Video Exclusive: David Koechner On Working With Leslie Uggams In ‘Dotty & Soul’
Image
The new film Dotty & Soul sees a tech CEO Ethan Cox (Adam Saunders) face social media backlash after wearing a problematic Halloween costume. In an effort to ameliorate the situation, he hires snack cart vendor Dotty (Leslie Uggams) to act as the company’s figurehead while he still controls the company behind the scenes. However, when Dotty decides to no longer play along as Cox’s puppet, everything changes.

In an exclusive interview with uInterview founder Erik Meers, star David Koechner discussed his character and experience working with legendary actress and singer Uggams.

“I think you’d have to agree that [my character] Brannigan turns out to be the villain. If we think thematically, he represents greed… He’ll pretend he’s out for you if it helps him,” he said.

When describing his approach to roles he takes as a comedic actor, Koechner said, “I always think you’re the defense attorney of your character.

Dotty & Soul Review: Preachy Cancel Culture Comedy Runs Thin
Image
An uber flamboyant tech CEO hires a Black nursing home worker to front his company after a racist social media posting. Dotty & Soul delivers its power to the working class message via satirical fire hose in the blink of an eye. The film skewers unbridled capitalism, economic inequality, and bro business culture in '80s throwback comedic style. It's loaded with humorous zingers but lacks substantive exposition and character development with a meager script. Dotty & Soul clocks in at a preachy 88 minutes with credits. There's just not enough meat on the bone here.

Ethan Cox (Adam Saunders), sporting a pink zebra-print suit and bedazzled cowboy boots, is on top of the world. Private Car, his automated driving company, is about to be acquired for a staggering 10-figure sum. He revels in adulation as the business world fawns. Bob Brannigan (David Koechner), a ruthless venture capitalist who funded Cox,...

In an effort to save his company, he hires 71-year-old Dotty (Leslie Uggams) to be the company’s public figure. Suddenly, no longer satisfied with being Ethan’s puppet, Dotty starts sharing her own opinions, throwing everyone for a loop.

In an exclusive interview with uInterview founder Erik Meers, Saunders and Uggams sat down to discuss what they learned about each other throughout the movie.

“Working with Leslie was incredible because, you know, obviously she’s a legend of stage and screen and this was the first movie that I was directing,” Saunders began. “On day one, you know, she put me right at ease, but we already had a good report because we had talked a lot before you know she joined the cast,...
