Once upon a time, the sassiest diner in Brooklyn was home to two broke besties who literally proved that dreams don’t need deep pockets, just a lot of grit and a whole lot more humor. Yes, we’re talking about 2 Broke Girls, which wasn’t just a sitcom, it was a cultural feast of awkward moments, unapologetic one-liners, and a friendship so iconic that we all secretly wanted to join their chaotic cupcake hustle.
With Max’s sarcastic charm and Caroline’s glamorous optimism, the show served up more laughs than their cupcakes did for customers. Whether it was Earl’s timeless wit, Sophie’s outrageous outfits, or Han’s endless quest for respect, the cast truly became our offbeat, dysfunctional family.

But even after the diner closed its TV doors in 2017, these stars weren’t about to hang up their aprons.

There's no denying that Selina Meyer is among television's best worst characters of all time. You're rooting for her, but she's kind of awful... but then she's funny and somewhat well-meaning... but then she does something unforgivable. It's all within the ethos of Veep, one of TV's greatest comedies.
As a self-centered and power hungry (whether she would admit it or not) politician, Selina's savage in her quest to become the first woman elected President of the United States. Each season of HBO's Emmy Award-winning comedy series starring the brilliant Julia Louis-Dreyfus charts Selina's ups, downs, and inevitable even worse downs as she does whatever it takes to achieve her goals.
Following its run on HBO between 2012 and 2019, fans continue to rewatch Veep over and over. No one could have known how true to life some of its more outlandishly hilarious plots would become. But after watching Veep for the hundredth time,...

NBC and Peacock's new sitcom St. Denis Medical is a mockumentary workplace comedy set in an underfunded Oregon hospital and is sure to cure your woes, at least according to critics. It avoids the tropes of other medical shows that tend to focus on flashy doctors and major crises, instead primarily focusing on nurses — the unsung heroes that keep the hospital running.
A perfectly cast Allison Tolman (Fargo) stars as a workaholic supervising nurse and mom who keeps the ER running; Wendi McLendon-Covey (a familiar face to fans of The Goldbergs and Reno 911!) plays the administrative bigwig who's focused more on accolades than patient care; and David Alan Grier takes on the role of a curmudgeonly doctor. Kahyun Kim, Josh Lawson, Kaliko Kauahi, and Mekki Leeper fill out the rest of the archetypes, including a nurse with a wild streak, a self-idolizing surgeon, and a Montana transplant with a strict...

If anyone knows the potency of good sitcom chemistry, it’s probably Eric Ledgin.
The writer and producer who co-created NBC’s “St. Denis Medical” has been involved with “Superstore,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Rutherford Falls,” and recently “American Auto” — and he knows how to get an audience on his side. Sometimes it only takes a pilot, but sometimes it takes several episodes or a full season to invest in a new workplace comedy, like the hospital mockumentary which premiered in November.
The core cast includes a “Superstore” mainstay (Kaliko Kauahi), familiar TV faces, comedy legends (David Alan Greer and Wendi McLendon Covey), and a fresh face from the film world (Kahyun Kim). Viewers get to know them little-by-little, but the actors gel enough to be a driving narrative force — a welcome result for a casting process that Ledgin told IndieWire “almost killed me.” Even with talented performers coming...

St. Denis Medical airs Tuesdays on NBC and follows "an eclectic team of underfunded yet dedicated doctors, nurses and hospital staff, who want nothing more than to turn the hospital into an international medical destination." However, among the enthusiastic bunch are also characters like David Alan Grier's Dr. Ron, a seasoned surgeon who's seen it all and is over it all. In addition to Grier, the main cast includes Allison Tolman, Kaliko Kauahi, Josh Lawson, Mekki Leeper, Kahyun Kim, and Wendi McLendon-Covey.
Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer co-created the sitcom after working together on series such as Superstore and America Auto. St. Denis Medical serves as Ledgin's showrunning debut, and he was inspired to draw from some of his own experiences. Superstore's Ben Feldman speaks to whether he would ever appear on St. Denis Medical. Feldman is known for playing Jonah, a lead character in the hit NBC workplace comedy Superstore. Following the lives of the workers at a fictionalized version of Wal-Mart, called Cloud Nine, Superstore ran on the platform from 2015 to 2021. St. Denis Medical is another NBC workplace comedy, but this time set in an underfunded hospital. Since its premiere in November, St. Denis Medical has been extremely popular, setting records for Peacock.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for The Mayfair Witches season 2, Feldman addresses the possibility of him appearing on St. Denis Medical. While Feldman said there are no plans "right now" to include him on St. Denis Medical, he would be open to appearing on the show. Superstore, which has been off the air for more than three years, is sorely missed, but the good news is that NBC released the show's best replacement series in the fall of 2024. The original sitcom premiered in November 2015 and was beloved by many, as proven by its impressive run on NBC and 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. Superstore ultimately produced six seasons and 113 episodes before it came to an end in March 2021. While it would be difficult for any TV show to follow in Superstore's footsteps, one 2024 workplace comedy has the chops to do so.
A few months before the Superstore series finale, a spinoff, Bo & Cheyenne, was said to be in the early stages of development at NBC. As the title suggests, it would have featured Johnny Pemberton and Nichole Sakura reprising their Superstore roles as Bo and Cheyenne, respectively. However, NBC later decided not to go forward with the spinoff.

They say laughter is the best medicine, so it’s a good thing the NBC comedy machine is back up and running this week, ready to cure those Americans currently suffering from a general sense of unease. Set at an understaffed hospital in Oregon, “St. Denis Medical” is a mockumentary seemingly constructed from the well-preserved remains of some of TV’s best and brightest workplace comedies, from “Parks and Recreation” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” to “The Office” and “Abbott Elementary.”
Created by Justin Spitzer (“Superstore”) and Eric Ledgin (“American Auto”), the series — the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Peacock — features a talented cast that includes Allison Tolman, Wendi McLendon-Covey, David Alan Grier, and Josh Lawson. By filtering its comedy through an issue affecting millions of Americans — the country’s broken healthcare system — “St. Denis Medical” is both topical and funny, making it the awards contender to watch this weekend.

The new NBC sitcom St. Denis Medical finds laughs in an unconventional place. Most people wouldn't think of visiting the hospital as a funny occasion, but executive producers Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin -- who worked together on Spitzer's previous NBC comedies, the underrated Superstore and American Auto -- are taking a different approach. They're leaning into the absurdity of the modern American health care system to entertain audiences.
In an interview with Cbr, Spitzer and Ledgin discussed making the predicaments at the titular hospital funny, while also ensuring they're not joking about anything too serious. They also reflected on the popularity of workplace comedies as a whole. And how much does it mean to them to be back in business with NBC?

“The Office,” “Parks and Recreation,” “Abbott Elementary” and now “St. Denis Medical,” the latest in a line of television workplace mockumentary comedies. Mentioning these previous titles shouldn’t be a knock against “St. Denis,” as it feels like it was designed to purposefully coast on these titles’ previously established rhythms, ensembles, dynamics and storylines. It’s a gentle, familiar-feeling show, and while it really works when it finds spiky, surprising and even uncomfortable ruffles to the formula, it plays pretty well when it’s just pulling it off too.
To describe the show’s world is as simple as saying “‘Modern Family’ but the family is doctors,” or “‘Scrubs’ but they’re aware of the camera.” The Emmy-nominated Allison Tolman (“Fargo”) leads an ensemble of medical professionals as our Leslie Knope-esque overachieving supervising nurse Alex.

Since ABC’s hit series “Scrubs” wrapped its nine-season run in 2010, Hollywood has mostly shied away from comedies set in hospitals — at times a tough place to find laughs — though there have been outliers like Fox and Hulu’s “The Mindy Project,” Warner Bros. and Adult Swim’s absurdist “Childrens Hospital” and HBO’s critically acclaimed “Getting On.”
NBC is the latest to attempt it with “St. Denis Medical,” a new sitcom that blends this challenging setting with a popular format: mockumentary. Can Hollywood find comedy inside a hospital in 2024, especially from a show that focuses on hospital workers’ everyday lives and following a global pandemic?
To try to find out, TheWrap did an exclusive set visit in the last week of filming for the show’s 18-episode first season, which is set to premiere on Nov. 12. TheWrap spoke with the “St. Denis Medical” cast and creators about crafting the comedy series.

Harriet Dyer has been cast in the CBS comedy pilot “Dmv,” Variety has learned.
Dyer joins previously announced cast member Tim Meadows in the single-cam pilot, which was ordered at CBS back in August. The pilot is based on a short story by Katherine Heiny. The official logline states that the show is “set at the place everyone dreads going most: the Dmv. Our quirky and lovable characters are making minimum wage, doing a thankless job where customers are annoyed before they even walk in the door. Good thing they have each other.”
Dyer will play Colette, who is described as “the driving examiner with a huge heart. Colette takes the scared and nervous people because she’s calming and patient and genuinely roots for them to pass. Smart, self-aware, and working on herself, Colette is adorably neurotic, bad with boundaries, and often prioritizes other peoples’ feelings over her own.

Colin From Accounts co-creator and star Harriet Dyer has been tapped as a lead opposite Tim Meadows in CBS‘ single-camera comedy pilot Dmv, from Dana Klein, Kapital Entertainment, TrillTV and CBS Studios. Dyer’s casting would not interfere with her duties on the well-received Paramount+ comedy series Colin From Accounts, also produced by CBS Studios; the dates have been worked out so she will be able to do both should Dmv go to series and Colin From Accounts gets renewed for a third season.

Romantic comedies are an endangered species these days. They’re practically extinct from movie theaters, and most TV rom-coms are either not all that funny or weighed down by metric tons of plot convolutions. But I have good news: Paramount+’s Australian charmer Colin From Accounts, returning for Season 2 this Thursday — I’ve seen all eight Season 2 episodes — is a shining example of romantic comedy at its very best, with lots of genuine laughs, pleasurably low stakes and winning performances from stars/co-creators Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer.

Thankfully, the wonderful Loot has found itself in Season 2. The hilarious Maya Rudolph-led comedy series feels more lived-in this season and manages to dole out the laughs and charm in equal measure. If we had our way, Apple TV+ would renew the hit show for another two seasons. (More on that later.)
Season 2 picks up one year after Molly Wells (Rudolph) settles her tabloid-laced divorce from tech billionaire John Novak (Adam Scott). These days, Molly is loving her role as the head of the Wells Foundation, her philanthropic organization. Now focused on charity work, Molly also swears off men. (But how… with guest star Benjamin Bratt as a potential love interest?) Romance blooms elsewhere with Sofia (Michaela Jaé Rodriguez), and nearly every other main character is given an engaging story arc this season.

In the aftermath of Must-See TV, there was a stretch of time when it seemed like NBC was doing comedy outreach for TV critics, constantly renewing shows like Parks and Recreation and The Good Place and Superstore not because they had huge audiences, but because the audiences they possessed were fervent and vocal.
With the initial success of the Night Court reboot and the cancelation of the ostensibly edgier or more niche — some, like me, might say “better,” but to each their own — American Auto and Grand Crew, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for NBC to think that the way forward is broader and more traditional comedies.
If NBC’s new Extended Family is an example of that way forward, there are, at least, worse fates. This is a multi-camera family sitcom of the most traditional type, with a premise so thin it’s barely a premise at all. In...

CBS is reportedly nearing the selection of a new host to take over the time slot previously occupied by James Corden’s Late Late Show. In line with their earlier announcement, CBS has opted not to continue the same show with a different host but to introduce a revamped edition of the popular Comedy Central game show, @midnight. As reported by Puck News, CBS’s CEO, George Cheeks, is presently in the process of evaluating three potential hosts: X Mayo, a former Daily Show writer and American Auto actress; Ricky Velez, a stand-up comedian, and Taylor Tomlinson, a comedian, and writer. The exact nature of CBS’s rebooted version remains uncertain, but it’s worth recalling how Comedy Central ran the show from 2013 to 2017. In each episode, a panel of comedians engaged in witty banter about internet culture and the day’s headlines. The contestant in third place was eliminated before the final round,...

What’s NBC nowadays?
Even before the ongoing writers strike scrambled the network’s fall schedule, its identity — historically quite strong as a place for chewy, grown-up dramas and chic, cerebral sitcoms — had seemed hazy. Promising comedies, the sort that might have grown to fulfill the role recently played by “30 Rock” or “Superstore,” got unceremoniously booted from the air after barely a chance to thrive; new dramas, from “Ordinary Joe” to “The Thing About Pam,” seemed painfully undistinguished.
It’s been a tough few years. And as much as the departure of Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, a career TV executive previously known for her work at Warner Bros. Television, is just latest bit of media industry consolidation, it’s also a moment to observe that the legacy network and its corporate siblings have struggled to find a way forward. In the years...

The creator of American Auto reveals what would've happened if the show had been renewed for season 3. American Auto fans are going to miss out on a world of Payne, creator Justin Spitzer posted today.
Spitzer posted today on Twitter that the third season “was going to show Katherine Hastings and Payne Motors finally finding success and taking the world by storm. I’m so sorry we didn’t get to make those episodes, but I’m immensely proud of the 23 episodes of the show we did put out there.”
NBC opted not to proceed with a third season of its workplace comedy series American Auto, created and executive produced by Superstore creator Spitzer. His other workplace comedy, St. Denis Medical, has been picked up to series by the network.
Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo also starred in the series. The series was produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with Spitzer Holding Company and Kapital Entertainment.

NBC recently axed the sitcom American Auto after two seasons, confirming that no third season is in development. The news was a bit of a surprise, as ratings were only slightly down compared to the first season, and the series has garnered that rare, coveted score of 100% on the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes. But the powers that be at NBC are changing some things up with the network's comedy offerings for the 2023-24 season, having recently ordered to series the workplace comedy St. Denis Medical from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer - who also created American Auto. Night Court and Lopez vs Lopez are also both returning for second seasons.
"I really loved this opportunity - everyone on the creative team, the writers, the crew and of course, the ensemble made magic. Lucky me," series star Ana Gasteyer wrote on Twitter in response to the news.
