Antonio Banderas' Underrated Zorro Sequel Is Slicing Its Way to a New Streaming Home
Image
Nearly three decades ago, Antonio Banderas debuted as the famous masked vigilante Zorro in the 1998 Western film, The Mask of Zorro, and returned in the same capacity in the 2005 sequel, The Legend of Zorro. This follow-up has now landed a new streaming home as reported by Cbr, bringing Banderas’ beloved character to life again. Also starring in the film was Catherine Zeta-Jones reprising her role from The Mask of Zorro as the titular hero’s spouse, Elena, with Rufus Sewellas the villain, Count Armand.

The Legend of Zorro arrives on Netflix on Sunday, June 1, about twenty years after launching in theaters on October 28, 2005. Columbia Pictures released the movie then, and it did averagely well at the box office, earning $142.4 million, nearly twice its budget of $75 million. Unfortunately, it also received poor reviews from critics, with a 27% "Rotten" score on Rotten Tomatoes, while the consensus stated, “Zorro can survive a lot of things,...

Series Mania’s Coming Next From Spain Ranges From An Anticipated LGBTQ+ Musical to a New High Profile Hit Period Drama to a U.S.-Backed Psycho-Thriller
Image
A highly anticipated LGBTQ+ musical series (“Mariliendre”), a psychological thriller involving a standout U.S. indie producer-distributor (“Innate”) and a pre-sales hit period drama (“La Favorita 1922”) feature in Coming Next from Spain, a showcase of newest Spanish premium content.

Unspooling March 25 at Series Mania, organized by Icex Spain Trade and Investment’s umbrella organization, Audiovisual from Spain, the event targets buyers and international press, putting the spotlight on some of the most promising Spanish series produced by the country’s top leading companies.

Spain and its content have become a worldwide phenomenon. Think megahits “Money Heist” and “Elite,” which started conquering the TV fiction market seven years ago.

That fire left embers, as proved by recent hits such as the first season of “Berlin,” a “Money Heist” spin-off, toplining Pedro Alonso.

Released Dec. 2023 via Netflix, “Berlin’s” debut was the most-watched series globally upon its premiere, reaching the Top...

The 10 Most Unsettling Movies You’ll Ever See
Image
Filmmaking is a form of self-expression: “The most personal is the most creative”. Remember that? Well, that’s quite true most of the time. This generation of filmmakers, such as Gasper Noe, Lars von Trier, and Michael Haneke, do not hesitate to leave their imprint and personal style on their film, irrespective of how that makes the audience feel. They’ve developed a warning system to offset any unwilling takers and keep their films limited to ‘their’ audience. Beyond these names, there are many films etched in movie history that are similarly eerie in tone. We’ve tried to make a list of such unsettling movies (while deliberately missing out on a few). Let us know in the comments the ones you feel should’ve made the cut.

Honorable Mention: The Skin I Live In (2011)

A Pedro Almodovar film can never feel empty. Even if the performances don’t live up to your expectations,...

Pedro Almodovar's Devastating Body Horror Movie Is Unlike Any Other Film in the Genre
Image
An auteur to the highest degree, Pedro Almodóvar's artistic stamp is as unmistakable as any living filmmaker. His vibrant color palette, melodramatic flair, and off-kilter black humor are instantly recognizable. While every film of his is distinct, he rarely makes the same film twice. Almodóvar's latest film, The Room Next Door, is the Spanish director's first English-language film, proving that he is not bound to any theme, genre, or language. Audacious artistic swings are nothing out of the ordinary for the All About My Mother and Pain and Glory director, whose 2011 body horror melodrama/thriller, The Skin I Live In, starring the director's on-screen avatar, Antonio Banderas, underlined Almodóvar's uncanny ability to converge macabre psychological exercises with deep-seated humanity.

From Provocateur to Elder Statesman: Pedro Almodóvar’s U.S. Box Office History
Image
Pedro Almodóvar is nobody’s idea of a conventional, throwback director in most ways. But among top international directors over the last 40 years, he stands if not alone but at least above anyone else until now in gaining prominence in the U.S. with subtitled films — without ever making an English-language one.

Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Akira Kurosawa, François Truffaut, all of whom saw consistent success in U.S. arthouses, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, made either just one or no films outside their native languages. From the 1980s, it became common for the most successful European and Latin American directors to pursue projects in English, sometimes never returning to their native tongues. Many others, like Bong Joon Ho, Alfonso Cuarón, and Guillermo del Toro, have leapfrogged to English-language scripts and actors after their initial successes.

Not Almodóvar, until now. With “The Room Next Door” (Sony Pictures Classics), he...

Marisa Paredes at an event for Los Goya 25 años (2011)
Marisa Paredes, the admired Spanish actress who collaborated with Pedro Almodóvar in such films as The Flower of My Secret, All About My Mother and The Skin I Live In, has died. She was 78.

Her death was announced Tuesday by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain, which called her one of the country’s “most iconic actors … her body of work was defined by women who were strong, ambivalent, broken, passionate, enigmatic, but who were, above all, very human.”

Almodóvar told Spanish public broadcaster Rtve that “it is as if I woke up from a bad dream … I am struggling to come to terms with Marisa’s death.” In their country, she was known as “an Almodóvar girl.”

Paredes also portrayed Roberto Benigni’s socialite mother-in-law in Life Is Beautiful (1997) and the head of the orphanage in Guillermo del Toro’s horror film The Devil’s Backbone (2001), set during the Spanish Civil War.

‘A Different Man’: Read The Screenplay For Aaron Schimberg’s Gotham Awards Best Picture Winner
Image
Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with A Different Man, A24’s dark comedy from writer and director Aaron Schimberg. The film, which won Best Picture at the Gotham Awards earlier this month, stars Sebastian Stan as Edward, an aspiring actor who undergoes a radical new experimental medical procedure to transform his appearance drastically.

The procedure is a success, and Edward changes his persona and name to Guy, a photogenic rising star who seems to have it made in the shade.

Edwards’s former neighbor, Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), finds inspiration in his life to create an Off Broadway play. Edward auditions for the role of a lifetime, a role he believes he is the only person on earth who could possibly understand. Edward is then eclipsed by Oswald (Adam Pearson), a character who propels the story into more complex and layered territory...

Marisa Paredes, Pedro Almodóvar Star, Dies at 78
Image
Marisa Paredes, a grand dame of Spanish cinema, died on Tuesday in Madrid from heart failure. She was 78.

While she acted in 75 movies, she will be best remembered for the five films she starred in directed by Pedro Almodóvar: “Dark Habits” (1983), “High Heels” (1991), “The Flower of My Secret” (1995), “All About My Mother” (1999) and “The Skin I Live In” (2011). Of all these, she thought she turned in one of her career-best performances in “The Flower of My Secret,” which marks the beginning of Almodóvar’s return to his roots and world of his mother, a re-connection which continues to this day.

In “The Flower of My Secret,” Paredes played a chic romantic novelist seemingly at first a fish out of water in the village where she was born.

In real life, Paredes had a natural elegance, compounded by her favouring dresses by Spain-based designer Sybille which J.A. Bayona noted, reacting to her death,...

Marisa Paredes at an event for Los Goya 25 años (2011)
Marisa Paredes, a well-known personality in Spanish cinema and close colleague of famed director Pedro Almodóvar, has died at the age of 78. The Spanish Film Academy reported her death, writing, “Spanish cinema is losing one of its most iconic actresses.”

Paredes’ career lasted nearly six decades, including over 75 films and a similar number of television shows. She is largely recognized as one of the most accomplished actresses of her time. Her work with Almodóvar includes remarkable performances in films like High Heels (1991), The Flower of My Secret (1995), All About My Mother (1999), and The Skin I Live In (2011).

Her journey to popularity was fueled by personal dedication. In an emotional interview with Spain’s Tve in June, Paredes discussed her poor beginnings as “the daughter of a doorkeeper.” At 15, she went on a hunger strike to encourage her father to support her acting career.

Pedro Almodovar movies: All 22 films ranked worst to best
Image
Oscar-winning Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar has made a name for himself with a series of brightly colored, delightfully kinky and unabashedly melodramatic titles, mixing comedy, drama, sex and violence to great success. He shows no signs of slowing down, with his latest outing in 2019 being the Oscar-nominated “Pain and Glory.” Let’s take a look back at all 22 of his films, ranked worst to best.

Born in 1949 in Spain, Almodovar came to prominence during La Movida Madrilena, a cultural renaissance that blossomed at the end of Francoist Spain. Staring with his filmmaking debut “Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls Like Mom” (1980), the openly gay director showed an affinity for oddballs and outsiders, populating his films with transvestites, transexuals and homosexuals, all of whom had previously been relegated to the closet. He also showed a talent for working with women, and throughout his 40 year career has placed actresses such as Penelope Cruz,...

This film, which was Almodóvar’s homage to Brokeback Mountain, seemed set to make waves. However, it missed out on an Oscar nod, and critics pointed to its pacing as a likely reason for the snub. Despite the buzz and anticipation, it appears that Strange Way of Life didn’t quite hit the mark with the Academy. Here is why!

Venice Review: Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door Faces Death with a Light, Succinct Touch
Image
In life and in cinema, Pedro Almodóvar likes to talk about death. When people aren’t losing their faculties in his films––like going blind (Folle… folle… fólleme Tim!), falling into comas (Talk to Her), or falling apart altogether (The Skin I Live In)––they dwell on the afterlife or are already there (Volver), though never is it a cause for undue solemnity. Speaking in a New Yorker profile in 2016, the director recalled watching the local woman in his hometown of Calzada chatting as they tended to their families’ graves. “Death disappeared,” Almodóvar explained, “because the important thing was the flowers, the conversations.”

That sentiment is alive and well in the director’s latest death film. His first-ever English-language feature, adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through mostly in structure only, The Room Next Door stars Tilda Swinton as the terminally ill named Martha who decides...

Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door Set for Centerpiece of 62nd New York Film Festival
Image
After just wrapping production a few months ago, Pedro Almodóvar is already putting the finishing touches on his next feature. Following Venice Film Festival’s announcement of a world premiere for The Room Next Door, starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, it’s now been unveiled as the Centerpiece selection for the 62nd New York Film Festival, making its U.S. premiere at Alice Tully Hall on October 4.

Here’s the synopsis: “Ingrid (Julianne Moore), a best-selling writer, rekindles her relationship with her friend Martha (Tilda Swinton), a war journalist with whom she has lost touch for a number of years. The two women immerse themselves in their pasts, sharing memories, anecdotes, art, movies—yet Martha has a request that will test their newly strengthened bond. Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘The Room Next Door’ Heads for New York Film Festival as Centerpiece Selection
Image
First Madrid, then New York, then Venice, and now: the New York Film Festival.

Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door,” which shot earlier this year on-location in Madrid and Manhattan, will play the New York Film Festival (NYFF) as its Centerpiece on October 4. NYFF has billed the melodrama, starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, as a U.S. premiere, which means New York is the next destination for Almodóvar’s first English-language feature after world-premiering in the Venice competition. That also means no Telluride screening, but it could still show up in Toronto for a North American premiere. The NYFF presentation of “The Room Next Door” will take place at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.

Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door, starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, will receive its U.S. premiere as the centerpiece selection for the 2024 New York Film Festival on Oct. 4.

The film, an adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through, marks Spanish auteur Almodóvar’s first English-language feature and follows best-selling writer Ingrid (Moore) and Martha (Swinton) as they rekindle their friendship after losing touch. As they immerse themselves in past memories, anecdotes, art and movies, Martha makes a request that will test their renewed bond.

“I am delighted that The Room Next Door will be the centerpiece of the New York Film Festival,” said Almodóvar. “This festival has been my bridge to New York audiences for decades, so it only felt natural that the two protagonists go see a film at the Alice Tully Hall in one of the scenes of the movie. It...

Albert Lewin
Box Play

We’ve spent February discussing Albert Lewin’s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray (listen), the perfectly serviceable remake of Friday the 13th (listen), and Pedro Almodóvar’s controversial 2011 thriller The Skin I Live In (listen). Now we’re wrapping up the month with Neil Jordan’s wacky May/December stalker film, Greta (2018).

In the film, Chloë Grace Moretz plays Frances, a new to New York girl who befriends an older woman, Greta (Isabelle Huppert) after returning her lost purse. While the pair strike up an unlikely friendship, Frances’ roommate Erica (Maika Monroe) finds the relationship unusual.

What Frances doesn’t know is that Greta is more than a sad, lonely old woman. She’s got secrets in a trunk, a syringe full of sedatives, and a penchant for burying her secrets, including private investigator Stephen Rea, in the basement.

Will Frances wind up like all of Greta’s other girls?...

I Am (2010)
Navigating the Controversial Gender Politics of Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘The Skin I Live In’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
I Am (2010)
I am Vicente.

After kicking off February with discussions of Albert Lewin’s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray (listen) and the perfectly serviceable remake of Friday the 13th (listen), we’re delving into the twisted mind of Pedro Almodóvar with his 2011 thriller The Skin I Live In.

In The Skin I Live In, skilled plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) has tried to develop a new super skin ever since his beloved wife was horribly burned in a car accident 12 years prior. Finally, Ledgard has created a skin that guards the body, but is still sensitive to touch. With the aid of his faithful housekeeper Marilia (Marisa Paredes), Ledgard tests his creation on Vera (Elena Anaya), a woman he keeps prisoner against her will in the basement of his Spanish mansion.

Being an Almodóvar film, there’s much more to this twisted plot than meets they eye.

Julianne Moore to Star in Pedro Almodóvar’s First English-Language Feature ‘The Room Next Door’
Image
Julianne Moore is set to star in “The Room Next Door,” the first full-length English-language feature from Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar.

Moore — whose casting was confirmed by Variety after being posted by Almodóvar’s production company El Deseo on social media — joins Tilda Swinton in the film. Swinton previously starred in Almodovar’s 2021 short “The Human Voice.”

The Instagram post said that the “The Room Next Door” is a “drama between a mother and daughter,” adding that it would be filmed in the spring in New York and Madrid. No other details about the plot or Moore and Swinton’s roles was revealed.

Representatives for Moore did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

Almodóvar had previously stated that his shorts “The Human Voice” and “Strange Way of Life” — which are both in English — were merely warm-ups so he could grow accustomed to directing English-speaking actors. He had...

25 Scariest Movies Of All-Time
Image
The advent of the horror genre was at a time when cinema was in its infancy, around the end of the 19th century, but some horror movies have withstood the test of time to be the scariest of all. With myriad popular, contemporary Gothic literature to draw its inspiration from – alongside a growing interest in the supernatural – horror was pioneered throughout the silent era by European filmmakers like Robert Wiene, F.W. Murnau, and Rupert Julian. The genre was revolutionized in the 1960s by Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960), which popularized psychological horror, while at the same time, low-budget indie horror flicks were on the rise, spearheaded by George A. Romero with his zombie film Night of the Living Dead (1968).

What was left of the 20th century saw a surge in popularity for the genre and increased Americanization. Slasher films with memorable villains became forever a part of popular culture, with new...

Jack Thorne, Ron Leshem, Pedro Almodovar Feature in Talent-Studded Series Mania Main Competition

With an International Panorama spangled by gems – think Spain’s “Apagón,” Sweden’s “Blackwater,” and Canada’s “Disobey” and “Little Bird” – Series Mania also weighs in this year with one, if not the, strongest and most mouthwatering of international competitions in its history.

Including the opening and closing series, Amazon’s “Greek Salad” and Netflix’s “Transatlantic,” nearly all the global streamers have titles in the lineup, from Apple TV+’s “Drops of God” and Paramount+’s “Fleeting Lies.” The lineup also features some A-List international writing talents, such as the U.K.’s Jack Thorne and Israel’s Ron Leshem and Amit Cohen, whose “The Virtues” and “No Man’s Land” rank among the most memorable of recent Series Mania competition titles, and closing the festival, out of competition, “Unorthodox’s” Anna Wenger.”Fleeting Lies” also represents one of the first series from Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar’s El Deseo label in Madrid,...

Keanu Reeves in John Wick (2014)
‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ Review: Keanu Reeves’ Action Nonsense Is Back and Better Than Ever
Keanu Reeves in John Wick (2014)
The delight of the John Wick franchise lies squarely in its weirdness. The film series famously kicked off with mercenary protagonist and certified wife guy John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, avenging his dog. But as John’s thirst for vengeance dwindled, the screenwriters decided to surround him with bloodthirsty weirdos rather than kill more of his loved ones. Even better, the films are aware of their own strangeness, lending a campy joy to even the dourest deeds.

The franchise is at its bizarre best in “John Wick 4,” written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch and directed, as always, by former stuntman Chad Stahelski. The wild world of assassins is more esoteric, the cinematography and choreography more stunning. Though the film stretches to an audacious 169 minutes — just under three hours — if you surrender yourself to the gorgeous silliness of the Wickiverse, it goes by in a fist-flying flash.

“John Wick 4...

Antonio Banderas Congratulates Morocco, Speaks About How ‘The Mask of Zorro’ Paved the Way for Spaniards in Hollywood
Image
“In a way, that match represented the personalities of what is going on in our country right now,” said Oscar-nominated actor Antonio Banderas when speaking about the Spanish being eliminated from the World Cup by the neighboring country of Morocco. “The Spanish didn’t know what to do. They were just passing horizontally, but the goal is there! So congratulations to Morocco. What the hell! I was surprised the defeat didn’t hurt me that much. On other days, I would’ve spent three days depressed!”

Banderas’ heartfelt congratulations to the Moroccan soccer team were received with great enthusiasm by the audience at his In Conversation event at the Red Sea Film Festival, where his latest, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” is playing as part of Red Sea: Families and Children strand.

The actor went on to say his ties to Morocco come from his childhood years living in Marbella.

Here’s What’s New on Hulu in October 2022
David Bruckner
Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.

In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.

In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.

Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

Hulu New Releases: October 2022
Justin Roiland
When the name of your streaming service so neatly fits into the word “Halloween,” you have a moral imperative to bring the goods come spooky season. Thankfully Hulu is abiding by that obligation with its list of new releases for October 2022.

Halloween…or rather Huluween is set to be a big deal for the streamer. This month sees a bevy of horror offerings. On the TV side of things, the series adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser premieres on Oct. 7. That will be accompanied by two animated specials from Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland. The first is A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special on Oct. 3, which is followed by The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! on Oct. 17.

Hulu’s original movies are decidedly spooky-centric this month as well. The horror meme movie Grimcutty premieres on Oct. 10 and will be followed by Matriarch on Oct. 21. Of course, many of the library...

The Skin I Live In and In a Glass Cage Elevate the Captivity Drama
Image
Pedro Almodover’s 2011 foray into the horror genre, The Skin I Live In, shares a number of thematic parallels with Agusti Villaronga’s controversial 1986 captivity drama In a Glass Cage. The Skin I Live In is a bizarre revenge-fueled science-gone-awry gem that echoes the visuals of Eyes Without a Face and, unlike the director's previous credits, has a sterile color palette, less emotional melodrama, and horror leanings. The infamous In a Glass Cage is a provocative meditation on the cycle of violence, sexual torture, Stockholm Syndrome, and the futility of revenge.
