Nearly two years have passed since Netflix debuted a new season of Black Mirror, even if it feels like much longer. The streamer has finally unveiled a trailer and new images for the upcoming seventh season, along with announcing an April 10, 2025 premiere date.

“You can expect a mix of genres and styles,” stated series creator Charlie Brooker during the 2024 Geeked Week festival. “We’ve got six episodes this time, and two of them are basically feature-length. Some of them are deeply unpleasant, some are quite funny, and some are emotional.”

Among them is the much-anticipated sequel to one of Black Mirror‘s most popular, critically acclaimed episodes, season four’s “USS Callister.” The sequel marks the first time Brooker has ever revisited any of the previous six seasons’ episodes.

Black Mirror fans are in for a treat. Season 7 of the beloved anthology TV series has just received a series of updates.

Netflix has officially unveiled the trailer for the upcoming Season 7. With the trailer release also came a series of first-look photos from Charlie Brooker’s epic Netflix anthology, as well as an announcement of all the new and returning cast members. Among them is The Bear's Will Poulter.

Netflix officially announced that Black Mirror Season 7 will consist of six episodes and is set to premiere on the platform on April 10.

"You can expect a mix of genres and styles," the show's creator teased during Netflix’s annual Geeked Week festival in September, per Tudum. "We’ve got six episodes this time, and two of them are basically feature-length. Some of them are deeply unpleasant, some are quite funny, and some are emotional."

It’s back to basics in many ways.

Because the world does not feel dystopian enough, “Black Mirror” is finally releasing its Season 7 premiere date. The sci-fi anthology from Charlie Brooker will return on April 10 with six new episodes.

This new season will contain a previously announced followup to the Emmy-winning “USS Callister” starring Cristin Milioti. Fittingly, the trailer for this new season starts with Milioti’s Lieutenant Cole gasping as an unseen voice says “We’d like to welcome you back.”

The trailer then cycles between clips of wild scenarios that are never fully explained. One minute, a man is putting on a Batman mask. The next, Issa Rae is being transported into a black-and-white world filled with AI people. Still the next, Rashida Jones collapses like a powered off robot while pitching cereal in front of a class of children. You know, classic “Black Mirror” stuff.

Black Mirror has finally set a return date and along with the release date announcement, Netflix has dropped a captivating trailer and slew of photos teasing the forthcoming episodes.

The trailer (below) merges the new episodes into one cohesive tease for the dystopian series, set to a foreboding cover of “Dream a Little Dream.” The clips and snippets span genres and introduce the star-studded cast, as creator-writer Charlie Brooker once again plans to tackle predictive sci-fi stories that will touch on AI, human consciousness and technology.

The six-episode season releases April 10 on Netflix.

Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light took top honors at the 2025 International Cinephile Society (Ics) Awards, winning best picture, director, and ensemble. “All We Imagine as Light” world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the grand prize of the festival, along with a flurry of international awards. It also went on earn nominations at the Golden Globes and the BAFTA’s, among others.

The International Cinephile Society praised Kapadia’s film for highlighting “the voices, the faces, the night-lit trains of vibrant modern India.” The film revolves around a trip of women from different generations who form a quiet sisterhood to find their own peace amidst daunting personal and cultural issues.

“Nickel Boys,” RaMell Ross’s Oscar-nominated drama about Black teenagers caged in an abusive reform school, took best adapted screenplay honors for Ross and Joslyn Barnes, who wrote the script based on the book by Colson Whitehead.

Long-in-gestation sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues has been picked up for distribution in the US, with its cinema release set for September 2025.

This news goes to 11. The sequel to the masterpiece rock-doc parody film “This Is Spinal Tap” is set to hit theaters this fall. Bleecker Street has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” the film from director Rob Reiner that has Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer all reprising their roles as England’s loudest — and most punctual — rock band.

The film will get a wide release on September 12, and in anticipation of that, Bleecker Street is also re-releasing a newly-restored edition of the 1984 original film back in to theaters this summer. Film Independent handed out its 2025 Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 22), in a Santa Monica ceremony that saw Anora claim three prizes for best feature, director Sean Baker, and lead performance Mikey Madison in the gender-neutral category.

Sean Wang’s Didi took two prizes for best first feature and first screenplay, whileGints Zilbalodis’s Latvian animation Flow won international film and No Other Land was named best documentary. A Real Pain also nabbed two awards for screenplay and supporting actor Kieran Culkin.

While it is too late for the Spirit Awards to have any bearing on the Oscars next weekend...

The 40th annual Independent Spirit Awards took place in Santa Monica on Feb. 22, with Aidy Bryant as host for the second year in a row.

“Anora” was the biggest winner of the day, being named best feature while Sean Baker and Mikey Madison took home individual trophies for best director and lead performance. “Baby Reindeer” also won big, with Richard Gadd, Nava Mau and Jessica Gunning clinching the awards for lead, supporting and breakthrough performance, though “Shogun” won best new scripted series. And Sean Wang’s “Dìdi” clinched both awards in the debut film category: best first feature as well as best first first screenplay.

“Anora” won Best Feature at the the 40th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, which took place on Saturday afternoon in Santa Monica and was hosted for the second year in a row by Aidy Bryant. “Anora’s” Indie Spirit win follows its recent triumphs at the DGA and PGA awards and boosts its chances for Oscar glory next week. “Anora” also won Best Director for Sean Baker and Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison. Repeating her victory at the BAFTAs, Madison beat Demi Moore, who had been considered the solid frontrunner.

In many ways, the Indie Spirit Awards followed a pattern it has shown in recent years: Anytime its voters can give a statuette to an Oscar-nominated film or performance, they do. This year’s Spirit nominations included Oscar nominees in seven different categories — and in every one of those categories, the Academy-approved entry won.

The 16th annual African American Film Critics Association (Aafca) Awards brought together industry figures to recognize Black artists and filmmakers. Tyler Perry made a brief stop in Los Angeles to present the Beacon Award to Nicole Avant, producer of The Six Triple Eight, before flying out again the same night.

“There’s so many attacks on who we are, what our stories are,” Perry said on stage, stressing the importance of supporting Black storytellers. He described Avant as “Hollywood royalty,” highlighting her role as the daughter of philanthropist Jacqueline Avant and music executive Clarence Avant.

Avant expressed appreciation for receiving the honor, saying her parents would have been proud. “I’m sure they are beaming down. My mom would always tell me to go out in the world and be the light. Choose which side you’re on, and then play ball,” she said.

Tyler Perry made a special trip to Los Angeles to present his friend Nicole Avant with the Beacon Award at the 16th annual African American Film Critics Association Awards.

“I don’t know why I’m working like I’m still broke,” Perry joked about arriving at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel straight from the airport, then hopping back on the plane when the show was over.

But the quick roundtrip was necessary to support Aafca’s mission of uplifting Black storytellers — “especially in this climate when there’s so many attacks on who we are, what our stories are,” Perry said — and to salute Avant, who he emphasized is “Hollywood royalty” as the daughter of the late Jacqueline Avant, a philanthropist, and Clarence Avant, the music executive known as “The Black Godfather.”

On the red carpet, Nicole Avant told Variety her parents would be proud to see her receive this specific honor.

Nora Fingscheidt’s indie adaptation of the 2016 Amy Liptrot novel is coming to both Netflix in the United Kingdom and the United States following the movie’s theatrical run and marks the first time it’s been available on a streaming platform. Amazon MGM Studios’ adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Nickel Boys emerged as the top winner at the 25th Black Reel Awards. The film earned six honors during Monday’s virtual ceremony, including Outstanding Film and Outstanding Director for RaMell Ross.

Produced by Joslyn Barnes, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and David Levin, Nickel Boys also received awards for Outstanding Screenplay, Outstanding Emerging Director, Outstanding First Screenplay, and Outstanding Cinematography. The film’s recognition comes on the heels of its nominations for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars.

Amazon MGM Studios’ Nickel Boys won a leading six awards Monday at the Black Reel Awards, including the group’s marquee Outstanding Film Award and Outstanding Director for RaMell Ross.

The awards, celebrating their 25th edition, honors the year’s best in Black cinematic excellence, were handed out Monday in a virtual ceremony.

Nickel Boys, adapted from Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and nominated for the Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay Oscars, also won tonight for Outstanding Screenplay, Outstanding Emerging Director, Outstanding First Screenplay and Outstanding Cinematography.

Netflix’s The Piano Lesson won four awards including Outstanding Supporting Performance for Danielle Deadwyler, Outstanding Ensemble, Outstanding Hairstyling & Makeup and Outstanding Production Design.

Other notable winners tonight included Hard Truths star Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who won the gender-neutral Outstanding Lead Performance award. The Mike Leigh film also won Outstanding International Film.

Edward Berger, hot from his double-whammy Best Film and Outstanding British Film wins for Conclave at the Ee BAFTA Film Awards, wanted to stop by the Searchlight after-party at Soho House’s Greek Street to laud Rising Star winner David Jonsson.

“He’s not a show-off,” an impressed Berger tells me after greeting Jonsson.

“[It] tells you a lot. Feet on the ground, incredibly laid back and I wanted to congratulate him,” Berger adds as he watches the Rye Lane and Alien: Romulus actor being feted by a group that included Olivia Homan, his agent at United Talent, and Ellie Norton his publicist at Track Publicity.

Berger notes that he was taken by a comment Jonsson made during his acceptance speech.

“Star? I don’t know, but rising, I guess,” was the Jonsson line that Berger favored.

“I liked his humility,” the filmmaker tells me.

Rising star Mikey Madison levels up her acting career after bagging the Leading Actress award at the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards. Primarily known for her stints in FX’s Better Things and the horror movie Scream, she graced Sean Baker’s screwball comedy film Anora last year.

Conclave and The Brutalist tied with four wins at the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards, announced on January 16th during a ceremony hosted by David Tennant. Anora, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Perez, A Real Pain, Wicked, and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Foul each picked up two awards, and David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus) was the recipient of this year’s Ee Rising Star Award.

Adrien Brody, Mikey Madison, Zoe Saldaña, and Kieran Culkin took home their first BAFTA Film Awards wins. Warwick Davis was honored with the BAFTA Fellowship in recognition of “his work as an actor and for using his platform to challenge societal prejudice and champion self-empowerment, advocating that people with dwarfism can and do lead full and meaningful lives.”

From Edward Berger’s Conclave sweeping multiple categories to The Brutalist making a late surge with wins for Best Director and Best Actor, the evening was filled with surprises and emotional speeches. Mikey Madison’s unexpected win for Anora had everyone talking, while Emilia Perez and Wallace And Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl continued their strong awards season run. Although this award season has offered a plethora of great films and performances that are in contention to take home trophies, the Best Supporting Actress race at the Academy Awards has been slightly underwhelming. Despite the worthy contenders that didn’t make the race, such as Michele Austin in Hard Truths or Carol Kane in Between the Temples, there aren’t many of the actual nominees that were that impressive; Zoe Saldañais nominated for what is essentially a lead role in Emilia Pérez, Isabella Rossellini had little more than a cameo in Conclave, Ariana Grandegave a very one-note performance in Wicked, and Monica Barbaro did impressive work in A Complete Unknownthat was unfortunately let down by the film’s muted depiction of its female characters. Even if it's unlikely she will actually take home the prize, Felicity Jones deserves to win the Best Supporting Actor for her devastating performance in The Brutalist.

Whatever else happened at this year’s Bafta ceremony, it provided us with a very exciting star-is-born moment. Mikey Madison broke ahead of a densely packed crowd of best-actress contenders (in which only the hapless Karla Sofía Gascón was really lagging behind) to win the Bafta for her wonderfully smart, funny, charismatic and vulnerable performance in Sean Baker’s Anora, playing a New York table dancer who gets a Vegas wedding to a Russian oligarch’s son. The 2025 Oscar race took a detour across the pond on Sunday as the BAFTA Film Awards were handed out, with the hometown favorite Conclave finishing on top.

Conclave came in with a leading 12 nominations, and it finished with four overall wins — Best Film, Best British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing — on an evening when voters spread the wealth. The Brutalist scored for Best Director (Brady Corbet) and Best Actor (Adrien Brody). The Best Actress race featured a surprise, with Anora star Mikey Madison upsetting Golden Globe and Critics Choice winner Demi Moore (The Substance). It was an otherwise quiet night for Anora, with just one other win for Best Casting after a scorching weeklong stretch that saw the film rack up top prizes from the Critics Choice, Directors Guild, Producers Guild, and Writers Guild.

Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) continued their domination of the supporting categories.

This evening saw the cream of the crop of thespian artists as well as filmmakers assemble at London’s Royal Festival Hall for this year’s BAFTA awards hosted by David Tennant.

This year’s nominations saw 12 nominations for ‘Conclave,’ 11 nominations for ‘Emilia Pérez,’ While ‘The Brutalist’ received 9 nominations. 7 nominations for ‘Anora,’ ‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Wicked.’

Anora The Brutalist A Complete Unknown Winner – Conclave...

The Ee BAFTA Film Awards happened this evening at the Royal Festival Hall in London, hosted once more by David Tennant.

Poking fun at Trump during his monologue, Tennant also offered the usual celebrity gags and had several stars singing part of The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)".

Cautioning audience members that there would not be an intermission as with nominated epic The Brutalist, Tennant also admonished winners to "keep your speeches the opposite of your films: nice and short."

A somewhat surprising addition to the night (though perhaps not given their presence on the soundtracks for both Better Man and Anora) was a performance of "Greatest Day" by Take That.

Mikey Madison is the Leading Actress winner at the 2025 BAFTAs!

The 25-year-old Anora star won the big prize at the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards at The Royal Festival Hall on Sunday (February 16) in London, England.

Mikey was up against some stiff competition for the award. She beat out Cynthia Erivo in Wicked, Marianne Jean-Baptiste in Hard Truths, Saoirse Ronan in The Outrun, Demi Moore in The Substance, and the controversial Karla Sofía Gascón in Emilia Pérez.

The annual celebration of film is taking place Sunday (February 16) at Royal Festival Hall in London, England. Doctor Who actor David Tennant is hosting for the second year in a row.

This year, Conclave scored the most nominations with 12 total. Emilia Pérez is in second place, with 11 nominations this year.

“Conclave” won Best Film at the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards, leading the pack with four BAFTAs overall. The British equivalent of the Oscars took place February 16 from the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in central London, honoring the best in film for its 78th annual edition.

Edward Berger’s “Conclave” led all films with 12 BAFTA nominations, and it won Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, and Best Editing. It’s an upset after “Anora” swept all three of the DGAs, PGAs, and WGAs. The last film to win those three prizes, but not Best Picture at the Oscars was “Brokeback Mountain,” but then again, it did win the BAFTA for Best Film.

As the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards got underway on Sunday in London, a slew of stars hit the red carpet. At a BAFTA Awards where there was no clear frontrunner going into the ceremony, British Academy voters chose to largely share the spoils when it came to handing out honors.

But only one could win the top prize of best film, and this year that went to “Conclave,” which had entered the night with the most number of nominations (11). Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller wound up tying with Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” with four BAFTA wins each. Of its four, the 3.5-hour American epic won leading actor for Adrien Brody and director for Corbet.

Meanwhile, there was a surprise when Mikey Madison was named leading actress for “Anora” (one of two wins for Sean Baker’s sex worker comedy), with “The Substance” star Demi Moore’s seem by many as sure bet. Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror instead took home one award, for makeup and hairstyling.

With each passing year the attention paid to the Bafta film awards turns up a notch, as campaigns jostle and reposition themselves in the quest for the real prize: an Academy Award. The Oscar race is pretty open this year, even more so after the Emilia Pérez debacle, but with its British centre of gravity and slightly differing nominations list, the Baftas have their own dynamic. Hence the Baftas can sometimes seem to be a fairground-mirror reflection of the American contest, or (looked at the other way) an assertion of a similar but separate cultural identity.

Sean Baker’s Anora, written by Baker, and Nickel Boys, written by RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes, took the top film prizes at the 77th annual Writers Guild Awards tonight, for Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay, respectively. On the TV side, it was a big night for HBO/Max, which won the Comedy Series award (Hacks), Limited Series (The Penguin), Comedy/Variety Series and Specials and TV & Streaming Movie categories, as well as for Disney/FX’s Shōgun, which topped the Drama & New Series fields.

Over the last six years, thanks in the main to the SVOD revolution, Spain, once known for select auteurs – Pedro Almodóvar, J.A. Bayona, Fernando Trueba – has stepped fully onto the world stage as a European film and TV power.

Appropriately then, Spain is the Country in Focus 2025 at Berlin Festival’s European Film Market. Its movie strand says much about Spanish cinema, while Berlin, at large, points up Spain’s larger film industry challenges, shared by much of Europe.

The Focus’ biggest takeaway is Spain’s dramatic explosion of new talent, both producers and directors. Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics has announced winners for the 2025 Dorian Awards, and it’s great news for genre fare like The Substance, Wicked, and I Saw the TV Glow.

Mubi’s body-horror movie The Substance won a leading five trophies, including Film of the Year, Demi Moore (Best Lead Performance), and Coralie Fargeat (Best Director), while Universal’s film adaptation of the Wicked musical claimed honors for Ariana Grande (Best Supporting Performance), Cynthia Erivo (Lgbtqia+ Film Trailblazer), and Jonathan Bailey (Rising Star).

Both movies are going head-to-head for Best Film, where the other three nominees are A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez.

The Brutalist, which scored nine total BAFTA bids, is now forecasted to dominate the field by winning five trophies: Best Film, Best Director for Brady Corbet, Best Actor for Adrien Brody, Best Cinematography, and Best Score. Studiocanal has appointed Alex Hamilton as the company’s Chief International Officer and Katheryn Needham has been promoted to UK CEO.

As chief international officer, Hamilton will oversee direct distribution and operations across the company’s nine European territories as well as Studiocanal’s kids and family business.

Hamilton was previously appointed CEO of Studiocanal UK in 2020. Before joining StudioCanal, he was President of International Film and Managing Director of Entertainment One UK. He also led the company’s film operations outside of North America as President of International Film. He was in that role from 2016 to 2019.

Needham replaces Hamilton as CEO. She has previously held the position of Managing Director at Studiocanal UK and was previously the Interim CEO of the company’s Kids & Family business.

Veteran film director Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths is a powerful drama about two sisters, Pansy and Chantelle, primarily focusing on unresolved trauma and its impact on family dynamics. I felt that the film is wrongfully categorized as a comedy-drama; the slight element of comedy present is deeply rooted in the discomfort of a character, and it is not really the sort of thing you’re supposed to laugh at. Marianne Jean-Baptiste offers a class in acting with the range of emotions she demonstrated as Pansy, and Michele Austin’s calm presence as Chantelle adds balance and warmth. Hard Truths is a family drama where a lot remains unsaid and unaddressed, and one day the bottled-up feelings explode, and what follows is what the film attempts to get at.
