The following contains spoilers for A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story. now streaming on BritBox.
BritBox's A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story wants to add to British television's long history of great crime dramas. It's halfway there, with a cast whom fans will know -- even if they don't recognize the actors right away in the 1950s setting. But the script for the four-episode miniseries isn't intriguing enough to make viewers care about Ruth's predicament, beyond the terrible way in which she was executed.
As the title indicates, Ruth was the victim of abuse at the hands of her boyfriend David Blakely. She becomes the police's prime suspect when David ends up dead. The miniseries features great performances by Lucy Boynton as Ruth and Toby Jones as her beleaguered solicitor John Bickford. But it doesn't separate itself enough from countless other true crime stories, or stories about women who have been wronged.

When it comes to great television, the Brits are known for their compelling detective dramas that brilliantly blend complex characters with unexpected twists, especially their willingness to kill off fan-favorites as seen in shows like Happy Valley and Line of Duty. The ITV series Trigger Point, however, puts a unique spin on the genre, centering around Lana Washington (Vicky McClure), an explosive ordinance disposal officer (also known as an "Expo") who works for the London Metropolitan Police. In her line of work, Lana is always prepared for the worst. However, as the series unfolds, her personal and professional lives begin to intersect, putting both Lana and the people she cares about in danger. Series creator Daniel Brierley was mentored by Jed Mercurio, the prolific writer behind shows like the aforementioned Line of Duty and the hit Netflix miniseries Bodyguard.

The following contains major spoilers from Trigger Point Series 2, Episodes 5 & 6, now streaming on BritBox. It also contains descriptions of violence.
The final two episodes of Trigger Point feel like what the show was meant to be. Series 2, Episodes 5 & 6 are the strongest of the season -- but that may be because they rely more than ever on the strength of lead actor Vicky McClure. McClure's character Lana Washington is the center around which the episodes revolve, and because of that, they feel powerful and tense in ways that the rest of the season often hasn't. It creates a bittersweet feeling, as audiences can see the potential of this show should it continue past this point.
Episode 5 picks up with Lana having formed a rapport with Alex, the man working for the terrorist group now identified as The Wave. Lana taking the initiative in helping Alex and getting him on side doesn't...

Trigger Point Series 2 has continued to put Lana Washington through the wringer -- and Vicky McClure knows it. McClure stars as the battle-hardened bomb disposal expert, who is trying to put her life back together after an excruciating first season that involved the deaths of Lana's brother Billy and her partner Joel, among others. Unfortunately, the second season hasn't been much kinder.
Audiences have watched Lana return to duty after going overseas to train foreign officers, only to walk into a new terrorist threat known only as The Wave. Ahead of the Trigger Point Series 2 finale, Cbr spoke with McClure to talk about why she not only enjoys, but admires the character of Lana Washington. Plus, she addressed the comparisons between Trigger Point and her hit series Line of Duty.

The biggest strength of Trigger Point is the show's explosive action -- literally. The British television series is at its best when Lana Washington and her colleagues are searching for a bomb or staring it in the face. But those action sequences require a lot of training, as well as specialized expertise. That's where Paul Bidiss and Joel Snarr come in.
Paul and Joel served as technical advisors on Trigger Point, lending their real-world expertise to these fictional emergencies. Joel is a former bomb disposal expert who served in 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Search Regiment Rlc, including tours of duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland. Paul served as a Paratrooper before becoming a military technical advisor for a wide range of TV series, including HBO's hit House of the Dragon. Both spoke to Cbr about the technical intricacies and training that went into making Trigger Point.

The following contains major spoilers for Trigger Point Series 2, Episodes 3 & 4, now streaming on BritBox.
When Trigger Point returned for a second season, it was an opportunity to dig deeper into Lana Washington and the high-stakes world in which she operates. Four episodes into Series 2 and the British television drama has only accomplished the first part. While Episodes 3 & 4 provide a further look into Lana's mind, every other character in her vicinity continues to be broadly drawn and nowhere near as interesting.
Episodes 3 & 4 pick up after the death of Dci Thom Youngblood, with the police determined to find out who pushed one of their own down an elevator shaft. But the hunt is still on for the organization that person was working for, and they finally get a name as well as some more faces. Yet the plot is still a few pieces short of the top-notch British drama that the show wants to be.

The following contains major spoilers from Trigger Point Series 2, Episodes 1 & 2, now streaming on BritBox.
The Trigger Point Series 2 premiere reaffirms that Vicky McClure is one of the biggest talents working today. Unfortunately, the rest of the show hasn't improved as much as it could have between seasons. The bomb-disposal thriller makes for dramatic British television, but it's still got many of the writing flaws that made it underwhelming during Series 1.
Series 2 picks up six months after what happened in Trigger Point's first season, and premiere co-writers Daniel Brierly and Simon Ashdown wisely use that gap to do a soft reset. Pretty much everything looks different when McClure's character Lana Washington returns from a tour of duty overseas. But the first two episodes don't know how to balance Lana's adjustment with the latest bomb threat, and so there are great ideas lost amongst others that never land.

Whether playing Di Kate Fleming in Line of Duty or a back-against-the-wall bomb disposal expert in ITV’s Trigger Point, Vicky McClure has mastered the art of procedurals over the years.
But in Paramount+ series Insomnia from The Crown producer Left Bank, in which she plays a career woman, Emma, who experiences a breakdown when she suddenly stops being able to sleep, the actor-producer bucked the trend.
“I feel like I’ve grown up, I’m 40 now,” McClure told an Insomnia Q&a in London late last month. “There’s a lot of procedural drama that I do and I enjoy it, but I was excited to step into something that felt different.” McClure added that she quite enjoyed walking in heels for the entirety of the series, for example.

The following contains spoilers from Trigger Point Series 1, Episode 1, now streaming on BritBox.
There is a natural inclination to compare the TV series Trigger Point to Line of Duty. The bomb-disposal drama is produced by Jed Mercurio, the creator of Line of Duty. Its lead actor is Line of Duty actor Vicky McClure. But most importantly, Trigger Point feels like it wants to be Line of Duty -- and it falls far short of those high expectations.
In fairness to this show, which flew under the radar on its initial U.S. release and is now getting second exposure on BritBox, anything would fall short since Line of Duty is one of the best British crime dramas ever made. But Trigger Point, despite Mercurio's involvement and a cast packed with well-known faces, never drums up the tension it needs to match its premise. It's a run of the mill procedural in which things explode.

Lille — All3Media International has closed multiple major territories on ITV’s ratings champ “Trigger Point,” adding to stellar viewer numbers after Season 2 of the edge-of-the-seat thriller bowed last month averaging 6.9 million viewers across Itvx and ITV1.
That ranks as the third biggest audience for an ITV show since Jan. 2022.
Created by Daniel Brierly and produced by Htm Television, co-owned by Jed Mercurio, behind “Line of Duty” and “Bodyguard,” “Trigger Point” turns on members of a bomb disposal squad led by explosives officer Lana Washington (Vicky McClure).
Washington is back from Estonia, training Ukrainian bomb disposal operatives, having suffered post-traumatic stress disorder after the high body count of Season One. Almost immediately, there’s an explosion at the local power plant and Washington is the nearest expert. But can she hold her nerve?

2024 really is the year of the Difficult Second Series: after wowing us in 2023 and even earlier, shows like The Tourist, Extraordinary, The Rig, Suspect and Bad Sisters are on the way back for another helping this year, but the question is: will they live up to series one?
In among this, a trio of behemoth shows coming back: Doctor Who will return for series 14, or season one as it’s being styled, the first with Fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa, Wolf Hall is returning after nine years to cover the late Hilary Mantel’s final book in the trilogy, The Mirror and The Light, and dystopian anthology series Black Mirror will return to Netflix for its seventh series. There’s even talk of a prequel series to Red Dwarf, if that comes off.

Finally! After almost seven years, Happy Valley is back, and this BAFTA-winning crime drama’s third and final season is set to be as nail-biting as ever. These six fresh episodes from writer Sally Wainwright are definitely worth the wait.
Series Three dives back into the action around five years after the explosive events of the Series Two finale, beginning with Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) discovering the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir, a discovery which will lead her all the way back to her nemesis Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton).
Catherine still lives with her grandson Ryan (Rhys Connah) who’s now sixteen and working out what kind of relationship, if any, he wants with Royce, the man who fathered him when he raped Catherine’s daughter Becky. Needless to say, Catherine won’t take this well.

Exclusive: Hat Trick Productions, the storied British production company behind Derry Girls and Have I Got News For You, is courting sale talks.
Co-founded by Jimmy Mulville in 1986, Hat Trick has been a bastion of truly independent UK producers but is now entertaining interest from groups including All3Media and Fremantle.
The company has not formally declared it is up for sale and has not engaged the services of an M&a broker, but Deadline hears that it has recently held promising conversations with potential suitors.
Mulville has toyed with the idea of selling in the past, most recently in 2018, when he compared the process to a real estate agent valuing a house. Four years on, sources said there had been a flurry of interest in Hat Trick amid the success of shows including bomb squad drama Trigger Point.

Barry Pepper takes the lead in feature film “Bring Him to Me,” which is now shooting in Queensland, Australia, under director Luke Sparke (“Occupation Rainfall”). The picture is a mob thriller written by Tom Evans and which also stars Sam Neill and Rachel Griffiths.
Under orders from a ruthless crime boss, a getaway driver must battle his conscience and drive a young and unsuspecting passenger to an uncertain fate. Evans’ script was inspired by the traumatic scene in Martin Scorsese’s “Casino” in which Nicky Santoro (portrayed by Joe Pesci) unwittingly turns up for a meeting in a cornfield and things go South.
“I’ve been fascinated by morally gray stories like ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Drive,’ so when presented with the chance to dive deep into the underworld, I couldn’t resist bringing my own flavor to the genre, toeing the lines of film noir and graphic novels,” said Sparke.

Time is a funny thing. A constant that on occasion appears to move at great pace, and at other moments with a glacial trickle. But all my preconceptions about the apparent mutability of time have been thrown out the window with this season of House of the Dragon. Time has moved in a hop, skip and a jump, with actors replacing actors replacing actors. And all the same, despite another six-year gap before this week’s episode, “The Lord of the Tides”, most of these beautiful characters haven’t aged a day. There must be something in the Westerosi water.
Turn of the tides
One person who has aged a day – and quite a lot more – is Paddy Considine’s Viserys. The fact that he’s held on this long, despite viewers witnessing his rotting wound in the first episode (very much like coughing in Act One), is a medical miracle.

Aren’t we all sick to the teeth of British crime thrillers by now? The major broadcasters – BBC, ITV, Channels 4 and 5, they’re all to blame – have whittled down the genre to a slick, revoltingly homogenous formula. Just switch out a few proper nouns, spin a wheel to decide who the killer is, and roll film. The Suspect, ITV’s latest five-episode mystery drama, is made in exactly this mould – if you’d told me I was watching Vigil, or Trigger Point, I’d have believed you. But does that make it bad? Not necessarily.
At the centre of The Suspect is Aidan Turner, playing Joe O’Loughlin, an eminent clinical psychologist whom we meet as he talks a young brain tumour patient down from a ledge. In an instant, he becomes the “rooftop hero doctor” to the world. Privately, however, he’s struggling with a recent diagnosis of early-onset Parkinson’s disease.
