Man fame, Peter Dager, Yellowstone's Lilli Kay, Mariana Treviño, Marc Maron, Timothy Olyphant, and Sébastien Duncan, Stick seems to have all the components for success. However, prior to its arrival, the show was the early...

When Netflix released its “engagement report,” a chart that details the streaming giant’s top performing content from July to December 2024, on the film list, just past word-of-mouth sensations like “Carry-On” and “Rebel Ridge” and a couple of spots below heavily hyped sequel “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” the sixth most-watched thing on Netflix was “Sing: Thriller,” a short film set in Illumination’s “Sing” universe that features Michael Jackson’s beloved smash. This 10-minute “Sing” short performed better than animated features like DreamWorks’ “Trolls Band Together” and Netflix’s own original animated movies “That Christmas” and “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” a “SpongeBob SquarePants” project licensed from Paramount. “Sing: Thriller” racked up a staggering 77,000,000 views.
The short, which features an odd ooze turning the animal denizens of the “Sing” universe into zombie-like creatures, captures the colorful, brightly choreographed charm of the “Sing” movies and distills that charm into an easily digestible,...

It's been almost 20 years since Cars raced into theaters everywhere, and while there have been two sequels in the years since, none have reached the same heights as the original. One of the universal bright spots in the Cars franchise has been Mater, voiced by famous comedian Larry the Cable Guy. Mater features in all three Cars movies, and even stars in the two spin-off TV shows Cars Toons and Cars on the Road. Iron Studios has honored Larry the Cable Guy's performance as the iconic tow truck of Radiator Springs by releasing a new 1/10 size figure of him which is now available for pre-order and retails for $449.99. It features his iconic towing hook, and is expected to fully launch between July and September later this year.

Dream Productions, Pixar’s latest foray into the realm of Disney+ original series’, is perhaps its most experimental work in that space to date. Rather than standalone shorts or a more straightforward long-form sequel like Cars On The Road or Monsters At Work, this new series opts to take the “dreams as a film set” concept, the basis for one of the most memorable sequences in the original Inside Out, and expand it into its own narrative.
Given my love of both Inside Out movies and my personal passion for creative work in general and filmmaking specifically, this angle immediately intrigued me. And while the end result did frequently leave me wanting more, I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless.

“Win or Lose,” Pixar’s first original, long-form series for Disney+, was previewed at 2022’s D23 and again last summer at the Annecy International Animation Festival in France. And then … crickets.
Well, at Friday night’s D23 presentation, we got the release date — December 6 — for “Win or Lose,” and they showed a new trailer, which you can watch below.

The series, created by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates — story artists who worked on “Toy Story 4” — centers around a middle school softball game. (Go Pickles!) Each episode is told from a different perspective – it could be one of the kids, it could be the umpire, it could be one of the kids’ parents like it was in the episode that was screened at Annecy last year.

When Disney+ was initially announced, audiences were interested in seeing what the streaming service would boast in terms of its content. While brands like Marvel and Star Wars have helped to round out the premium storytelling on the platform, Disney has also turned to its animation houses to help curate more series. Early into the launch of Disney+, the company announced multiple new shows that would land on the streaming service based on original and new animated characters.
These intellectual properties were wide-ranging, and some shows like Monsters at Work, Cars on the Road, Dug Days, Zootopia+, and Forky Asks a Question have already been released. But Disney's release schedule is still full of series that have been previously announced but have not yet been launched on Disney+. These shows are thus still in development, and some of them aren't even attached to a release date yet.

Owen Wilson is set to star in a comedy series at Apple TV+ set in the world of professional golf, Variety has learned.
The untitled series hails from writer Jason Keller. Apple has given the series a 10-episode order. Per the official description, Wilson will star as Pryce Cahill, “an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer whose career was derailed prematurely 20 years ago. After he gets fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store and his wife walks out on him, Pryce hedges his bets entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom.”
Both Keller and Wilson also serve as executive producers on the series. Propagate Content’s Ben Silverman will also executive produce along with Howard T. Owens and Rodney Ferrell, Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady, Piece of Work’s Lee Eisenberg and Natalie Sandy, and Chris Moynihan. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris will direct.
This is the latest TV role for Wilson of late.

“Atlantis: The Lost Empire” producer Don Hahn had an anecdote about the ethos that drove that 2001 animated Disney film’s production. If other Disney animated films, the ones concerned with princesses and magic kingdoms, represent the Fantasyland area of a Disney theme park, the one you reach after passing through the castle, then he wanted “Atlantis” to be the Adventureland movie. This would be one where you turn left.

When it comes to a release schedule, Disney+ is anything but consistent. Their myriad content under the Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar banners have experimented with different release schedules. Pixar's latest short-form series for Disney+, "Cars on the Road," released every episode at once. Meanwhile, most Marvel Cinematic Universe series follow a weekly release format.
In the case of the newest "Star Wars" series, "Andor," the 12-episode first season is getting a three-episode premiere on Disney+. This release format is not an accident. Those early episodes serve as something of a prologue to the series, with its slow burn and methodic pacing leading to an exciting third episode that makes it well worth watching beyond the first two episodes.
Director Toby Haynes and writer Tony Gilroy have crafted a three-episode premiere that shows promise for a series that doesn't want to start with guns blazing or a giant action set piece.

The "Cars" universe has taken us all on a journey. With each new installment in the franchise, we learn more about this wacky, wild alternate reality the titular automobiles call home. The creatives involved have no problem further stirring the pot by adding more head-scratching things into their world-building. Sometimes this means pulling in stuff we're familiar with from our reality. And sometimes, it's especially otherworldly.
"Cars on the Road" -- the new animated series that just dropped on Disney+ -- takes Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and his best friend Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) across the country to meet up with Mater's Sister. Each episode involves a brand new adventure in a brand new place, which has provided director Steve Purcell and the creative team with plenty of fun when it comes to tackling how to go about each episode.

Pixar’s “Cars” have circled back around.
“Cars on the Road,” a connection of interlocking shorts that just premiered on Disney+ as part of the Disney+ Day festivities, follows Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) and Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) as they embark on a cross-country road trip for Mater’s sister’s wedding. Along the way they check into a haunted house, join the circus and cross paths with bigfoot. The shorts are incredibly charming and fit perfectly within the already-established “Cars” universe.
TheWrap spoke with Steve Purcell, who wrote every episode and directed three of the nine shorts and Brian Fee, who directed three of the shorts (and directed the very underrated “Cars 3”). Purcell and Fee told us about reusing characters from the “Cars” movies, creating stop-motion animation in CGI and how a surf guitar helped soften a ghostly visitation.
Where did the idea for “Cars on the Road” come from?...

Walt Disney Animation Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee regularly returned to the centennial of the Walt Disney Company during the studio’s massive panel devoted to the features they have coming up over the next several years. Innovation was the name of the game. With three years passing since the last time audiences were ensconced in Hall D23 both Walt Disney Animation and Pixar touted a desire to change with the times. Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter said, if anything, the pandemic forced the studio to ask “what’s our purpose” and based on the footage for both studios, there’s a desire to make that purpose great storytelling and A-list actors voicing iconic characters.
Unlike 2019, which had “Frozen 2” as the centerpiece of the event, complete with a musical performance and a clip, this year touched on several different shows with little footage. The big surprise was an appearance by Amy Poehler,...

In Pixar’s new animated short-form series, “Cars on the Road” (currently streaming on Disney+), creator/director and animator Steve Purcell puts Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) on a cross-country trek full of cinematic nostalgia. The stops include homages to the stop-motion dinosaurs of Ray Harryhausen, the Overlook Hotel from “The Shining,” and retro sci-fi movies.
“We wanted to send them on a road trip [to the wedding of Mater’s sister], and make it so that each place they stop was its own mini-adventure,” Purcell told IndieWire. “And that afforded us a lot of opportunity to create all these different, interesting locations, each with its own sensibility, style of music.”
Producer Marc Sondheimer added that in spite of the series’ short-form nature, it still contains 65 minutes of content. And it’s tied together in episodic form. “The launch of Disney+ afforded us a different form factor to tell these stories in...

“Lightyear” has landed … on VOD and Disney+.
The latest Pixar adventure imagines the movie that Andy watched in 1995 that inspired his love of the Buzz Lightyear character. “Lightyear” is a rip-roaring ride, with this version of Buzz (now voiced by Chris Evans), attempting to rescue a community of colonists from a hostile planet, after their ship crash lands and their fuel cell is damaged. Combining hard sci-fi with the kind of emotionality you expect from a Pixar movie, it might have been overlooked in theaters but can find a loving audience at home.
Of course, as with any Pixar movie, “Lightyear” went through some major changes along the way to its final version. Here are some of the versions of “Lightyear” that you’ll never see, with commentary from co-writer/director Angus MacLane and producer Gayln Susman.
