“There’s an epidemic of knife crime amongst young, young lads … up and down the country.” That’s how British star Stephen Graham (Bodies, Boiling Point) describes the origins of the idea for his Netflix crime drama Adolescence, which premieres on Thursday, during a recent Next on Netflix event in London. The show, unfolding in real-time, consists of four episodes that are each filmed in one continuous shot.
The story starts with 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) being arrested for the murder of a teenage girl who goes to his school. Co-creator and co-writer Graham stars as his father Eddie. Rounding out the cast are Ashley Walters (Top Boy) as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, Erin Doherty (The Crown) as Briony Ariston, the clinical psychologist assigned to Jamie’s case, Christine Tremarco (The Responder) as Jamie’s mother Manda, Faye Marsay (Game of Thrones), Mark Stanley (Happy Valley), Jo Hartley (After Life) and Amélie Pease.

Low-budget horror is often a subgenre in itself that many people seem to love – the latest big hit, The Terrifier franchise, very much started off as this – but low-budget sci-fi doesn’t quite have the same reputation. This is a little bit of a shame because I have found that writers and directors often come up with some really clever and special ideas when they have a limited budget for their science fiction movies.
It’s obvious from the start that Good Neighbours has a low budget and these limitations may hold it back a little but it still shouldn’t put you off. A woman’s first interaction with her new neighbours is an unusual one, as when she calls around to introduce herself, she finds they answer the door while completely naked.

“Game of Thrones” star Natalie Dormer is set to lead new Celyn Jones thriller series “Minotaur” alongside “Call My Agent’s” Assaad Bouab.
Jones writes and directs the six-part Welsh/French drama, which he created and will be produced via Mad As Birds (“The Almond and The Seahorse”), the prod-co he runs with Sean Marley. Charles Sturridge (“Marcella”) will also direct.
“Minotaur” follows Luc (Bouab), a cold-blooded killer who escapes Paris’s criminal underbelly for the more prosaic North Wales. There he meets Angel (Dormer) who lives in a struggling community she feels she can never belong to, raising her son Joe alone.
“Whilst fighting addiction, Angel gravitates towards the mysterious Luc,” reads the logline. “But as an initial attraction grows stronger and promises a fresh start for both, the past looks determined to drag Luc back into a dangerous underworld. Where does all the evil go? Know your shadows and beware the Minotaur.

Exclusive: The creator of Prime Video’s The Rig has detailed how he wanted to strike a balance between penning an entertaining drama and tackling existential debates around climate change.
David Macpherson has expanded the second season of the UK hit beyond the confines of Season 1’s oil rig, which he described as akin to Alien and its expansion for sequel Aliens in the 1980s.
The series from the former environmental policy worker tackles numerous themes and looks to the harm our planet is experiencing today, but Macpherson stressed that he is cognisant of the need to entertain.

Here’s the first glimpses of Adolescence, the Netflix crime drama series starring Stephen Graham, Ashley Walters and Erin Doherty.
The four-part series — from Graham and his regular collaborators Jack Thorne Philip Barantini — is notable for each episode being shot in one continuous take as the action unfolds in real time. It’s due to launch on Netflix next year and counts Brad Pitt among its exec producers. You can see the images above and below.
Adolescence will mark a first role for Owen Cooper, who plays a 13-year-old teenage boy who is arrested for the murder of a girl at his school. Graham (Boiling Point) plays his father and ‘appropriate’ adult, while Walters (Top Boy) plays a detective inspector and Soherty (The Crown) a clinical psychologist assigned to the case.
Faye Marsay (Game of Thrones), Christine Tremarco (The Responder), Mark Stanley (Happy Valley), Jo Hartley (After Life) and newcomer Amélie Pease also star.

British crime dramas, comedies, mysteries and procedurals are becoming more and more popular. And platforms like Britbox make these series more accessible to people from all around the world. Britbox has some of the best and most popular British TV shows, from Sherlock to Line of Duty. There are also some underrated cult classics available on Britbox, like The It Crowd, which almost had an American remake.
British TV series are popular because of their character-driven narrative and limited episodes, which gives the storylines enough time to develop without including too many filler episodes. Many British TV series are also based on books by popular authors like Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Peter James. And while there are many great TV series on Britbox, the best shows will captivate audiences from start to finish.

It was no small feat to get “Saturday Night Live” off the ground at NBC, and as a result, the cast of “Saturday Night” is pretty huge. In many cases, the actors also look eerily similar to the people they’re playing.
Hitting theaters everywhere on Oct. 11 after a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles, Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” tells the story of the 90 minutes right before the first-ever episode of “SNL.” It’s chaotic and at the time, even Lorne Michaels couldn’t explain what the show was going to be.
Below, you’ll find the cast of “Saturday Night” alongside what their real-life counterparts looked like back then.

Super-indie Fremantle has made a strategic shift to center premium film productions within its global business model, global drama exec Seb Shorr said this morning during a keynote at Iberseries and Platino Industria in Madrid.
Shorr, joined by Fremantle’s Mexican Head of Scripted Manuel Martí, and Olivia Sleiter, Head of Production at Fremantle Italy, said the company has been on a “journey” from its traditional position as an “entertainment and nonscripted powerhouse” with formats like Idol, Got Talent and The X Factor.
“The TV drama journey at Fremantle was really started seven or eight years ago,” Shorr said. “And while we’ve always done a bit of film, over the last few years, we very much now want that to be a really important part of our portfolio and a major part of our business.”

The trend of demand for “mainstream” TV series and growth in Fremantle’s film business — thanks to the likes of Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, starring Daniel Craig, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Pablo Larraín’s Maria starring Angelina Jolie — were among the key topics of debate for executives from the production giant in Madrid on Wednesday on the second day of the fourth edition of Iberseries & Platino Industria.
Seb Shorr, COO, global drama at Fremantle U.K., Olivia Sleiter, head of production, global drama, and Manuel Martí, head of scripted development at Fremantle Latin America appeared during a spotlight panel session.
“We have a good amount, I think now it’s 17,” Sleiter said about Fremantle’s growing film business. “It’s film for cinemas and films for TV as well.” Among others, she mentioned that Element Pictures, in which the firm owns a majority stake, has worked with Yorgos Lanthimos “and is now shooting his next movie.

A trio of British TV behemoths have said there are too many production companies as the middle falls out of the market.
Banijay UK boss Patrick Holland, It’s a Sin exec Nicola Shindler and BBC iplayer/channels chief Dan McGolpin all roundly agreed that the amount of work currently in the ether is unsustainable for the number of indies when questioned during this morning’s big panel at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
“You can’t sugarcoat it,” said McGolpin. “There aren’t enough money and hours to keep everyone alive.”
Holland said “in terms of sheer economics there are too many indies for the amount of hours,” while Shindler posited that “there are a lot of talented people who aren’t getting a look in.”
The issue has been perennially debated on Edinburgh panels down the years but during today’s debate it felt particularly stark.

Chris Carson (Martin Freeman) is trying to be better—on and off the job—in The Responder Season 2. But as we see in the first two episodes already streaming on BritBox (two more drop on July 18 and 25), that’s not so easy. He wants a day job to get off the night shift and therefore be able to spend more time with his daughter, but it’s not in the cards. He may have a way to get that, but it means doing something shady for Debs (Amaka Okafor), which only results in him and Rachel (Adelayo Adedayo) becoming entangled in quite the mess and owing the wrong person money; they have to pick up drugs for Jodie (Faye McKeever) for money. So things can only go up for Chris from here … right? TV Insider spoke with Freeman and writer Tony Schumacher ...

The Responder is one of those rare cop dramas that cut to the quick, leaving you in a state of reflective, not entirely unpleasant, unease. It's entirely worth your time. No, it's not a novel concept -- a first responder on the emergency line drags himself from crisis to crisis (of varying scale), nor is it a radical reinvention of the tried and true. It's just a solid slab of TV entertainment that knows its material inside and out.
The hard-pressed police officer pushed to the brink of what could reasonably be expected of anyone -- let alone the average citizen who rarely, if ever, gets into adrenalized circumstances on a similar par -- is a character type that we've grown to love as a movie and TV-viewing audience. From the hapless careerists who come against the strictures of organized enforcement agencies to the trigger-happy officers who drag themselves and colleagues into terrible scenarios,...
