Jackie en Oopjen

I was shocked, and frankly disgusted, to see that Disney chose to produce a cheerful family film centered around Oopjen Coppit, a historical figure directly tied to the Dutch colonial elite. Oopjen was the wife of Marten Soolmans, whose wealth came in part from the sugar trade a trade that was deeply rooted in the transatlantic slave economy. Oopjen's own family also profited from this system of exploitation.

Yet here, in Jackie and Oopjen, she's turned into a whimsical, lovable time-traveling character, as if her historical background is just a quirky footnote, rather than part of a violent and oppressive legacy.

It is deeply troubling to see Disney gloss over this history and package it as innocent fun. Turning the legacy of slavery into a light-hearted children's adventure is not only tone-deaf it's irresponsible. There's nothing entertaining about colonial wealth built on the suffering of others.

This film should never have been made in this way. Disney, you should be ashamed.
