Will Ferrell and Zac Efron Starring in New Comedy From 'You're Cordially Invited' Director
Image
Will Ferrell had already notched his next starring role for Amazon MGM Studios way before the poor reviews for his latest flick, You’re Cordially Invited, hit the internet. However, Zac Efron has now been cast in that same project. The Iron Claw and High School Musical actor will team up with Ferrell for the upcoming movie, Judgement Day, which was originally announced back in November 2024. Believe it or not, this will mark the first time that the Hollywood heavyweights have ever worked together.

The comedy is slated to be directed by none other than Nicholas Stoller. Stoller, who just wrote and helmed the lackluster You’re Cordially Invited, also starring Reese Witherspoon, will reunite with not only Ferrell, but Efron, too. Stoller and Efron famously collaborated on the must-see Neighbors (2014) and its less impressive 2016 sequel, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. Check out the synopsis for the upcoming venture below (per Deadline):...

You’re Cordially Invited Review: Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon clash in this muted wedding comedy
Image
Plot: When two weddings are accidentally booked on the same day at the same venue, each bridal party is challenged with preserving their family’s special moment. In a hilarious battle of determination, the father of the bride and sister of the other bride chaotically go head-to-head as they stop at nothing to uphold an unforgettable celebration for their loved ones.

Review: Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon clashing over competing weddings at the same venue on the same day sounds fun. Even the initial trailer for You’re Cordially Invited gave me some hope that the Nicholas Stoller-directed comedy would give us a one-two punch of actors to root for as they try to undermine one another. With Stoller responsible for some of the funniest romantic comedies of the last decades, including directing Forgetting Sarah Marshall and writing The Muppets, I remained hopeful that this movie would turn out to...

‘You’re Cordially Invited’ Review: Comedy Pros Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell Vow to Ruin One Another’s Weddings
Image
It’s a sign of the times that a good, old-fashioned date movie featuring two of the most bankable movie stars of the early aughts, Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell, is bypassing theaters altogether in early 2025. When it comes to writer-director Nicholas Stoller’s latest rom-com — if that’s the word for a film where two adults set out to sabotage one another’s wedding plans — you’re cordially invited to watch “You’re Cordially Invited” at home. The Prime release should play great at any scale while its stars are crossed at one another, but miscalculates their chemistry in a gratuitous and slightly icky epilogue.

As Jim, Ferrell is the first to be introduced, fussing over his Gen Z daughter, Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan), who disturbs the balance with her widower dad when she announces she’s engaged to Stony Blyden’s one-dimensional Oliver. Ever since Jenni’s mom died, Jim...

Will Ferrell’s ‘You’re Cordially Invited’ Is A Victim of Marketing Malpractice
Image
Last week, I mentioned to a couple of friends that I was going to a press screening for You’re Cordially Invited, the trailer for which came out last month.

One commented that they hoped everyone in attendance had gotten high to survive it. The other said simply that it looked really bad. In that it’s a straight-to-streaming romcom — it drops on Prime Video this Thursday — I could see why they were apprehensive. My concern bloomed into alarm when I walked into the theater and found myself confronted by a full-screen image of the poster, which depicts a horrified Reese Witherspoon looking on as a muddy Will Ferrell wrestles an alligator. Then I had a great time watching a film that was almost entirely unrecognizable from its representation in its promotional materials. I am here to tell you You’re Cordially Invited has been done So dirty by its marketing team...

Emily Blunt Shares Her Daughters' Candid Reactions To Seeing The Devil Wears Prada For The First Time
Image
The Devil Wears Prada star Emily Blunt recalls that her daughters had a funny reaction after watching the film. Released in 2006, The Devil Wears Prada was directed by David Frankel, with a story that follows star Anna Hathaway's Andy Sachs, an aspiring journalist who takes a job at a leading fashion magazine only to find that the magazine editor, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), is a nightmare. Blunt stars in the film as Emily, Miranda's overloaded and highly-strung assistant, and it remains one of the actor's most memorable roles.

In a recent interview with Page Six while attending the 18th Annual American Institute for Stuttering gala, Blunt reveals that her two daughters didn't particularly enjoy her character in The Devil Wears Prada. According to the actor, they ended up thinking that their mother was just like her short-tempered character in the film. Blunt also reflects on her experience in the movie more generally,...

“There’s not even any rhyming to it”: Not Jason Segel, One How I Met Your Mother Star Thought the Show Will Fail Due to the ‘Terrible’ Title
Image
When How I Met Your Mother debuted in 2005, it became popular right away. Under the direction of Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, the show featured Josh Radnor’s character Ted Mosby as he narrated his children the story of how he met their mother, captivating viewers with its unique narrative technique. In addition to Radnor, Neil Patrick Harris’s portrayal of the well-known womanizer Barney Stinson gave the show the necessary comic edge.

Although Harris enjoyed his time on the show, initially he didn’t think the title was really fitting. So much so that he predicted that the sitcom may suffer from the title, ultimately leading to its failure.

Jason Segel: Judd Apatow Went on ‘Revenge Mission’ To Make Freaks and Geeks Cast Stars Following Series Cancellation
Image
Although Freaks and Geeks met an early demise, series executive producer Judd Apatow made it his mission to see the series' young cast succeed. According to the new book by Thea Glassman Freaks, Gleeks, and Dawson’s Creek: How Seven Teen Shows Transformed Television (via IndieWire), actor Jason Segel, who starred in the cult classic series as Nick Andopolis, says Apatow embarked on "a ‘Count of Monte Cristo’–style revenge mission" to make everyone in the cast a star. Apatow worked on his mission by including cast members in future projects.

Freaks and Geeks debuted on NBC in 1999, but was set in the 1980 to 1981 high school year, and followed Lindsay Weir (Linda Cardellini) and her brother Sam (John Francis Daley) as they navigated high school. Jason Segel Says Judd Apatow Made ‘Freaks and Geeks’ Cast Stars Out of ‘Revenge’ for Series Cancellation
Image
Judd Apatow didn’t want his freaks to disappear from Hollywood.

The multi-hyphenate writer/director/producer behind short-lived cult classic NBC series “Freaks and Geeks” was determined not to let the rising stars of the series fall to the wayside after the show’s untimely cancellation, according to actor Jason Segel.

“Freaks and Geeks” revolved around siblings Lindsay (Linda Cardellini) and Sam (John Francis Daley), who try to make friends in their new Detroit high school in 1980. Segel, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Busy Philipps, Martin Starr, and Samm Levine rounded out the ensemble cast for the teen series that ran from 1999 to 2000. Apatow executive-produced the series, created by Paul Feig.

According to Thea Glassman’s new book “Freaks, Gleeks, and Dawson’s Creek: How Seven Teen Shows Transformed Television,” Apatow did not want the series’ cancellation to deter the career paths of the cast.

10 Great Rom-Coms That Bombed At The Box Office
Image
Although they have made lasting impressions on the genre, there are 10 especially great romantic comedy movies that bombed at the box office upon release. While romantic comedies aren’t often seen as reliable blockbusters today, there was once a time when they made up some of the highest-grossing movies of the year, particularly in the Nora Ephron and Nancy Meyers era of the 1990s and 2000s. For instance, My Big Fat Greek Wedding earned over $368 million at the box office in 2002, with some of the best recent romantic comedies like 2013’s About Time still managing to turn a profit by grossing $88.5 million worldwide.

Unfortunately, this commercial success didn’t extend to some of the most iconic romantic comedies. Many rom-coms that have stood the test of time in terms of quality flopped in theaters upon release, including a beloved classic from the 1930s, a cult classic from the 1980s, and...

Jason Segel Reveals He Was ‘Really Unhappy’ During Final Years Of ‘How I Met Your Mother’
Image
Jason Segel is opening up about his time spent on “How I Met Your Mother”, revealing that he was “really unhappy” with his life and career during the final years of the show. The 43-year-old actor, and current star of the Apple TV+ series “Shrinking”, reflected on the hit CBS sitcom during a roundtable interview for The Hollywood Reporter.

“There was a period in my life and career around the last couple of years of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ where things were firing in both movies and TV, and everyone was telling me how well it was going and I was really unhappy,” he revealed.

About a father named Ted recounting his adventures of living with his friends in New York City, “How I Met Your Mother” ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014. During that time, Segel played Marshall Eriksen alongside Josh Radnor as Ted Mosby, Alyson Hannigan as Lily Aldrin,...

5 reasons why Jason Segel will finally get long-overdue Emmy nomination for ‘Shrinking’
Image
Now that the first season of “Shrinking” is fully available to all binge-watchers, it feels particularly urgent to highlight this Apple TV+ series’ lead actor, co-creator, writer and executive producer, Jason Segel. Despite the impressive list of iconic comedic characters like Marshall Eriksen (“How I Met Your Mother”) and Peter Bretter (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”), he has never been nominated for a major TV or film award. With the rising recognition of “Shrinking” and Segel’s undeniable likability factor, the upcoming 2023 Emmy nominations could easily correct that mistake. Here are five reasons why Segel deserves a spot in the Best Comedy Actor category this year.

1. Segel has had an impressive acting career.

At the turn of the century, Judd Appatow’s “Freaks and Geeks” (1999-2000) put Segel on the map as a promising comedy actor. “How I Met Your Mother” (2005-2014) brought him worldwide fame as the adorable, silly goof Marshall Eriksen.

‘Platonic’ Trailer: Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne Are on a Self-Destructive Spiral
Image
Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne are determined to prove that men and women can be totally platonic friends.

The “Neighbors” co-stars lead Apple TV+ comedy “Platonic,” a 10-episode series that both actors executive produce. “Neighbors” helmer Nick Stoller co-created, directed, and co-wrote the show with Francesca Delbanco.

Per the official synopsis, “Platonic” follows a platonic pair of former best friends approaching midlife (Rogen and Byrne) who reconnect after a long rift. Despicable Me Cast & Character Guide
Image
The Despicable Me cast is full of A-list stars playing its lovable animated characters. The movie revolves around a supervillain named Gru, who adopts three girls in a bid to steal the Moon and ends up feeling more fulfilled by fatherhood than evildoing. Despicable Me was a big enough hit to launch a blockbuster franchise. Gru became an endearing character that fans would follow in multiple sequels, and the Minions, introduced in the first of the Despicable Me movies, have become a cultural sensation, headlining their own spinoff movies. Those now-classic characters were brought to life by a fantastic cast of voice actors.

Despicable Me was the first feature-length production mounted by Illumination Entertainment, the animation studio that went on to spearhead the Sing and Secret Life of Pets franchises. It was an immediate hit with both critics and audiences, putting Illumination on the map alongside Pixar and DreamWorks Animation.

Podtalk: Dave Franco & Alison Brie of ‘Somebody I Used to Know’
Image
Chicago – How about a precisely done comedy of romance in time for Valentine’s Day weekend? Prime Video presents “Somebody I Used to Know,” a collaboration between a real-life married couple … director/co-writer Dave Franco (“The Rental”) and co-writer/lead actor Alison Brie.

Alison Brie portrays Ally, a reality show TV host whose series is cancelled, and she is left without direction after this attempt to make it in show business. She decides to go back to her hometown to recharge, and meets her old lover Sean (Jay Ellis), who is about to get married to Cassidy (Kiersey Clemons). After a spark is set off again with Sean, Ally sets out to somehow break up the marriage, and ignites all the problems associated with that goal. “Somebody I Used to Know” streams on Prime Video beginning February 10th.

‘I think I have kind of a Muppety face’: Jason Segel on Shrinking, puppets, and tiring of How I Met Your Mother
Image
For 10 years, Jason Segel was in one of the biggest sitcoms on American television. For the last three of them, he knew he had to get out of it. “They were a hard three years,” he remembers, of his time as the big-hearted Marshall in How I Met Your Mother. “I was really, really in need of doing an artistic check-in, and it was no one’s responsibility but my own.”

That show, along with self-scripted movies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Muppets, catapulted Segel to late-Noughties comedy superstardom in the US. This was the era of Judd Apatow neuroses and the Seth Rogen-verse; Segel was the classically handsome, 6ft 4in giant of the group. He seemed to have it made: total creative control, immense sums of money, wooing everyone from Emily Blunt to Cameron Diaz to Mila Kunis on film. Something nagged at him, though. “The show was fantastic.

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: February 2023
Image
February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.

This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.

The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

Nicholas Stoller tried to make a Brokeback parody in Bros—but no straight actors would do it

Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane in Bros Image: Nicole Rivelli/Universal Pictures Bros is by no means cinema’s first queer rom-com. ‘Bros’ Review: Billy Eichner’s Self-Deprecating Gay Rom-Com Lets Everyone in on the Joke
Image
It’s 2022, and a Hollywood studio has just made a movie in which two men fall in love and can’t figure out what to do about it. No one dies of AIDS. No one gets tire-ironed on the side of the road. Judd Apatow produced the thing, so you know it’s funny. And yet, somehow, “Bros” doesn’t feel like that big a deal. Sure, it’s a well-budgeted, wide-release, R-rated gay rom-com, and that’s historic (if you put enough qualifying adjectives in front of it), but one of those had to come along sooner or later. Oddly, it feels like there already have been others, and there’s no question more are coming, considering how hard Hollywood has been working to include gay characters.

The difference in what we’ll call “Billy Eichner’s Hollywood Screen Kiss” is that it centers a gay character, instead of...

‘Bros’ Toronto Review: Billy Eichner’s History-Making Gay Rom-Com Also Happens To Be Damn Funny
Image
The major studio rom-com is back with a flourish, but it took Billy Eichner and Nicholas Stoller to prove the format still works, even if this time it is two gay men who are the ones who find love against all odds.

Although Bros is indeed making history as the first major studio film with an all LGBTQ principal cast, and the first to star and be co-written by an openly gay man, ultimately what it has to say about how hard it is to find the perfect someone to spend your life with is truly universal. Don’t get me wrong. Much of the humor in Bros comes from situations and attitudes specific to gay culture, but you don’t have to be gay to laugh out loud at most of it.

It must be seen in a theater as I did tonight with a rollicking full house at...

Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Anthony Michael Hall in Breakfast Club (1985)
“The Breakfast Club” and “Pineapple Express,” both classics within their own genres, will be leaving Hulu in July, along with a host of other films. If you want to relive Judd Nelson’s performance as delinquent John Bender or the antics of Seth Rogen and James Franco, don’t forget to catch up on these flicks before July 31.

If you haven’t already celebrated Meryl Streep’s birthday by watching one of her arguably best performances in “The Devil Wears Prada,” stream this fashion comedy before it leaves Hulu this month as well. Thankfully you’ll still be able to stream this thinly-veiled critique of Vogue’s Anna Wintour on Prime Video. That’s all.

Other notable titles that won’t be available on the streaming service after July include “I Am Not Your Negro,” “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” “Easy A” and a slew of the Resident Evil films,...

‘Bros’ Nsfw Trailer: Billy Eichner Leads the First Gay Rom-Com From a Major Studio
Billy Eichner at an event for The Oscars (2015)
Universal Pictures has released the first – and decidedly Nsfw – trailer for the upcoming romantic comedy “Bros,” and it paints a hilarious portrait of a gay man trying to find love.

In a meta twist, Billy Eichner co-wrote and stars in the film as a podcast host who’s enlisted to write a gay romantic comedy, and the story follows his burgeoning relationship with a man played by Luke Macfarlane (“Killjoys”). Described as a “smart, swoony and heartfelt comedy” the story chronicles “how hard it is to find another tolerable human being to go through life with.”

“Bros” is a first in a number of ways. Eichner is the first openly gay man to co-write and star in his own major studio film, and the movie features an entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast including Ts Madison (“The Ts Madison Experience”), Monica Raymund (“Chicago Fire”), Guillermo Díaz (“Scandal”), Guy Branum (“The Other Two...

Sur ordre de Dieu (2022)
Hulu New Releases: April 2022
Sur ordre de Dieu (2022)
Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.

It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.

April 1 sees the usual arrival of library film titles. Looper,...

Image
Exclusive: Rhys Ifans (Spider-Man: No Way Home) has signed on to star alongside Annette Bening and Jodie Foster in the Netflix film Nyad, which marks the narrative directorial debut of Oscar, BAFTA and Emmy winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin.

Pic is based on Diana Nyad’s bestselling autobiography Find A Way. It follows the remarkable true story of the marathon swimmer, who, at the age of 64, became the first person to complete the “Everest of swims”—executing a 53-hour, 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida, through dangerous open ocean, without a shark cage.

Ifans is playing John Bartlett, the Florida-based boat designer and captain of the catamaran that accompanied Diana as she swam. Bartlett strategically and meticulously planned and navigated Nyad’s swim though the Florida Straits, keenly aware of the impact of weather and ocean currents on her journey.
