Superstore, which has been off the air for more than three years, is sorely missed, but the good news is that NBC released the show's best replacement series in the fall of 2024. The original sitcom premiered in November 2015 and was beloved by many, as proven by its impressive run on NBC and 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. Superstore ultimately produced six seasons and 113 episodes before it came to an end in March 2021. While it would be difficult for any TV show to follow in Superstore's footsteps, one 2024 workplace comedy has the chops to do so.

A few months before the Superstore series finale, a spinoff, Bo & Cheyenne, was said to be in the early stages of development at NBC. As the title suggests, it would have featured Johnny Pemberton and Nichole Sakura reprising their Superstore roles as Bo and Cheyenne, respectively. However, NBC later decided not to go forward with the spinoff.

Since ABC’s hit series “Scrubs” wrapped its nine-season run in 2010, Hollywood has mostly shied away from comedies set in hospitals — at times a tough place to find laughs — though there have been outliers like Fox and Hulu’s “The Mindy Project,” Warner Bros. and Adult Swim’s absurdist “Childrens Hospital” and HBO’s critically acclaimed “Getting On.”

NBC is the latest to attempt it with “St. Denis Medical,” a new sitcom that blends this challenging setting with a popular format: mockumentary. Can Hollywood find comedy inside a hospital in 2024, especially from a show that focuses on hospital workers’ everyday lives and following a global pandemic?

To try to find out, TheWrap did an exclusive set visit in the last week of filming for the show’s 18-episode first season, which is set to premiere on Nov. 12. TheWrap spoke with the “St. Denis Medical” cast and creators about crafting the comedy series.

From sitcoms and dramas to limited series and revivals, fall TV is officially back with more new shows than in the past. But who’s creating this content? Here, Variety highlights the showrunners behind some of the new, most highly anticipated series coming in the next few months.

Kevin Abbott

Writer and executive producer of “Happy’s Place,” Abbott has worked with Reba McEntire before, both as a writer on and produce on “Reba.” Previously, Abbott produced 160 episodes of “Last Man Standing” and worked on “My Name Is Earl,” “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place,” “Roseanne” and “The Golden Girls.”

Based on author Katherine Heiny’s short story, Dmv is a single-camera workplace comedy set at the place everyone dreads going most. “Our quirky and lovable characters are making minimum wage, doing a thankless job where customers are annoyed before they even walk in the door,” says the official logline. “Good thing they have each other.”

Harriet Dyer has been cast in the CBS comedy pilot “Dmv,” Variety has learned.

Dyer joins previously announced cast member Tim Meadows in the single-cam pilot, which was ordered at CBS back in August. The pilot is based on a short story by Katherine Heiny. The official logline states that the show is “set at the place everyone dreads going most: the Dmv. Our quirky and lovable characters are making minimum wage, doing a thankless job where customers are annoyed before they even walk in the door. Good thing they have each other.”

Dyer will play Colette, who is described as “the driving examiner with a huge heart. Colette takes the scared and nervous people because she’s calming and patient and genuinely roots for them to pass. Smart, self-aware, and working on herself, Colette is adorably neurotic, bad with boundaries, and often prioritizes other peoples’ feelings over her own.

Colin From Accounts co-creator and star Harriet Dyer has been tapped as a lead opposite Tim Meadows in CBS‘ single-camera comedy pilot Dmv, from Dana Klein, Kapital Entertainment, TrillTV and CBS Studios. Dyer’s casting would not interfere with her duties on the well-received Paramount+ comedy series Colin From Accounts, also produced by CBS Studios; the dates have been worked out so she will be able to do both should Dmv go to series and Colin From Accounts gets renewed for a third season.

Thankfully, the wonderful Loot has found itself in Season 2. The hilarious Maya Rudolph-led comedy series feels more lived-in this season and manages to dole out the laughs and charm in equal measure. In the aftermath of Must-See TV, there was a stretch of time when it seemed like NBC was doing comedy outreach for TV critics, constantly renewing shows like Parks and Recreation and The Good Place and Superstore not because they had huge audiences, but because the audiences they possessed were fervent and vocal.

With the initial success of the Night Court reboot and the cancelation of the ostensibly edgier or more niche — some, like me, might say “better,” but to each their own — American Auto and Grand Crew, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for NBC to think that the way forward is broader and more traditional comedies.

Exclusive: Tye White (American Auto) and Jason O’Mara (The Man in the High Castle) are set for key recurring roles on the upcoming second season of CBS drama series Fire Country.

The drama stars Max Thieriot as Bode Donovan, a young convict seeking redemption and a shortened prison sentence by joining a prison release firefighting program in Northern California, where he and other inmates are partnered with elite firefighters to extinguish massive, unpredictable wildfires across the region. It’s a high-risk, high-reward assignment, and the heat is turned up when Bode is assigned to the program in his rural hometown, where he was once a golden all-American son – until his troubles began. Five years ago, Bode burned down everything in his life, leaving town with a big secret. Now he’s back, with the rap sheet of a criminal and the audacity to believe in a chance for redemption with Cal Fire.

The comedy “Colin From Accounts” tends to surprise viewers who tune in expecting one thing, and realizing it’s something else altogether. It’s a romantic comedy with a most unusual name (read on if you want to find out who “Colin” actually is) and has become a phenomenon first in Australia, then on the BBC in the U.K., followed by the Nordic region and now in the U.S. via Paramount+, where it premiered earlier this month.

CBS is making its latest moves in late-night.

The network has set the showrunners, head writer and exec producing team for After Midnight, its reboot of Comedy Central series @midnight, that will replace The Late Late Show with James Corden.

It comes as the series, which is set to air in the 12:30am slot in early 2024, is narrowing down the field for a host. We hear that Taylor Tomlinson, X Mayo and Ricky Velez are the three in contention and the trio did a test shoot last Wednesday. A decision is expected soon. CBS declined to comment on the host situation.

Jack Martin, who was the showrunner of all four seasons of Comedy Central’s @midnight, which originally ran between 2013 and 2017, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Eric Pierce, who has exec produced series including CBS’ The Challenge: USA and The Wheel.

The sitcom, which stars Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer, and Jon Barinholtz among others, is a workplace sitcom that follows the employees of Detroit's Payne Motors after a clueless new CEO is hired. This month, NBC canceled the series following April's season 2 finale.

The creator of American Auto reveals what would've happened if the show had been renewed for season 3. The series, which centers around the employees of the Detroit-based Payne Motors, focusing on the company’s struggles after getting a clueless new CEO from the pharmaceutical industry, ended its second installment with a relative win. Katherine (Ana Gasteyer) managed to keep her job and allow her team to remain employed. But unfortunately, with NBC canceling American Auto earlier this month, the story ended there.

“American Auto” creator Justin Spitzer shared what fans of the workplace comedy would have seen in Season 3 had NBC renewed the series.

“Season 3 of ‘American Auto’ was going to show Katherine Hastings and Payne Motors finally finding success and taking the world by storm,” Spitzer wrote on Twitter Friday shortly after news circulated that the series would not be returning for a third installment.

The cancellation comes week’s after NBC’s last batch of decisions for on-the-bubble shows, which involved canceling “Grand Crew” after two seasons and “Young Rock” after three seasons.

American Auto fans are going to miss out on a world of Payne, creator Justin Spitzer posted today.

Spitzer posted today on Twitter that the third season “was going to show Katherine Hastings and Payne Motors finally finding success and taking the world by storm. I’m so sorry we didn’t get to make those episodes, but I’m immensely proud of the 23 episodes of the show we did put out there.”

NBC opted not to proceed with a third season of its workplace comedy series American Auto, created and executive produced by Superstore creator Spitzer. His other workplace comedy, St. Denis Medical, has been picked up to series by the network.

Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo also starred in the series. The series was produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with Spitzer Holding Company and Kapital Entertainment.

NBC recently axed the sitcom American Auto after two seasons, confirming that no third season is in development. The news was a bit of a surprise, as ratings were only slightly down compared to the first season, and the series has garnered that rare, coveted score of 100% on the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes. But the powers that be at NBC are changing some things up with the network's comedy offerings for the 2023-24 season, having recently ordered to series the workplace comedy St. Denis Medical from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer - who also created American Auto. Night Court and Lopez vs Lopez are also both returning for second seasons.
