British star Daniel Mays (Line of Duty, Des, Atonement) will play prolific sex attacker John Worboys in a new ITV true crime series.

ITV’s director of drama Polly Hill has commissioned the four-part show, Believe Me, written by the BAFTA-winning Jeff Pope and produced by his production company Etta Pictures (part of ITV Studios).

The series will tell the true story of the three victims of Worboys, dubbed the “black cab rapist” by the British press after he used his profession as a licensed taxi driver to prey on the women of London in a spate of crimes committed between 2006 and 2008.

Aimée-Ffion Edwards (Slow Horses) Miriam Petche (Industry) and Aasiya Shah (Raised by Wolves) will star as the women Worboys sexually assaulted and ultimately made to feel as though they were “just not believed.” Believe Me will cover how Metropolitan Police failings allowed Worboys to remain undetected for years,...

Beyond The Last Kingdom: 6 other Bernard Cornwell books that should be adapted
Image
A historian who loves war stories, Bernard Cornwell has written some of the best, most experted researched historical fiction novels around. It’s no wonder TV producers have been interested in them.

Cornwell's most famous work is the Sharpe series, about a soldier in the Napoleonic Wars. It was adapted into a long-running BBC show that made Sean Bean a star. There’s also The Saxon Stories, which inspired the Netflix show The Last Kingdom, and The Warlord Chronicles, which would become the MGM+ series The Winter King.

All three TV series were great, but Cornwell has written many more books that would be perfect for adaptation. They all boast exciting characters, focus on unique periods in history and have plenty of action to keep readers enthralled. Let's look at some of the top candidates:

Stories set during the Middle Ages have been popular for quite some time, but Game of Thrones and its prequel saga seemingly propelled this type of show to major popularity. We get the appeal of it—there’s nothing like seeing noble knights in shining armor or kings and queens in regal attire.

Since Season 3 of the hit spinoff series is still in production, why not check out these similarly themed shows?

1. Deadwood Ian McShane in Deadwood / Credits: HBO

While Deadwood is set in the 1870s in South Dakota, it shares a lot of dramatic elements with the House of the Dragon.

Jamie Campbell Bower, Eddie Marsan Join 'The Rings of Power'
Image
Jamie Campbell Bower and Eddie Marsan are about to get in the ring...of power, that is. The acclaimed British actors are no strangers to fantasy and genre fare, given the former's time on Stranger Things and the latter's time appearing in, well, seemingly everything else, but neither have played in the acclaimed and beloved universe of author J. R. R. Tolkien — until now.

That's right, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has upped the star power ante in season three, tapping Bower and Marsan to join the cast for the series' next installment. The show is currently in pre-production in England, working out of a new home in Shepperton Studios. According to Prime Video, Bower will be a series regular, while Marsan will appear in a recurring capacity. Further details are currently being kept under lock and key, too precious for this world as it currently...

Image
The Gangs of London will return to battle it out for control of the city's criminal underworld in 2025, and Sky and AMC+ have now released the first teaser for season 3 of the brutally-violent BAFTA-winning series.

The Gareth Evans and Matt Flannery-created crime drama has seen a spike in popularity since the first two seasons have been made available to stream on Netflix, and fans are eager to find out what happened to our main characters following the intense events of the previous batch of episodes.

In the season 2 finale, Sean Wallace and cop-turned-criminal Elliot engaged in a savage battle which culminated with the former close to death and hanging from a crane.

The season 3 teaser confirms that Sean survived (he does that), but now seems to be behind bars. As for Elliot, he appeared to lose any spark of his former self that remained following the death of his father,...

Image
Colin Firth is a father desperately seeking justice in the first trailer for “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth,” an upcoming limited series about the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 that killed 259 passengers and crew members.

In the Sky and Peacock show, Oscar winner Firth plays Dr. Jim Swire, whose daughter dies in the terrorist attack. In the aftermath, he becomes the spokesperson for the families of U.K. victims and embarks on a “relentless journey that not only jeopardizes his stability, family and life, but completely overturns his trust in the justice system,” according to the show’s synopsis. “As the truth shifts under Jim’s feet, his view of the world is left forever changed.”

In addition to Firth, “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth” also stars Catherine McCormack as Jim Swire’s wife, Jane. The five-part series is a co-production between Carnival Films, part of Universal International Studios, and Sky Studios.

I'm Disappointed The Last Kingdom's Perfect Replacement Show Has Been Canceled After Just One Season
Image
I thought The Last Kingdom had found its replacement series sooner than expected, and I was disappointed to hear of its cancellation after just one season. If you're like me and enjoy a historical fiction/fantasy epic, you'll know that good ones are hard to come by, making any morsel of potential worth exploring. After the Seven Kings Must Die ending, there's been a void in my TV enjoyment left by the Netflix series. That was why I was thrilled about MGM+'s The Winter King and why I'm bummed that it won't be returning for season 2.

While not as well-executed as The Last Kingdom, I saw some potential that I thought was worth exploring further. With these big-budget costume shows, I often find that they take some time to grow on me. This was the case with Foundation and The Rings of Power, and in both cases, I'm grateful I stuck around.

The Winter King Season 2: Cancelation & Everything We Know
Image
Quick Links The Winter King Has Been Canceled The Winter King Season 2 Cast The Winter King Season 2 Story The Winter King Season 2: Further News & Info

The Winter King season 2 could have continued the Arthurian fantasy created by Sony Pictures Television and Bad Wolf Studios for MGM+, but it is canceled. The medieval period drama is an adaptation of Bernard Cornwells The Warlord Chronicles which loosely adapts Arthurian legend and ties the mysticism of the myth of Arthur and Camelot with the history of Dark Age Britain. The 2023 TV adaptation stars Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.s Iain De Ceastecker as Arthur Pendragon, and the cast of The Winter King is one of the key reasons anticipation for season 2 was high.

The cast isnt the only reason hopes were high for a second season though, as the story of The Winter King proved to be incredibly suited for the small screen.

Image
The sci-fi thriller Beacon 23 and historical drama The Winter King have both been cancelled at MGM+, though the two shows may still be rescued. The latter followed two characters who have to learn to trust each other after they're seemingly trapped at the end of the known universe.

Both The Winter King and Beacon 23 canceled at MGM+
Image
To understand this story, you have to first know that there is a streaming service called MGM+. I don't think I've ever met a single person who subscribes to MGM+, which may explain why some of its programming is being canceled. TV Line reports that neither The Winter King nor Beacon 23 will be returning for additional seasons.

The Winter King ran for one 10-episodes season last year. I watched it because I'm a big fan of the books it's based on: Bernard Cornwell's The Warlord Chronicles, a novel trilogy about the life of King Arthur filtered through Cornwell's prodigious gift for grounded historical fiction.

By and the large, the series disappointed me. It was a spotty adaptation of Cornwell's books, and I can't imagine it exciting newcomers. I'm sad that the show wasn't better — I would have settled for longer-lived, cause there's some great stuff from the books...

The big winner was Netflix’s “Blue Eye Samurai” with three trophies for Best Individual Achievement in Animation. It’s worth noting that Netflix’s “Arcane” also won three juried awards in advance of winning Best Animated Program in 2022, so this might be good news for “Samurai” in more ways than one.

The Last Kingdom Already Has The Perfect Prequel Series
Image
The Winter King is a great prequel to The Last Kingdom, offering a deeper look into British history and setting the stage for the beloved series. Both shows explore complex themes such as nationhood, spirituality, and loyalty in different ways, providing a rich and engaging viewing experience. Sharing the same author, Bernard Cornwell, both The Last Kingdom and The Winter King capture the essence of his historical fiction and bring the past to life.

After the conclusion of The Last Kingdom with the feature-length Netflix movie Seven Kings Must Die, many fans remain eager to revisit Bernard Cornwell's immersive vision of pre-medieval England, with one television series providing the perfect opportunity. Beginning on the BBC and latterly moving to Netflix, The Last Kingdom proved hugely popular with audiences thanks to its charismatic characters and gripping story. Although the show focused on Alexander Dreymon's Uhtred of Bebbanburg and his story has come to a close,...

How ‘Doctor Who’ Exec Producers Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner Helped Transform South Wales Into a Buzzing Hive of Production
Image
The renaissance of “Doctor Who,” which started its latest season this week, is a 20-year journey that is entwined with the establishment of a thriving TV production scene in South Wales, where it shoots, and the meteoritic rise of the production company Bad Wolf.

This dates back to 2003 when writer Russell T Davies was asked by the BBC’s then head of drama, Jane Tranter, to revive the show and to base the production in South Wales, an area hitherto known for coal mining and heavy industry. It was produced in 2004, overseen by BBC Wales head of drama, Julie Gardner.

When Tranter and Gardner relocated to Los Angeles to lead BBC Worldwide Productions and Adjacent Productions, they produced “Da Vinci’s Demons” for Starz, and again located the production in South Wales.

In 2015, Tranter and Gardner set up Bad Wolf, which takes its name from an episode of “Doctor Who,” and...

‘7 Keys’ Review: Emma McDonald and Billy Postlethwaite Bring Much-Needed Heat to Misguided London Hook-Up Drama
Image
Harking back to those erotic thrillers of yore, especially from the 1980s and 90s, writer-director Joy Wilkinson’s 7 Keys, her debut feature, starts out full of promise and potential — much like the impromptu hook-up that gets the plot rolling. Unfortunately, like many an ill-starred love match, what follows is disappointing as things evolve in a lurid and yet strangely predictable direction. But while it all goes sour and south in the last act, there are definitely sparks of originality in the early running, supported by a brace of strong performances from Emma McDonald and Billy Postlethwaite, who deserve better than what the script gives them to work with.

Premiering in the Visions section at SXSW, this low-budget striver of a feature may find berths with streamers, and ought to at least attract attention from casting directors looking for new talents.

McDonald and Postlethwaite aren’t entirely unknown quantities. The...

New British TV Series from 2023: BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, Netflix, Prime Video, BritBox
Image
In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.

Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.

Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

'The Winter King' Review — Arthurian Legends Are Reborn in Sprawling Series
Image
The last two decades of television have delivered an absolute lion’s share of Arthurian legends brought to life. Each series has had its own unique style, from the quirky humor of Merlin to the sex appeal of Camelot, though none are quite like MGM+’s epic new adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s The Winter King. While the series is rife with pagan mysticism, it is far more focused on being rooted in the realism of its historical context. Though the pagan priestesses and even Merlin (Nathaniel Martello-White) may have intuitive foresight, they are not all-powerful beings capable of otherworldly magic. Set in the period of late antiquity in Great Britain, following the Roman occupation and amid the conflict with the Saxons, The Winter King is a sprawling tale about a warrior’s rise to power during uncertain times. In this, Arthur (Iain De Caestecker) is not the rightful heir to the throne,...
