Lawrence Leung's Choose Your Own Adventure

1 review
7/10

Sweet Aussie nerd comedy

I honestly thought I wouldn't like Choose Your Own Adventure but Lawrence won me over pretty quickly with his 80s references and willingness to put himself on the line to get to the end of each of his adventures. Plus he's a total geek (and so am I) so there was a lot of common ground. I'm not sure of the wider appeal of this show so maybe someone who is not a geek that grew up in the 80s can comment.

His style reminds me a little of Jon Safran in that: the material is personal and often relates to his childhood; the situations he gets into are sometimes confrontational; and he gets out and talks to a lot of different people; but I would say Lawrence is not derivative of John Safran, just similar. I quite often find myself unable to watch this kind of television especially when things start to get a little creepy or out of control and go pear-shaped but just when I found myself reaching for the remote, almost unable to bear any more, something awesome would happen to turn the tension into laughs. And it's all done with a lot of heart, too, which is what made this show stand out to me. There's too much "nasty" comedy around so Choose Your Own Adventure makes a refreshing change. I especially loved the reality check in the sections where Lawrence's parents were involved. I hope to see more Lawrence Leung and his beard on the TV in the future.
